Chip Talks: The Science Behind Cannabinoids
The Endocannabinoid System: How it Works and Why it Matters
In a recent video, health expert Chip dives deeper into the science behind the endocannabinoid system - a critical system in the human body that regulates everything from appetite to mood to inflammation. While many associate this system with marijuana, Chip explains that the endocannabinoid system evolved long before cannabis and is found in all vertebrates, including our pets.
On a cellular level, the endocannabinoid system consists of endocannabinoids produced within our bodies as well as cannabinoid receptors on cell surfaces. Endocannabinoids like anandamide are synthesized from dietary fats that we consume - omega-3s, omega-6s, and omega-9s. That's why nutrition is key for a properly-functioning endocannabinoid system.
The two main cannabinoid receptors are CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors handle functions of the brain, central nervous system, organs, and glands, while CB2 receptors regulate immune function and inflammation. When we consume phytocannabinoids from plants, they can bind with these receptors to influence physiological processes.
Chip notes that while our bodies produce endocannabinoids internally, we can supplement them with cannabinoids from plants like cannabis. The synergy between plant compounds and our native endocannabinoid system is still being uncovered, but it holds great promise from a health perspective. Fine-tuning endocannabinoid tone could alleviate conditions from anxiety and depression to arthritis and seizures.
Understanding this critical network of chemical messengers could be the key to unlocking better health. Chip's video provides crucial background on how to support endocannabinoid function through lifestyle strategies like diet, exercise, stress relief, and phytocannabinoid supplementation where appropriate.
