Dec 18, 2023

Hey there, welcome to the NorthStar Physical Therapy podcast!

I am your host, Dr. Shirlea North and I dive into lymphedema, lipedema, and various pelvic health dysfunctions. My goal is to provide to you a better way to understand these conditions so that you empower yourself with knowledge to advocate for yourself. Let NorthStar Physical Therapy guide and navigate you on your journey to optimal health!

In today’s episode, we will be talking the question, “What does your brain have to do with your pelvis?” We will be diving into the nervous system and how this affects our pelvic area. You might think that they are not connected at all but you will be surprised to know otherwise!

I want you to listen to this episode so that you can understand how your body works and how you can have your pelvic floor functions in their optimal health!

Let’s discuss:

  • Introduction to today’s topic
  • The different types of the nervous system and the function of each
  • What happens with people who have over dominant sympathetic nervous system and its relation to the pelvic floor
  • The Vagus nerve: what is it, what does it do, and what happens to it when it’s bombarded with the sympathetic signal
  • The importance of downgrading and downtraining the brain to reverse the effects of the dominant sympathetic nervous system
  • The different techniques that we can do to overwhelm the brain with good sensations and help with reducing symptoms of an overactive pelvic floor
  • Some triggers of the parasympathetic nervous system that affect the pelvic floor
  • Conclusion
