Speaker 1 (00:06):

Y'all. I hear ya. All I gotta say can't get at me because I hear ya. So what, uh, what's that? Man? You hate us. Can get at me? Come on now,

Speaker 2 (00:37):

We back y'all. Ooh, it feel good to be back, baby. Ooh, it feels good to be back. Come on now, bro. What it do dog? Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey. We are back. Hey, we back, man. I'm trying to look. I'm sorry, I apologize. Hey, things, let me know what, we ain't gonna make no com look, no excuses, no excuses, no excuses. But welcome back. Welcome back to the Down South podcast dog. And that's south with the elk going, put no t h own it. Hey man, save man. It's a lot of been happening in, in the world, man. It's a lot been happening in Memphis basketball, man. It's a lot been happening the au basketball. But this episode we going to dedicate to Memphis basketball, bro. It is, it's a scary time to be a Tigers fan. Boy. I'm, man, I'm over here sitting on the edge of my sleep, my seat.

(01:38):

I'm my sleep, my seat. And um, and boy it is. Whew. I don't know, but hey, in pee we trust, Hey, in one sin we trust n peewee trust, man, listen, it is, it is going, it is gonna come down probably to the, to to June, July. That's when we probably gonna start making some noise in June, July, or, uh, I mean at this point, I don't know, just hoping for the best. We need a big man. Um, and we need a, another veteran point guard. We just need another veteran guard. Um, I'm not even tripping over the whole point guard situation. Uh, I think with, with with, with Jaylen Young and, uh, Caleb Mills, uh, will probably the help of, of Mikey Williams. I think we'll be just fine. But let's talk about Jalen young man. Jalen Young. He committed, I think Jalen Young committed about what, about two weeks ago maybe?

(02:39):

Um, he's out of, he's outta ucf. I've watched him a few times. Um, I've seen, I, I mean especially when, when they played, when they played Memphis, uh, when they played Memphis, the man, all I kept saying, I ain't gonna lie, I was like, bro, who is this guy? And that's when they played Ed Memphis. Uh, I'm not talking about in the tournament. I'm talking about when they played, uh, when they played Ed Memphis. Uh, he, he averaged, they got four and a half, I'd say he averaged five points, two rebounds, two assists via gold. Percentage was 37.3. So he shot 37% from the field. Um, and, and let me, let me say this.

(03:25):

I like what I see in the kid. Um, as the season went on, his production, you know, fell down, of course. Um, seeing here where, where, when he was, when he was given the minutes, he did something with his minutes, whether it was a assists, rebounding, um, and also even, even shooting Fritos, shooting from the field steals like the, the kid look like he got something to him. I just feel like he just wasn't given as much of the opportunity. Like I'm, I'm perfectly fine with, like, I'm looking at games where his menace were up. Like, let's look, we can look at the Florida State game. That's when he scored 17. Um, we can look at U N C A. They didn't play, they didn't have a good game. The team didn't play good that game. He shot 60% from the field. Come on, man.

(04:23):

What, what, what we talking about, bro? What we, what we talking about, bro? Um, like I said, I'm, I'm cool. I'm, I actually, I ain't gonna say I'm cool. I actually like this pickup. And uh, I, I always talk about this. I talk about ball guards. You know, I co I coach aau. I see, I go around the, the grassroots, um, during the summer E Y B L, peace Jam, uh, hoop scene, they about everything. You know what I'm saying? And, and it is, it's just, it's it's, it's a different aspect of basketball when you looking at the grassroots. So a lot of coaches are starting to go, oh, and, and with, with Jaylen Young coming in and you, everybody's saying, oh, he only averaged four points a game, two rebounds, two assist. Look, I'm looking at when, when he, when he was given minutes, he showed up, whether it was at the Frito line, um, three point line.

(05:24):

And when I seen him play in person at Memphis, he showed up to me. He showed up at Memphis. He, when they played here, he had 10 points. One still one block, one assist, two rebounds. I'm cool with that. He was giving 20 minutes off the bench. If I'm not mistaken. I don't think, I don't think Darius Johnson was back then. I think, yeah, I don't think Darius Johnson had, I think j yeah, I think j Darius Johnson back looking at the stats, Darius Johnson was back. So he had to, he had to take, really, he took the backseat, man. Darius Johnson started. So I mean that's what, that's where majority of his minutes were taken from, from when Darius Johnson was hurt to, when Darius Johnson came back and let me say this, Darius Johnson had a hell of a game. 12 points, 8, 6, 6 rebounds.

(06:21):

I'm cool with that. You know what I'm saying? Your backup point guard gave you 10 points, one assist, two rebounds, two for three from the tray, three for four from the field like he played within the offense. And that's what you want, man, when you're in the transfer reporter. You can't keep just looking for these dynamic players or these Kendrick Davis's and, and Deandre Williams, bro, we gotta understand, we were, we were blessed as a fan base to get both of those kids. We were blessed as the fan, as a fan base to get Jalen Doen, Lester Kes, Iani Bates, Landis Na Deandre Williams on one team. Now, I don't think y'all understand that, like, that, that doesn't happen a lot. Most with the transfer portal, kids are getting in and up outta here. And we've had some talented teams, even though we thought the team this past recent, uh, this year that just ended, we thought this team wasn't going to be as talented.

(07:21):

But as we see, as we can see, if Penny can get some older guys in there, he can coach 'em up and they will listen to him. The plan will work cool with this, with this pickup. I, I want to see him go out here and prove the critics wrong. I know a lot of people, um, in the, in the media is, well, I'm not gonna even say the media. It's this weird fan base we have here as Memphis Tigers. Like, we're just so privileged and we supposed to get all five stars and this, this and that. Um, but most of these guys don't even know nothing about ball guards. They don't know about guards who are left-handed and shifty and crafty, left-hand guards. Like, I ain't saying I'm just no guru, but I've been around basketball my entire life from, from playing high school at an elite level national schedule, playing college ball, um, even having close friends go pro from the NBA to overseas, still have close friends go over, they're still overseas, man, talking ball with them every day.

(08:28):

And if you know me being who my family is, like, like we, we talk ball, man. You know what I'm saying? So I've, I've been, I've been around basketball a lot, bro. And, and, and looking at this Jalen, this Jalen young kid, man, like I said, I like him a lot. Um, and I've even expressed that on Twitter. Like, like, bro, this is going to be a great pickup. When it all said and done, like, just wait and see. Like he's six two point guard left hand, can shoot, can see the floor plays defense. Like, man, just, just wait, man. Like I said, it's, it's going, it's gonna be great. It's gonna be great. And, um, I don't wanna, I don't wanna stay on the subject on Jalen Young too much. Uh, but like I said, I'm, I'm, I, I'm proud of that pickup. I like that pickup.

(09:15):

Now I think it's time to focus on big Men. It's not that many big men in the portal, man. It's, it is, it is just not that many big men in the portal. I think Time is running out. Um, I think who's living there? I know we got Moose Sisk left in there. Um, I don't know. Hey, I don't, y'all don't want to hear my take on that one, <laugh>, but hey, if, if he give him another chance, I guess it's okay. Hey, this ain't, this won't be the first time or the second. So, um, it's, that's cool. That's cool. Like, I think right now at the, at the point, I think it's a kid he's from, uh, the New York Renaissance, I think his name p a p a, I don't, I'm not even sure his first name. I don't have it up on my phone, but, um, he decommitted from somewhere and I think he's like a four star.

(10:05):

I think he's like 6, 8, 6 9. Uh, he looks to be like a physical type of kid. Um, probably can play some five, probably majority played a four. Cuz I think he can, he can stretch the floor a little bit. They think he had an awesome outside game to him. Um, and I think, I think that's actually who we probably are going to end up with as well. If we can get Musa and also, and also that kid, I, I think, I think we'll be, we'll be sitting just fine. Um, like I said, right now we need, we need a, we just need a, we need a starting big. We need somebody who's gonna protect the paint, catch the law, be athletic, be a, be a force in the paint. Uh, cuz right now it don't look like we getting Malcolm Dridge back. Hopefully we can get two bigs and, and, and we not have to depend on Malcolm Dridge.

(11:01):

I think Malcolm Dandridge is, I I I, I don't even say he falling outta love with basketball, but I just, I'm just not seeing the work ethic. I I think he's concerned about them knees. He's starting to be in pain, which I understand like, like, hey, I've heard I hurt my foot a million times during basketball. I know, I know the feeling. Sometimes you just feel like you, you just, you just can't get help. You just can't get healthy. You just feel like you just can't get healthy. You try and try and you try and try and try and try, but you just can't get healthy. So, um, hope everything is all right with Malcolm. If if he returns, that's a plus. If he doesn't, uh, we wish him well. Um, but another guy we're looking at right now is Andrew Taylor out of the Marshall Thundering herd.

(11:46):

Uh, he's a junior guard, so I think he'll have two years of eligibility left last, uh, 20 22, 23 season average 20 points per game. Um, around five rebounds and five assists shot 42% from the field. Um, I think that's actually amazing. Um, he's six three, he's initially from Kentucky. Um, I'm not sure if University of Kentucky is looking at him <laugh>, but I hope they're not. Uh, I know Ole Miss and Mississippi State is, um, UCF is looking at 'em. Xavier, Memphis and Western Kentucky. I think those were the people who were looking at 'em. Um, hopefully we can, we, if we can grab him, I think that that'll be all. Just all right. You know what I'm saying? That'll be a nice little solid pickup at the, at the guard position. Um, you know, just to, just, I think that's, that'll be nice if we can pick, if we can, if we can pick up, excuse me, if we could pick up Andrew Taylor, bro, that'll be a nice pickup.

(12:55):

Um, I don't know how we're gonna move the needle with that. N I l probably come in effect. Um, we're also looking at the Georgetown. I think he's the Georgetown Ford. Bradley is Zoo e Isro. Um, he has a, a long list right now. Currently, I think Memphis, uh, stands out. Washington state, Oregon State, uh, Arizona State, Tulsa Ardo wants, that's standing out. Um, he recently visits St. Louis, so I think that's like, um, I think, think that could be into play for sure. Um, but we got, we gotta keep an eye on that one. Um, I'm just trying to think of some more, some more people I know we, we, we've lost out on Jonathan Lawson. We also lost out on Jayden Bradley. I don't wanna touch on that right now. Um, Rayas RAAs Mitchell, I like that kid. Um, he's from U M K C.

(13:58):

I think it's like Kansas City or something. University of, I know Kansas City, but University of Missouri, Kansas City. I think that's what it stands for. Uh, he has a, a, a large list, but I think it's been cut down. I'm looking here. It says Vanderbilt, Utah, Memphis, Mississippi State. Oklahoma State, San Francisco. Um, maybe Vanderbilt could outbeat us with that, but I, right now, I don't think Mississippi State should outdo us in a guard. Uh, this kid can shoot, just watching some of his highlights. I know he can shoot, he has a little bit athleticism to him. Uh, it plays defense. Um, but he can, he can really shoot and he can kind of score the ball. Um, and I, I think he'll fit, he'll fit in the system just fine. Uh, like right now, I think it's very important with guards find like plug and play guards, guards that we can plug into the offense and they can continue to run the offense as smoothly as possible, as needed. Um, and I, I'm just, I'm not sure. I think that's it. Yeah, I, I think that's all that I'm familiar with. Oh, AZ band. Band Dego.

(15:13):

He's from Utah Valley. I think he's like what? Seven foot forcing to paint 12 points, 10 rebounds per game. Three blocks. Listen knee, ya, come talk to me. Come on now come holler at me. Need your buddy. But, um, like a lot of these situations gonna come down to n i l deals. Can you get, can you get me paid? Uh, pretty much. I mean that's what the Jayden Bradley situation came down to. Um, I think that's what it came down to because reading comments on, on Twitter, everybody was saying that, oh, it's gonna be a n I L deal situation. Uh, it is pretty much the highest bidder. And to me, Jayden Bradley, sorry buddy, you're just not worth it. You're not, I mean, I don't know how much she was asking, but apparently I'm thinking anywhere north of 200 and thousand. I mean, I don't Hey, anything north of 200 k Boy.

(16:19):

Hey. Yeah, I ain't, I ain't listen. No, thank you. I understand you was a five star, but I've seen you play at Alabama. I saw you couldn't shoot the ball to save a life. Yes, you are a good point guard, but you can't stretch the floor. Um, you're not going to take over the same situation as like a, uh, as a k uh, Kendra Davis. Um, like I, I would understand if you were gonna bring like the same type of momentum that Kendra Davis had here and, and, and we weren't gonna miss a beat. You was the next Kendra Davis. You was the, the next ball guard. But to me, uh, I'm not, I'm not. So, and yeah, it's cool. Congratulations on him with, uh, you know, committing and I don't know if he signed with Arizona, but uh, congratulations with him on that. And, um, yeah, I mean, hey, you win some, you lose some, but I'm okay with that.

(17:19):

You know what I'm saying? I'm okay with that. I'm, I'm not, I'm not stressing that at all. Um, and I wish 'em nothing but, but, but success in, in a, in a healthy, uh, college career. So, um, we gotta, we gotta move on. We, we gotta move on. We gotta move on. It is what it is. You know what I'm saying? That's how it has to be in this portal. We as fans, we can't fall in love with a player just because we feel like it's a very heavy lean that he's going to Memphis and we think we got it in the bag and we think Penny is the superhero of the Transfer Porter and recruiting. But hey, he did pick up a, a, a, a nice recruiting partner, I must say with, with with Slick Rick coming in the building. Boy, I don't know.

(18:03):

Nah. And in the next two years we, we might, we might can expect some crazy things with, with, with Penny Hardaway and Slick Rick on the recruiting trail. Um, and then you also, um, have, I think his name is Andy, if I'm not mistaken. He's from the New York Renaissance AU program. So he'll have a connection with all the, the the guards and the, the, uh, the bigs up north, which I love up North Guards. Like one thing about New York guards, the DMV area, man, them, hey, we can get some connections in there. We can get some of them guards to come to the University of Memphis. Boy, listen, we might be working with something, man. We, we, we might be working with something cuz it, it could get crazy, you know what I'm saying? But, um, that's, that was a good hire. I think Penny did a good hire even though we, we lost, uh, coach Frank, which, uh, which I'm just so disappointed on that because I think Frank was a, was a excellent assistant to have.

(19:03):

Um, just during these times with the, with where basketball is going. Um, I think the Frank Hay situation was, was, was perfect. Um, now I have to see, uh, how it looks with Slick Rick, um, in, in that, on that coaching staff. I know he's previously from west of Kentucky. Um, so I'm pretty sure he has a lot of connections in that Kentucky area. Um, and I mean he's been coaching, he's been at Mississippi State prior, so he has, he has some ties and he has some connections that we can for sure use. So I'm excited to see it. Uh, glad he joined the staff. It's gonna be an entertaining next couple years to see what they do with, with recruiting. Uh, we'll probably have some more top five recruiting classes coming in. Um, so yeah, it should, it should be fun. Should it is gonna be a sight to see.

(20:02):

Um, and I wanna see what, what, what he brings to the coaching staff side of things when, when it's time, you know, to, to actually coach a little bit. I I, I want to see what, what he brings in that nature. Uh, because the seats was sitting behind the bench, I was able to kinda see that Frank ha had a lot of involvement, um, with Penny when he came to timeouts and things of that nature. Frank ha was like that, that go-to guy. And um, and like I said, that's why I hate to see him lead cuz just being in that, just seeing every home game, how, how things was going and communicated with one another from Penny and Frank. Uh, it seemed like they had a good thing. But, um, I understand the move to Texas. Um, that's, that's, yeah, I understand it. That's, Hey, I'm not gonna knock Frank for that.

(21:01):

You, you, at University of Texas, one of the, I guess you could say one of the richest schools in America probably when it comes to, uh, to money and, and they got a new arena. Just the basketball PR program is, is on a climb. Um, they'll be going to the S ECC soon. If I do, they go to the SCC next year, I don't know, but they'll be in the s e c they'll be leaving the Big 12. So I think, I think that's, that's, that's good. That's a good pickup for, uh, university of Texas, uh, head coach. I think this will be his first full year. Um, and it'll be his direct staff. He'll have a board. Um, so I, I think that's a, that's for sure a a great pickup. But, um, yeah, man, like I said, I've been away for about three weeks, two or three weeks.

(21:50):

I wanted to make sure I get a few pods out to you guys. Um, like I said in this first one, I just wanted to cover a few things. Uh, nothing too serious. Um, uh, I wanted to touch the Mikey's Mikey Williams situation, but I think I'm gonna do a separate episode about Mikey Williams and the JJ Taylor situation. And, um, and then I'm gonna also bring you guys in a, in a world of mine with the AAU season, I think I'm gonna try to do this summer, have, uh, we're on the road, have some of the, uh, the young guys on the pod to just, you know, talk to 'em, get, get their perspective about the grassroots scenery, um, how they like him playing AAU basketball for the program. Um, and also see a what, what, what, what, what they think do I can do.

(22:37):

And, and me and UNC and, and, and BJ can do as coaches to better help them, um, reach their full potential. But, uh, right now the AU team we're 10 and two on the year. Um, we lost in the championship game at Hoop Scene Showcase. Yeah, that was the grassroots showcasing hoops in Louisville, Kentucky. We lost in the championship. Um, it was a 8:00 AM game. And I don't, man, Memphis kids, from what I've seen, just don't do well. 8:00 AM games, but, um, there's no excuses. Tomato, tomato. Hey man, I'm gonna get up outta here. Let you guys have it. Um, peace, love, and happiness, man. Y'all know the, uh, the Instagram, it's J don 9 0 1, the down south pod. Um, follow me, hit me up. Questions, concerns. Twitter j Don 9 0 1 or the down south pod, you know what I'm saying? We, we everywhere man. We everywhere. And, and, and I'm, I'm tapping in with you guys, bro. So, um, peace, love happens, man. Y'all stay safe out there. Stay dangerous. I'm out.
