Geeking Out on Self-help with Dr. Christine Whelan (Part 2)
May 30, 2023 Season 2 Episode 5
Jean Brown & Dr. Glenn Patrick Doyle

In Part 1 of our interview with Dr. Christine Whalen, self-help researcher and SEEK Safely’s newest Board member, we discussed her background in researching self-help, how she got connected with SEEK Safely, and a bit about what she’s learned about how to be a best-selling self-help author.

In Part 2, we really get into what’s going on with self-help today. This packed conversation covers:

  • the new social-media fuelled trajectory for becoming a self-help guru
  • what we’re currently seeing in the gender-izing of self-help
  • the stickiness of the Law of Attraction
  • the role self-help plays in the lives of young people
  • why the term “self-help” guru doesn’t even capture what’s really happening with the industry

You’ll see why we are so excited to have Dr. Whalen with us!

If you missed Part 1, find it here.

Quoted in this episode:

“To say ‘I love you’ one must first know how to say the ‘I.’ The meaning of the ‘I’ is an independent, self-sufficient entity that does not exist for the sake of any other person. A person who exists only for the sake of his loved one is not an independent entity, but a spiritual parasite. The love of a parasite is worth nothing.” - Ayn Rand
