Season 2 Ep. 2 - Kelley Bernard
May 26, 2023 Season 2 Episode 2

Guest name: Kelley Bernard

In this episode:

  • Kelley is a Pediatric Oncology Nurse at Boston Children’s Hospital who had her own journey with childhood cancer after being diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in 2007 at age 15.
  • Spent over 170 days in the first year of treatment and experienced numerous side effects and medications throughout.
  • An aware 15 year old’s perspective of the seriousness of your diagnosis and the headspace surrounding that - from coping methods like binge TV and extra sleep, to at times not feeling or looking “like yourself.”
  • Staying on track with school and graduating on-time after completing two years online. Kelley talks about navigating social life as a teenager in a time where social media and One Mission hadn’t existed to connect teenagers who were all going through the same thing.
  • Fast-forward through nursing school(!!) Kelley's first shift back on the floor at Boston Children’s Hospital working as a nurse…this time, with her own journey with cancer in her rear view mirror.

This is a One Mission Podcast.

Cancer can steal a kid’s childhood – we help them get it back through
programs and activities that foster friendship, fun, and positive
distractions from treatment. Whether it’s putting on holiday
celebrations, providing art and music therapy or paying for expensive
hospital parking, we make life brighter for children and their families
from the moment of diagnosis, through treatment and beyond.
