Hello and welcome to the ISCOS podcast SCI Care what Really Matters. I'm Michael Failings, professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto, and I'm the Scientific and Research Chair of ISCOS, as well as the new editor-in-chief of Spinal Cord, and we're here to introduce you to the exciting upcoming 2024 ISCOS meeting in Antwerp, belgium, and I have the privilege of being joined by Dr Janneke Stolwek, part of the local organizing committee, and, janneke, perhaps you could introduce yourself as well.

Great. Thank you, michael. Yeah, my name is Janneke. I work as a PRM physician at the Hoogstad Rehabilitation, which is a rehabilitation center in Utrecht in the Netherlands, and I also work as associate professor at the University Hospital in Utrecht, and I'm well part of the local organizing committee, as you already said for this amazing upcoming ISCOS 2024.

Fantastic. So this will be the 63rd annual meeting of ISCOS and I think it will prove to be quite a special meeting. There's a broad variety of very interesting and innovative themes that will comprise a significant component of the meeting, and these will revolve around issues such as aging and secondary complications, female health, psychological and psychosocial issues of spinal cord injury, translational clinical research, pediatric and adolescent health. Janneke, perhaps you might provide a few additional perspectives about what will be further unique, about the venue of Antwerp and about the 2024 ISCOS meeting.

Yeah, I think. Well, antwerp in itself, of course, is a unique venue. It's a beautiful ancient Flemish city, lots of things to see there, and the venue itself Michael, is next to the zoo and when you're standing in some of the rooms you can even look inside the zoo, so you can see the animals from the venue itself. But maybe we should start before the meeting, because there are also pre-conference meetings, of course, and there's a nurse study day and there's a para sport pre-conference. And why para sport pre-conference? Well, of course, we've just had the paralympics at the end of august, beginning of sept September, in Paris, which is very close by Antwerp. So we have a very interesting para-sport pre-conference with a lot of info. It's a mix between science, translational research and also athletes' own perspectives, so I think that's unique in this ISCOS meeting.

Fantastic. I think it should prove to be extremely special. I'm personally quite excited about going to Antwerp. I've heard it's a beautiful city. I've actually not been there.
