In conversation with SRI grantees Jacob Schoffl and Kiera Tranter

In this episode,  Christine Hendry, CEO of the Spinal Research Institute, chats with two standout grant recipients for ISCoS 2023, Jacob Schoffl and Kiera Tranter to discuss their research.  Jacob discusses research on the effects of spinal cord injury on autonomic and psychosocial health. Meanwhile, Kiera, a physiotherapist shares her invaluable insights on clinical practice guidelines.

I'm Christine Hendry. I'm the CEO of the Spinal Research Institute and it's day three of the Excos conference. I'm here with two of the SRI's grant recipients, Jake and Kira, so would you like to introduce yourself and tell us a little bit about?

your research. So my name is Jake Shuffle, I'm from the University of Sydney, the John Walsh Centre, and my research looks at breathing by feedback technique in the dots of spinal cord injury and how it affects autonomic and psychosocial health.

Great, kira. Yeah, so I'm a physio by trade and I'm currently doing my PhD at the University of Sydney as well, working through the John Walsh Centre for Rehabilitation Research. My research focus more around clinical practice guidelines, so I've worked with Joe and Lisa around those and just did a small section of those around their spiritaries, and now we're looking at implementing those guidelines and also how we interpret that as a man Great. And so we're now on day three of the conference. It's very intense but it does go very fast. Jake, what have you enjoyed about the conference this?

year. I think the biggest thing I've taken away from this is just meeting people. When you're researching, all you see is just a name, and it's really nice to put a name to a face and just be able to talk to those people. And attending other sort of different lectures, you do get a lot of different ideas from other people you might not have thought about. So I'm pretty excited to go home and try and implement that between research.

Fantastic, kira. Yeah, I think I really echo Jake's remarks with that. The networking and ability to meet people that you ordinarily would have met has been probably my favourite thing, and I feel like connecting with other physios and researchers have definitely come away with some thought-provoking kind of material that I think will definitely help me moving forward. So that's good, that's fantastic, great thanks so much for your time, thank you, thank you, thanks.
