Speaker 1:Let's talk about burnout prevention. Here's the thing I have been at the point of burnout. I know what that feels like, and I'm sure you do too. We often talk about feeling overwhelmed, stressed and stuck. However, when I ask my clients if they are burnt out, they don't know what to answer. I, too, was once in their shoes. I didn't know what actually being at the point of burnout meant. I mean, what does being burnt out look like? Anyway?
Speaker 1:An article in Psychology Today defines burnout as a state of emotional, mental and often physical exhaustion brought on by prolonged or repeated stress. It is thought to occur, in the majority of cases, as a result of job-related stress. However, it also shows up in parenting or caretaking roles. And here's the thing, my fellow mom, what if you have to juggle a job and a parenting role? Or maybe you have to juggle all three of those type of situations? Then you, my friend, must pay attention. If this is you, it is so important that you try to establish a good, solid self-care routine to get you back on track, to a healthier state of mind and to a place of burnout prevention. Of course, that goes without saying that you should always consult with a professional and be evaluated for depression, as some of the symptoms for burnout can be very similar to symptoms for depression. So if this is you, make sure and try to seek a healthcare professional in your network if you are confused about what you might be feeling.
Speaker 1:Okay, so earlier I said that I know what this is like. Let me tell you how I noticed. It can sometimes be difficult to notice, because you keep going and going and going and and don't realize how much your body is capable or incapable of doing. It's almost like thinking of yourself as a phone. You get that alert that there's only 20% battery life remaining, and then 10%, and you keep clicking ignore instead of plugging it in, until it finally powers out and forces you to charge it. We're like that as well. Right, we think we can continue because there's still 20%, there's still 10%, so let's just keep going because there's still more energy in us.
Speaker 1:Well, the same thing happened for me. I kept ignoring certain signs that I wasn't taking very good care of myself, especially in those early motherhood, newborn days. I remember hardly ever drinking a full glass of water in an entire day. Other days involved knowing I was due for my health exams and not knowing where to fit them in my schedule, so I just kept postponing them Until one day, here I was sick and having to go to the ER. When I think back, your body tells you, just like the cell phone does, and if you don't plug it in, your body powers out as well, just like a phone, forcing you to do something about it.
Speaker 1:Let me tell you what I did to get back on track. First of all, I had to care. I had to care enough of what I meant to the world, and that is to say what I meant to my children, my husband, my family, and what I meant for myself. I had to value myself enough as a person to want to be healthy, to serve the purpose that I was built for by God and to take this seriously. I had to change what I was doing and the way I was doing things, because obviously that wasn't working.
Speaker 1:I started with a list of all the things that I knew helped me thrive in the past. I did not try to do anything new or anything out of my comfort zone or anything out of my comfort zone. For example, I didn't go and roll in a boot camp because that is not my style and I knew I would give up, feel like I failed and become more unmotivated. I went with what already worked for me. I started with just one thing at a time. I started to getting my prayer and meditation routine back on track. I had let this go and I really truly thrive with starting my day with prayer and silence. Next I added an exercise routine, and for me, this was yoga. It can be whatever works for you. For example, if walking is what makes you thrive, then just go for walking. Don't try to become the next athlete. Just go with what works for you. Next, I added something related to love, because I have always wanted to show up for my people with lots of love, so for me, it was hugs and kisses from my kids and husband and expressing love and friendship to other family and friends in the best capacity that I knew how, be it a kind note, a text or a phone call. After that, I added a money minute, because this is important for me to be aware of financial decisions I need to make for my home and for my business.
Speaker 1:Prior to becoming a mom, I had self-care down to a tee, so I tried to add one self-care event every week that is enjoyable and fun, such as a massage, a dinner with a friend or watching Friends or the Big Bang Theory. Learning is so important for me, so I try to also learn something new through a class, a blog, a podcast or anything where I can find new information. In addition, I read a book before bed and read with my kids as well, as you all know from the book club that I host To learn more on that. Make sure to follow along or sign up to receive my 10 favorite books freebie. Lastly, I try to eat something healthy every day. This I struggle with more because I'm not a good meal prep person, but trying to improve more healthier habits into the way I snack. All of this, my friend, equates to my solid self-care routine that I now practice on the daily. It's become somewhat of a ritual now.
Speaker 1:I created this self-care checklist with the self-care acronym so you too, can follow along and implement some of these things into your life. Downloading this will prove just as useful If you choose to go for it and grab my freebie. I hope that it is just as useful in preventing burnout for you as it did for me.
