How to Talk About Politics and Religion with Lisa Saruga
Jan 23, 2024 Episode 64
Kristi Lowe

Do you struggle to talk about faith and politics with loved ones? Have political divides caused problems in your family? You’re not alone. Last week, the political conversation began with my wonderful guest, Kaitlyn Schiess. This week the conversation continues with Lisa Saruga.

Lisa is an author, Licensed Professional Counselor, Legal and Ethical Specialist, and a Survivor of a violent crime. We discuss approaching political conversations in a way that’s not divisive. We also cover a lot of hot button issues including abortion, illegal immigration, and racism.

You’ll Learn:

  • [06:37] We're showing our kids how to treat each other. As a believer, we have a responsibility to do it in a way that honors and glorifies God.
  • [08:54] Lisa works with trauma survivors focusing on sexual trauma. She's also working with the legislature and even writing some bills to help prosecute violent assaults and help survivors.
  • [12:13] A lot of people go into politics because they want to make a positive difference.
  • [14:44] Lisa talks about meeting Christians that are on both sides of the aisle.
  • [17:24] A lot of divides have been highlighted after COVID.
  • [21:21] Lisa shares how she strives to be neutral with family and friends.
  • [23:27] Lisa puts her Christianity before her politics.
  • [25:53] Putting love above everything else is the best approach.
  • [32:55] Instead of attacking, ask people why they feel a certain way. Be willing to listen.
  • [35:46] We discuss the division between prolife and prochoice and how to look at things with a different perspective.
  • [46:55] Lisa shares a personal perspective from having a biracial grandchild.
