Revelation 12:7-17 is the text for this sermon entitled, "The War in Heaven."

There is so much going on in this narrative about the war that broke out in heaven. There was in heaven an ongoing battle, not just a sudden war. In our text for today, Michael and his angels fought against the dragon and his angels. The dragon fought back. When we talk about Satan, he is pictured in Scripture as fighting back against God and his people. Satan is not going to take defeat lying down! This fighting back is, “warring against” someone.

People only fight about what is important to them. What here  was important to Satan? We get two small clues in verse eight. He was not strong enough, and he lost his place in heaven. Three times in this narrative, we hear that Satan was hurled to the earth! The red dragon was defeated in heaven and hurled down to the earth in defeat with force, divine power, and intention. His heavenly presence is demoted to an earthly presence.

We get the picture over and over that Satan’s plans are always thwarted by God. No matter what Satan plans to do, God always outmaneuvers him!
