During the 80s and 90s, Dean Gates worked as a makeup effects artist on Day of the Dead, Invasion USA, Maximum Overdrive, Blue Velvet, Raw Deal, King Kong Lives, The Return of Swamp Thing, The Abyss, Maniac Cop 2, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Jurassic Park, Phantasm III, Coneheads, and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Early on, Dean worked with the Godfather of Gore - Tom Savini, cult filmmaker William Grefé (Gra·fay), and served as a production assistant on Scarface. Dean has worked on movies produced by Roger Corman and Dino De Laurentiis and directed by David Lynch, Brian De Palma, Abel Farrara, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron, Stephen King, George Romero, and Jim Wynorski. He has made up, maimed, or killed actors Dennis Hopper, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Chuck Norris, Bruce Campbell, Richard Gere, Dick Durock, John Chandler, Robert Vaughn, Robert Z'Dar, and William Campbell. Dean won an Emmy Award for his work on Star Trek Deep Space Nine. He worked on the effects team that won an Academy Award for The Abyss. Over the last 20 years, he has produced and directed over 75 commercials and documentaries. His latest project is producing the upcoming science fiction thriller, Angel.
