Episode 72 - The missing piece in ‘getting things done’

Welcome to this episode of the managing the smart mind podcast with Master Certified Coach Else Kramer, a.k.a. Coach Kramer.

Hello wonderfully smart human,

Welcome to this fifth mini-cast giving you a sneak peek into my new membership community, Shamelessly Smart.

So far we’ve covered finding your Big Thing, Impact Projects, your brain being a bit of a brat and your fear of your inner critic.

Is that enough to get and keep going?

Nope.

In most teaching on time management, planning, and scheduling there is an important piece missing.

Energy.

What use is having a well-laid-out schedule when you haven’t got enough energy to execute?

What are you supposed to do with your free time if you’re too exhausted to get off the couch?

Before you start planning and scheduling, you need to learn how to manage your energy.

Especially if you have a unique brain.

What drains you?

What delights and recharges you?

And what is a ‘fair deal’, as in: what things are you happy to pay an energy price for because you really like the ROI?

You want to design your work and life in a way that optimises for energy.

That means you must include plenty of ‘power packs’ (yes, I’m a gamer): things that nurture, excite, or help you recharge in some way.

It could be rest.

It could be crafting, cooking, or creating.

If you’re in introvert: reading a book.

If you’re an extrovert: meeting with friends.

And it means eliminating the energy drains.

Internal (for example, the negative inner chatter we talked about yesterday).

And external: you must try to reduce the amount of activities, people, places, things that exhaust you.

That includes taking a hard look at your surroundings.

What messes do you need to clear up - both tangible and intangible?

I shared a fun exercise for getting started with this last Friday: going on a ten-minute Guilt Trip through your house and then playing Tinder with your to-do’s. I’l drop a link in the show notes so you can find it and play.

But before you start cleaning up messes and redesigning your life, you need to take stock.

Grab a piece of paper and create three columns:

Draining - Energising - Neutral

Start with activities, then people, places and things.

Get clear on where your energy goes - and where you WANT it to go.

And then start redesigning your life to optimise for it.

In Shamelessly Smart you’ll learn my method to work with your energy in the most delightful way.

Again, you can totally do this on your own, I’ve given you plenty of things to work with.

And you can make it easier, faster and more fun by doing it together with me and a bunch of other smart humans.

IF that’s what you prefer you want to enrol in Shamelessly Smart as a Founding member.

Go to www.coachkramer.org/shamelessly-smart if you haven’t already, and sign up.

And remember: you can’t just keep pushing yourself - you need an energy policy in place.

So be smart - recharge.
