Welcome back to the Vita English Podcast! I'm your host, Faith, and I'm so happy you’re tuning in today.

In my English classes, my students always have the opportunity to ask questions about vocabulary, grammar, and culture. During a recent class, one of my students asked me about the word "wonky," and I thought it would be helpful to explain it to all of you.

But before we begin, I want to let you know that you can be a part of this conversation too. Just like my students, you can ask me questions or suggest topics by emailing me at info@vitaenglish.ca. I love hearing from my listeners, and I might even feature you on an upcoming episode.

Now, let's delve into today's topic: the word "wonky."

So, what does "wonky" mean? Well, when something is wonky, it means that it feels a bit off or not quite right. It's like when things don't work properly or seem a little unstable.

For example, you might say, "The chair I'm sitting in feels wonky." This means the chair is unsteady or unstable, making you feel a bit uneasy like you might fall or the chair might break.

Another example is this, "After I dropped my phone, the screen started acting wonky." This indicates that the phone's screen is behaving strangely or not working properly after the drop. I know all about this example because after I dropped my phone in the toilet, it started acting wonky.

Another way to use "wonky" is when you're not feeling well. Sometimes, you might wake up with a headache or an upset stomach. You could say, "I feel wonky today." This means you feel a bit off or not quite yourself.

Now, let me share a personal experience of feeling wonky. So, as I’ve mentioned in previous episodes, I’m a night owl- I love to stay up late. But sometimes I stay up too late, and I don’t get enough sleep. When this happens I always feel wonky the next day. I can’t concentrate, and I find  even simple tasks very challenging.

Alright, here's a question for you, my listeners. Can you think of a time when you encountered something wonky? It could be a situation, an object, or even a person that made you feel a bit off. Or maybe you felt wonky after not getting a great sleep or having a long day. How did you handle it? Did you find a way to fix the wonkiness or adapt to the situation? I'd love to hear your stories and give you a chance to practice using the word "wonky.”

So, please share your wonky encounters by emailing me at info@vitaenglish.ca.

Thank you for listening to the Vita English Podcast. Until next time, I wish you the best on your English language journey– remember, when it comes to English-  use it, live it, love it, and fluency will follow! Goodbye!
