Matthew 1:1-17 is the text for this sermon entitled, "The Genealogy of Jesus."

Matthew turns a dull genealogy to a reasoned defense for the universal nature of evangelism and the good news! He lays out the case to demonstrate that the Christ-promising God worked through Israel’s history to bring about his divine purposes. We learn a great deal about God the Father from this genealogy.

Christ means the “Anointed One” or Messiah, a royal title rather than a last name. The Jewish Messianic expectation of the first century was a combination of Divine vindication against Israel’s enemies, and a military leader, the “Righteous One,” who lead Israel to final victory and conquest over Rome. Yet, Matthew must present a different Messiah as he records the ministry of Jesus.
