Speaker 1:

Hi there and welcome to Proverbs 31 Wannabe, where we discuss biblical womanhood and our constantly busy and sometimes crazy daily life. I'm Alexis Heaslip and, as a wife and mom of two, I am always striving and praying to be a Proverbs 31 woman of faith. Hi guys, you know sorry for that little break I had. I know I took a couple weeks off, but between getting ready for Easter and just really trying to be present with my kids during this time of telling them the story of Jesus's ultimate sacrifice, I felt like I just needed to take a little pause. But I am back now. My kids me discipling my kids will always come first, and then my son was off for his Easter break. So between those two things I just felt like I needed a little break. But now that I'm back, I am so excited we are going to be finishing our Connecting the Dots series today. Today is our last episode of this series. Can you believe it? We're at 16 episodes of Connecting the Dots between Old and New Testament and today we are going to be talking about how our King, jesus, is a king who was pierced. So let's dive on in y'all. We have a lot to talk about.

Speaker 1:

So, through all of the things we've talked about in the last 16 weeks, and it's culminating to this fact that Jesus, our Messiah, is King, and this is a theme that we see throughout all of scriptures. For example, Psalm 2, verse 6 tells us this I have set up my King upon Zion, my holy mountain, and again in the book of Psalms, psalm 72. I want us to read this psalm together and I like how the title of this psalm in the Tree of Life version is called A Powerful King for the Poor. This psalm tells us of Solomon Give the king your judgments, o God, and your righteousness to the king's son. May he judge your people with righteousness and your poor ones with justice. Let the mountains bring shalom to the people and the hills righteousness. May he vindicate the poor of the people, save the children of the needy and crush the oppressor. Let's pause there for just a second. So, our King Messiah. These first five verses give a description of what type of king he is going to be.

Speaker 1:

In the Old Testament, we are told that this king, messiah, king, is not one that's an oppressor, not one that is vengeful, not one that is evil, but this is the king who defends the poor, which is like the complete antithesis of what we typically think of when we think of a king um, and I think that's really important, because a lot of people have this false narrative that the old testament god and I'm using quotation marks there is different from the quote-unquote New Testament God, and that's just not true. God is God throughout scripture and he's consistent, and I feel like there's a lot of misunderstanding about that. A lot of people try to say that the way that God is described in the Old Testament is vindictive I've heard that word. I've also heard that he can be tyrannical, that people describe God as violent, and that is just not the case. Our God is a God who loves justice, but he's also a God of mercy. But you know what? A lot of the people who try to say these things about who God is in the Old Testament don't even actually take the time to read it, and that's why this is so important for us as Christians, to be in the Word of God and not just the New Testament. The Bible is a whole book and not two separate books. It's all connected, and that's why I've been just saying how important it is that we should be connected in the entirety of the word and be connecting these dots throughout scripture, because it's a whole book.

Speaker 1:

So let's continue on with verse six. May he be like rain falling on a mown field, like showers watering the ground. Let the righteous flourish in his days. Let shalom abound till the moon is no more. May he have dominion from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth. Let desert dwellers bow before him and may his enemies lick the dust. May the kings of Tarshish and the islands bring tribute. The king of Sheba and Saba offer gifts. So let all kings bow down before him and all nations serve him.

Speaker 1:

As we've talked about in the past couple of episodes, our Messiah King, as described in Psalm 72, is going to be a king of all the earth and all nations. Every tribe, every king will come to worship him, for he rescues the needy crying for help, also the poor and the ones with no helper. He will take pity on the poor and needy, and the souls of the needy he will save. And I'm just going to stop here. There's a couple of verses left in Psalm 72, but this is the point is that he is here for the needy, he is here for the poor, he is here for those crying out. And just to skip to the last two verses, in verse 18, we're told that the whole point of Messiah King being here is for this. Blessed be Adonai Elohim, god of Israel, who alone does wonders. Blessed be his glorious name forever. May all the earth be filled with his glory. Amen and amen. So the whole point of this king who was going to reign is that the glory of Adonai be on earth. And we hear this beautifully echoed in two prophets Zechariah 14, verse 9, we read this about our king. Let me find it. Adonai will then be king over all the earth, and that day Adonai will be Ahad and his name will be Ahad. His name will be one one, and this is reinforced in the book of daniel.

Speaker 1:

Now, what's interesting is, um, depending on your um, depending on your translation of the bible, the book of daniel might not be placed with the other prophets. Um, some some books of the bible or not. Some books, some translations of the bible, put daniel like the tree of life version. Uh, put daniel in writing in the writings section, um, which I think is really interesting, and they don't put them. He's not put with the other prophets, but he's in a separate category called the writings. So just so you know, if you're looking at different translations, the order might be a little different. So, daniel 7, in verses 13 and 14, this is one of the prophecies that daniel hears um, I was watching in the night visions, behold one like a son of man coming with the clouds of heaven.

Speaker 1:

He approached the ancient of days and was brought into his presence. Dominion, glory and sovereignty were given to him that all peoples, all nations and languages should serve him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will never pass away, and his kingdom is one that will not be destroyed again. The emphasis on jesus's uh, or messiahs, because they didn't know his name. Is Jesus at this point? Eternal kingship, this idea of eternal kingship, and there's a lot of New Testament scriptures that show that our Messiah is king. Let's go through them, because it's really important for us to see all these connections. That's the whole point of this series that we've been doing together.

Speaker 1:

So flip with me to John 18, and this is during Jesus's trial, and he's before Pilate, and Pilate is interrogating Jesus because he wants to know the truth. So listen to this and, starting in verse 33, so Pilate went back into the praetorium called for Yeshua Jesus and asked him are you the king of the Jews? Are you saying this on your own? Yeshua answered or did others tell you about me? Pilate answered I'm not a Jew, am I your own nation? And ruling priest Kohanim handed you over to me. What have you done? Yeshua answered my kingdom is not of this world. My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, then my servants would be fighting so that I wouldn't be handed over to the Judean leaders. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here. So Pilate said to him Are you a king? Then Yeshua answered you say that I am a king. For this reason I was born and for this reason I came into the world, so that I might testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears my voice. So Jesus makes it very clear and that was his whole message is that the kingdom of God is at hand and he's not just a king of the earth like an average king. He is different and unfortunately, pilate did not understand this. He did not grasp what Jesus was saying. Understand this. He did not grasp what Jesus was saying and that's really sad. He had this opportunity, but he just didn't grasp it.

Speaker 1:

Now Paul gives us a lot of different explanations. He gives us a lot of context, a lot of thoughts on Jesus's kingship. So one of the verses that we need to look at is in Ephesians, chapter 4, verses 4 through 6. And this is talking about the unity of the body of believers. There is one body and one Ruach spirit, just as you were also called in one hope of your calling, one Lord of faith, one faith, one immersion, one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. But to each one of us, grace was given in keeping with the measure of Messiah's gift. Therefore, it says when he went up on high, he led captive, a troop of captives and gave gifts to his people, to his people, and that's showing us that he is the ruler over his people.

Speaker 1:

Again, if you'll turn with me to Philippians, chapter 2, starting at verse 8, we hear more of what Jesus, our King, embodied, his character and how it's different than what we think of kings of this world, what we think of kings of this world, starting at verse 8, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. For this reason, god highly exalted him and gave him the name that is above every name, that the name of Yeshua. Every knee would bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue profess that yeshua, the messiah is lord to the glory of god the father. So jesus is our king, but he's different than other kings because he humbles himself to die for the sake of his people, and that is a clear distinction that we need to remember, that Jesus is not like other earthly kings who are caught up in greed and power and wealth and fame. And now, if you'll turn with me to the book of Hebrews, we get even more of an explanation of who this king is Hebrews 12, and we're going to start at verse 25.

Speaker 1:

And this talks about our king's unshakable kingdom. See to it that you do not refuse the one who is speaking, for if they did not escape when they refused the one who was warning them on earth, much less we escape if we reject the one who warns us from heaven. His voice shook the earth then, but now he has promised saying Yet once more, I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens. Now this phrase yet once more shows the removal of those things that are shaken, that is, created things so that we cannot be shaken, so that what cannot be shaken may remain. So this is showing what Messiah's true power is. He has total control over creation. He's not just the king of people, has total control over creation. He's not just the king of people, he is the king of all creation, and what he commands creation to do, it will do. And in Revelation we see this getting played out, of the authority of the kingship being played out.

Speaker 1:

I have two examples in Revelation and I just want you to know Revelation is not a book that we should look at and be afraid of. I know it's intimidating if you don't have the context, but now we have. We've been on this journey. We have so much more context. We've been connecting the dots and once you start connecting the dots of these themes throughout the Bible of Messiah, you'll realize that Revelation makes so much more sense when you have the whole picture and it's really encouraging. And just to know that it's all spelled out throughout Scripture. It all points to Revelation. So you'll see what I mean. Let's dive in together and we're going to read Revelation 5, 1 through 10.

Speaker 1:

I saw in the right hand of the one seated upon the throne, a scroll written on both the front and back, sealed with seven seals. I also saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice he was worthy to open the scroll and break its seals. No one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it. I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open up the scroll or look in it. Then one of the elders tells me stop weeping. Behold the lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David has triumphed and he is worthy to open up the scroll and its seven seals. And in the midst of the throne and the four living creatures and in the midst of the elders, I saw a lamb standing as having been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. He came and took the scroll from the right hand of the one seated on the throne. When he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the 24 elders fell down before the lamb, each holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the priests, the Kedoshim and they were singing a new song.

Speaker 1:

You see, these verses tie in together everything that we have been talking about how Jesus is the Passover lamb, the spotless victim, the perfect sacrifice. He is our king and he will reign forever and again. In Revelation, if you'll flip ahead to Revelation 11, verses 15 through 19. We read this about the seventh trumpet. Then the seventh angel trumpeted and there was a loud voice in heaven saying this the kingdom of this world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his anointed one, and he will reign forever and ever.

Speaker 1:

And the 24 elders seated on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying we thank you, adonai Elohei Tesvaot, who is and who was, because you have taken your great power and begun to reign. The nations were enraged, but your wrath, wrath, has come and the time for the dead to be judged, to reward your servants, the prophets and the kedoshim and those who fear your name, the small and great, and to destroy the destroyers of the earth. Then the temple of god in heaven was open and the ark of his covenant appeared in his temple and there were flashes of lightning and this beautiful picture of how I love, how it says that we worship you, adonai, who was and who is, and the things that happen during this worship of and of what his kingship will look like, of lightning and rumblings of thunder. It reminds me of Moses on Mount Sinai and the earthquakes and the hail, and it just the imagery it all points back to, imagery that we find all throughout the Old Testament, which is so amazing how, even from Genesis to Revelation, we can see this theme all throughout, and these were written hundreds of years apart by many different authors. I mean all written inspired by God, but different times, different people wrote these words of God down, and yet the theme is still there of Jesus's eternal kingship, and that is beautiful. And that leads me to the second point is that he is our eternal king forever and ever, and Jesus confirms his kingship more than any mortal king could have even comprehended. I love how we're told that not just Israel but all the nations will bow down before him because he is this omnipotent ruler of all. And if that isn't just amazing, we've been talking about this theme really for the last 16 episodes of who Messiah is, where he came from, what God's eternal plan was from the beginning, all the way back in Genesis, all the way back in Genesis, and it is clear that Jesus is the only answer. He is the way, the truth and the life, and no one can come to the Father except through him. He is our eternal King, jesus, ruler of all. And not only is he ruler of all, but I thought this was a really interesting point that this king, eternal king, is to be seen by Israel as pierced. As pierced because he is pierced for our transgressions, something that a regular king would not have been willing to do at all.

Speaker 1:

So we got to look back again, go back to the Old Testament, go back in time and see what these Old Testament writers prophets, what they were told by God about who he is, these small nuggets of revelation that slowly point us to Jesus. So, zachariah, there's a lot in Zachariah. Like I said before, maybe one day I'll do a whole study on Zachariah, that'd be kind of cool. But Zachariah, uh verse, and chapter 12, verse 10. And the title of this section is called mourning the pierced one, and, um, it says this then I will pour out on the house of David and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication when they will look toward me, whom they pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only son and grieve bitterly for him. As one grieves for a firstborn, and this echoes back to the Passover and the Exodus story. Like the Egyptians mourn for the firstborn who was slain because of the plagues and the angel of death, the lamb was pierced and slain and the blood was put on the post of their house so that they could be saved. And instead of mourning the loss of the firstborn, they prayed over the sacrificial lamb. The Israelites and the people who did not believe in him mourned over the loss of their firstborn son, son. And we see again in another, from another prophet, the, in the book of Isaiah.

Speaker 1:

Again, isaiah 53 is such a powerful passage of scripture and if you want to really dive in to what our suffering servant, the things that he did for us, check out my Bible study, our Suffering Servant, a six-week study in Isaiah 53. It just changes everything and I really go in depth into what it means to be pierced. But let's look at verse 7. He was oppressed and he was afflicted. Verse 7 he was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he did not open up his mouth like a lamb, led to the slaughter, like the sheep before its shearers, is silent. So he did not open up his mouth and if you jump down to verse 10, yet it pleased Adonai to bruise him. He caused him to suffer, he caused him to suffer.

Speaker 1:

And what's really just mind-blowing is, you know, we've talked about a lot about this Passover lamb, this Passover lamb. Well, during the Seder meal, when Jews celebrate Passover and, as a Christian, my family and I have started to celebrate Passover yearly when you look at the matzah, the unleavened bread that is used, you can see these little markings in the matzah and it's beautiful because it looks like the matzah has been pierced. And what a symbol. And this is the bread that Jesus used at the Last Supper. That this is. And when Jesus said this is my body, he was looking at the bread that reminded them of the Israelites' time in slavery and said this is my body, which is to be given up for you, and it's already been pierced, like Jesus' body would be pierced during the crucifixion, and we see this echoed in Psalm 22. And we see this echoed in Psalm 22.

Speaker 1:

In Psalm 22, where we get the full story of a crucifixion of Jesus' crucifixion way before crucifixion was even really used as a form of execution. But yet god knew all the details and gave it to us, way before roman rome was ever in existence, way before crucifixion was used as a form of execution. We are given all of these details, psalm 22, 16. My strength is dried up, Verse 16. Hands and my feet they pierced my hands and my feet and, like I said, the New Testament clearly shows that our Lord King, jesus, was pierced and is our ultimate King and he can only be our eternal king. He can only be our king forever because he was pierced as our ultimate Passover lamb. And we see this played out in Luke, if you'll turn with me to the book of Luke, in chapter 34, or not 34, excuse me, 24. I read that wrong and we're going to see how everything comes together. Everything comes together Starting at 36. Starting at 36, how Jesus, after he died and rose. He shows that he was pierced and in his risen state.

Speaker 1:

While they were speaking these things, jesus, yeshua himself, stood in the midst of them and said Shalom, aleichem, peace, be with you. But they were startled and terrified, thinking they were seeing a ghost. He said is myself, touch and see, for a spirit doesn't have flesh and bones, as you see I have. And when he had said it, he showed them his hands and his feet. But when they were still in disbelief due to joy and wonder, he said to them do you have anything to eat here? They gave him a piece of broiled fish and he took it and ate it in their presence. Then he said to them these are my words, which I spoke to you while I was still with you Everything written concerning me in Torah of Moses and of the prophets and of the Psalms must be fulfilled. Then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures and he said to them so it is written that the Messiah is to suffer and to rise from the dead on the third day and that repentance for the removal of sins is to be proclaimed in his name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things and behold, I am sending the promise of my Father upon you, but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with the power from on high. So Jesus himself is saying look, if you just look at the writings and the Torah and the prophets, I have fulfilled those scriptures. Look at my hands, look at my side Touch and see and believe. And again, if you flip back to John, chapter 20, and then John 20, we see this emphasized again In John 19,.

Speaker 1:

31 through 37, we read about this sacrificial death that he went through and how he is pierced like the Paschal Lamb. It was the day of preparation and the next day was a festival for Shabbat. So that the bodies should not remain on the execution stake during Shabbat, the Judean leaders asked Pilate to have the legs broken and have the bodies taken away. So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and then the other who had been executed with Yeshua. Now, when they came to Yeshua and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one of the soldiers pierced his side with a spear and immediately blood and water came out out. These things happened because he who has seen it has testified and his testimony is true. He knows that he is telling the truth so that you may also believe. These things happen so that scripture would be fulfilled Not a bone of his will be broken. And again, another scripture says they all, they'll all look on him whom they have pierced.

Speaker 1:

And then, if you flip to John 20, starting at verse 19,. We hear this it was the evening on that day, the first of the week, when the doors were locked where the disciples were. So this is a sunday evening. For fear of the judean leaders. Yeshua came and stood in their midst this is the evening of messiah's resurrection, sunday. And he said to them shalom aleihem, peace be with you. After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Yeshua said again to them Shalom Aleichem, as the Father has sent me, I also send you. And after he said this, he breathed on them and he said to them Receive the Ruach HaKodesh, the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone's sins, they are forgiven, but but if you hold back, they are held back.

Speaker 1:

One of the 12, thomas, called the twin, was not with them when Yeshua came. The other disciples were saying to him we have seen the Lord. But he replied to them unless I see the nail prints on his hands and put my fingers into the mark of the nails and put my hand into his side, I will never believe. Eight days later, the disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Yeshua comes, despite the locked doors. He stood in their midst and said Shalom Aleichem, peace be with you. Then he said to Thomas put your finger here and look at my hands, reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe. Thomas answered and said to him my Lord and my God, yeshua, said to him because you have seen me, you have believed. Blessed are the ones who have not seen and yet have believed. You see, my friends, even the disciples doubted, and it's okay to doubt, but Jesus wants us to believe. Blessed are those who believe and do not see. And he was pierced for our transgressions. The disciples felt his hands. They knew he was alive and not just a ghost. They felt Messiah's pierced hands and sighed.

Speaker 1:

And in Revelation 1, chapter 7, to conclude this epic saga we've been talking about, we read this Oops, I'm flipping over to it. This is what is said in the final book of the Bible. Look, he is coming in the clouds and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of him. Yes and amen, yes and amen. I love that yes and amen. We have all sinned, we have all pierced him with our sins and our transgressions. But we have the opportunity to worship, to ask for forgiveness and to bow down and profess that we need a savior and believe. And these last and that is what is just so great about our God is that our God is a God of mercy and love and he wants to be our king forever. So what are you waiting for? Have you asked Jesus to be your king? As we close out and reflect on, have we really accepted Jesus into our hearts? Do we want to be one of his subjects? Have we chosen to follow him?

Speaker 1:

Over these past 16 weeks, we've learned so so much about our Messiah and who he is and why he came, but we've really only scratched the surface. As believers, there's always just so much more that we can learn, and that's why it is so important and paramount that we are in the scriptures. Daily, we are praying to our Lord. Daily, we are walking in our faith with our brothers and sisters in Christ in a community where the Bible is lifted up and where we can lift one another up, walk with one another, rebuke when necessary and speak the truth in love. And scripture is just. It's God-breathed and alive, and we need to have this solid understanding of the scriptures in order for us to go out and do and live our life in a way that reflects his will, and we can't teach our children and disciple our children, we can't do Shema, we can't go out into the world and do the Great Commission and show others what it means to be a follower of Jesus and why it's important, if we don't have any understanding ourselves of what that means. So thank you, thank you, thank you for coming on this 16-week journey with me. It's been a joy, it's been a pleasure. I hope this sparks your curiosity even more to do research yourself, to dive into the Word of God, to connect more dots than what we've connected together and to just continue your journey into learning what the will of God is, discovering more and more who Jesus is and living out a life that demonstrates Shema and the Great Commission. Thank you for listening to Proverbs 31, 1 and B. We hope you enjoyed the show. If you do, find us on Facebook, instagram, find us on our website, check us out. We would love to hear from you guys. Give us a follow, give us a like. We just love building up this community of believers and just coming together as an online community so that you can go out into your communities, where you live, to share the message of hope.

Next week we are taking a pivot. We are shifting to a brand new series. I'm really, really excited for this one because we're going to be talking about discipleship to your children through the lens of Psalm 119. It's going to be really exciting. Hopefully some practical tips as well as praying through the scripture together as a community. It's going to be really exciting. There's a lot to learn, as always, and that's what we're going to be starting next week. So until then, this is Alexis Heaslip. I pray you have a great rest of your day. See you guys next week. Talk to y'all later, god bless.
