Tom Anderson (0s)
And that's how we provide value to you, dear listeners.
Tom Anderson (8s)
Hello and welcome back. It is a fresh episode of Basic AF. Tom Anderson and Jeff Battersby are here again in the New Year First Show of 2024. Jeff, how are you?
Jeff Battersby (18s)
I'm well, Tom, how are you?
Jeff Battersby (19s)
We just got about a foot of snow.
Tom Anderson (22s)
Better you than me, my friend.
Jeff Battersby (24s)
Yeah, 'cause all I'm doing right now by recording this podcast is procrastinating blowing snow in my front yard.
Tom Anderson (32s)
Yeah, we were early, like about a week ago, they were saying maybe that for us, but we ended up with just a few inches and it's a mix of sleet and snow and it's mostly starting to melt away.
Tom Anderson (45s)
I think we're in the mid forties today, so it shouldn't hang around too long.
Jeff Battersby (48s)
There's probably a joke in there about a few inches though.
Tom Anderson (49s)
Well, we won't start off on that foot.
Jeff Battersby (51s)
Happy New Year!
Tom Anderson (54s)
Exactly.
Tom Anderson (56s)
And indeed, happy new year, everyone, and I hope the holidays were good for you.
Tom Anderson (1m)
And we got lots of new--
Tom Anderson (1m 2s)
Here's the talk about today, Jeff.
Jeff Battersby (1m 3s)
Oh my gosh, yeah, things a-hoppin'.
Tom Anderson (1m 6s)
You would think with the holiday season it'd slow down, but it didn't really.
Jeff Battersby (1m 6s)
Things a-hoppin'.
Jeff Battersby (1m 9s)
No, no, we're swinging the doors open on 2024.
Jeff Battersby (1m 14s)
So we are right here now.
Jeff Battersby (1m 18s)
So we should just jump into it.
Jeff Battersby (1m 21s)
After reminding everyone that you can subscribe,
Jeff Battersby (1m 26s)
like, follow us.
Jeff Battersby (1m 27s)
We'd really appreciate it if you do that.
Jeff Battersby (1m 29s)
We do have actually a reasonable number of followers now,
Jeff Battersby (1m 33s)
which is good news, and we'd like more.
Jeff Battersby (1m 36s)
You can talk to us at feedback@basicafshow.com.
Jeff Battersby (1m 41s)
Our website is basicafshow.com,
Jeff Battersby (1m 47s)
which, you know, if you have people that you don't know what platform they're on,
Jeff Battersby (1m 50s)
that's a great place to send them to choose their platform of choice to be able to subscribe to us.
Tom Anderson (1m 56s)
Yeah, it's one click from there to pretty much all the big ones.
Jeff Battersby (1m 59s)
Yeah, and then you've got a newsletter, Tom,
Jeff Battersby (2m 1s)
at TomFAnderson.com.
Tom Anderson (2m 1s)
I do.
Jeff Battersby (2m 3s)
And I'll see you next time.
Tom Anderson (2m 6s)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (2m 6s)
Saw a nice bump in subscribers to that over the holidays.
Tom Anderson (2m 9s)
And it was, so that was nice.
Tom Anderson (2m 10s)
Thank you, everybody.
Tom Anderson (2m 12s)
They must see what that Anderson has going on.
Tom Anderson (2m 19s)
Good for them.
Tom Anderson (2m 23s)
Well, we got a bunch of it, so we'll start with Apple vision pro,
Apple Vision Pro Soon?
Tom Anderson (2m 26s)
which is coming this year, but it looks like it's coming sooner than later.
Tom Anderson (2m 31s)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (2m 32s)
News this morning.
Tom Anderson (2m 32s)
So right before we started to record, looked around, which is Sunday,
Jeff Battersby (2m 33s)
which is Sunday by the way.
Tom Anderson (2m 37s)
January 7th, a nine to five Mac reporting on Bloomberg.
Tom Anderson (2m 41s)
This is like the layers of reporting here, but, um, in his latest edition of power on newsletter, that's Bloomberg's Mark Germans newsletter, which is way bigger than Tommy Anderson's newsletter.
Jeff Battersby (2m 51s)
Mm-hmm.
Jeff Battersby (2m 52s)
What do you think?
Tom Anderson (2m 53s)
But that's okay.
Tom Anderson (2m 54s)
Um, the.
Tom Anderson (2m 56s)
Uh, it looks like that is coming up very soon.
Tom Anderson (2m 59s)
He reports that they are being shipped to distribution centers, retail staff,
Tom Anderson (3m 4s)
or going out to California for training.
Tom Anderson (3m 7s)
And maybe even an announcement this week, I think CES is this week.
Tom Anderson (3m 10s)
So they might try to steal a little of that thunder.
Tom Anderson (3m 13s)
And, uh, yeah, it looks like it's coming up probably, uh, early February sometime.
Jeff Battersby (3m 17s)
Nice, I might have to take a trip over to the Danbury Apple Store to have a look.
Tom Anderson (3m 23s)
Yeah, you should do that. I think we're still planning to order one at work, but you know it could be October before it shows up
Jeff Battersby (3m 29s)
Yeah, so next October. Yeah, five. Yeah, so what you're saying is the next show we record, you're not gonna have goggles on looking at me pretending I'm here. Yeah, that probably do me a great big favor. All right. Yeah, me too.
Tom Anderson (3m 31s)
Who knows who knows how many of these they've made but probably
Tom Anderson (3m 42s)
Hmm I mean I could put goggles on but it wouldn't be that well hey [laughs]
Jeff Battersby (3m 54s)
I should wear goggles or a mask.
Tom Anderson (3m 56s)
That's why we're not a video show, by the way.
Jeff Battersby (3m 57s)
Ah, definitely.
Jeff Battersby (3m 59s)
True, definitely true.
Jeff Battersby (4m 1s)
Alright, so yeah, so we're looking maybe sometime in the next month, meaning January.
Tom Anderson (4m 6s)
Next month, in the next month, I should say,
Tom Anderson (4m 8s)
not next month, but...
Jeff Battersby (4m 13s)
Possibly some big announce, maybe the end.
Tom Anderson (4m 14s)
Yeah, within the next 30 days or so.
Jeff Battersby (4m 16s)
What did they say, the 27th I think was the possible big announce date.
Tom Anderson (4m 20s)
Yeah, I think I saw that somewhere, yeah.
Jeff Battersby (4m 22s)
Yeah, so you know, by the time we record, not our next show, but the third show of the year,
Jeff Battersby (4m 29s)
have some decent information.
Tom Anderson (4m 30s)
Yeah, it'll be nice to see the people when they get there is to actually like what real people think of it. Like average people, right? And I say average people with a lot of money to spend, but
Jeff Battersby (4m 37s)
Yeah, people driving down the street with goggles on
Jeff Battersby (4m 42s)
Well, right, which is not me by the way
Jeff Battersby (4m 46s)
Excellent. Excellent So yeah, so that's a that's gonna be interesting, you know I'm not in the market, but I definitely am interested to see what it's like and kind of play around with it So that'll that'll be kind of fun
Jeff Battersby (4m 57s)
something to look at
Jeff Battersby (5m)
again, I Find it more and more and I knew this was coming for me that I'm becoming an analog man
Jeff Battersby (5m 7s)
you know, so next thing is I am as I said before I'm in Jeffrey Dahmer's basement, but I
Jeff Battersby (5m 13s)
Might be moving to Ted Kaczynski's cabin. I don't know. So we'll see
Tom Anderson (5m 16s)
Hey, New York, wow, 24 is off to a start.
Jeff Battersby (5m 19s)
Dark I know
Jeff Battersby (5m 24s)
We're on our way
Jeff Battersby (5m 26s)
Yeah, so and a couple other bits of news
Jeff Battersby (5m 30s)
So I think before we recorded last
Apple Watch Ban Update
Jeff Battersby (5m 34s)
Apple got banned from selling their two current
Jeff Battersby (5m 37s)
versions of Apple Watches, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 and the Series 9, largely because they were in a patent infringement dispute with a company called Massimo, I think that's how you pronounce it, who filed a lawsuit with the US International Trade Commission, because Apple had apparently infringed on Massimo's patents for blood oxygen sensors in the Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2.
Jeff Battersby (6m 7s)
As of this very moment, when we're recording now, there is a temporary,
Jeff Battersby (6m 15s)
they've gotten a temporary pass, Apple has, on that so they can, you can still buy, as of this recording, you can still buy a Series 9 and Ultra 2.
Jeff Battersby (6m 29s)
And Apple, I think, is trying to do something so that they'd be able to do that.
Jeff Battersby (6m 33s)
By the way, this, I believe, was a US-only ban on watches.
Tom Anderson (6m 36s)
Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (6m 37s)
So, you know, if you want one, run out and get one now, who knows, you, you may not be able to, you may not be able to buy a watch for a while if Apple doesn't straight this out, which I'm sure they will, you know, why infringe on a patent when you have billions of dollars that you can drop on a company to resolve that patent issue?
Jeff Battersby (7m)
It doesn't seem, it doesn't seem right.
Jeff Battersby (7m 4s)
Apple note has submitted a software update.
Jeff Battersby (7m 7s)
Uh, that supposedly, um, we'll, uh, clear the way for them to be able to,
Jeff Battersby (7m 17s)
to actually sell the watch, you know, Apple's not going to leave that much money on the table.
Tom Anderson (7m 19s)
right? And Massimo says it's not a software problem, it's hardware problem. So a couple of days. Yeah, so we'll find out I think part of that too, is they had they hired away a couple of
Jeff Battersby (7m 21s)
So, uh, well we'll find out.
Jeff Battersby (7m 26s)
So January 12th, which is, uh, well coming up.
Jeff Battersby (7m 32s)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (7m 38s)
employees, and it might be more than a couple of days. So I'll say they hired some employees from the company to come work on that product. And so that raised some flags there. And I'm a little surprised it got to this point.
Tom Anderson (7m 49s)
But I guess Apple was pretty convinced they'd done enough to get around it or that they would be able to write a fat check and the company was like, "The check's not fat enough."
Jeff Battersby (7m 52s)
Well, yeah, right. So it goes. Yeah, so we'll see. We shall see. Should be, uh, we're recording now on what day is today? 7th? 8th? 7th, yeah. Recording on the 7th. Don't mind me. I'm still in the, uh, in the holiday time warp. Um, so by Friday of this week, so after we record
Tom Anderson (7m 57s)
But like you said, they'll figure something out.
Tom Anderson (8m 8s)
Seventh, yep.
Tom Anderson (8m 11s)
Holiday mode.
Jeff Battersby (8m 22s)
some kind of announcement, uh, I think so. Friday is January 12th and, uh, we shall see.
Jeff Battersby (8m 28s)
Um, we'll see what happens. Kind of strange, uh, kind of odd, as you said, that Apple hasn't kind of taken care of this ahead of time, but you know, they can fly an airplane over,
Jeff Battersby (8m 39s)
uh, Massimo's buildings and drop big bags of money and I'm sure it'll be fine. I'm fine.
Tom Anderson (8m 43s)
Yeah, they could do that for me too, I'd be okay with it.
Jeff Battersby (8m 46s)
That plane could accidentally drop something in my backyard.
Tom Anderson (8m 49s)
You got a soft landing there in the snow, come on.
Jeff Battersby (8m 52s)
Ooh, right. It's perfect. Set for it. I'll, I'll, I was going to say, I was going to paint a target, but I was going to say something else that begins with P and sounds like the letter that I just sent. Um, but happy new year, Tom. The jokes are a coming. I'm trying to head towards Howard Stern land. Yes. Right. All right. What else is up?
Tom Anderson (8m 56s)
Oh no, no.
Tom Anderson (9m 14s)
Lord, okay, so, Microsoft has released a couple of new applications for iOS and iPad OS and you can run the iPad app on the Mac if you want to.
Microsoft Copilot Apps
Tom Anderson (9m 27s)
They've released a co-pilot app, which is their AI app.
Tom Anderson (9m 33s)
Of course, they've branded their AI stuff co-pilot, so that kind of runs across a lot of their properties.
Tom Anderson (9m 39s)
So that's an Azure or Entra ID thing.
Tom Anderson (9m 43s)
I think they call it now, it's not Azure anymore.
Tom Anderson (9m 47s)
And it's already started to show up in some of the Office applications and everything.
Tom Anderson (9m 51s)
And so they've had Bing.
Jeff Battersby (9m 54s)
showed up on a keyboard.
Tom Anderson (9m 56s)
Yeah, we'll talk about that too here in a second,
Tom Anderson (9m 59s)
which I thought was interesting.
Tom Anderson (10m 1s)
And so they've had it in the Edge browser where you could just pull it up in a little side pane.
Tom Anderson (10m 7s)
And if you were looking at an article or something,
Tom Anderson (10m 8s)
you could say, give me the takeaways from this page Or it pretty much.
Tom Anderson (10m 13s)
anything you wanted to do it could write it's generative there as well as you could give it a prompt and it would spit out some stuff for you and so they've kind of also put it into this application and what is interesting with it is you can use it for free and get access to GPT-4 which with open AI's chat GPT that's a paid service.
Jeff Battersby (10m 34s)
Hmm
Jeff Battersby (10m 39s)
Yeah, how much does that cost that's a little bit of money
Tom Anderson (10m 39s)
Uh, 20 bucks a month.
Tom Anderson (10m 41s)
Yeah, so that's...
Tom Anderson (10m 43s)
Yeah, um, they're, you know, they're not, it's not a one-to-one, like you get some more things with the GPT Plus, uh, subscription, like you get the bots, you can train up your own chat or GPT bots, I should say, uh, for, for specific things.
Tom Anderson (10m 57s)
And I've been playing around with that in particular related to this podcast.
Tom Anderson (11m 2s)
And I think, uh, probably in a month or so, we're going to talk about that, um, a little bit just to show how we're using that, which by the way, if you've noticed, uh, we've started to drop custom artwork in.
Tom Anderson (11m 13s)
for the episodes. I think started with the Superus Solterra show we did with your brother Greg.
Jeff Battersby (11m 18s)
Mm-hmm.
Tom Anderson (11m 19s)
And those are AI generated. If you've paid attention, you've certainly noticed that they're a little weird. Yes, sorry. And Ben. But part of that is it ties into the show,
Tom Anderson (11m 32s)
you know, being a tech show mostly. But, you know, spruces up the thing in the podcast players a little bit too. But one of the things that we wanted to do with that is kind of see how that
Tom Anderson (11m 43s)
progresses over the next couple of years. Because right now there are parts of them that are pretty good. And then you get weird stuff. Like, here's to say we're not Jeff. But yeah, so they are kind of goofy. And I think part of that just comes down to two, I'm still working on like prompting and things for that. I haven't really gotten that figured out just yet.
Jeff Battersby (11m 49s)
Yeah, like stuff that made us look like we were lovers, as opposed to podcast partners.
Jeff Battersby (11m 58s)
Well, right.
Jeff Battersby (12m)
Anything goes.
Tom Anderson (12m 13s)
But you do have that with Copilot. Access to the DALI service is there as well. So you get GPT-4, you get DALI. You don't get so much of the chat histories, like with ChatGPT and GPT+. You can go back through your timeline there and kind of pick up where you left off with stuff. But it looks pretty nice. I've used it a little bit, like I used it to kind to gather the bullet points for the new stuff we're talking about.
Jeff Battersby (12m 36s)
Yeah, and have you used it?
Tom Anderson (12m 43s)
Today.
Jeff Battersby (12m 44s)
Yes, I noticed that.
Tom Anderson (12m 45s)
Uh, yes.
Tom Anderson (12m 46s)
And, uh, probably saved me 20 minutes.
Jeff Battersby (12m 50s)
Yeah, that's well and for a moment I thought that I was a real slacker because there was all this detail in our show notes.
Tom Anderson (12m 50s)
Right.
Tom Anderson (12m 56s)
It's like, man,
Jeff Battersby (12m 57s)
That's not usually there and it's like crap.
Jeff Battersby (12m 59s)
I got to keep myself a little get myself a little more in the game here.
Tom Anderson (13m 2s)
Tom's really into it in the new year.
Jeff Battersby (13m 3s)
You know, yeah, a couple of interesting things about it.
Jeff Battersby (13m 9s)
And you know that I'm not using this stuff.
Jeff Battersby (13m 11s)
Although I might pull up the Edge browser and see if I can.
Jeff Battersby (13m 15s)
You know, have a little fun with it from from that direction.
Jeff Battersby (13m 17s)
But one of the things that I will note in this that's it feels different than chat.
Jeff Battersby (13m 24s)
GPT does is that it is actually citing where it's getting the information.
Jeff Battersby (13m 31s)
So you are getting when you're when you're putting in that, you know, whatever you're.
Jeff Battersby (13m 37s)
However, you formed your particular query for a thing, which I think in most cases is, you know,
Jeff Battersby (13m 42s)
would give me the key points from this particular article.
Jeff Battersby (13m 44s)
I think that's, that's what you've been doing. Is that fair?
Tom Anderson (13m 47s)
I did it for this, yeah, on the GPT plus stuff that I've been doing it.
Jeff Battersby (13m 48s)
Yeah. Yeah. For this.
Tom Anderson (13m 51s)
It's a bit more than that, but we'll, we'll say that, but yeah, that was very,
Jeff Battersby (13m 53s)
Yeah. Yeah. And you're using that for work, but for this particular,
Jeff Battersby (13m 56s)
for our show notes at this point in time.
Tom Anderson (13m 58s)
a very simple, give me three key takeaways from this article or page.
Jeff Battersby (14m 2s)
Yeah. And, and, and I will say it's pretty clean, you know, it's, it's,
Jeff Battersby (14m 5s)
it's coming out pretty well, but it is also not only citing the article that we,
Jeff Battersby (14m 9s)
you know, that you put in, um, but it's also citing other articles.
Jeff Battersby (14m 14s)
That might be relevant. Is that correct? Am I, am I reading that correctly? Yeah.
Tom Anderson (14m 15s)
Yes, and then it links out to those.
Jeff Battersby (14m 18s)
So, um, pretty, pretty slick as far as that's concerned. Uh,
Jeff Battersby (14m 23s)
again, it remains to be seen. Um,
Jeff Battersby (14m 28s)
if, if anybody, uh, has been paying attention,
Jeff Battersby (14m 31s)
this doesn't always work out extraordinarily well, even the citations. Um,
Jeff Battersby (14m 36s)
if anybody was paying attention to, uh, the former presidents,
Jeff Battersby (14m 40s)
former attorneys, court filings recently, there was--
Jeff Battersby (14m 44s)
there were some court filings that they did, I believe,
Jeff Battersby (14m 48s)
with chat GPT that was referring to cases as case law that didn't exist.
Jeff Battersby (14m 56s)
They were frigging made up, made up cases that sounded really nice, but didn't bode well for Mr. Cohen in court.
Jeff Battersby (15m 5s)
So again, this is still a work in progress.
Jeff Battersby (15m 12s)
Probably not one that I'm gonna ever.
Jeff Battersby (15m 14s)
Find myself being a fan of being very, very straightforward here.
Jeff Battersby (15m 21s)
I know you use it a ton time.
Jeff Battersby (15m 22s)
I still don't and have no plans to other than to have an understanding how the technology works and, you know, use it to maybe get plans to build my Kaczynski cabin because that's where we're headed.
Jeff Battersby (15m 35s)
That's how I feel about this stuff.
Jeff Battersby (15m 37s)
But you really do need to.
Jeff Battersby (15m 40s)
And this is talking to all the little boys and girls writing term papers.
Jeff Battersby (15m 44s)
You need to make sure that the information is correct.
Jeff Battersby (15m 47s)
Otherwise, you end up with court filings that are full of garbage and potentially, you know, get your little booty thrown in jail for referring to things that you shouldn't be referring to.
Jeff Battersby (16m 2s)
So not so certain that we're getting solid information all the time in this.
Jeff Battersby (16m 8s)
But this is at least one way for you to be able to refer back to it, the fact that it's giving you.
Jeff Battersby (16m 14s)
It is very early days.
Tom Anderson (16m 14s)
Yeah, yeah, and it's all it's still very early days. I mean, we're so just 14-15 months since chat GPT was released. I think 2022. Yeah. So, yep. And, and, you know, there's still a lot to shake out and figure out. Obviously, Microsoft's, they're, they're pushing, pushing with it.
Jeff Battersby (16m 27s)
Yeah, right. Yep. It's been a year of it though. You know, it's, it's, it's been
Jeff Battersby (16m 38s)
Oh, clearly.
Jeff Battersby (16m 40s)
Well, and the fact that they're giving you access to chat GP tour for for free
Tom Anderson (16m 45s)
Right, mm-hm, and they're big.
Jeff Battersby (16m 45s)
basically is, you know, that's that's kind of significant.
Jeff Battersby (16m 48s)
So that means they're footing the bill there.
Tom Anderson (16m 51s)
They're partnered up with OpenAI a lot.
Jeff Battersby (16m 54s)
Uh-huh.
Tom Anderson (16m 54s)
Like they were when the CEO of OpenAI got fired there six weeks ago or whenever that was, that bit, and got rehired.
Jeff Battersby (17m)
And rehired seven weeks, five, five weeks ago.
Tom Anderson (17m 3s)
Yeah, man, that was wild.
Jeff Battersby (17m 4s)
Yeah, yeah.
Tom Anderson (17m 5s)
[LAUGH] So but yeah, they're big partners and investors and all that kind of stuff.
Tom Anderson (17m 10s)
But, and they're going so far as to add a new key to the windows.
Tom Anderson (17m 14s)
A keyboard, first one in 30 years, Jeff, a Copilot key.
Jeff Battersby (17m 16s)
Wow. Yeah. Yes. Which, by the way, I got to laugh at this kind of stuff. But that copilot key, when you, when you look at it, Apple, Microsoft refers to it as copilot key kicks off the copilot experience, which reminds me of that show that used to be on. I don't know what was it. I can't remember. But there was a show called the girlfriend experience.
Jeff Battersby (17m 45s)
So it was a--
Jeff Battersby (17m 46s)
a glorified way of saying prostitution in that particular case.
Jeff Battersby (17m 52s)
I know, we're going off the rails, Tom.
Jeff Battersby (17m 54s)
I apologize.
Jeff Battersby (17m 54s)
But it's just funny to me that we're having a co-pilot experience.
Tom Anderson (17m 58s)
Yes, but what's the copilot in Windows experience?
Jeff Battersby (17m 58s)
So this is a thing that you get to experience.
Jeff Battersby (18m 1s)
I don't know.
Jeff Battersby (18m 4s)
Right, co-piloted Windows experience.
Tom Anderson (18m 5s)
So that ratchets it up a bit.
Tom Anderson (18m 8s)
Right, so I can't wait to see what Apple comes up with with their goofy name too.
Jeff Battersby (18m 8s)
So yeah, and there is more news on that end, too, right?
Tom Anderson (18m 11s)
But, um, there is, yeah, so the rumors are out there that WWDC this year, Apple's going to finally show something with Siri with generative AI.
Generative AI for Siri?
Tom Anderson (18m 28s)
Um, God knows it needs all the help it can get.
Tom Anderson (18m 32s)
Um, I don't know.
Jeff Battersby (18m 33s)
What? What are you talking about, son?
Tom Anderson (18m 36s)
We we've beat Siri to death on this show and it's only been around, not quite a year yet, but, um, they, uh, so they're looking, so Microsoft obviously is going to push this through the OS, um, in different places and everything.
Tom Anderson (18m 49s)
Apple's probably going to do something very similar.
Tom Anderson (18m 52s)
Um, now it will be interesting to see some of the philosophical differences maybe, I don't know if I...
Tom Anderson (18m 58s)
versus cloud it's only your data it's this it's that whatever but we'll see how that stuff goes but yeah it looks like that might be coming a funny story the other day I was related to Siri I was in the car the other day and friend of mine sent me a message and so I you know you Siri to send one back to him and he sent one back and it read it and it said so-and-so says el mayo
Tom Anderson (19m 28s)
I was like what the hell is el mayo but it was of course it's lmao and I'm like it's 2024 and you still can't do that so I almost feel like they've totally stopped working on Siri at all for the last few years and have been so focused on this so if this doesn't come out at WWDC I think man what are they doing but el mayo I thought that was pretty funny Bye.
Jeff Battersby (19m 54s)
If it was like sometime in May and...
Jeff Battersby (19m 57s)
it was Cinco de Mayo, maybe, but El Mayo is in the refrigerato.
Tom Anderson (19m 58s)
Yeah, yeah, so yeah, so maybe that's show title.
Jeff Battersby (20m 5s)
Okay.
Jeff Battersby (20m 7s)
Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (20m 7s)
And let me, let me just say here, you know, we do bad mouth Siri, but
Jeff Battersby (20m 12s)
you haven't tried Hey BMW yet.
Jeff Battersby (20m 14s)
So, 12 times to get it to turn up the seat heater.
Tom Anderson (20m 16s)
Well
Jeff Battersby (20m 20s)
That's, you know, by that time I might as well take my eyes off the road and
Jeff Battersby (20m 25s)
Press the buttons on this.
Jeff Battersby (20m 27s)
screen in the rear end. Somebody.
Tom Anderson (20m 28s)
Yeah, that's why I like my physical buttons, but, um, yeah.
Jeff Battersby (20m 31s)
Yeah, something to be said for physical buttons. The the touchscreen universe is nice. There are definitely reasons for it. Yeah, I still haven't sent you a picture.
Tom Anderson (20m 39s)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (20m 39s)
And it looks, it looks sweet, but it's a little clumsy.
Tom Anderson (20m 43s)
Yeah, that's all right.
Tom Anderson (20m 44s)
Um, all right.
Tom Anderson (20m 47s)
So we've talked Microsoft, Apple.
Tom Anderson (20m 51s)
I bought something this week, Jeff.
Jeff Battersby (20m 52s)
What?
Tom Anderson (20m 53s)
Starting off 2024 already with silly purchases.
Jeff Battersby (20m 54s)
Spending money. How much did you spend? Let's start with that number
Clicks Creator Keyboard
Tom Anderson (20m 56s)
Yes.
Tom Anderson (20m 58s)
With shipping and everything.
Tom Anderson (20m 59s)
It looks like 150.
Jeff Battersby (21m 1s)
Okay, $150 and what did you get for your $150 Tom and have you gotten it yet?
Tom Anderson (21m 8s)
No, it won't show up until February.
Jeff Battersby (21m 10s)
February everything's in February
Tom Anderson (21m 11s)
So I was, there's, you know, some PR stuff this week for the clicks keyboard for iPhone.
Jeff Battersby (21m 18s)
Mmm, yeah I saw some of that.
Tom Anderson (21m 20s)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (21m 21s)
And, uh, this thing is so silly.
Jeff Battersby (21m 26s)
Mhm. Right. Right.
Tom Anderson (21m 28s)
Might be good.
Tom Anderson (21m 30s)
Um, so what it is, it is a case, although they don't really call it a case.
Tom Anderson (21m 36s)
They call it the clicks creator keyboard for iPhone.
Tom Anderson (21m 40s)
Um, and so you drop your iPhone in this little case and at the bottom of it,
Tom Anderson (21m 45s)
some of you old school people will know what I'm talking about when I just get to this next part.
Jeff Battersby (21m 47s)
How old, Tom?
Tom Anderson (21m 48s)
There is a, well, probably if you've, if you use stuff like tech and phones and stuff in the early 2000s, pre-2007 in particular.
Jeff Battersby (21m 59s)
Mm-hmm. Yes. Yes.
Tom Anderson (21m 59s)
You'll know what I'm talking about.
Tom Anderson (22m)
The BlackBerry keyboard.
Tom Anderson (22m 3s)
People back then that loved BlackBerrys loved the keyboard.
Tom Anderson (22m 7s)
Now there were other, we'll call them early smartphones that had those types of keyboards too.
Tom Anderson (22m 13s)
So this is one of those types of keyboards
Tom Anderson (22m 17s)
for the iPhone that's attached to a case.
Tom Anderson (22m 20s)
Looks like it extends the length of the phone.
Jeff Battersby (22m 26s)
Probably by two inches.
Tom Anderson (22m 26s)
Good bit, like inch and a half.
Jeff Battersby (22m 28s)
Yeah, it should have two inches.
Tom Anderson (22m 28s)
I'm like, yeah, and they have a nice 14 day return policy.
Tom Anderson (22m 34s)
So I'll preface everything with this.
Jeff Battersby (22m 35s)
Fourteen.
Tom Anderson (22m 36s)
14, wonder where they got that idea.
Tom Anderson (22m 37s)
Sounds like Apple's.
Tom Anderson (22m 39s)
And it's funny, when I saw the thing,
Tom Anderson (22m 41s)
they were like, Mr. Mobile says such and such.
Tom Anderson (22m 43s)
So I thought this was a YouTuber that they just paid to promote this thing.
Tom Anderson (22m 47s)
But it turns out he's actually one of the inventors.
Tom Anderson (22m 49s)
And I wasn't sure who that was.
Tom Anderson (22m 51s)
And I think it's Michael Fisher.
Tom Anderson (22m 54s)
But he's got a huge YouTube page,
Tom Anderson (22m 56s)
like a million plus subscribers.
Jeff Battersby (22m 58s)
Yeah, yeah, he's good, too.
Tom Anderson (22m 58s)
It's all about mobile stuff, yeah.
Tom Anderson (23m)
And so they've got him, they've got Crackberry Kevin,
Jeff Battersby (23m)
Yeah.
Jeff Battersby (23m 1s)
Yeah.
Tom Anderson (23m 4s)
who was the huge BlackBerry proponent back in the day.
Tom Anderson (23m 8s)
And they've got a couple other designers,
Tom Anderson (23m 11s)
I think one maybe left over from BlackBerry.
Tom Anderson (23m 13s)
There's an ex-Apple guy that's in there on it.
Tom Anderson (23m 16s)
And so part of it was, it's so crazy.
Tom Anderson (23m 20s)
But I just liked that they were that passionate about it,
Tom Anderson (23m 25s)
that they decided to put some skin in the game
Tom Anderson (23m 28s)
to make it, and I asked you the other day if you'd checked out the video for it,
Tom Anderson (23m 32s)
and I think you did yesterday.
Jeff Battersby (23m 33s)
I did, yeah.
Tom Anderson (23m 34s)
It was pretty impressive, like the level of thought that they've put into it and some of the details and everything they've gone through.
Tom Anderson (23m 41s)
Like it's got keyboard shortcuts,
Tom Anderson (23m 42s)
it's got a dictation button on the keyboard.
Tom Anderson (23m 45s)
And I thought it was interesting the way that they're positioning this thing.
Tom Anderson (23m 49s)
And you know, it's right there in the name.
Tom Anderson (23m 50s)
It's the Klix Creator Keyboard for iPhone.
Tom Anderson (23m 53s)
And one of the things that they're kind of pushing this for
Tom Anderson (23m 58s)
is not the creator types that do live streams and things like that from their phone,
Tom Anderson (24m 2s)
but want to interact and chat with folks.
Tom Anderson (24m 4s)
Because the virtual keyboard is going to take up half the screen.
Tom Anderson (24m 7s)
And with this, you can see more,
Tom Anderson (24m 9s)
because a lot of times with TikTok and things and Instagram Live and all that,
Tom Anderson (24m 13s)
the chats kind of scroll up from the bottom and the more you can see, the better.
Tom Anderson (24m 17s)
So it's interesting.
Tom Anderson (24m 18s)
I have no clue what I'm going to think of this thing.
Jeff Battersby (24m 22s)
Yeah, I'm interested to hear. I'm, I'm the first thing to me that comes out,
Jeff Battersby (24m 26s)
and this was mentioned in that video and that the video was great. Um, I, it really,
Jeff Battersby (24m 31s)
it really was intriguing. Um, but one of the things that I'm really curious about is the weight factor, not, you know, the, the balance between the actual keyboard itself and the, uh,
Jeff Battersby (24m 45s)
the phone hanging up there. Um, you're using a 14 pro, not a 14 pro max I've got now.
Jeff Battersby (24m 52s)
15 pro max, um, which, you know, is pretty hefty. Um, and I did note in the, uh, in the video that they've, they've done some counterbalancing there's weight actually in the, in the bottom keyboard part, but that would be my first concern is that it's, um, that it is a little top heavy.
Jeff Battersby (25m 16s)
So I'll be interested in particularly with the pro max. I can't speak to the pro might be fine
Jeff Battersby (25m 22s)
but I'll be interested to see how it works out with, uh, with, uh, the pro max. And I am definitely interested to hear what, what your thoughts are on, on the way to the thing.
Jeff Battersby (25m 33s)
Um, it, it looks cool. You ordered the yellow one, correct? Or as they refer to it as bumblebee,
Tom Anderson (25m 37s)
I did.
Tom Anderson (25m 39s)
Mm-hmm.
Jeff Battersby (25m 40s)
which kind of a shout out to transformers, right? That's a little, uh, a little transformery, uh,
Jeff Battersby (25m 47s)
in joke, maybe. Um, and I do like that color. The other one that.
Jeff Battersby (25m 52s)
They have now is a London fog, which is a gray, which I also like because,
Jeff Battersby (25m 56s)
you know, it is a walking depressive. That's my, uh, you know,
Jeff Battersby (26m 1s)
that's my go-to color. Um, so it, it's, uh,
Jeff Battersby (26m 6s)
it is, um, I did that yellow is really slick. It looks great. Um,
Jeff Battersby (26m 12s)
did you have a BlackBerry? You did see, I never had a BlackBerry.
Tom Anderson (26m 14s)
I did. I did. Yeah, that was back in my AOL days. They, it was, you know, corporate issued phone.
Jeff Battersby (26m 17s)
I always had the, uh,
Jeff Battersby (26m 23s)
Nice, look at you, so this might.
Tom Anderson (26m 24s)
Yeah, and keyboard was good. So it was, it was a great little email machine for the time,
Tom Anderson (26m 31s)
but the rest of it wasn't very good. Like the browsing and all that was pretty sucky.
Jeff Battersby (26m 35s)
Yeah. So it'll be interesting to see. I, I, you know, it's,
Jeff Battersby (26m 40s)
they've done a lot of smart stuff with it and, uh, we'll have a link in the show notes to the video that Tom is referring to.
Jeff Battersby (26m 50s)
Um, it, it's definitely Addy, you know, it's definitely a, uh,
Jeff Battersby (26m 55s)
a promo video, not a review video,
Jeff Battersby (26m 58s)
even though near the end of it, uh, Mr. Mobile does, uh, purport to,
Jeff Battersby (27m 3s)
you know, say some things that he's not so sure.
Jeff Battersby (27m 5s)
Sure about one of the other big things about it is it's it is Tom said it's going to add another inch and a half two inches to the length of your phone, which interestingly enough the you know, they're they're selling that as a benefit.
Jeff Battersby (27m 21s)
You know, you put it in your back pocket and everybody can see the keyboard.
Jeff Battersby (27m 25s)
I can never figure out why people put the glass side of their phone on the backside of the pocket, you know, so it's facing out.
Jeff Battersby (27m 35s)
I would never do that because I want my soft, but to cushion any possible falls could crack my screen and I don't put the thing in my back pocket anyway.
Jeff Battersby (27m 47s)
So it's a it'll be interesting to see.
Jeff Battersby (27m 49s)
I'm really curious what your thoughts are.
Jeff Battersby (27m 51s)
I was tempted to buy one myself, but the reality is I would buy one and it would sit on my desk.
Tom Anderson (27m 57s)
Yeah, so when it comes in, I'm going to put it on the phone and I'm going to keep it there for I've got 14 days to if I want to return it.
Jeff Battersby (28m 1s)
14 days.
Tom Anderson (28m 5s)
So I think I'll put it there because he even mentioned in the video, he's like, if you're just going to try it for five or 10 minutes, don't bother.
Jeff Battersby (28m 13s)
Right.
Tom Anderson (28m 13s)
He's like, you've got to put it on, go through the adaptive period and see where it ends up.
Tom Anderson (28m 18s)
So I'll put it on and and stick with it.
Tom Anderson (28m 21s)
I'll take the ridicule of my coworkers as I walk around the office with it.
Tom Anderson (28m 27s)
Initial thought is that it's because it's just going to be different, is that those keys and the way I have to hold in everything is going to make my hands hurt.
Tom Anderson (28m 39s)
But we'll see.
Jeff Battersby (28m 40s)
Yeah, fair, fair. And let me ask you another question. This is
Jeff Battersby (28m 46s)
a curiosity question. Because in fairness, I, I never do this.
Jeff Battersby (28m 54s)
But how often do you use your current phone in two handed mode to type messages? I never do. I'm a one hander and a left at that. So, you know, it's that...
Tom Anderson (28m 59s)
Pretty much all the time.
Jeff Battersby (29m 10s)
That would be, you know, it's funny, I should maybe try using my phone two-handed. I probably have fewer typos than I currently do. I don't know. Typos, including, you know, with the autocorrect stuff that seems to say things that I never had in my head. But it's... I am definitely a one-hander and a left-hander when it comes to that. So that's another...
Jeff Battersby (29m 35s)
That would be another big lift for me, it would be the change from...
Tom Anderson (29m 39s)
Right. Now, do you do the swipe on the keyboard or you peck out the letters?
Jeff Battersby (29m 40s)
from one to...
Jeff Battersby (29m 46s)
You gave me that trick for the Apple Watch as well, to be able to do it,
Jeff Battersby (29m 52s)
using that teeny tiny little keyboard on the Apple Watch.
Jeff Battersby (29m 55s)
And in fairness, my brain just doesn't work that way, it's weird.
Jeff Battersby (30m)
I have a hard time doing the little swipey things to get to the letters.
Jeff Battersby (30m 3s)
I have to think about where the keys are.
Tom Anderson (30m 5s)
Yeah, definitely when you first start, it's like, "Uh, I don't know where to swipe."
Jeff Battersby (30m 5s)
So it doesn't...
Jeff Battersby (30m 10s)
Yeah. Yeah, exactly. And on the watch particularly.
Jeff Battersby (30m 14s)
So no, I don't do that. Do you use the swipey thing?
Tom Anderson (30m 17s)
On the random and few instances where I do type something with just my right hand, I'll typically at that point go to the swipe.
Jeff Battersby (30m 24s)
Mm-hmm
Jeff Battersby (30m 27s)
Yeah, gotcha so
Tom Anderson (30m 28s)
But if I'm doing my normal stuff, it's two thumbs I'm using.
Jeff Battersby (30m 33s)
I was gonna say you're all thumbs Tom, but that's a I
Tom Anderson (30m 36s)
I did turn off the predictive text because I'm convinced that's where 50% of my typos and errors are coming from.
Jeff Battersby (30m 38s)
Did too yep turn that off and I'm gonna turn it off on
Jeff Battersby (30m 43s)
Screw-ups came from yeah
Tom Anderson (30m 44s)
Yeah, that thing annoys the hell out of me.
Jeff Battersby (30m 46s)
Yeah, and I haven't yet, but I'm gonna turn it off on my back - it's uh
Jeff Battersby (30m 51s)
Yeah, no, thank you
Jeff Battersby (30m 54s)
Tom We've burned another hour. Well, no, we haven't we've burned a half an hour

Jeff. And that's how we provide value to you, dear listeners. Condensed. Yes, sir. Yes.
Jeff Battersby (31m 1s)
It felt like an hour Tom
Close
Jeff Battersby (31m 4s)
There's an hour's worth of information in the 30 minutes that we've just spent talking. So

Good to see you in this new year. And just a reminder that our show artwork, not our individual episode artwork, is by Randall Martin Design. Please forgive us, all creatives out there. But we can't afford to do show artwork other than the way that we're currently doing it. But the killer...
Tom Anderson (31m 43s)
Right, and this I don't feel particularly bad about right because we had those discussions like is it going to take work away from people because I would never pay somebody to do artwork for every single episode.
Jeff Battersby (31m 52s)
Nope, agree, agree, until we get super rich doing this and then we might, you know, we might do something like that.
Tom Anderson (31m 52s)
So anyhow.
Tom Anderson (31m 58s)
Well the clock's ticking.
Jeff Battersby (31m 59s)
Right.
Jeff Battersby (32m)
Well, right.
Jeff Battersby (32m 1s)
I guess we're, you know, on our way to being Joe Rogan and making billions of dollars.
