Our journey takes us to Chicago, where we meet a Pokemon trainer who creates fake Pokemon through digital art. We have all imagined fake Pokemon, such as regular Pokemon, or even different forms and Mega Evolutions. For example, you may imagine a Mega Flygon, a normal type Eeveelution, or maybe you're like me and imagine a new Whale Pokemon. My guest brings his ideas for fake Pokemon to life, such as a root beer Pokemon that is a bear, or an armadillo made out of armor. His imagination stems from his deep love for Pokemon from the anime, the main series games, and even Pokemon Go. Here is his origin story into the world of Pokemon. This is Lokemon! Today, I'm joined by an artist who loves to create fake Pokemon. Lokomon, welcome to the show.

Hi, thank you for having me.

Without a doubt, and unfortunately, you know, I'm not a video podcast. But I love how much, you kind of dived into your character a little bit, because you had the three hats going, the pink and blue getup. Is that kind of like a character you made yourself?

Lokemon 1:48

so what happened was it originally, for actually a party. my sister had a birthday party and she wanted an Alice in Wonderland thing. Well, I tend to take a lot of things into my own hands. I thought, what if I went pastel instead? Eventually the, this particular getup grew into its own character persona, mixing some of my loves of magical girl precursors in particular in Pokemon. So whenever somebody asks me to do an event, I particularly. outfit is like my go to outfit for said event.

David Hernandez 2:15

And I believe it looks similar to the character you have on your banner on Twitter, right? Is that kind of the same thing?

Lokemon 2:20

exactly. Precisely that.

David Hernandez 2:22

So would you kind of wear that get up if you were like a gym leader or elite four member just out of curiosity?

Lokemon 2:26

Um, yes. I think that's like my, um, fairy type elite for get up. That was some, something that I'm also, I worked on like recently, I made a, basically a fairy type team using the Scarlet and Violet Pokemon, which incredibly is a hard work when you work with limited stuff, but I'm actually really good at the game, so I'm pretty confident in my abilities, but yeah, I like to think that's like my Pokemon champion, fairy type extraordinaire.

David Hernandez 2:46

Oh, so we'd love to ask a question. I'm going to go ahead and start with this question. I always would like to ask certain guests about what their team would be. So since you say you're going to be like a fairy type champion, what six Pokemon would you choose to be on your team?

Lokemon 2:59

So I modeled my team actually after a distract of Synthia's and in a singles format and standard format, first line up Mimikyu, I have the setup strategy where I have it placed in as a we go together type thing. It's meant to stall, waste time, take out its opponent with it. And where down the team overall. Secondly, Scream Tail, I was very fascinated by its overall tankiness my next bet I am a big fan of the fairy dragon type mega Altaria. I, it is a crime that they, we've had it one time on a temporary basis and it was snatched away from me, but a fairy and dragon type is such an iconic mixture. Definitely something worth keeping around. another Pokemon that I really am fond of or typing, is the Fairy-Steel type. It's a pretty literally solid solid type. No pun intended i'd have to go with Magearna probably because I just like the origin of it. It's really like Personally fits my character overall the pokemon that's meant to help care and heal others if I wasn't running a mega Altaria, I'd also like an Audino, but, for keeping things consistently. Iron Valiant. Iron Valiant is pretty cool. it kind of reminds me of X Train Knight from my life as a teenage robot, but I like the idea of a fairy fighting type. I really do wish we can, like, reach further and start, like, designing Pokemon that are, like, magical girls because they fight, like, Dragon Ball Z characters. They fight, that's what they do. And so, a chance to expand on what a fairy actually is. one more. Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, probably, I'm like Zamazenta, Zamazenta, like, it's just a very impactful Pokemon. Legendary Pokemon, it's a fairy type, honestly, and it's a dog with a sword. What more could you want? Zacian, Zacian, not Zamazenta,

would you use the, uh, what is it called? The hero's form, or would you use the base form?

Lokemon 4:55

Gotta use the hero's form. It's, it's a state, it's a statement piece.

David Hernandez 4:58

Oh yeah, of course. You can't have it without the sword. Although, it's weird looking at it as a naked, uh, without its armor. It's weird.

I'm not going to lie. It does kind of like, I say, who are you?

So, let's break off the fairy chains. What would be six Pokemon just for champion battle, whatever Pokemon, no limits?

Lokemon 5:19

Okay. you're doing that. Let's do, you know, I'm going to, I'm not going to pick fairy types for this. I'm not going to try my heart is not to, which is hard.

David Hernandez 5:26

are you okay? Like, you know, you're saying no to fairy types, that's kinda

Lokemon 5:30

I know it's kind of, I might, maybe I'll do one, but another thing that I'm really big about is, team balancing. as much as I love monotypes kind of make me sick at the same time. Cause it's like I mixing Pokemon together. I'll probably use one fairy type because I didn't mention it before. I'll use one, but it's, the idea is that I strive for harmony, harmony in battles and everything like that. so for starters, a Pokemon that I've been like, really, really, really fond of isn't a fairy type is gold and go, or Google didn't go. I really love the gimmick of the coins, but it's overall ability, making it immune to status moves and it's technical prowess it's a really fun mod. A lot of people, it's a hit or miss for a lot of people. It's just a funky little coin dude, shining and sparkling all time. It's like, how can you not love it? And like, something's like, I like to think of it, it's like, a, a coin mech. And so, it's a little gimme rule inside. And it's just a mech of coins.

David Hernandez 6:28

You know, that's a very interesting way to think about it. I never thought about it. Because it actually is a mech, really. Because it's a gimmick going inside of a golden. My god. It's a mech.

how can you not like that? it's a brilliant concept. Brilliant concept. Excellent ability. Otherworldly. Fantastic. let's see here. Another type of Pokemon that I've been pretty acquainted with for over the years that honestly I go down with, Milotic. I

David Hernandez 6:57

remember, Shiny hunting in a Pokemon Go and waiting like several years to transfer it when the connectivity finally happened. And so it was like, my time has come. The moment is here. And the defensive ability, Marvel scale, beautiful ability, getting more on the attack phase in terms of like suede or legendaries, I always like to add like a suede or legendary within the mix of my teams. And recently I been growing an affinity for, dragapult. Dragapult speed. It's pretty fun. little gimmicky guy. Like, I can fire little dudes at you. What more could you want?

Okay, so i've done defensive Special defensive physical and and speed So think about me is like I have a hard time picking your favorite pokemon because I love All of them like this is legit like my biggest struggle in the world in life But you know, i'm gonna break the fairy rule for this one probably fluttermane. it's such a fantastic mod I named it. enchantix from like the wink show because that's what it kind of gives me But it's just an overall powerhouse Nothing to really complain about it. Um, my next probably gastronom,

Ooh, that's interesting.

I love gastronom with my heart and soul. I love it's sustainability. It's recoverability. It's, actually is supporting me a long time for a couple of my battles as well. I'm a big fan of like recovery moves, especially moves like recover. So when something's around just to stay around for a bit, even the playing field out, it also is a great mod for, supporting teammates as well.

David Hernandez 9:14

do you have a preference on the blue or the pink one?

Lokemon 9:16

Um, my favorite color is pink. So it's always been pink for me.

David Hernandez 9:19

that's fair. I always prefer the pink one as well. Whenever I see the blue one, it just looks kind of odd. I don't know what it is. I just don't care for it too much.

Lokemon 9:25

The thing. Well, like the she shells. I prefer the blue shells over the pink one.

David Hernandez 9:30

Is it because of the ears? Mm

Lokemon 9:32

so. I think so. I just like the white and it just more appealing to me, but also because I played Pokemon Pearl, I didn't get Diamond, so like much later and so was like, I always envy the blues. That's the one I watched. Give it to me. never have it.

David Hernandez 9:48

Wait, did they separate those in those games? I can't

Lokemon 9:49

I I thought they did. because I can never find it.

David Hernandez 9:55

Right. I had Pearl 2 and I always had the pink one as well.

Lokemon 9:58

Yeah, childhood envy. Eventually I got a hold of diamond, but then like I never like play through it. I do. I could probably do it in BDSP, but you know, if we've gone past that point in our life,

David Hernandez 10:09

one more. I'm thinking Probably E electros. I like the idea of basically having no weakness, so it's always just a safe Pokémon to put down, minus the existence of like Mole Breaker. Extremely Fun Pong, when I first saw it, I'm like, oh, it's Electrotype. Oh, it's Levitate. Oh, it's one of my faves. It's one of the besties.

David Hernandez 10:29

to like mix, switch, going to battle without fear, surprise switches and it's great, honestly.

David Hernandez 10:36

Yeah, that was one of the ones I used in Black and White when it first debuted, because that was its debut generation, right? I just like this design. It's a very good one. You would think it's a water type, but it actually looks cool as an electric type, to be honest.

Lokemon 10:47

a, and that's the thing I like about like certain Pokemon, like sun for example. It's that Pokemon that have a habitat that is contrary to their entire typing.

David Hernandez 10:55

Oh, so you prefer that kind of paradox to where it doesn't match up?

Lokemon 10:58

It's fun because it's like. It's like actual animals is the animals sharing ecosystem, Pokemon sharing ecosystem. And of course, they're going to be type advantages, but it's also going to be tight harmonies. And you can find out that which ones are like actual predators of the area, which ones are the more defensive types. The science behind Pokemon is extremely fantastic and I like the way they talk about, habitats and ecosystems of these Pokemon, the science and the biology. I wrote a biology paper in college, actually. It was, um,

David Hernandez 11:26

Pokemon?

Lokemon 11:27

yes, precisely. It the theory of Pokemon's relatively existence and how much of a crossover is in, like, the real world. And so it took Bulbasaur, for example, on an Anima and also a Plantae Pokemon. And so it took Bulbasaur, for example, on an Anima and also a Plantae And took the qualities of how would it have been able to sustain itself with photosynthesis as well as actually using an actual diet of other animals or plant, depending on its diet. And harmonious with its photosynthesis

David Hernandez 11:52

that is so interesting. So it was just strictly about Bulbasaur. Or do you use other Pokemon

Lokemon 11:56

Um, I use the Pokemon as an example, but this is particularly highlighting Bulbasaur mostly because it's like, okay You gotta pick a Pokemon that everybody knows everyone can relate to this one So you gotta start at Gen 1. Gen 1 is a lot of people's origin story and they're all more likely to recognize that before anything else

David Hernandez 12:12

So whenever a Pokemon is introduced, right. And whether it's a generation or a set of games, Do you try to kind of uncover like how that Pokemon fits in that ecosystem of that region, or how far does this kind of detail go with you?

Lokemon 12:24

it varies and depends. first, I like, I take the game at face value. Like, I get to take the game and like, it's like my first game I've ever played. I like the idea of holding a fresh perspective, then after I've experienced the world for a bit, okay. Now, let's revisit, but let's go a little deeper into these things. So in Pokemon are introduced, I like to look at not just their habitats, but the origin of the Pokemon and design existence. So what inspired this Pokemon to be created? And what can I reference it to? Because then that lets me know what else can be connected with it.

David Hernandez 12:55

You have clearly a lot of experience with Pokemon. I was not expecting the whole biology part, which I appreciate you dropping that in, but let's take it back. Let's start to when it first began. So what was your first experience with the franchise?

Lokemon 13:06

Okay. So my first experience with the franchise, and I do remember this little fact, my experience with Pokemon came much later after it was like already released, I think Pokemon came into America in 1998, same year I was born. and so a lot of my exposure to Pokemon was in the Reruns and maybe like a movie. I do remember watching the Pokemon movie three with Entei and the unknown. It was in a little DVD. I also got it with a Sailor Moon movie and it was back to back. It was Sailor Moon Pokemon, Sailor Moon Pokemon, Sailor Moon Pokemon, Sailor Moon Pokemon. Drove my absolutely nuts, absolutely nuts. And I don't think I started American like television shows or cartoons until like maybe somewhere in like the mid 2000s. And then I remember, there was a promotion of cereal that was kind of like Lucky Charms that came out with the Pokemon movie at some point because you know, Pokemon movie was a pretty, pretty, pretty big thing. And so, It was a Pichu in the cover. It was a Purple Lox, a Pichu in the cover, and it had like a different other Pokemon, I wish it was like Marshmallow, but it had a Pichu inside of the, little toy cereal box back when cereal was cool. and that Pichu basically went everywhere with me. That was like my ride or die companion. If I ever had to start with a partner Pokemon, Pichu was definitely the first, you know, Pikachu was like, everyone's like ride or die from the beginning. You started Pikachu. I started with Pichu and actually that's kind of why I have like my Pichu now is now an Alolan From way back, uh, yeah, brought it all the way through, but, that's where it particularly started. And then I do remember this one memory. I remember watching when Pokemon began to re air on cartoon network. And it started from the very first episode. I remember watching it the same day. My little sister was born. My parents were gone to the hospital. I was with my grandmother and I remember watching the first episode. I think it was that moment, but I'm like, you know, when you are a child and then your consciousness developed. That was my moment. That was my roman empire. That was the moment I Developed a brain cell pokemon made that happen and in the between parts of like watching the show my consciousness I did like have a game what color I still have it and then somewhere along the lines It might have been stolen, but I obtained pokemon yellow did not know what the heck I was doing couldn't even read but I was just happy to be I won't say it's my first game because I couldn't even get through with it like mentally I I didn't like re Throw myself back into the ring with the games up until, Pokemon diamond and pearl when it was like first introduced. And it was like, okay, I understand things now a little better in life and I'm able to process what's actually happening with me. And so now when I try to play the old game, it gets kind of iffy because it's like, wait, why, why is it like this? I'm so I've been spoiled, I will say, but Pokemon definitely started around that time. I didn't, have a lot of friends because, first child Problems with my parents and so like our world was kind of small and so my community itself was like small I didn't like have people I talked to I was always changing schools. It was a really turbulent point in my life so the only thing that was actually was consistent in my life was Pokemon and so it's become a Foundation for me and how I live my life.

David Hernandez 16:17

It sounds like Pokemon was kind of that safe haven for you while your whole life was kind of up in arms. It was a good escape but it sounded like Pokemon were almost kind of like the only friends you really had. was consistency.

Lokemon 16:26

Yeah, it was my world like my mom was busy in school and she was also working like dead shifts My dad was always out of the house. I see him late at night The only thing that was really consistent was Pokemon my world has been shaped around So I can never imagine my world without Pokemon because it's always been my world.

David Hernandez 16:44

That's how it was for me too.'cause my mom and dad were always working too. So, you know, they had their own business, you know, and so I spent a lot of time alone and I always remember that I would try to, you remember the, you watched the anime too, right? Do you remember the scene to where, I think Ash and his Pokemon got trapped in some kind of blizzard and they had to take a refuge in a blizz, in a igloo.

I do remember Pikachu refusing to go into the Pokeball.

David Hernandez 17:04

Yeah, and you know, they all circled around Ash. So, growing up, I'd always reenact that scene with my stuffed animals. Because I that kind of, I know it's kind of cheesy to think about, but I always just found very good

Lokemon 17:16

think it's, it's it's a comfort thing. I, I, I do not diminish anybody's, relation when it comes to Pokemon, especially with like that source of comfort, like heck right now, my bed right now, it's literally a kingdom of plushies. I didn't get a lot of plushies as a kid, so we're reclaiming my time and obtaining a lot. I have so many. It's practically an army in here.

David Hernandez 17:36

Which Pokemon do you try to collect plushies of do you have like certain favorites? Are you trying to get one of each Pokemon?

Lokemon 17:40

so I go to like small shops here and there so I'm not overdoing it. And so if I see a new one that the shop's never had before, it's immediately mine. Hands down. No question asked. Now, there is particular that I did actually recently obtain from, the Pokemon Center in New York. was a Meloetta, Push, Fleshy, both, Aria form and Purite form. so I am. Stoked about that one because Meloetta is also a Pokemon near and dear to my heart. this actually goes prior to Meloetta's existence. And so Diamond and Pearl, I was introduced to the anime, but it's also introduced to the concept of Pokemon coordinators. that was basically like my magical girl and my Pokemon in one bowl. Something that was new animation was different in the anime, like the contest battles were much more exciting for me than the other battles. of just how much of a spectacle they were.

David Hernandez 18:30

I always felt that Pokemon could have done more with the Pokemon coordinators. Cause my experience was with gen three initially, and I always felt like they could have expanded more. I kind of wish they did, but I guess it's just maybe too niched for them to do so.

Lokemon 18:42

I don't know. I mean if Pokemon Masters EXing created a game with these trainers with their fancy costumes that matched their pokemon I don't see an excuse personally, but that's that's just me. but what happened was is that like I got to a time where like I have this thing where I'm maladaptive daydream And I have like a really Overreactive imagination helps me with a lot of creative things also hinders me when I'm trying to focus on things. So, you know, two coins, heads or tails, take your pick. But, I would always imagine myself on a stage as a coordinator and seeing Meloetta for the first time. I'm like, that is. The coordinator's Pokemon, the singing, the dancing, it was everything because I do sing on the side as well. Some of the things I like to do. And so it was just having a Pokemon like that. I was like, it's here. It's amazing. It's fantastic. This was prior to fairy types actually existing. I was, always like hopping from my Pokemon to Pokemon. Like what was, what's my Pokemon? What's the Pokemon for me? And it couldn't quite like fit myself into like a bubble. Like some people were like, Oh, I like fire. Oh, like water. Oh, I just. I'll float around and gen six rolled around with the fairies and I was like, I'm home

David Hernandez 19:48

Is gen six, your favorite region?

Lokemon 19:50

no gen six is not my favorite region But it is the probably one of the most impactful for what it was it started it started an influential thing for me Gen five will always probably be my favorite just because of like That's when I really got serious about Pokemon, like super serious. I went from like just being casual to like, okay I need to consume more, I need to be more, I need to do more and it just felt right.

David Hernandez 20:13

Let's talk about the switch. So how did you treat gen five differently compared to say, maybe a gen four,

Lokemon 20:18

Gen 4, I was honestly, it took me a while to be, took me some time. Not because it was hard But because like my interests were just like fluctuating during the time and so I wasn't consistently With the game, but the anime, I was always there. Anime always have more than the game I think it's also due to the fact that I had to arc, Pokemon episodes because they were no longer in network. And that's when I began starting to, learn Japanese through Pokemon as well, because yeah. So when people were talking about my Oshawa, I'm like, who the heck is that? I know me, Jamaru. Poke a boo. What?

David Hernandez 20:55

Wow. So you learned Japanese because of the Pokemon anime.

Lokemon 20:57

Yes, it started through there. And so i'm still learning because like it kind of was like me learning it like a very boonie ish kind of feeling So like i'm trying to get my sentence structures together But that is where it started like I have to be able to enjoy this So need to be able to understand what is happening because sometimes there were episodes that were rolled out didn't have subtitles I'm, like no we're gonna figure

David Hernandez 21:19

So, would you just listen to an episode over and over and trying to pick out like key? Like he can help me understand like how this would work. So say like episode comes out. It's in Japanese, so how would you kind of translate it to understand it?

Lokemon 21:31

Honestly, just trying to watch it over and over and over Listening for words like I hear a lot because you know, like children's shows like thankfully pokemon is um, the show genre kodomo kodomo. That's a shortened for it for it, but it's Genre towards little kids and so the dialect and those shows are typically consistent You use the same words over and over and over and it's always easy. So I picked a good place to start.

David Hernandez 21:56

First off, this is crazy. This is what I love about Pokemon. Where else can you hear about a person saying they try to, learn Japanese because of Pokemon. This is great. I love it. My second question. So like you said, talked about the story. So what is it about the story? Gen five that you enjoyed?

Lokemon 22:11

I think it was deeper cause the philosophy introduced, the philosophy of like Pokemon, even though it was all, a political scheme to, overthrow an entire nation, but it was just the fact that like, do Pokemon even want to be elected in a man, it just makes you think like, huh, It's a very real thing because like, currently I'm living in Chicago right now, currently they are going through an issue with a particular, situation with similar cult energy, like, organization and the tactics used in the game kind of make you realize they're relatively the same in real life where they will instill values in people and they use that to rise in the ranks of like control over a city. You wonder like how long have these factions been existing, but it was just like the story overall, the characters, the music. It was a lot more different and I don't think it's because of myself still being growing up but also like coming to terms with like Taking in stories instead of just playing for the sake of playing actually living within a world opposed to just being a spectator

David Hernandez 23:16

Yeah that's the one thing I appreciate about what gen five as well, because it challenged the basic concept around Pokemon, because we were always instilled with the values of Pokemon and trainers work together when it comes to Pokemon battling. With Team Plasma, they said, no, you're actually kind of enslaving the Pokemon and using it for wrongdoings. And I kind of like how you highlighted it from your own, place in Chicago, because that's kind of how cults work in a way. spare time, I like to check out, cults and documentaries and podcasts about them because I always found them kind of interesting because when you look from the outside in, it's like, how do you get involved in this? But then I think team plasma is a very good example to where they send you something that seems true but they add a little smudge that's not. And that's kind of how You start seeing their side, if that makes sense. how cults work.

it's like if it makes sense to you eventually begin to convince yourself, okay, that makes sense I can see why in that perspective. It's like in stages versus understanding. What that purpose is and what their motive is. And then once you logic that to your brain, you would come to accept it. That's when things can get a lot of getting kind of dangerous.

David Hernandez 24:19

Like even just with us right. we can actually kind of understand where they're coming from. It's not like they're out of their minds. Ultimately they are, but we can kind of see where they're coming from. And it's just that small little sense of doubt that, you know, cults kind of feed off of, and then just add more and more on top of it to eventually, you know, you're wearing a white costume and a little gray, helmet, I think

of course, when we went to the future now, though, is that as we've begun to learn more about Pokemon as a whole, it's just kind of crazy that we like learned so many years later that it's not the Pokeball that makes the Pokemon shrink. It's the Pokemon themselves, meaning that Pokemon have free will of their own. Always had it. There was never a question of it.

David Hernandez 24:56

exactly. But team plasma kind of made you question it. It's like, well, what if we really aren't. You know, working together. Cause you think of Psyduck from the anime. How many times did it pop up? It's Pokeball.

Lokemon 25:04

And they used the only person who could actually communicate with Pokemon because humans couldn't communicate with communicate with Pokemon's the way that N could. And so that's what made him like the perfect, like spokesperson, this person, this person can speak about Pokemon. Therefore, whenever we make this person believe they have to believe it because he's the only one that can actually speak to Pokemon. Sure. You have like basic understanding of commands and so on and like learn behavior and Pavlovian experiences with your Pokemon, but have a full blown conversation with them.

David Hernandez 25:30

But for the most part, when you think of the Pokemon art style, it gets kind of consistent across the board. and I remember that that was one of the things they wanted to expand upon with that region. They wanted this region to be as diverse as they could.

since then, you know, what's been your favorite games to play after Gen 5?

I typically don't replay a Pokemon without an ulterior motive, to be honest, because, I like the idea of like having, trying to get more Pokemon. I'm a shiny hunter as well. So, you know, I put my hands in many baskets, play Pokemon master CX regularly Pokemon go regularly, but I am a big fan of like the DLC and sword and shield because of the access to shiny Pokemon and legendaries that we haven't had before. Now I will say that my favorite character and sword and shield, when they introduced hop, I loved hop fantastic character and real.

So how do you view Hop in the Pokemon world now? Do you feel like his character arc is justified? How it ended? Or do you feel like they could have done

I think it's justified because again, it's a very realistic approach. It's somebody whose main career choice did not work out. So they deviated into something else that they loved. They had to fail in order to figure it out. But like, hopped found What he wants to do. He found his way out. Ironically, it's almost like working in the medical field. It's like, I want to do this, but I can't do this. Let me find something else. And so he eventually runs into the path of being a Pokemon professor. He has a future that is obtainable and which even though it was the icing on the cake, isn't this what I always do personally, you don't have to do this, but the Galarian Star Tournament, I always pick him as my partner because it's like a way of giving him that feeling of victory. So as someone whose initial plan didn't fall through and didn't have a realistic approach to something eventually found their passion and something else was able to move forward with those plans. Which is one of the reasons why I think that when he was like first introduced, a lot of people didn't like him because they don't think they realized it or not, but We were all hobbit once. We were all shrouded in blind optimism that things were going to immediately go off the same way at times. Remember when Sword and Shield was in the middle of the pandemic, that's when lives were falling apart.

I played Pokemon Go the day after it was introduced. Cause I didn't like Pokemon. Keep an update on the notes, but playing it ever since the game came out, it was like an answer to a dream that I've always wanted. I always had a fantasy of Pokemon being real, Pokemon being real. And I was like with this little outlet, we just got a little closer. And so I had a friend and we would Go on adventures and hunt Pokemon all over. We would stop at churches. Churches are a big thing because there's always a gym in church. were like, we were staking out at churches because this is when the game started, we didn't have much competition back then. And so we were staking out, fighting gyms, and churches get a communities also funny. I have a horrible sense of direction So when I was off by myself, I was a wreck. I couldn't find I would just get lost We're getting lost in eternity. Like there was no route maps or anything I was horrible with direction and so I would just wander Pokemon It's also the reason why I had a curfew because I would stay out too late

Really? So how long, how late would you stay out?

past 11 midnight almost 1 in the morning Was no joke for me. I was always adamant about playing it. it was, it's a, it was a really big thing for me. I enjoyed it. And even now, still play to this day. And I play with my coworkers as well. What I'm wanting to branch off and do is I'm expanding a little more. I know Pokemon Go has like an app where like you can like meet up with a group of people and so I'm probably gonna start meeting up with like the metropolitan people like the parks, whatever, so I can make more friends in the game. I'm wanting to expand the reach of the horizon.

That's great. So how do you like to play Pokemon go?

Lokemon 32:23

two different times. So I like to, one is, um, when I'm like, I'm working, I'm a busy person. And so a lot of times I have to sit, have to squat. And so I'm like, okay, I'll catch all the Pokemon I can't run into, try to complete as many research tasks. I'm on the go. When I'm on the go and I'm like moving, like I'm on a train, I'm trying to catch all the Pokestops trying to stock up. Like it's like my stocking period. And then there are days where like, okay, you know what? We're going to dedicate like a day to playing this game. I wanna go out, wanna do things, so like I'll take myself out on a date, but there's always Pokemon Go within the reach of said date, especially whenever I'm going to a new place that I've never before, I like to collect the little Pokestops and those Aces that I probably won't visit frequently, I think it's like, it's a pretty fun thing for me.

Postcards, Pokemon as well because, there was a time before it was, the early days of Pokemon Go. It was very regionally focused, like, I mean, highly regionally focused because, I remember the same year Pokemon Go came out. I actually graduated from high school. And my graduation gift, my uncle let me visit him in California. I have never seen so many fire types in my life. I said, this is where they've all been. Starving like I've been starving. I was like on a fire hunt fire type hunting spree It's like i'll never see these again because in windy city They did a really funny job because like chicago was just rivers So you run with a lot of water types and iced flying types and we have the piers like I can always know where my steel Types are which is also a pretty fun thing I had like a mapped out where all the pokemon was if I wanted to go to a steel type I visit navy pier because the pier for whatever reason is where all the steel types would congregate And so along the rivers and the boardwalks, I'm guaranteed to find a water type,

So, you said you made your own, region out of Chicago?

Yes. Currently in the making, but, yes, I'm making is a Pokemon region based on Chicago.

Let's talk about the starters. what are the three starters that you have in mind for Chicago?

So starters, so far I have basically a grass possum I've named Grossom, which, it's a, um, hidden ability. It plays on the gimmick of it falling asleep and still being able to fight. And like, an astral projection kind of thing.

It's almost like a sleep, talk kind of thing.

different. So it's status is sleep, but it's still active and it's typing changes from grass to Grass/Ghost.

and so sleeping does not inhibit its ability to fight. So now with a sleep status, it gains a new attack. which adds a different layer strategies,

at a before. Yeah. So I read doing the way, a lot of Pokemon in my personal opinion needed a long update. And so I made some changes with the typing as well. I've also recognized that electric type is like a four starter. And so, what I have is, I'm still working on remaking them because I'm basing them off of superheroes. That's the theme of the game together, the theme of the region is superheroes. so, another, one is, basically a snow owl. Which every so often, it's a rare occurrence, but in the wintertime it gets a pretty fierce winter. It's not this one, it's not a good example of our, current state. Usually we'll have a lot worse winters. We've been pretty blessed. But, it's a snow owl. It's a snow owl, but I'm calling it now. So like an hour of knowledge and it will basically get an hour glasses. That's like the silly little gimmick and it'll eventually evolve into its own little signature superhero. another one I'm still working on, but it's a skunk. I call it a perfume, which is basically because I don't see skunk Pokemon's too often. And so this one uses perfume. the fumes from the flames that it bodies and create as like a noxious gas. So it plays on the difference. It's going to be like a fire poison type.

David Hernandez 36:24

So, I remember that because I looked on your Instagram, looking at your art. I love Snau. I love the design because it looks like a little, Eskimo.

that design for SNOW will actually change because, it went through a different idea for a different direction. And, um, so I haven't released that design yet because I also haven't made the design yet, that's expected to change. So right now, currently the only one that like exists in physical form that makes sense right now is, Grossom and Furfume, those two base designs won't change.

So I know that you like to make fake Pokemon, you know, you're making a fake region. What made you want to start doing this?

I remember seeing, art of trainers or people who have made, I call them trainers, I've called everyone trainers, of their own mods, their own regions. And I just remember, like, just having so much fun doing it. And then eventually, I just started doing it. And I said, what if Q, if I could, like, Make people believe that this is a fake mod And so I created my very first fake mod based off my favorite dessert, which is a root beer float and root beer was born And root Beer. has root beer. Yeah, it's become

the mascot of my everything like you can probably find it on my social media pages. I even made like Fake Pokemon cards were the root bear design on it as well. and that's what started it all. And it got a lot of traction. And it's like, you know what? I'm sure I can keep doing this. And then I kept doing it. And then I kept doing it. And eventually I was like, what if I took things further? Cause I went to school for game design and still looking for a, like the perfect outlet to just make it happen. Cause you know, job marketing gets kind of funky And that's what led to. Me moving further and now I'm a part of a community where I have fellow creators and I'm learning and watching their design. It's like, wow, I first I felt like I was just all by myself in a bubble, not entirely isolated, but I didn't have everybody around my way doing it. But then eventually I'm finding people who live in the same city as me sharing the same interest. Hello. Crazy because I incorporated fake mon are into my stream because I streamed Pokemon games and then she said my fellow streaming peers They all like that like them. Okay, let's do more of it. And that just became my known thing It's just what I do. And I was like, I want to reach people but I also need to reach myself. I went back to the origin the foundation where everything started pokemon. Pokemon is where everything started and I just took it to my art. I just focused on just being happy for once. And in my happiness, I have found friends. I have made communities. I have joined communities. I am in a really good spot with it

It's a school teacher who works as a librarian in an abandoned school, and so they converted the school into a gym leader so that it can keep standing, and so that people can keep learning about the world around them, regardless of how impoverished the community has become.

I think that'd be a good second gem. but it's going to be a wedding planner. So it's going to be a double battle to where they'll have two opposite kind of Pokemon who kind of go back and back. So you think of, say Meowth and Delcatty. Skitty would be Evolved. And then the second one would be a dog. So it's going to be, I think, Herdier is the Evolved form of Lillipup, right?

Yeah like an Olympic athlete who's now like a retired person and now they run like a little gym or even like a boxing gym. What's like a boxing gym? I don't get to see those too often. Those two pretty good standard for a light year load of fighting, grapple lock because grapple lock is good for submission techniques and something that people can learn in their day to day life also helps them out as well. I'm thinking with those three are pretty solid, maybe even a, uh, let's see, Hip on top because Capoeira is very fun and also a pretty accessible fighting style. And let's see here. So there's Capoeira, Submission takedowns, regular boxing. So Hitmonchamp for boxing. As well. Cause boxing is also pretty accessible. I'm thinking the puzzle, isn't too hard, but it probably be like trivia, on fighting styles and the names of like moves and things like that. And every time you get it right, you hear like the bell and I'll have like the person working on the card question three or question four.

So it's my turn. I'm gonna add a little craziness to this gym, a little too kind to my taste. I'm gonna add a poison gym. It's run by A very obsessed exterminator who absolutely despises bug Pokemon, like picture, like all the censored signs of bug posters and wanted posters of like bug Pokemon, because he just absolutely hates them. And it came from a memory to where he got trapped in a room full of, uh, Weedle stuff like that. ever then, he's had an obsession to get rid of any bug Pokemon throughout the entire region. It's a poison gym. So he goes around and exterminates all the bug Pokemon with the, you know, the poison and stuff like that.

And it will also, Double in like, you'll have to like learn a little bit of coding, do some baby coding in the gym challenge. And to get the bug type Pokemon, the gym, the ACE, Vickavolt or Vickavolt. ACE is Vickavolt. Definitely has to be that. Orbeetle, definitely Orbeetle will be, another play on it. especially cause the bugs, I get the bug electric mixing things around. Durant, Definitely a Durant, sturdy bug. Volcarona to represent like firewall. But yeah, internet, coding, space, cafe, all that jazz.

So we're on the sixth gym leader. I'm gonna go with a zookeeper for the sixth gym. He's a water focused gym and he likes to have turtle Pokemon.

I'm thinking a flying type, Pokemon Hawlucha, that's a good one. Like they do it, like they're always doing a little dive press. some other ones for a good one, Altaria. And Skarmory. Noivern. Mix things up a bit. Sigilyph as well. I like the idea of just having a versatile mix of flying types, like nothing's consistent about it, and it's just all free.

You got the little green lights going around cause you know, it's sciencey or whatever. like almost like a lab. you walk your way through the maze, similar to how the first gym was Giovanni, but you add like more, you know, walls to get through. And then each time you run into area, you've ran into just a random AI generated employee or whatever and the gym is going to be steel type, by the way.

They, focus on making little boxes in the community that. feed people like random foods and you'll find them all throughout the region with like little encouraging notes. And you go into their domain and it's a cottage, kind of similar to like Courage the Cowardly Dog. And you go inside of the house, plants everywhere. It's a little greenhouse. It's a mixture of grass and, modern architect. And it's just a little old grandma. And she makes you tea before a battle.

gosh, and she's like, oh, would you come for a cup of tea?

Yes. And that's like, she'll heal your Pokemon if you had not healed your Pokemon prior to the Elite Four battle. She'll heal your Pokemon too, when you would like to save her cookies before we actually get into the battle. And then she's an absolute monster. In the battle. Her starting Pokemon is a Tropius, cause Pokemon that bears fruit to give people. Next one is, a Bombazil, because Snorva has Snorva berries. The next one is Torterra, because Torterra and Grotto, they have seeds that grow in their trees that feed other Pokemon. So the first three are already like Pokemon of bounty. They have their hands in everything that powers through the city, the generators, transportation, and They're always around subtly and surely. They run the power plants. They found the cities and all of that jazz. They're a part of the reason why, everything moves like a well oiled machine. And he runs like a little appliance company as well. And his team is just all the Rotom forms. Yeah. but they're, but each of the real time, it's not just like an ordinary fridge or an ordinary washer. These are all name brand. These are all his stuff. These are all his brands. each of like his refrigerator or we sell that washer He said a fan and they're rotom fusion friendly.
