Commentary:

GOONIES. Please note that Monday night is the last night of this 1985 classic. Parents be advised that although it carries a PG rating there are a few rather scary and risqué scenes that MIGHT NOT BE APPROPRIATE FOR KIDS UNDER 11. I say this with the full realization that maturity levels and street-smarts of kids these days is waaaay more ‘evolved’ than those in 1985, but we have had a few incidents where Mom or Dad had to escort a sensitive child out to the lobby for a time out. This  film remains a classic example of the magic of the movies, Spielberg style. If you have ever wondered what the term ‘over the top’ means in Hollywood parlance, please pay particular attention to the GOONIES score as a perfect example. And the acting by the adults, oh boy, takes campy to an altogether different universe. This by design of course, but occasionally you might find your eyeballs rolling. Almost two hours worth of adolescent adventure telling a three-act story of good versus evil. Death is easy - comedy is hard. But Director Richard Donner has the chops to make it happen.

KINDS of KINDNESS. Greek auteur Yargos Lathimos might be one-third Wes Anderson, one-third Ari Astor and one-third Franz Kafka. Whew! Filmmakers, cinematographers and writers from Athens to Solvang talk of him much in the same way that we once spoke of Kubrick. This one picks up right where POOR THINGS left off. A thin plot but thick on visuals capturing the emotion and utter absurdities of the world we have created for ourselves. All this through the winking lens of a master of his medium. Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons and Willem Dafoe are Lathinmos’ usual suspects, lined up and laughing at all those who’s pretentious self-seriousness requires an orderly universe.

ANOTHER MAN’S TREASURE. Unless you have been living under Frog Rock since Nixon, Island Treasure Steve Stollee painstakingly cobbled together a wonderful documentary on the Rotary Auction in 2017. With over 150 hours of footage to cut with Steve’s opus on the largest rummage sale in the world is a full-color celebration of the event that annually raises half a mil in one day. All put back into the community. AMT runs a touch over an hour and will delight even the newest of the Island newcomers. The free screening is Friday night, July 5 @ 8pm and will feature Steve with a Q&A after the screening. Special thanks to Bill Marler and Karla Cole for their sponsorship of the project.

WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU? BHS grads Sebastian Scales and Tom Jorza are not ordinary. Together they have been through the trauma wringer - and have emerged enlightened by their experiences - as stand up comedians and filmmakers. Remember when I mentioned above that death is easy but comedy is hard? This is that. Currently shopping their 25 minute doc in Hollywood, we are proud to present their work on the big screen at the HLT. Saturday, July 6 @ 4pm we’ll screen the film and then join Sebastian and Tom as they follow it up with a live performance and then a Q&A. Free admission. Please come out and support these courageous kids, inspiration is guaranteed!

Happy Fourth folks. My dogs beg you to not light up.
