Matt:

Hello everyone, this is Matt. I'm excited to introduce to you our new short format for Matt and Friends Drink the Universe, where we will explore a variety of alcohol-related topics in five minutes or less. We will release the shorter features in between our regular episodes. Welcome for the first time to Alkohology. I wonder why they call it a cocktail. Yes, I'd like to know more about the Avenus Vinifera. I'm very interested in the terroir. We talking about two carbons, six hydrogen and one oxygen atom. We talking about ethyl alcohol Today, cinco de Mayo.

Matt:

Cinco de Mayo, or the 5th of May, celebrates the date of the Mexican Army's May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla. During the Franco-Mexican War In 1861, mexico declared a temporary moratorium on the repayment of foreign debts, prompting France, britain and Spain to send naval forces to Veracruz to demand payment. While Britain and Spain negotiated with Mexico and withdrew their forces, france, under the leadership of Emperor Napoleon III, saw an opportunity to establish a foothold in Mexico and expand its influence in the region. Emperor Napoleon aimed to establish a French-controlled monarchy in Mexico, with the ultimate goal of creating a buffer state between the United States and Confederate States of America during the American Civil War. Despite being outnumbered and poorly equipped, the Mexican army, led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, managed to achieve a decisive victory over the better trained and better equipped French forces. The Mexican victory at Pueblo was a significant morale boost for the Mexican people and symbolized their resistance against foreign intervention and imperial ambitions.

Matt:

Cinco de Mayo celebrations, which originated in the Mexican state of Puebla, were initially observed as a regional holiday and the festivities were relatively modest. However, over time, the holiday gained broader significance, especially among Mexican communities in the United States. In the late 20th century, cinco de Mayo celebrations became increasingly popular in the US, fueled by cultural pride and commercial interests. Today, cinco de Mayo is celebrated not only in Mexico, but in various parts of the US and all around the world. In countries with significant Mexican populations, the holiday is marked by parades, music performances and traditional Mexican cuisine. In the United States, cinco de Mayo is seen as an opportunity to gather with family, friends and maybe more than a few drinks.

Matt:

The association of Cinco de Mayo with alcohol is largely due to the many tequila and Mexican beer brands that run large marketing campaigns leading up to May 5th, promoting their products as essential for Cinco de Mayo gatherings. The most popular of these is tequila, which is distilled from the Blue Gabe plant, margaritas made from tequila, lime juice and orange liqueur, and Mexican beer like Modela, dos Equis and Corona. Personally, I recommend Dos Equis Amber for a great Cinco de Mayo cerveza. If you're looking for a great margarita, the official Matt Friends Drink the Universe margarita recipe is two ounces of high-quality Blanco Tequila we prefer Terra Mana One ounce of Triple Sec, one ounce of French lime juice. Shake up and pour over ice. Don't forget to rim that glass with salt and garnish with two wheels of lime. And if you find yourself at the bar on Cinco de Mayo with an empty glass, just say uno mas, por favor. Thanks for listening and happy Cinco de Mayo.
