ONCE AN ENEMY, Chapter 7

On all fronts, in Japan, at Manhattan Project HQ, and in Brookings, the war is taking a toll. US casualties and the low American morale caused by, but not limited to, the Japanese success with their new ‘Special Forces Group’ (a softer title than kamikaze) has General Groves setting an impossible test date for the new ‘gadget’,  they feel has the potential to end the bloodshed. Howard gets another history lesson from Yoriko on a drive to Crescent City and the boys in the Harbor Cafe deal with the bad news that FDR has died. Nobou is very pleased with the progress of his fledgling group of young pilots as they practice for their own day of infamy, advising them to “come out of the sky like flying dragons, dive fast and steep into the ship just beneath the bridge,” adding the footnote, “do not close your eyes, and do not blink,” to the instructions. The pivotal chapter ends with Capt Rambeck providing a recap of the American casualties and a mention of the top-secret facility up in Hanford, WA that was hit with something called a balloon bomb.

Thanks for listening folks, I apologize for my sore throat and congestion, but, as they say, the show must go on.

Over and out.
