GOING ROGUE Podcast with Angie Manson

Angie Manson with Eric Fisher - Beyond Coping to Transforming Trauma

Angie Manson Season 2 Episode 58

In this powerful episode of Going Rogue, host Angie Manson sits down with Eric Fisher, an experienced addiction counselor and martial arts enthusiast who has dedicated his life to helping others find strength and resilience in recovery. Eric brings a unique perspective to addiction treatment, drawing on his martial arts background to illustrate how recovery can be approached as a “fight” that requires skill, practice, and inner mastery.

Eric shares his unconventional journey from Tennessee to Canada and how a series of life-changing moments brought him into the world of addiction counseling. With over a decade in the field, he has worked across a range of settings, from outpatient facilities to private practice and community programs, bringing a wealth of knowledge about the evolving landscape of addiction treatment.

Together, Angie and Eric dive into:

  • The role of trauma as the unseen root of addiction and the importance of addressing both mind and body in recovery.
  • Techniques like Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) that are changing the way trauma is processed, helping individuals reframe their pasts and release long-held pain.
  • The challenge of balancing holistic approaches and traditional medical treatments, including the delicate navigation of mental health medications in the recovery journey.
  • Eric’s new book, The Martial Art of Recovery, which combines martial arts philosophy with therapeutic concepts to give readers tools to conquer addiction and achieve mental wellness.

As they unpack these topics, Eric provides practical insights, humorous anecdotes about adapting to Canadian winters, and thought-provoking advice on how to support family members through recovery without enabling old patterns.

Thank you for tuning into this episode of Going Rogue.
