Speaker 1:

Lord, you know you listen on the place of word. Radio is the best. Yeah, hey man, this teacher. She was planting seeds just by living her life, and that was cultivating the ground in your heart. You didn't even know it. Right, it was her.

Speaker 2:

Christian character from the Holy Spirit that was coming out of her every day. That is what affected me. How do you like that? The fact that she had an inner character from the Holy Spirit that could not be explained as something of this world? In the moments where she was supposed to be mad at me, she could still have grace and patience.

Speaker 1:

See your name. Your name, your name.

Speaker 3:

Hello and welcome to Plays on Word Radio, where we discuss, analyze, work and play on the Word of God. Thank you for joining us on this excursion. Today let's join Pastor Teddy, also known as Fred David Kenny Jr, the founder of Plays on Word Theater, as he does a deep dive into the Word of God.

Speaker 1:

Thank you very much, katie Kenny and Mr Josh Taylor. Welcome to everybody listening to Plays on Word Radio. We are still rocking steady here, yeah, from our Southern Command in North Carolina. Today we have something special for you. We always have something special for you. You need to know that by now. Right, tell me you know that. Tell me you understand that Every episode is special for you. We aim to serve the body of believers, amen and recruit new believers amen. Today we're going to be visiting with a dear brother, pastor Dan Shunk, from Calvary Chapel, chambersburg in PA, and, yeah, we've been there a bunch of times. Check him out, though. Check it out. Let me introduce Dan Shunk from what was the official name before.

Speaker 2:

Well, we started with Calvary Community, chambersburg. I thought I was smart, so everything could just be DC Chambersburg from the beginning.

Speaker 2:

So when we officially got rolling and affiliated. It would be easy. So it was Well. You've been a blessing for us from the beginning. I mean, when we were just starting off, we were looking for new and unique ways to engage the community and to really fire people up for the Lord, and the Lord put you right in our path at the very beginning. So it was perfect timing and it's so great to know a brother from I was going to say from New Jersey, but that's not true, is it?

Speaker 1:

But yeah, now we're based out of North Carolina right now, but we're still traveling. We were just up in New Jersey. We're heading back out to Wisconsin.

Speaker 2:

Awesome. Got some awesome shows out there. The Lord knows how to connect people at the right time and in the right places. And it seems so random to us, but it's all the master plan to put people together. Yeah, random to us, but it's all the master plan to put people together.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, man, it really is. It's really cool. So, to be fair, before we get into the fellowship, tell me about you. How did you meet Jesus, man? When did you come to meet the Lord, wow?

Speaker 2:

So raised in a really you know the cliff notes, raised in a real, I would say old-fashioned, religious family where we were sent to church, we were sent to Christian schools but never had anything to do with it in the home and there was a real disconnect. And so we were exposed to all of these things growing up but just didn't want anything to do with it. I just saw it all as some weird Sunday thing that looks so different than the rest of the week and so typical rebellion in my teenage years, and didn't see the connection of how this could be applicable to my real life, let alone I didn't want it, didn't see any benefit in it, let alone the fact that nobody talked about Jesus. It was all about well, we go to church and this is what we do at church and here's the routines, and it wasn't anything to do with the fact that there is an awesome Savior that is worthy of knowing. None of that. So that kind of old-fashioned religious, you know, emptiness and long story short. I think in high school was the first time I saw a real example of a Christian that I could look at. It was my high school teacher, mrs Pine, at the Christian school, gail Pine. She's with the Lord today and she would, you know, I would just love to argue with people to the point where she and she she was the only one I knew that could just say you know, god, god loves you even when you act like that, and she could just be as content as pie and walk away. And and man, I couldn't. I couldn't know how, I didn't know how she had that, I didn't know how she could do that and I never met anybody like that and I was like that is different and you know that. Stayed with me for a example that she's different. This is real to her. It follows her everywhere she goes and I went off and did my whole thing in life in my early 20s and was just a real prideful idiot.

Speaker 2:

Just I mean some of the worst pride and anger and just love to cut people down, make people cry and it's a shame to even say these things now. But that was my bent and I just really pursuing hard after a job and career and was doing great at that, until my one district manager at the company I was with had to sit me down one time and say you know, this is in my early twenties. And she says you know, you got a great car, you got a, you got a great fiance, you got money in the bank. You know all this stuff. Why are you always so angry? And you know, when she asked me that I had no answer for her at the time I was just like I don't know, you know, and she said I'm either going to have to fire you or send you to another whole area of stores and and I mean I had come off of, you know, going to award shows and winning trophies and things like this. And I mean this was a meaningful career and really working well.

Speaker 2:

And that was some of the first times I really saw the consequences of pride and pride can lead you in a lot of directions and I saw the consequences of that and I really turned my attention. You know, everybody has a God in their life, right? Everybody. Nobody's an atheist, everybody serves something, everybody's pursuing something hardcore. And so I turned my attention from trying to be this perfect employee to just just everything to do with women and and all of that you know and and I only you know type of things you don't even talk about unless you're just given a testimony of how bad it was. And you know I got involved with a lot of things, you know, went downhill quick in six months and and that led me to me to getting married and moving to Maine.

Speaker 2:

And so, through the course of a two-year marriage, the Lord really, just it was just strike three for me in life of pursuing different gods in life. You know, through high school it was I'm going to be this popular, arrogant kid, and that didn't work. And then try to pursue well, I'm going to be the best employee in this entire planet, and well, that didn't work, you know. And then I turned to just lust and women. And it's not that I found it empty, I found its consequences brutal. And after a two-year failed marriage I'm sitting there alone in Maine and I'm thinking to myself strike three, I'm out, you know, like, what am I doing? And it's interesting, in times like that you can really go back and you remember. Finally, you know all of the things that, well, what is important in life Then, what is real, what matters? And my mind, all those years later at 25 years old, goes back to 10 years before, when I knew Mrs Pine and her gets to me still, you know, and her example, and you know you think of that stuff and that was it.

Speaker 2:

Life changed in August of 2000, at 25 years old, and I just said this is what I need. I need to. It's not about knowing it, it's about this he's worthy. And you know, I know some people get real hung up on what day they were saved or that kind of thing, and I have no idea what day I was saved, but I know that in August of 2000, my life completely started to change and from the beginning of that month to the end of the month, you were meeting a different guy and everything just started changing. Because this is now the pursuit of my life and you know, you know how often the scripture talks about our relationship with Christ as a walk. It's a walk, it's a journey, it's the daily manna, it's the pursuit of God, it's the relationship in the everyday and the constant growth. And that began in August of 2000. I said, lord, this is what am I doing. I know you're right, I need to know you for real. And it all began right there. And so that's how it all began.

Speaker 2:

And you know, I don't want to go so strong as to say I think sometimes we get so hung up on somebody. You know this idea of separating out lordship Christianity from just being saved, and you know there's so many weird conversations there. But I think what people need to remember, though, is that when you have a walk with Christ, there are things happening. There are things happening. You're not the person you used to be. There's a transformation right Romans, chapter 12,. There's a transformation that's happening in your heart, and how could that not affect the outside as well? It's not good enough to say, well, you know, this is who I was in the flesh and that's just. You know, I'm still this angry guy. I just you know, don't act on it anymore.

Speaker 3:

No.

Speaker 2:

I'm being transformed every day and praise the Lord. He doesn't quit on you, he doesn't leave you alone and you're able to keep going and growing. And one of the first people I contacted after I got saved was and I was in Maine at this time, having moved up there for this marriage and one of the first people I called was Mrs Pine and I called her back in Pennsylvania and said hey, something you need to know.

Speaker 2:

Oh, my goodness, I love it and I thought I was doing her a blessing right to call her and let her share in the joy. And, as it turned out, over the next few years, she was the one who set me up with my godly wife and my marriage how do you like that? And she was the instigator to put me together with my wife, joy.

Speaker 3:

Oh, my goodness, and we just had a blessed, godly marriage for 20 years.

Speaker 2:

We just had 20 years, hallelujah, and that was all instigated by Mrs Pine, wife Joy, and just had a blessed, godly marriage for 20 years. We just had 20 years, hallelujah, and that was all instigated by Mrs Pine, oh, my goodness. And so, in a nutshell, I like to tell people that I was born and raised in South Central Pennsylvania, here in Chambersburg, for 25 years, but then I was spiritually born and raised in Maine for the next 20 years before I finally was called to the Lord and moved back here to Chambersburg, pa, five years ago. So we are a prophet seldom being welcome in their own country, here back in our hometown, but the Lord's doing good things and we're excited for the first five years and to see what the Lord's going to do. I mean, if he wants to rapture us out of here right now, are you ready? Because I mean.

Speaker 1:

I can do that Right now, like five minutes ago. I'm ready. I'm ready, let's do this.

Speaker 2:

I mean Lord, we're good. So, whatever you prefer, lord, but we will occupy until he comes right.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, hey man, this teacher. So you're telling me she was planting seeds just by living her life. She wasn't or she was intentionally doing things, but she was basically living her life and that was cultivating the ground in your heart. You didn't even know it.

Speaker 2:

The fact that she had an inner character from the Holy Spirit that could not be explained as something of this world. In the moments where she was supposed to be mad at me, she could still have grace and patience. In the moment she should have been just completely exasperated. She still had love and that was the Holy Spirit. Amen. She demonstrated that to me, that this is what it looks like for a Christian to live their life in the world.

Speaker 1:

Wow, so often I tell people I think I even said it Sunday we're in the book of Acts. On Sunday we just passed chapter seven and eight with Stephen and Philip and I said these guys were normal guys, they didn't go to seminary, they weren't quote, unquote the pastors. Yet they weren't these religious guys, they were just people that lived their lives. They're an example for every one of us because they wanted to serve God. Stephen was waiting tables but yet he dropped the largest sermon in the book of Acts and it impacted Paul, and you know what I mean.

Speaker 1:

So I think people a lot of times they want to. Well, I can't, I can't, I can't, I don't know. I got to bring this guy to meet the pastor, or I got to bring this person to meet the pastor, where, if you just live your life and and share the hope that's within you, you don't have to, you know, you don't have to have gone to seminary or nothing like that Just share the hope of Christ in you and and you can do that in how you react with people and how, like Mrs Pine, she extended grace. That spoke volumes to this angry kid who didn't. It totally fried your circuitry.

Speaker 2:

And you know what, the things you learn in those days, the things that bring you to Christ, are the very things you can now use in other people's lives. You know we read in the parables. You know, just to put it in the Dan English, not the King James that the parable that the Lord's telling them, you know, if you throw a meal for somebody that can throw you a meal back, okay, well, what, thank, have you Like? Okay, big deal. But if you throw a meal for somebody that can't, even pay you back.

Speaker 2:

They're not going to pay you back, but they can't even they don't have the means to pay you back Now. They don't have the means to pay you back Now. That's grace. That's grace and that is what changes lives. Not doing justice, not just kind of being kind, but when you have the opportunity to do something for somebody that they don't deserve and they can't earn, and you do something for them, you're in a business of changing lives by the power of the Holy Spirit. And that's what she did for me. She gave me something I didn't deserve in the way she acted. That changes people.

Speaker 1:

That man, that conversation must have been fantastic. When you called her, did she say ah, I knew it, it's about time, or was she just is?

Speaker 2:

she so happy, or what? Oh no, I think it was quite the opposite. I think it uh more like uh who is this again? Are you sure? Are you sure it was a bit of a shock? Oh, that's great, oh that's great. I was just so tickled that I could uh, that I could do that, that I had the opportunity to call back, you know, to go back and to reach out and just to kind of return that thanks. So.

Speaker 1:

It's a concert and a team operation, because she did her part, but I'm sure somebody was praying for Dan Shunk. Absolutely, I'm sure somebody prayed for you. Also, it's going to be great to go back and read the transcripts or see the DVD. Lord, how did all this happen? Let's see what you were engineering here. But somebody prayed for you. Maybe you don't even know. There's so many people that have ministries of prayer that we have no clue.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and some you get to go back and you get to follow up and you get to say the Lord used you, and some you never had that opportunity. You just mentioned Stephen. I just think how much of an impact did Stephen have on what would be the Apostle Paul? Oh yeah, listening in, being a part of being around, seeing those things. I mean this Stephen, this everyday guy, stephen you just mentioned. You know he gave a sermon so powerful they wouldn't even let him finish.

Speaker 3:

Yeah, you know, and this is just the guy Right, he's just telling what he knows Just the guy filled with the.

Speaker 1:

Spirit, and that's every believer. That's the opportunity filled with the spirit, and that's that's every believer. That that's the opportunity, every believer. You know we have the same spirit. That's the thing, the same spirit that was filling him is is within us and upon us. It's, it's it's not like something we have to read about, that's far away. It's like wait a second. This is, this is accessible to me. Yeah, you know this, this person you know abiding christ, right, john 15, abiding. If we're not in christ.

Speaker 2:

You know walking daily with this person. You know abide in Christ, right. John 15, abide in Christ. If we're not in Christ, walking daily with Christ, filled with the Spirit, longing for more of Him, if we're not doing that, what does it say in John 15? It's not that we're ineffective, it's that we're able to accomplish nothing. You can do nothing. You know one of the interesting things I find in John 15, we know the vine, the branches from John 15, and abide in me and you can bear much fruit. And I've always found it interesting that you go back and you look at Ezekiel 15. You know these Old Testament chapters right. They've got about 742 verses per chapter, right?

Speaker 2:

And then you look at Ezekiel 15, kind of compares to John 15, and it's talking about the vine. And it basically says for these short couple of verses in Ezekiel 15, it says you know, what can the vine do? You can't. You know, it's no good to pin a picture on the wall, it's no good to burn for fuel, it's no good for anything unless it's doing what it's called to do. And that's the same for us, john 15,. We have no other purpose other than abiding in Christ and letting His power flow through us. And I just think I'm really stuck on that that that's something every one of us needs to be praying, that when we go to minister to people every day of our lives because if you're a Christian, we're ministering to people every day of our lives we need to pray that way. Lord, without you I can do nothing and I need your spirit to do this work today. And what an awesome thing that he will.

Speaker 1:

And in the Greek, in John 15, that word nothing means nothing, right. No thing. You can do, no thing. I love it, man.

Speaker 2:

That's uh right, it's like talking about the idols in the old Testament. The old King James says it's a thing of naught. You know it's a nothing.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, amen, so okay, so let's, let's. Uh, you were up in Maine and then you, um, somehow you got connected with a real man's man, the real, a real man's man, who anytime I'm around him I break a rib. Uh, he gives me a hug and I'm fred, hey fred and he breaks like three of my ribs every time he gives me a hug. But I tell you what, just being around this guy, my testosterone levels just go from from normally low testosterone levels to skyrocketing testosterone levels. Man, I could run through a brick wall after being in this guy's presence. So tell us about how you met the, the, the great ken graves man, right? How did that happen?

Speaker 2:

yeah, it's an interesting story actually, so that I I basically you know. I say I was born and raised in pa 25 years, then spiritually born and raised in maine, and that's that's where I found Calvary Chapel, right away, just two, three weeks after being saved, praise God. And my life was really a mess. When I first got saved, I was in trouble with the law for the first and only time in my life. I was going through this divorce. I needed anger management, counseling from this charge with the law, all this stuff.

Speaker 2:

And I'm sitting next to a lady at work who became like my second mom in Maine and Kathy. Her name's Kathy. She's also with the Lord today. And Kathy, she tells me this story later that there was somebody sitting in my seat at the office and when that girl left, kathy starts praying Lord, who are you going to put in that seat next? I need somebody to minister to, I need somebody to help.

Speaker 2:

And there comes me just weeks after I get saved and I know nothing. I don't have a church. All I know is I need Jesus and I sit down and Kathy's like well, you need to come with me to. We're starting this Bible study and you need to come with me and we'll get some things sorted out. And so she's my mom's age, I go with her to this Bible study and this Bible study would become Calvary Chapel in Searsport, maine. And so this is real close to where I live. She takes me to this startup bible study that would become a calvary chapel and, and this bible study starting, it's got nine people nine, I didn't say ninety, nine people.

Speaker 2:

Right, every need of my life was met in that nine person bible study. I I of needed a divorce attorney the guy that would be the pastor. His wife worked for the most prominent attorney in Bangor. I needed this state certified anger management counselor. The guy that was hosting it was such. He was a state certified counselor. I was on probation because of these charges with the law and there was two probation officers for the town and one of the two was at the Bible study and he switched caseloads to take my case and I got a church out of it. So every single need of my life was met in that nine people. And that's the way the Lord began things to say you know what, when you come to me, I got you.

Speaker 1:

I got you. That's absolutely amazing. You can't make that up, man. Yeah, and from there.

Speaker 2:

I mean the first three this is where Ken comes in at Calvary Bangor, the first three years of my life, of my life right, it is my life, my Christianity. The first three years of being born again. I had hated to read in school because it just seemed like why do I want to take all this time to read something that doesn't matter? And so when I get saved, I realized, like this Bible matters, I need to know this. This is finally something worth reading. And so I started going nuts. The first three years of my Christianity, I read the Bible three times a year per year. The first three years I started going, I was at Calvary Chapel, safe Harbor in Searsport, a couple of services a week. I was going to Calvary Bangor a couple services a week. That's my life. I did four or five services every week. I was doing Chuck tapes.

Speaker 1:

You were in it, man, you were in it Right.

Speaker 2:

A lot of you, calvary audience might know Chuck tapes, and I was listening.

Speaker 1:

C2000 and C3000. Oh, you had the cassettes.

Speaker 2:

Yes, I was doing the actual cassette tapes of Chuck all the time. I just couldn't get enough.

Speaker 2:

Oh man, and so that was my introduction to Calvary Bangor. I started doing the Bible college distance learning right there at Bangor, met a bunch of the guys up there and of course a lot of those guys at Calvary Bangor back in those days all went out to become head pastors, senior pastors themselves. There's, I think, boy, all those years ago, in August of 2000, I think, there was maybe four or five Calvaries in Maine and now I think there's about 25, 26. And if I'm not wrong, I think every single one of them came out of Calvary Bangor, I believe it. I had the privilege of meeting a bunch of them guys during those years.

Speaker 1:

You were there at that time.

Speaker 2:

That's amazing man, yep, and so I've always stayed close with Ken. And then another one, will Cass. I can't go without mentioning Will Cass. He was a big part of my spiritual upbringing and stayed close with him over the years. He was at Calvary Chapel down east near Bar Harbor, maine, for decades and just two years ago the Lord called him out to go out to the town that the Ark Encounter is in in Williamstown, kentucky. So he's got an awesome story how the Lord picked him up and moved him out there just two years ago and all of his adult kids moved out there, and the Lord's really doing a great work.

Speaker 1:

I might have to reach out to him, get his story there, man.

Speaker 2:

It's amazing. So I was blessed to get to know some of these awesome leaders like that in the Calvary circles in Maine and so never lost track of Ken and Will and a bunch of those guys as the next 20 years unfolded in Maine.

Speaker 1:

You know what, man, one of the things that your story reminded me of that is just so familiar to me. It was as if I was right there with you, because there's a point that you come to when it's like wait a second, I need this word, man. This is not just words on a paper, that's it. Wait a minute. This is life. This word, man, there's this. There's more. This is not just words on a paper, that's it. This, go wait a minute. This thing, this is a, this is life. Yeah, this is. This, is literal food for my soul. And then you, you, it's like man, especially because the holy spirit is enlightening and showing you and lighting up the the word and giving explanation and helping you understand. You know what is being said and what connects to what. Nothing gets that for me, man. Can I give you one example of that? Give me, give me, give me whatever you got.

Speaker 2:

So look this is. This was so amazing. This is a good example of what it was like being growing in the word in those early years. You know we read the. We read the word and the way I say it today. Even you know when I'm preaching.

Speaker 2:

Sometimes I'll remind people look, what we're trying to do here is, every time we read the word, we want to get the milk, the meat and the manna we need to. We need to make sure we understand all of the concepts that are just right there at the surface level. And that's the milk and and yet you go deep. There's so much more deeper. You can always drive in and get the meat, the deep stuff, and yet don't forget, don't miss that this is not just the knowledge, this is a way of life to apply these principles to our life and to be affected and affect other people with this eternal word of God, and that's the manna that's applying to our hearts every day.

Speaker 2:

And so you know I'm reading the word in these early years and I remember the first time. And now I'm going to be your weirdest person you've been able to have on, because I'm going to tell you my favorite book is Leviticus. It's my favorite book. I remember the first time that I was reading Leviticus 14, and I could tell you about lots of other chapters, but I'm just reading Leviticus 14.

Speaker 2:

It's talking about the cure for leprosy, right, it is an incurable disease and and it's talking about you know, I won't go through the whole thing, I, I let's. Let's just save it for your audience to take a take a peek and find in that re, in that um ritual that they had to do the cleansed leper had to go to the priest and do this ritual, right, and the ritual itself is the resurrection of Jesus Christ in picture. And the first time I saw that I remember going to a friend and I was like look, at this.

Speaker 1:

I'm reading this this is Jesus, this is his resurrection, amen, amen.

Speaker 2:

And you know what they said to me? They said yeah, yeah, yeah, I knew that one and I was like oh, okay, well, hey, that's what it's like when you learn the word yeah, yeah, I, I so much there I, I completely agree with you on that.

Speaker 1:

I remember I was talking with, uh, my buddy bert he's pastor of a church in new jersey and and were this is a long time ago and uh, and I told him I said, yo man, I'm really feeling Leviticus. Man, I'm like, I'm really in it. I'm seeing Christ everywhere, right, I'm seeing Christ his work. I'm seeing you know mill the mildew and sin and and and how, what has to be done, and I'm just like it. And I remember he looked at me like man really, and then he can't, he basically saved to the same conclusion.

Speaker 1:

He's like yo man, leviticus is off the charts difference between clean and unclean oh, yes, yeah all the feasts of israel in there and I try to encourage, uh, people don't believe the hype or the lie about genesis, great, but you get to leviticus, everything grinds to a halt. No, no, no, no, no. You ask the Holy Spirit, show you Christ, because the entire book is A to Z. Is Christ?

Speaker 2:

Amen. Yeah, I think it was Spurgeon. And when you see Christ in it it's like whoa, that's right. I think it was Spurgeon that said that if you can preach a message from any chapter in the scripture and you don't mention the name Jesus, you missed it. You missed it yeah, I agree.

Speaker 1:

I agree with him, man, and it's not like you're reaching or stretching or trying to, you know, make connect dots that are there just for the sake of doing it. No, that's not the case, man jesus told the pharisees he said you guys diligently search the scriptures because you think in them you have eternal life. You don't realize those scriptures that those are talking about me. That's right, those very scriptures John 5, those scriptures that you keep looking at. That's Moses talked about me Moses.

Speaker 2:

Yo man, they were like that's exactly what they're there for. That's the express purpose of why they're put there. Paul says you know, these things are all shadows, but the substance is of Christ.

Speaker 1:

Amen. That's all the time we have for this episode. We're going to continue this next week, you guys. Until then, jehovah bless thee and keep thee. Jehovah, make his face to shine upon thee and be gracious unto thee. Jehovah, lift up his countenance upon thee and give thee Peace.
