Speaker 2Three.
Speaker 1Oh, really, me too. What translations did you read?
Speaker 2ESV, of course yeah, ESV, yes, and New King James.

Speaker 2It doesn't have the these and the thou.
Speaker 1Yeah, but it's still the same, king James.

Speaker 1Okay, I did ESV, niv, just like you, but then I did NLT, which I actually like. It's very similar to NIV.
Speaker 2I don't think I have that one downloaded in my app.
Speaker 1Maybe you should download it.
Speaker 2I could do ASV American Standard Version, but that's, I think, a lot of these and the NASB is what you'd want the new American Standard.
Speaker 1I said B, you did. I think it is B in ASB. New American Standard Bible.

Speaker 1Okay, all right. Well, why don't we go ahead and get started? It's pretty long.
Speaker 2It is, and we really do need to get through the whole chapter.
Speaker 1Yeah, we need to get through the chapter, so let's get started. You want to read the first part, sure?
Speaker 2Now, on the first day of the week, mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple the one whom Jesus loved and said to them they have taken the Lord out of the tomb and we do not know where they have laid him. So Peter went out with the other disciple and they were going toward the tomb. Both of them were running together, but the other disciple, john out, ran Peter and reached the tomb first and, stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lining there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came following him and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there and the face cloth which had been on Jesus's head, not lying with the linen cloths Cloths, it's cloths. Dang it.
Speaker 2That's so weird, but folded up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple who had reached the tomb first, john, also went in and he saw and believed for as yet they did not understand the scripture that he must rise from the dead, and the disciples went back to their homes.
Speaker 1Okay, you know, this is the first time I realized that does not say clothes.
Speaker 2No, it's cloths. It's cloths. And last week you kept saying clothes and I think it wore off on me.
Speaker 1Really, I don't know. There's a net on your mic. That is there is.
Speaker 2Get it, get it. Do you want to learn about Jesus?
Speaker 1It's a net. It can't learn about Jesus Alrighty. He was actually thumped him off. I thumped him off. That's pretty good, okay, so um, all right. In summary, mary went early, saw that the stone had been rolled away and Jesus went there.
Speaker 2Peter's out of shape.
Speaker 1I don't know. It didn't say Peter's out of shape, he just says the other disciple, john, outran Peter because he's faster.
Speaker 2Because Jesus loves him yeah.
Speaker 1And um, all right, so he outran um Peter, and he looked in there, but it didn't go in, and then Peter got there finally ran right in and just like Peter always does, Um, and he sees the cloths. That's really hard to say.
Speaker 2It is hard to say cloths cloths.
Speaker 1Um, and I was in speech therapy as a child for that, for my S's. And now it's like I feel like I'm back in that when I when I try to say that.
Speaker 2So I grew up in the country we didn't have speech therapy. They just hit you on the back of the head.
Speaker 1That is speech therapy. Oh, ok, it's the same thing Cool. Anyway. So he goes and goes in and he sees the the cloth folded, the face cloth cloth is folded. That to me sounds like Jesus took it off and set it aside. And the other, the other cloths were just sitting there. So then, then the other disciple who, ok, blah, blah, blah, and he saw and believed. What did he believe?
Speaker 2I had that same question. Did he believe that the body was gone or that Jesus had risen?
Speaker 1I think this is where the other translations come in. Well, oh really. I think so. If you look at the NLT, well, and I will say it's not one, it's not word for word, but it's trying to give what the intention was. And it says and he saw and believed, for until then they still hadn't understood the scriptures that said Jesus must rise from the dead. So so if you look at the NLT, that's trying to say that at that moment they understood the scripture that he would rise again.
Speaker 2So at that moment they believed that he rose from the dead, but they didn't share this with Mary, because she's stuck around as we're about to see and we don't know.
Speaker 1It doesn't say they didn't share it with Mary, but she still thinks that someone took it. She might not believe, hmm, so all right.
Speaker 1So I don't know what else to say here. And I mean they just this is just what happened. This is just stuff that happened. So why don't we go on to the next section then? All right, all right, but Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. All right, actually, they could have shared this inside the tomb also, and then they left and didn't tell Mary, because you know she's a woman. That's pretty rude. It is, but it is a different kind of society, or maybe they did tell her, and she just rather, she's still crying yeah.
Speaker 1I'd rather think she hasn't fully grasped it.
Speaker 2Yeah, that's, I think so.
Speaker 1All right, but Mary stood weeping outside the tomb and as she wept, she stooped to look into the tomb and she saw two angels in white seating where sitting, sitting on the ground. She was sitting where sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. They said to her woman why are you weeping? She said to them they have taken away my Lord and I do not know where they have laid him. Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her woman why are you weeping? What? Who are you? Who are you seeking, supposing him to be the gardener? She said to him sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him and I will take him away. Jesus said to her Mary. She turned and said to him in Aramaic, rabboni or something like that, which means teacher.
Speaker 2I think it's Rabbani, rabbani.
Speaker 1Rabbani. No, that's El Shaddai. All right, anyway, jesus said to her do not cling to me, for I've not yet ascended to the Father, but go to my brothers and say to them I am ascending to my Father, and to your Father, and to my God and your God. Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples I have seen the Lord and that he had said these things to her. All right, I can't hear it very well, steve. I can't hear it. Very well, steve, get on with it, dude. What is this, Steve?
Speaker 3So how do you go about announcing this word in English or American?

Speaker 1Rabboni. Okay, so it's Rabboni. She cried out Rabboni, which means teacher. Okay, so, mary, why do you think she didn't recognize Jesus?
Speaker 2So I was thinking about this If she were in the tomb, it's dark and she's not in the tomb. Well, she's, it could be at the entrance.
Speaker 1She stood weeping outside the tomb. Now there are saying that the people struggle to peaceful with all their anger and envy.
Speaker 2It's the people we need to be eaten by in order to make the good as good as we can, but she's stooped to look in. She turned around and I suspect he was in the door way of the tomb so he had a bunch of bright light behind him. It's dark behind her, maybe she just couldn't see it.
Speaker 1I think it's because her eyes are full of tears, and so she.
Speaker 2That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.
Speaker 1Maybe I am the dumbest thing you've ever heard.
Speaker 2I think we can all agree on that.
Speaker 1But I don't know if you've ever sobbed, Steve. You don't seem like the sobbing kind of guy. I have cried my eyes out before you know what I'm gonna be real.
Speaker 2Let's get real Ken.
Speaker 1I cry at movies sometimes.
Speaker 2Like ball your eyes out, cry, or just like a little teary.
Speaker 1Not ball. Okay, I have balled my eyes out once at a movie that was oh shoot, what's the movie with?
Speaker 2The.
Speaker 1Passion, the Passion of the Christ.
Speaker 2Yeah, that one I'm pretty sure I was crying at.
Speaker 1I could not stop. I mean, I was like physically moving up and down with my tears. There was one time where I just could not stop crying. I felt really awkward, but like watching up in that first 20 minutes or so and she dies.
Speaker 2That one always gets to me.
Speaker 1I actually had real tears fall out of my eyes.
Speaker 2I'll get moist, but this is pretty rare for a tear to drop.
Speaker 1Yeah, See, I am manly enough to not be ashamed of tears Steve Are you sure, cause I think maybe with the size of your breasts.
Speaker 2Maybe manly is not the right word. Is this a family show? I think you meant pecs, pecs. I can see now why I got them confused, alright.
Speaker 1That was.
Speaker 2That was pretty good low blow there wasn't it.
Speaker 1It was a low blow.
Speaker 2It was above the waist Gosh.
Speaker 1Anyway, I will say this when you get teary-eyed you don't see that well, it's very blurry. So you know. I think she's sobbing. I think her sobs make her not be able to distinguish the voice of Jesus for one, and he might not have been speaking in a way that she could understand on purpose, until he says Mary, and then it's obvious to her how he says her name.
Speaker 2You mean like he was impersonating Peewee Herman or something. So what I don't understand he said he was speaking in a way she didn't understand, like he was impersonating. I don't. Hey woman, why are you weeping Is?
Speaker 1that Peewee Herman or Kermit, the.
Speaker 2Frog. See, I think what happened was Jesus went to his angels and he said okay, you guys, you go wait in the tomb, I'm going to stay out here and when you get her attention I'm going to come up behind her and surprise her.
Speaker 1Maybe so, but okay, when? Okay, let me ask you this If you're at a party, there's a lot of people in the room.
Speaker 2I don't get invited to Super Bowl parties.
Speaker 1By the way, if we had invited you to our Super Bowl party, it would have been just you Anyway. But if you're at a party I know you've had parties and if you hear your wife say your name, you hear it. That's true, she can be talking, but if you hear her say your name, and then you tune everything else out.
Speaker 2she says what?
Speaker 1Yeah, that's true, but in the same way, I think when Mary hears Jesus say her name, it's like bam, that is Jesus.
Speaker 2Well, you could take it back to the parable of the sheepherder and the pen and the sheep know the voice of the shepherd.
Speaker 1That's true. It could be as simple, as complex as that, or just as simple as recognition, anyway. So what did Mary do with this info?
Speaker 2Well, she clung to him at first.
Speaker 1Or at least tried to. Maybe she did.
Speaker 2What do you think about the whole Kling thing?
Speaker 1I don't know.
Speaker 2Is this like one of those unclean Jewish law rules Like don't touch me or I'll become unclean?
Speaker 1That's a good question. This is when we should phone a friend. Maybe we should look that up.

Disciples Encounter Jesus After Resurrection
Speaker 2Well, I'll continue with. After that he told her to go to the other dis. Well, he says my brothers, but I assume he means the disciples. And then she went and did it.
Speaker 1Yep, she, then she did it but I'm still.
Speaker 2I'm gonna jump back to Peter and John. Okay, after they believed, they went to their own home. They didn't like go tell the other disciples, or.
Speaker 1They had his very, they split up. They split up and went home. Maybe it was to tell their family.
Speaker 2Maybe they realized they forgot to brush their teeth and had to go back and do all that stuff.
Speaker 1All right, the verb cling to is literally touch. Apparently, Jesus cannot be touched until he ascends to the Father. So this is just apparent.
Speaker 2You know there's but Thomas touches him.
Speaker 1You know, I've wondered this also was there he? He says it in a way that it's like I'm going there right now and I'll be back maybe.
Speaker 2Hmm, we don't really know how this, how his wife was here, could have gone up right after this and then came back.
Speaker 1Yeah, I don't really know.
Speaker 2I am ascending to my father and your father, to my God and your God right.
Speaker 1So you know, maybe it's something like that that could be Heretical though I don't know if what I'm saying could be One of these horrible things to say that that's possible.
Speaker 2Don't know why we would Put those kind of rules.
Speaker 1Well, because you have the second coming of Christ. If he went and then came back, We'd be to the third would be to the third coming or something I don't know. So I don't really know, but and apparently no one really knows, but apparently He'd at least prefer not to be touched before he goes back, or at least not by Mary. You know what she could have been on her period?
Speaker 2It's possible that was the thing that made people unclean.
Speaker 1Yep. Specifically, it made women unclean.
Speaker 2Most men didn't have periods back then but they couldn't touch the woman that was.
Speaker 1I know, but now men can have periods.
Speaker 2No, they can't.
Speaker 1Yeah, they can no, steve. I'm not going there, it's all right, let's go on. Yeah, let's go on. All right, why don't you read the next section, steve?
Speaker 2All right. On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being locked where the disciples were, the doors being locked where the disciples were for fear of the Jews, jesus came and stood among them and said to them peace be with you. When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord Jesus said to them again Peace be with you, as the Father has sent me. Even so, I am sending you. And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them. If you withhold Forgiveness from any, it is withheld.
Speaker 1All right, that is. That's some pretty Heavy stuff there.
Speaker 2Yep.
Speaker 1Couple of things there are a couple of things he does show them his hands inside, so all right. So he's. Sometimes he there, appears to them or walks through the door, the closed door or wall or whatever.
Speaker 2Or somehow manages to open it even though it's locked or or opens it but I Don't think it matters.
Speaker 1No, but some. But by, by some miraculous way, he enters the room and he says peace, be with you. I think that's just a greeting.
Speaker 2You don't think it's to have them relax a little, because a ghost just came in there through a locked door? You think they might think it's a ghost well, when he was walking on water, they thought it was a ghost.
Speaker 1That's true. That's true, maybe, so Maybe, maybe it's similar to when angels Show themselves. Yeah, do not be afraid.
Speaker 2Yeah.
Speaker 1Maybe something like that they were glad to see him. It does not say they were afraid. They were glad to see him as a as the father has sent me. Even so, I am sending you.
Speaker 2He's passing on the task that his father had given him which is To spread the word of his coming. Well, his job was to do the coming yes their job is to spread the word yes, all right now this. This part. I'm confused about this a little controversial right here. It can be yes because it sort of contradicts with the whole day of Pentecost.
Speaker 1It doesn't contradict, it's just different. It's different and.
Speaker 2All right, so we're referring to. He breathed on them and said receive the Holy Spirit. Yes, so did they fully receive the Spirit at this time? Did it happen a second time later in Acts so?
Speaker 1This is my opinion, steve. I'm gonna just share my opinion and I want this to be clear, that this is my opinion. This is from the book of first year.
Speaker 2My opinion this is from the book of first opinions.
Speaker 1Yes, Brad would say the book of first opinions, but my opinion is that Christians today do not understand the Holy Spirit and and I think that's pretty safe to say honestly- would not argue with that and Jesus actually does not say I am sending you the Holy Spirit. At when he ascends, he says I am sending you a helper or the helper.
Speaker 1And here he's only telling them to receive the Holy Spirit and now he's breathing on them and he's saying receive the Holy Spirit. I think the Holy Spirit Might be multifaceted. We like to just Put the Holy Spirit into one big box, but God does not fit in any box that we want to put him in, and I think we like to do that with the Holy Spirit and say this is what the Holy Spirit does. But I think it's obvious from scripture that our view is just too small and we don't understand it. So I think this is the Holy Spirit, that he's breathing on them for this purpose to forgive people's sins or to withhold forgiveness of sin.
Speaker 2So a couple of questions on that. Do you think we have that same ability? I have my opinion, but I want to hear your answer.
Speaker 1I have my opinion. My opinion is no.
Speaker 2Mine is too.
Speaker 1I think this was special and this was also just to the 12. Or, I'm sorry, not the 12, the 11.
Speaker 2No, actually it was just 10. Thomas wasn't there.
Speaker 1Thomas wasn't there. That's right, it was just the 10 disciples.
Speaker 2Which is my other question. Did he not receive this?
Speaker 1I think he did not receive it at this time, but he might have received it later in the next paragraph Perhaps. All right, why don't we go on to that next paragraph? Is that okay?
Speaker 2That is fine.
Speaker 1All right, I'll read both of these.
Speaker 2Actually the second one's small.
Speaker 1Now Thomas, one of the 12, called the twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him we have seen the Lord. But he said to them unless I see his hands, his hands, the mark, unless I see in his hands the mark of the nails and place my finger into the mark of the nails and place my hand into his side, I will never believe. Eight days later his disciples were inside again and Thomas was with them, although the doors were locked.
Speaker 1Jesus came and stood among them and said peace be with you. Then he said to Thomas put your finger here and see my hands and put out your hand and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe. Thomas answered him my Lord and my God. Jesus said to him have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those, or blessed are those, who have not seen and yet have believed. Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples which are not written in this book, but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Speaker 2Okay, so, is Jesus just walking around with this big gash in his side and these holes in his hands?
Speaker 1You know he's appearing in a room, or? In the flesh, not as a ghost. I mean like they can touch him, they can put his hand in his side, which is pretty gross, that's pretty gross. So it's not like a ghost, but it sounds like he can appear and disappear. Disappear on wheel on wheel, wheel, wheel On a wheel.
Speaker 2He's like a hamster.
Speaker 1Yeah, yeah, that's what I'm talking about. No, but the way he appears in the room, I'm assuming he's not just walking around for the most part, but he's going different places that we don't know about at times, I'm sure.
Speaker 2It's just really weird. I mean, I have trouble envisioning what this looks like. When Thomas does it Like, does his finger actually go through?
Speaker 1his hand. Like you see his finger on the other side. Ugh, that would be weird.
Speaker 2Clearly he's not bleeding.
Speaker 1But yeah, I don't think he's bleeding and he's probably not like pussy or anything. That wouldn't make sense.
Speaker 2So it's just weird.
Speaker 1Yeah, he's just got holes.
Speaker 2He is holy Ugh Broom boom.
Speaker 1All right, so you know, this is a pretty remarkable thing, though, Right Right. So these guys just saw Jesus die, and now let's see a span of this is at least a week and a couple of days later. So let's see, three days after he died they went to his tomb and he was risen. Does it say it was that afternoon or not that he appeared?
Speaker 2On the evening of that day.
Speaker 1Yeah, on the evening of that day he came to them, and then eight days later, so that would be 15, 18 days after he died on the cross.
Speaker 2What?
Speaker 1No, you love an idiot, as an I'm an idiot is what I am Steve an idiot.
Speaker 2Yeah, he's you another week in there this.
Speaker 1Eleven days have passed and Jesus is not only not dead, but he is something much more than just a man.
Speaker 2See, I kind of think that the whole the holes and stuff. He did that just for Thomas.
Speaker 1I think you're right.
Speaker 2I don't think the rest of the time he walked around with a cash.
Speaker 1Well, not just for Thomas. He showed them his hands, in his and his side. The first time. The first time is right. They.
Speaker 2It doesn't say they all had to touch them to make sure they were real, but apparently Thomas needed that well and I want to believe that you know he was fully healed, because I want to be fully healed when I'm resurrected. I don't want like if I get to Burnt in a fire, cremated or whatever. I don't want to be a box of ashes up in heaven.
Speaker 1I want to Be a new body right, but he also hasn't ascended yet, so maybe.
Speaker 2Well, we don't know that.
Speaker 1Well, we don't know. But if he hasn't ascended yet, maybe that's when the new body comes. I don't know. And here's where we come in, steve, in verse 29, have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed. So we are those, anyone you know. Think of all the millions of people who have believed in Jesus but did not have that luxury that Thomas had pretty much all of them, statistically speaking Okay.
Speaker 1That's true, statistically speaking, all believers. There's a, okay, there's a few outliers, a few hundred outliers that have seen Jesus after he was resurrected. Yeah, all right. And then he, you know, he says now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the silos, which are not written in this book, but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by by believing, you may have life in his name.
Speaker 2And who is?
Speaker 1this to? Who is he talking to?
Speaker 2He's talking to whoever's reading this.
Speaker 1No, he's. He's writing this to who? A Wonder or great theophilus.
Speaker 2Oh yeah.
Speaker 1Is that right theophilus?
Speaker 2But I think that's just a term for someone seeking God.
Speaker 1No.
Speaker 2I don't know?

Speaker 2Theo is a term for God, theophysis is a philosopher.
Speaker 1I okay, I understand that. But Okay, my name Ken means handsome, okay, no, we know that's not right.

Speaker 1if you were to say, oh, I was talking to Ken the other day, that does not mean you were just talking to a random handsome man. You were talking to this handsome man, are you sure? Finishing John's Last Chapter
Speaker 1All right, so. Onward to the last chapter of John yes, that's coming up next week and we will finish it.
