What can student teachers do to make a positive start with a new class?
Feb 19, 2024

Today's episode of 'Beyond Survival: The New Teacher podcast' is the monthly episode with Colin McGill. Colin is my colleague in the PGDE at Edinburgh Napier University, and is the programme leader. You can follow him on Twitter @colinmcgill.

This episode will be most useful for those who are in their first year of learning to be a teacher, and those who mentor student-teachers. It answers the central question: what can student teachers do to make a positive start with a new class?

In answering that central question we also explore:

What are some of the challenges a student teacher faces in taking over a class at this time of year?

What can a student-teacher do in preparation before the first few lessons?

What will help with securing positive behaviour?

Scenario one: the class really love their class teacher and resent a student-teacher taking over. What can the new teacher do?

Scenario two: the class are totally disengaged with the subject. What can the new teacher do?

You can read more about the PGDE programmes on offer at Edinburgh Napier University here: https://www.napier.ac.uk/courses/study-areas/teaching.

You can also contact Colin and I directly: c.mcgill3@napier.ac.uk and j.thom@napier.ac.uk.
