In this Revelation passage, Jesus acknowledged the faithful witness of Antipas the martyr at Pergamum. He held Antipas up as a model for the church at Pergamum.

That fallen angel was active in the city, working to corrupt Christians and prevent the gospel from spreading. To counteract that, Jesus remembers the amazing faith of Antipas who died rather than deny Jesus. We need to have before us the stories of the martyrs to strengthen and give us courage.
