Speaker 1:

You are listening to the Grow Your Local Business podcast, where local marketing expert and life coach Leslie Pressnell shares the strategies and the mindset to help you reach more people in your city and bring in a steady stream of clients. All right, let's dive in.

Speaker 2:

Hello, welcome to episode 37. Today we're going to talk about your lurkers and how to love your lurkers and show up for your lurkers and stay in belief of your lurkers, because I think this can be one of the most powerful things that you do as you're marketing your business is thinking about your lurkers, because this is going to keep you showing up and creating value on social media and it's going to keep you making offers, even when you can't always see the proof that it's working. It's going to keep you in action, no matter what. It's going to get you out of needing that instant gratification that I know we all want. When we're marketing our local business and when we're posting on social media, we want to post and immediately get likes and comments and DMs and clients reaching out to us. But I'm going to share a different way to think today, and that is about your lurkers.

Speaker 2:

What is a lurker? These are the people that are out there watching you and reading everything that you're putting out there, but they never say anything. They lurk without ever engaging with any of your posts, but they love what you do. They're so interested in what you do. They are right there on the fence of working with you and they're just watching. Maybe they're even saving the money or talking to their spouses doing whatever they need to do to work with you when that time is right for them. They may even be your biggest fan in talking about your business to their friends and you don't even know they exist because they fly under the radar. You don't even know they're there. They're a follower and they may be on your email list, but your lurkers watch and don't actively engage. And the best part about your lurkers is they buy and become your client when you least expect it. I love when my clients tell me that people just came from nowhere, that someone just reached out, called or bought and they had no idea that that person even existed. Then they tell me that that new person told them that they'd been following them for a while. Because here's what usually happens as business owners, we tend to focus on the people that we can see, the people who are engaging with our posts, who are commenting and liking and sending us DMs. These are the people that our brain tends to latch onto and really focus on, because we can put a face to them. There's nothing wrong with that and I think that's very normal, but it's so good to remind ourselves that there are people out there who love everything about your local business and who are about to work with you or buy with you, and you don't even have any idea who they are or where they're coming from. I really, if I think about me as a buyer, i really consider myself a lurker.

Speaker 2:

If I think of how I consume on social media and the people that I end up investing in and working with, i'm not really the person who's always out there commenting or DMing and asking a lot of questions. When I decide to make a purchase or desire to hire someone, it's like I come out of nowhere. I'm not on that person's radar. I think about the coach who I just joined her program. She had no idea who I was when I joined. I just signed up. I don't comment on her post. I don't interact with her in her DMs. I don't engage or post on her Facebook group. I'm very quiet, but I am obsessed with everything she posts. I read everything and she would never know. So when she opened up the doors to her new mastermind, she had no idea that I had been waiting for months and that I was already in.

Speaker 2:

And I think about. Even with other local business owners that I work with and hire or buy from in my city. Most of them have no idea that I'm watching them and that I'm a huge fan of them and what they do, and that I'm waiting until the right time, that I need what they have and that I'm all in that I'm a huge fan already. So this is my favorite thing to remind myself of when I get stuck or in a rut or thinking no one's paying attention or it's not working, no one cares. So I wanted to share this with you today that our clients come from nowhere. It's almost like they come out of thin air when we least expect it and really when we aren't forcing it.

Speaker 2:

And I say that because I see a lot of people get attached to the people who are engaging with them on social media or who are emailing them or DMing them and asking them questions. They get attached to that person becoming their next client or becoming the next person who buys from them. And they'll even say things to me like well, i've been talking to this person and they've been asking a lot of questions, so I think they're about to buy, and so they get attached. And when they get attached, their energy completely shifts. They get really graspy and convincing and really hyper focused on that one person.

Speaker 2:

And then, when that person doesn't buy or they take too long, they get really down on themselves, thinking they did something wrong. They said something wrong, their price was too high, they should change their offer, they should lower their price. They get all in their head and wanna start changing stuff in their business. It's this vicious cycle. All because they focused on that one person that they could see, but they forgot that there were other people who are ready right now to their lurkers, the people who want what they have and who are right there on the fence already paying attention. And if they were the business owner, were to just keep showing up and keep posting, keep talking about how they can help them, then they would eventually buy. But they get so hyper focused on that one person and it's like their brain tells them that that's the last client that's ever coming. It's this all or nothing.

Speaker 2:

But this is when you need to remind yourself that other people are paying attention. People are always paying attention. So when you need this reminder, pull out your phone and look at your insights on Instagram or look at your story views. I bet majority of the people who see your post don't actually engage, and that can be okay, even in a world where we chase high engagement. There are real humans who are following you and looking at your content. Even if they aren't clicking like or comment or they're not messaging you, they watch what you do and they are genuinely interested. So don't beat yourself up over low engagement or the fact that they didn't lift their finger on that post or they didn't lift their thumb and click the like button or they didn't DM you to book. Yet They're looking at your content. They want to be in your world, they want what you have. So I just love to think that they're coming and it's all working and then just keep showing up for them.

Speaker 2:

All these invisible lurkers keep showing up for them without expecting that instant gratification, because the most magical part about lurkers is they're gonna buy when you least expect it, when you get out of the attachment. If you can keep reminding yourself of your lurkers and these followers, these people paying attention to you, who aren't always engaging or even buying yet, it keeps you in belief that they're coming. They might not be ready today, they might not be ready tomorrow or the next day or next week, but they are coming either way. They're there, they're paying attention. This reminds me to believe, even when I can't always see the physical evidence that it's working, and that, my friends, is everything. It's believing that you're going to create the results you want in your business before you even have any proof of that.

Speaker 2:

So many of us want the proof. We want that external validation of the likes, the comments, the testimonials, the clients, the money. We want all of that to know and believe that it's working so we can keep going. But it's actually us committing to believing that it's working that creates those things And it's us staying in belief and staying in action even when we're not seeing the likes and the comments and the engagement and the testimonials and the clients and the money. It's you believing in what you're creating, even before there's proof or evidence to believe. Those are the business owners who make it, the ones that keep going, the people who keep going even when they aren't seeing the instant gratification of results. The people who can think beyond what their current results are and trust that what they're doing is working and that people are paying attention And that if you just keep going and you keep putting in the effort and you keep showing up, you will get the results you want, little by little, and then bigger and bigger.

Speaker 2:

But it's your belief that comes first, and this is why I think it's so good to remind yourself of the lurkers. The people who are there are invisible people. They're like our invisible results that haven't happened yet, but we know they're there and we know they're coming. We just have to keep believing that they're there and keep showing up for them.
