Impactful Authenticity

Curiosity is the superpower! Building networks, the evolution of careers and being constructively difficult

Lucy Rowell Season 3 Episode 1

This week I share an insightful conversation I had with Michael Ostland. Michael has led large statistics functions, he’s also led large matrix teams driving the R&D and commercial side of a number of drugs and now is the Head of development in Europe for Denali therapeutics.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with Michael for many years and watching the interesting and diverse career he’s had. I was extremely curious to know more about Michaels motivations and how authenticity had played into some of the big decisions he’s made so I was over the moon when he agreed to come on the show.

What you’ll hear about:

  • Authenticity changes as you grow and as experiences shape you
  • The importance of finding places that can accelerate your growth and learning
  • Keeping options open, exploring, keep learning about yourself, and evolve
  • The evolution of work
  • Curiosity - understanding who you work with to be effective
  • Going beyond the baseline of curiosity to really understand the why about others and their functions/teams
  • Broaden experience in your early career
  • The need for good functional management is still needed
  • Choosing the right next career step for you
  • That’s different …. What do you choose to do next?
  • Business culture differences between the US and Switzerland
  • Building a support network
  • Being constructively difficult
