#113: Deepak Chopra's 3rd Spiritual Law of Success - The Law of Karma

Thor Challgren

Deepak Chopra says everything that is happening at this moment is a result of the choices you've made in the past. A lot of us make choices unconsciously, and therefore, we don't think their choices. And yet they are.

That comes from his hugely best selling book, "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success." In this episode, I'm continuing my seven part series where I look at that book. And today I'm talking about the third of the seven laws, which is the Law of Karma.

All the episodes in the series are here:

Deepak Chopra says that everything that is happening at this moment is a result of the choices you've made in the past. A lot of us make choices unconsciously, and therefore, we don't think their choices. And yet they are.

That comes from his hugely best selling book, "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success." I'm continuing my seven part series where I look at that book. And today I'm talking about the third of the seven laws, which is the Law of Karma.

You may be are familiar with the term of karma. And often we can think of it in a way that sounds like it's almost like payback. Like, you get karma for doing something bad. But Deepak Chopra has a broader definition of karma. And the way he that he describes it is that it's both the action and the consequence of that action. It's cause and effect simultaneously, as he says, because every action you take, has a force of energy to it, and that then responds back to us in kind. So think of it as, like action for like action as you sow, so shall you reap.

One of the key points in this is that we are conscious decision makers, you are constantly choosing, therefore you are constantly receiving the results of the choices you make. And even when you don't think you're consciously choosing when you don't use your mind your thought you are still choosing. So don't think that by not choosing that you aren't going to receive anything, because in fact you are.

He also points out that we have an infinity of choices available to us. He says that in every moment of our existence, we are in that field of all possibilities, where we have access to an infinity of choices. And so everything that happens to us is the result of choices that we've made in the past.

For example, me possibly gaining weight today is a result of diet and exercise choices I've made in the past. me feeling rested, and energetic today is the result of choosing to go to bed early last night. For me having a completed book is the result of choosing to sit down to write every day. Even things that you think might not be choices actually are. Deepak Chopra makes the point that, for instance, if I were to pay you a compliment, you would still make the choice of being pleased or flattered. But it's still a choice. So even small things like that, where you're not conscious of making a choice, you are in fact making that choice.

And he goes on to say that most of us are so conditioned to responding reflexively meaning we don't even think about our response. We don't choose our response. That basically we're triggered all the time by people and circumstances into predictable outcomes of behavior. So we're reflexively choosing without even being aware that we're choosing. And even though that's happening on that subconscious level, where we're not even conscious of it, it still creates cause and effect, which is why you want to be conscious with your choices.

So how do you apply this in your life? Well, first, be conscious of the choices you're making, the present and the moment and realizing you're choosing. So going back to that example of someone paying you a compliment. Be conscious that you are accepting it that you're pleased by it, how you feel about it. If someone says something to you, pause, be present, and realize that you are consciously choosing how to respond to that person. So first part, be conscious.

Second, ask yourself two simple questions. First question is, what are the consequences of this choice, I'm considering making. And he makes the point that you pretty much know what the consequences are. Because if you get if you're in tune with your body, with your heart with your feeling with your gut, you're going to know what the right thing to do is. So first question, what are the consequences of that choice? Second question that you should ask is, will this choice that I'm considering making bring happiness to me or those around me? And if not, then maybe you should look for a different choice. If the answer is yes, then go ahead and make that choice. So that's the second way to apply this has asked those two questions.

The third is Ask your heart for guidance. Be guided to signs and signals that your body gives you when you're thinking about choices. As to make if the choice feels comfortable, move forward. If not, maybe pause and look at the consequences, and then search again for guidance.

In his first law, he talks a lot about the importance of meditation. And this is really where the more that you meditate, the more you will be in tune with your inner guidance, your your inner being your spirit that that motivates and guide you and leads you. And the more that you do that you'll be open to these signals these intuition ideas that come to you. So that's how you can apply the law of karma in your own life.
