YE OL’ COMMENTARY,

You will notice that I have included an asterisk after the playing times of the Francis Ford Coppola epic that has been thirty years in the making. Controversy has been on FFC’s heels since he was first struck by the lightening bolt of creative inspiration sometime around the release of GODFATHER THREE.  A meanderingly complex plot line, production costs, the sale of his wine estate and three decades of annual trips around the sun later, how the heck could one possible expect us to pinpoint an exact playing time? It may still be in post!  So until official conformation, 3:45 & 6:30 will have to suffice. I will let you know next week.

DIDI. The tagline claims “For anyone who has ever been a teenager”. Cool. Good one marketing dept. A Taiwanese-American teenager (natch) learns about the important things in life in somewhat unorthodox, but familiar ways to anyone who has been a teenager. I am especially fond of the “You screwed up - but I still love you” trope. Powerful and timely.

THE MATRIX. You know the story. Only three screenings, Thurs 9.19 @ 7 and twice on Sunday 9.22 @ 3 & 7. Go Neo.

MAYA and the WAVE,  Our heroine has a brush with Mr Death. Undaunted, she returns to chase her dream of riding the biggest, baddest, scariest waves on the planet, territory ruled over by a patriarchal gaggle of waterlogged one-demential thrill seekers. You know the type. Maya Gabiera faces her deepest fears in this inspiring documentary of courage, hope, dedication and discipline.

BOOM - THE SONICS. In the early 60’s the Seattle music scene was on the doorstep of taking over the world. And if it wasn’t for the Fab Four, it probably would have done it way quicker that the twenty years it actually took. The Sonics were the predecessors to The Kinsmen, Moby Grape, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Pearl Jam and ten thousand garage bands of varying degrees of musical competence.

This, then is their story. Seattle’s very own Sonics. Anyone who has ever lived in the GPNW or has ever strummed an A chord on a Silvertone guitar needs to see this.

PARIS, TEXAS. Wim Wender’s 1984 classic tale of desperation, relationships gone bad, and reconciliation. Or at least the attempt thereof. That it keeps a 9.1 rating at IMDB after forty years is testimony to its both its staying power and timeless inclusion in every top ten list from Winslow, (WA & AZ) to Paris, TX. We think it deserves a robust four-day run, Hope you do too.

Thanks to everyone who came our Friday night for the GYPSY SOUL concert. Former Islander Cillette Swann and guitar virtuoso Roman Moreykit put on one heck of a show for a greatly appreciative audience. We hope to have them back in April. Next up is VICTIMS of LOVE, arguably to best of the Eagles tribute bands. That will happen on October 12 at 7. Tickets here.

That’s a wrap folks. All you need to know. Hope to see you soon at the good ol’ HLT. On a dark desert highway……….
