Have you ever wondered how a simple mix-up might lead you on a path of profound spiritual discovery? That's exactly where we begin our journey in this episode, as a lighthearted confusion over acronyms opens the door to exploring the Holy Spirit's work in our lives. Embark on a candid voyage with us through John 15:26 through John 16, where we dissect the role of the Helper and Truth Bearer. Our conversation isn't just about scripture; it's a reflection on personal experiences with discernment and the often challenging task of aligning our actions with God's will.

Sometimes, even the closest followers of Jesus can find themselves puzzled, as we see in John 14 with the disciples' uncertainty. We navigate through their confusion, just as we often must in our own lives, shedding light on the indelible mark the Holy Spirit left on the early church. Our talk takes a turn towards the profound, considering Jesus' bold assertion that all the Father has is also his, and what that means for the authenticity of the New Testament. This isn't your run-of-the-mill Bible study; it's an invitation to rethink what you thought you knew about the Holy Spirit's enduring guidance.

As we wrap up our discussion with a look at Jesus' teachings on his impending death and resurrection, the promise of joy, and the enigmatic 40 days post-resurrection, we find ourselves at a crossroads. With hearts full and minds nourished, we decide to press pause on recording to cherish a ski trip. But the journey through scripture never stops; we leave you with a compelling challenge to immerse yourself in John 17. As we sign off with encouragement to maintain devotion to Bible study, we can't help but feel grateful for the spiritual sustenance we've shared—now, it's time for some physical replenishment on the slopes. Join us on this spiritual trek, where humor meets the holy, questions find clarity, and the search for truth is as joyous as it is endless.

Speaker 1:

You are listening to the Regular Guys Bible Study Podcast, the Bible Study for Regular Guys by Regular Guys. We are your host, ken and Steve, and we are just regular guys studying the Bible together.

Speaker 2:

Stop theologians. How you doing Ken.

Speaker 1:

You know what I'm actually doing great.

Speaker 2:

I saw an article this week that was talking about Ruth Gader Ginsburg's story and I was like wait a minute, that's RGBS.

Speaker 1:

Oh wow, just like Regular Guys Bible Study.

Speaker 2:

There's people that are going to look for her story and they're going to run into ours.

Speaker 1:

Because they're going to look for RGBS. Yeah, yeah, sure, it's going to happen all the time, and then they're just going to keep listening.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, sure why wouldn't you?

Speaker 1:

Well, we should only be so lucky. You know what, by the power of the Holy Spirit, that can actually happen.

Speaker 2:

It could, so you know with what? Eight billion people in the world. Now, I think that's what it's up to.

Speaker 1:

Is it eight? I think Just crossed the border, Did it just cross eight? Oh gosh, All right. Well, that asteroid is going to hit the earth and take us out some, take us down some.

Speaker 2:

Or all.

Speaker 1:

Or all, or Jesus will come back and it won't matter. Yeah, all right. Okay, well, we are on John, chapter 16.

Speaker 2:

But we're going to start at five twenty six.

Speaker 1:

That's right, I'm calling this John 15, 26, five.

Speaker 2:

We're going to read the whole chapter.

Speaker 1:

Ouch, yeah, I'm calling this John 16, but we are starting in John 15, 26, because it just works out better that way. So, folks out there, whoever's listening, if you have not read John 16, why don't you pause and go read John 16? Because I think you'll get more out of it if you read it first.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, so hit pause now. Okay, we're glad you're back All right.

Speaker 1:

By the way, while you were gone, steve gained 30 pounds. I just made that up. Yeah, he didn't eat anything.

Speaker 2:

No, but I haven't even had dinner yet.

Speaker 1:

Oh, really no. What are you having?

Speaker 2:

Some pressure cooker thing my wife made.

Speaker 1:

Smells really good Having a pressure cooker.

Speaker 2:

Wow, yeah, okay, she makes pressure cookers all the time. That's pretty cool.

Speaker 1:

All right, yeah, I love it Like Instant Pot. Yeah, I love the Instant Pot meals. They're so easy to put together and, just like you say, go Yep, all right. Well, let's go ahead and get started. Let's start, do you want?

Speaker 2:

to read that first section. I will.

Speaker 1:

Because it's pretty short.

Speaker 2:

You know, and I kind of have a thing going on in my throat, I better not be getting sick.

Speaker 1:

You said that last time. Oh, if you're sick for our ski trip, I'll be upset, I'll be upset. You need Because you're going to get sick too, because I'm going, no matter how, oh you better. But look, if you're going to get sick, go ahead and do it now.

Speaker 2:

That's true, all right, john 1526. But when the helper comes, whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me and you also bear will bear witness because you have been with me from the beginning. I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God, and they will do these things because they have not known the Father nor me. But I have said these things to you that, when their hour comes, you may remember that I told them to you.

Speaker 1:

All right, okay, so do you have any notes on this section? I do. Do you want to start, sure?

Speaker 2:

What are your notes?

Speaker 1:

By the way, Steve and I don't share notes. No, we don't know what the other one is thinking, so in verse 2,.

Speaker 2:

How often do you think we are in the right and serving? How often do you think we think we are in the right and serving God but are actually wrong?

Speaker 1:

You and I, or in general people.

Speaker 2:

Or both.

Speaker 1:

Okay, this is what I think. I believe the Holy Spirit lives within us and we know when we do wrong. That's what I think. So nice cough.

Speaker 2:

Steve, would you rather I do it right into the mic next to your?

Speaker 1:

mic as well. I don't think that did any good. No, anyway, you know, this is actually something I felt convicted of a while back, that I had a decision to make and I kept praying about it and not feeling like I got an answer, not a yes, not a no, just like blank space. And one time I was praying and I was kind of mad and I let my emotion out toward God instead of just my normal. I was kind of saying God, why don't you answer me? And I felt God answer me at that moment.

Speaker 2:

What did he say?

Speaker 1:

And I felt like God said you know the answer. And I did.

Speaker 2:

I mean, is this going to go back to which rowing machine to buy?

Speaker 1:

No, this has nothing to do with a rowing machine, but you know, I think I knew what to do, but I felt like I wanted an answer from God and it's like. It's like I felt like God was saying you what are you asking me for? You already know the answer.

Speaker 2:

Go do it, I'm going to share what this was.

Speaker 1:

This was actually about going on a mission trip. Where are you going? This was a while back.

Speaker 2:

I went to India.

Speaker 1:

It was a long time ago. That was a long time ago. But anyway, I think the Holy Spirit, I think I don't. I'm not saying we don't make mistakes or we don't have misunderstandings about what God is saying, but I don't think we have that much misunderstanding that we are just completely wrong about things.

Speaker 2:

So the example that comes to my mind is the civil war. Both sides thought they were fighting. Well, I don't know that not all of them thought they were fighting for God, but I'm sure that there were Christians on both sides and would they fight if they thought they were going against God's will? Which is to say that they must think they're doing God's will, or else they wouldn't fight.

Speaker 1:

Well, okay, first of all, war is a little different because you fight for your country. It's not like people in the South said, okay, do you want to fight for our side or do you want to fight for the North side?

Speaker 2:

And if you, yeah, some of them had no choice. I get it.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, Especially. You know the black fighters were kind of forced into fighting, they had no choice. And I chuckled, but not because it's funny, just because it is what it was and there's nothing we can do about that to this day.

Speaker 2:

Did you know the book War and Peace was almost named War. What is it good for?

Speaker 1:

That's a Seinfeld reference. Anyway, you know there are let's not talk about war, because war is a special case, I think where no-transcript. It's not necessarily about your belief. It's about who you belong to. I belong to the United States. I might not agree with our fight in something, but if I'm drafted, I will fight, because I would not be drafted. I'm way too old. They would look at me and say you're decrepit old man.

Speaker 2:

They'd hand you a mop and say go clean the bathrooms.

Speaker 1:

Okay, I would do that though. All right so, but there are people that go against each other in court, for example, both believers. Now there's other places in the New Testament, in the Bible, that say don't do that.

Speaker 2:

Well, that also says don't get divorced, and there's quite a few Christians that do.

Speaker 1:

So here's. Do you wanna know my real belief, steve? I do. My real belief is that on a good day, I'm being generous here when I say I believe only 25% of people who say they are Christians are actually Christians. They're Christians out of convenience, out of heritage, out of so many different things. My wife's a Christian, so I am. My parents are Christians, so I am. But when it really comes to belief that Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead and is the Son of God, it's pretty low.

Speaker 1:

I think it's pretty low and I heard actually our lead pastor agrees with me on this. He believes it's very low, even the people at our church. All right, wow, that was a lot for that one little thing.

Speaker 2:

And I had another thing in this small section.

Speaker 1:

Okay.

Speaker 2:

All right, verse four. But I have said these things to you that when the hour comes, or when their hour comes, you may remember that I told them to you. Why does he want them to remember that he foretold this?

Speaker 1:

I don't think it's about remembering Okay. It's because it's kind of more validation about who he is and about that. It's okay and it has to happen. It's not a shock to Jesus that he's gonna die, right, Because he wants them to remember. Oh yeah, he said this was gonna happen and it did, yeah.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, the answer to my own question was maybe to help their faith, to give them strength, but he really kind of answered it in first one.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, to keep you from falling away. Yep, all right, so I have a couple of notes.

Speaker 2:

Fire away.

Speaker 1:

All right, he will. Okay. He gives the Holy Spirit the helper. He also calls the Spirit of Truth. He will bear witness about me. What does it mean? What does that mean to bear witness?

Speaker 2:

Well, I think it means to present evidence that he is who he said he is.

Speaker 1:

Okay, yeah, if you witnessed a crime and you were to bear witness, you would say I was there. I saw him strike this person and steal their wallet.

Speaker 2:

Jesus didn't do that.

Speaker 1:

No, but that's what you would say, because you're a bad person. That's a false witness. No, okay, stop it. Anyway, I think it's interesting that the Holy Spirit will bear witness about him, because where did Jesus come from? The Father? The Father where the Holy Spirit is right. If you go back at the creation story, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit were all there, so the Holy Spirit already knows who Jesus is.

Speaker 2:

Well, sure.

Speaker 1:

So, they're all part of the same or all part of the same. Let me see. You already talked about two of the things oh I was gonna mention. Whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. That's, if a Muslim converts to Christianity, they are to be killed.

Speaker 2:

Yep. So, and that family that kills their converted Christian thinks they're. We're doing it for God.

Speaker 1:

Exactly so, and this happens today. It's not like this just happened a long time ago. This happens today. Okay, and then, the very last thing, he says that when their hour comes, you may remember what I told them, that I told them to you. Okay, and you already mentioned this, but it dawned on me that really, one of the most important reasons that we need to read scripture is that we might be able to remember what it says in times of need. Yep, so It'll help us make decisions it does.

Speaker 1:

And you know what? I can tell you, without a shadow of a doubt, that you need a clean ex. Steve, I do. Why don't you get up and get a clean ex? I can tell you that without a shadow of a doubt. I have used scripture to help me make decisions. It just pops into my head because I know it. All right, let's move on to the next section, and I will read this section.

Speaker 2:

This is verse the second half of verse four.

Speaker 1:

Okay, verse four through 15. I did not say these things to you from the beginning because I was with you, but now I am going to him, who sent me and none of you asked me where are you going. But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you and when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment.

Speaker 1:

Concerning sin, because they do not believe in me. Concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will see me no longer Concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged. I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. When the spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears, he will speak and he will declare to you the things that are to come. He will glorify me and he will take what is mine and declare it to you. All that the Father has is mine. Therefore, I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Speaker 2:

So just real quick, I wanna read John 14.5.

Speaker 1:

All right.

Speaker 2:

Thomas said to him Lord, we do not know where you were going. How can we know the way? Isn't that the same as in verse five? He says none of you have asked me where are you going. I mean, it's slightly different, I'll grant you that, and it's. I think it's a different day.

Speaker 1:

It's in a different day, 14,. What day? I don't think so, no, same day.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, oh, I think this is all in the upper room. Still isn't it.

Speaker 1:

No, I know they've remember they were in the room and they were in the room and they said he said let's rise and skedaddle. He said let's skedaddle. That's the red letter edition.

Speaker 2:

Redneck edition.

Speaker 1:

Okay, but I see your point. It sounds like somebody asked him where are you going?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it just seemed like they kind of did.

Speaker 1:

Maybe he's saying no one's asking me right now. Why aren't y'all asking me this now?

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 1:

But sorrow has filled their heart. Why are they sad?

Speaker 2:

Because he's going away.

Speaker 1:

Do you think they know that he's saying he's gonna die?

Speaker 2:

I think at this point they do. But I won't be surprised if later, you know, maybe even in the next chapter or something he's like. You just don't get it.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I think there might be some suspicion that he's gonna die. I mean that he's saying he's gonna die. Even the Pharisees said is he saying he's gonna kill himself? Or something like that right Right. Is that why we can't go where he's going? So I think that's what's going on here. All right, so he has to go away or the helper's not gonna come.

Speaker 2:

Yep.

Speaker 1:

And what will the helper do?

Speaker 2:

He will convict the world of sin and righteousness and judgment.

Speaker 1:

Well, not of, but concerning.

Speaker 2:

Concerning sin and righteousness and judgment. So for sin, because they do not believe in me. Right, I have a theory. If you can wait sins on their severity, the biggest one is not believing in Jesus. Well, because if you don't believe that, it doesn't really matter.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's, your sins aren't gonna be forgiven, right? So, okay, yeah, okay, I'll go with that, because you could do all sorts of things and then believe in Jesus and he'll take away your sins.

Speaker 2:

Yep.

Speaker 1:

So, okay, yeah, I'm for that. Okay, so, because they do not believe in me. That's concerning sin and then concerning righteousness.

Speaker 2:

Because I go to the Father and you will see me no longer. I just don't get that. I don't understand that.

Speaker 1:

Okay, darn it, I would put a question mark, meaning the question mark means ask Steve.

Speaker 2:

Oh, you must have lots of question marks. Nope, should we use our call a theologian?

Speaker 1:

First of all, it's not call a theologian. It has to have a iteration.

Speaker 2:

Oh.

Speaker 1:

So it'd be talk to theologian or it'd be.

Speaker 2:

No, I don't like that one Poke a preacher. Oh, that's a good one.

Speaker 1:

But I don't think they would appreciate Ping a pastor. Ping a pastor, that'd be good. Or it sounded a little bit like you said peeing a pastor no, ping. Ping Ping Does he lead the Chinese church? No, Ping the pastor no.

Speaker 2:

Oh, I like it, oh, okay.

Speaker 1:

I don't really know if that's a Chinese name, is that?

Speaker 2:

I don't know either.

Speaker 1:

It was a name on Seinfeld, the delivery person of the Chinese food that was injured. By who? Elaine?

Speaker 2:

I think I had not nearly as addicted to Seinfeld as you were.

Speaker 1:

For some reason I know all these things and his name was Ping. So Well, it must be true then, Anyway, so I don't get that one Concerning judgment no, I'm sorry concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you will see me no longer.

Speaker 2:

Oh, maybe he's been giving them all these lessons on righteousness, and now the Spirit is going to do it in his place.

Speaker 1:

Oh, that is it. Yes, yes, you're right. Good job, steve. And then concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged, which is, who is Satan? All right, he will guide you into all the truth. This is the spirit of truth. He will guide you into all the truth. What does that mean?

Speaker 2:

I Think he guided the Apostles and how to interpret the Old Testament and scriptures and everything Jesus said so that they could carry on and teach others.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you know, it seems like the apostles suddenly became experts in Revelation, I mean in the prophecies of Christ yeah and I think that was revealed by the Holy Spirit. You know, in much the same way, when Jesus was walking with the two guys on the way to Emmaus oh yeah, walk, yeah, the walk to Emmaus. And he started explaining how the scriptures must be fulfilled to them through Jesus. And Suddenly their eyes were open and they realized that's Jesus and he was gone.

Speaker 2:

Yep. So that's, pretty cool stuff but this verse 13 that you pointed out. You didn't read the whole thing, but it ends with and he will declare to you the things that are to come, guide you into all the truth, and speaks, not on his own authority. Whatever he hears, he will speak and he will declare to you the things that are to come. This whole thing, I feel like, is sort of an endorsement of the New Testament.

Speaker 1:

Hmm, yeah, that's true. That is a good point. I did not even put that together, but I think you're right. He's. He's saying he's gonna tell you all these things and that are to be shared, okay. And then he says all that the Father has is mine. Therefore, I said that he will take what is mine and Declare it to you.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, what does that mean?

Speaker 1:

All that the Father has is mine. Therefore, I said that he will take what is mine and Declare it to you. So what is Jesus's all? Things all that the Father has is mine, so everything. Therefore, I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you but what does it mean here to declare it Like?

Speaker 2:

is he just Telling us about all that is Jesus's Okay?

Speaker 1:

have you seen? I don't know, but have you seen the office I have? I Declare bankruptcy. Do you know that one? I don't remember that, that's, that's how he declares bankruptcy. He just declares it. Okay, of course, that's, michael, I think. Declare it to you, meaning just I Claim it to you, or I, you know, I pass it to you, do you?

Speaker 2:

think it means passing it on to us. Yeah like bestowing. Yeah, that's what I think have you looked at another translation?

Speaker 1:

No.

Speaker 2:

See, I'm kind of curious on this one.

Speaker 1:

I haven't all right, let's look at another translation. That's Not the translation I want to see.

Speaker 2:

I want to see new international version.

Speaker 1:

What versus that?

Speaker 2:

Shoot I just lost. I think it was like all right 13 or 15.

Speaker 1:

All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.

Speaker 2:

Hmm, see there, the NIV came in handy. Is did it. I don't know what that means.

Speaker 1:

All right, here's another one all that belongs to the Father is mine. This is why I said the Spirit will tell you whatever he receives from me. It's very similar to the NIV, but it's not bestowing. No, it's not. It is. Telling how declaring that's why yeah that's what declaring means yeah, it means Saying it All right, but I can see how you'd get confused with it being Like a bestowing it to you, but it's not.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I don't know. I feel kind of like I was stupid there.

Speaker 1:

I feel that way a lot, that I was stupid. All right, tell you what I think. Let's read this, this other section we're not gonna finish chapter 16. Well, should we stop now then, because there's a good no left here.

Speaker 2:

No, I think we're gonna finish chapter 16.

Speaker 1:

No, I think we should cover this this next to last section.

Speaker 2:

All right.

Speaker 1:

I will read this, since your throat is bothering you. Oh thanks, all right. This is verse 16 through 24 a Little while you will see me no longer. And again, a little while, and you will see me. Some of his disciples said to one another what is this that he's saying to us? A little while, and you will not see me. And again, a little while, and you'll see me. And Because I'm going to the father. So they were saying what does this mean by a little while? We do not know what he is talking about. Jesus knew what they wanted to ask him, so he said to them Is this what you are asking yourself, what I meant by saying a little while and you will not see me? And again, a little while, and you will see me.

Speaker 1:

So, truly, truly, I'm not. So I'm sorry. Truly, truly, I say to you you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. When a woman is giving birth that she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish for joy that a human being has been born into the world. So also, you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice and no one will take your joy from you. In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you whatever you ask of the father in my name, he will give to you. Until now, you have asked nothing in my name. Ask and you will receive that your joy may be full, alrighty, okay, so, first of all, he talks about in a little while you know what we might finish this whole thing because well, I don't have much notes on that last Section well, there's really not much shoot.

Speaker 2:

But my notes up. So a little while, see me no longer. So to me that means is burial Again a little while and you will see me. Okay, that's the resurrection, but it seems to me like the last one, where he says no one will take your joy from you in that day. You will ask nothing of me. That one to me sounds more like his return, but he doesn't have another little while in there.

Speaker 1:

No, and I don't think he's talking about his, the next return. I think he is talking about the resurrection. The resurrection and the reason I think that is Because he makes all things known to them at that point, and so I think at that point, when he comes back, we don't, we don't have a lot of information about what he said to G, to his apostles, over those 40 days.

Speaker 2:

Wonder, why that is kind of interesting right.

Speaker 1:

It's like I, I think the Holy Spirit Just well, looking at the Holy Spirit, jesus just poured out over the disciples, all that, a bunch of stuff, and it sunk in. But they didn't write this stuff down because for some reason I don't know. I have no idea. Hmm, seems like another ping the pastor you're looking at me Like I'm an idiot. You think that's funny?

Speaker 2:

a little bit yeah.

Speaker 1:

I messed up my notes.

Speaker 2:

I, I, I guess I just don't see a reference to his return here, but the whole thing of not there being much written down of the 40 days is kind of weird.

Speaker 1:

That is weird, but I don't know what to say about that. Maybe we'll. When we get to that point in John, maybe there'll be more than I remember.

Speaker 2:

That's hope so.

Speaker 1:

That would be cool. So, yeah, I think he's talking about his death and resurrection. I'm going to see him for a little while. Then you won't see him for a little while. Then you're going to see him for a little while. Oh, is that too, not going to see, what is it? A little while, and you will see me no longer. And again, a little while and you will see me. Okay, he doesn't say another. You won't see me much after that, all right, so compares it with a woman giving birth.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and I think that's a really good illustration because it's very painful. Now, my, my, my woman, I meant to say my wife. My wife had a C-section, so it wasn't the same thing. But when I was, I was, was I married? I'm not sure I was married when she had her C-section.

Speaker 1:

Yes, you were married, not that when I was either in college married or in college engaged, and a friend of ours who was already married and they were getting their masters, she had a baby and it was on like a Saturday late at night and the doctor didn't make it in time to give her an epidural. I mean, some women do this on purpose. That was not her purpose and I'm not going to say who this person was because she might be listening. I doubt she's listening, but her husband could listen. I don't know the string of vulgarity that came out of her mouth. This great Christian girl it was, it was something, and she was extremely embarrassed by it, obviously. But you know, that just says a little bit about the pain of childbirth and it sticks with me to this day how painful that must be.

Speaker 2:

I don't even like to think about it. Nope, nope.

Speaker 1:

Nope, all right, see that section. While it was longer, there really wasn't much to talk about, because he talked about the same thing over and over again, there was a lot of repetition yeah, so I think we can do this last section, all right. All right, I'll read this again, because of your stupid throat thing.

Speaker 1:

All right, this is verse 25 to the end, which is 25 to 33. I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech, but will tell you plainly about the Father. In that day, you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf, for the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and you believed that I came from God. I came from the Father and I have come into the world, and now I am living, I am leaving the world and going to the Father.

Speaker 1:

His disciples said Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech. Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you. This is why we believe that you came from God. Jesus answered them. Do you now believe? Behold, the hour is coming indeed, indeed, it has come when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. I said these things to you that in me you may have peace in the world. In the world, you will have tribulation, but take heart, I have overcome the world.

Speaker 2:

So when I read this I've read a lot in the last week but so he is saying how I am not going to speak in figures of speech anymore, I will speak to you plainly. And then the guys are like yes, yes, you are speaking to us plainly now because you told us you are speaking to us plainly, but we still have no clue what you are saying. But we don't want to look stupid, so we are going to ask any questions.

Speaker 1:

That is exactly what it sounds like he says. He is speaking plainly so they don't want to sound stupid and not not an act like they don't understand, but they obviously don't. Yeah, All right, I have a question for you, Steve Shoot. What does it mean to ask the father in his name?

Speaker 2:

That's not in this section, is it?

Speaker 1:

Oh, that was up above. See, my notes got all messed up, oh man. You're throwing me off here I know it All right, I still want to ask you that question.

Speaker 2:

It means Jesus.

Speaker 1:

Okay. So, he has been talking in the previous chapter a whole lot about. I am in the Father and the Father is in me, and then he talks about the disciples being in him, and so it kind of got me thinking. What does it mean to ask in Jesus' name? I started thinking I don't think this has anything to do with his name.

Speaker 2:

What would it have to do with then?

Speaker 1:

So if you are in Jesus, if you are living your life in Jesus, then it has to do with how you live your life, right?

Speaker 2:

So you're saying anything you ask is already according to his will and therefore will happen.

Speaker 1:

That's not what I'm saying at all, but that is. That's another topic. I don't know what you're saying. I'm saying that asking in Jesus' name means asking. Nice Asking. Oh gosh, how am I trying to say this? I?

Speaker 2:

wish I was smarter. You're not speaking plainly. You're using figurative speech.

Speaker 1:

This is not figurative speech.

Speaker 2:

This is you're having trouble using speech.

Speaker 1:

I'm having trouble using speech. Yes, are you a Biden Shut up, anyway, you should be a Biden in him. I'm trying to say that asking something in Jesus' name means you're living your life for Jesus. So asking things while living for Jesus, asking things also. It would also mean you're asking things that Jesus wants you to ask. Well, not what I said, oh sort of yeah.

Speaker 2:

Okay.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, never mind oh my gosh.

Speaker 2:

All right, have you gotten your notes straightened out? I don't know. I haven't really touched on this last part at all.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, let's go ahead. Why don't you ask your questions?

Speaker 2:

I didn't really take any notes. You know why? I think that is Because it's the end of the chapter and by then you're tired of taking notes. I'm ready to be done for the day, yeah.

Speaker 1:

I understand.

Speaker 2:

And I should start at different places in the chapter each day. Anyway, I do have a comment though. Okay, At the very end there he talks about how they're going to be scattered to his own home. I assume this is when they come to arrest him and they all run and hide.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, yeah. So it's very similar to what he just said a little bit about Peter a little bit ago. About Peter, yeah, but it's after that, right, this is before they've scattered, when that Peter denies he knows Jesus, and then they scatter. Yeah, yeah, it's very similar, all right. So I think it's interesting that he says let's see, in that day you will ask in my name and I do not say to you that I will ask the father on your behalf. So he's not going to ask the father on their behalf. And why?

Speaker 1:

Because the father himself loves you Because he doesn't need to. Yeah, he's saying I don't need to ask the father on your behalf, because the father already loves you.

Speaker 2:

Which I guess this is removing the priest from being necessary.

Speaker 1:

Well, this is not necessarily about the priest, it's about Jesus. But you're right.

Speaker 2:

Well, there were sacrifices prior to Jesus of animals for forgiveness of sins. It had to be done by the priest. Only the priest could go certain places. Here we can come directly to the father.

Speaker 1:

Right, yeah. So yeah, Jesus is saying I don't need to ask on your behalf because God already knows that you love me and he is looking out for you, All right. So then they say, okay, like you said, oh yeah, now we understand and we really believe. And then Jesus's response oh yeah, do you really believe? And then, you know, says that they're going to be scattered. But he does say but don't worry, Right? He says don't worry about it, I'm not alone, Fathers with me.

Speaker 2:

And I'm telling you this in advance that you can have peace.

Speaker 1:

Yep, and but you will have tribulation.

Speaker 2:

But take heart, jesus has overcome the world.

Speaker 1:

Yes, he has.

Speaker 2:

He already won. There's a song there.

Speaker 1:

What is that song? He's already. That's a David Crowder song. He's all oh gosh it's over. It's tipping my tongue, it's like it may be. It's like a little chant, I think, in between songs or something, anyway. Anyway, that's the end of John, chapter 16. So until next time, yeah, so here's a question. So, stephen, are going to go skiing next week in Breckenridge. Should we bring this stuff with us and record while there, or skip a week?

Speaker 2:

I think we'll probably skip a week.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I'm thinking, so I think it'll be hard for us to focus on this. Yeah, all right.

Speaker 2:

Yep, all right, so it's going to be two weeks until the next one, two weeks for you to read chapter 17. Chapter 17.

Speaker 1:

You could read it every day and really be an expert on it. An egg spurt.

Speaker 2:

E All right, see you yeah.

Speaker 1:

That's all I got.

Speaker 2:

I'm hungry.

Speaker 1:

I'll bet. Okay, and cold, it's freezing in here. Okay, thanks a lot, guys. Read your Bible. Bye the regular guys. Bible study is a chasm LLC production. You can find these up until Friday night.
