The Commentary.

Do you consider yourself informed, educated and talented enough to convincingly review a film on the basis of the most banal and binary terms of good or bad? Do you know the difference? Granted, that subjectivity runs deep into our personal bias, washing the backlog of watched films for varying reasons, but, like the bean counters like to say, at the end of the day, was the film you just watched good or was it not-so-good? Or did it stink?  Good, now we can have some fun, because I am going to ask you another question. Recall in your cerebral data banks the worst movie you have ever seen. Got it? Were you as a result: Offended, disgusted, annoyed, angry, or, and here is the kicker, somehow enlightened by the experience?

If you choose the latter, you win. Get it? Because in the complete history of our movie watching, the consummate reviewer will develop the capacity to appreciate the suffering and embrace (a few) painful pictures. Without them we would never have scope enough to fully appreciate their opposites; the spectacular, sublime, the bone fide creme de la creme best of the best. It is yin and yang in its technicolor brilliance (black and white). Or, put another way, even the worst Jack Nicholson film is better than my best. By a mile. By a hundred miles.

But you be the judge. Maybe this is your thing. I am OK with that. Tell me I’m wrong. Is this a 2A issue? No. I get to decide. That is a part of my job. Bringing the best possible cinema to our theatre I can find. Is this a church? No. As Clint might say, go ahead, make my day - and then get off my lawn.

This is a perfect example of a film better suited for a private party screening. Invite 230 of your like-minded pals and we’ll show it. But as a general market feature, it fails by almost any measure, including those listed above.

Tony Goldwyn's EZRA follows Max Bernal (Bobby Cannavale), a stand-up comedian living with his father (Robert De Niro), while struggling to co-parent his autistic son Ezra (introducing William Fitzgerald) with his ex-wife, Jenna (Rose Byrne). When forced to confront difficult decisions about their son's future, Max and Ezra embark on a cross-country road trip that has a transcendent impact on both their lives. I wish Di Nero would forget about comedy and focus on what he is truly gifted to do, the roles he was born to play, the jobs only he could pull off. You know, paint houses.

GOONIES. Is it summer yet? Are you ready for some nostalgic throw-back fun? Good, me too. There is probably nothing new I can tell you about this one, as everybody this side of the Rocky Mountains knows it was filmed in Astoria, features a teen-age Samwise Gamgee and was Directed by the severely underrated Richard Donner.

ANOTHER MAN’S TREASURE. Since 1960 the Rotary Club of BI has staged what has become “the biggest rummage sale in the world”, right here in our backyards every 4th of July weekend. Island Treasure Steve Stollee cobbled together an hour’s worth of highlights from over 150 hours of footage in the creation of his 2017 epic film.
