Speaker 1:

Hello everyone, welcome back to the Word of the Week on the BMET podcast. This is a special bonus episode and on this week's episode, our Word of the Week is Perseverance. So I want to share this quote with you by my Angelo you may encounter many defeats, but you must not be defeated. In fact, it may be necessary to encounter defeats so you can know who you are, what you can rise from and how you can still come out of it. My Angelo's words sum up so very well what perseverance is all about.

Speaker 1:

Perseverance refers to our ability to pursue our goal or passion over time, even when we encounter setbacks or obstacles. As you may know, it requires a lot of perseverance to become a physician. We have so many years of training to do, but we're not just doing it for ourselves. We're doing it because we love the patients that we take care of and we love the communities that we serve. It's important to have that stick to attitude because as you pursue your goals, you will encounter obstacles. I'll give you an example, even for this podcast, I had ideas of pursuing a podcast for years, even as a resident, but I didn't necessarily have the time to get to pursuing starting a podcast during that time, because I was busy doing other things. I ended up accomplishing some goals outside of medicine, but that wasn't one of them. So all these years later not that many years hold on. Let's not get carried away here. A few years later, here I am being able to start my podcast this year because it was something I wanted to do and was a goal that I had for a long time. But it takes perseverance, or that ability to pursue a goal over time, even when you hit setbacks and obstacles. So remember, perseverance is that stick to it attitude. It's that no matter what happens, no matter the ups or downs, highs or lows, I'm going to show that I can do this, no matter how long it takes. So perseverance helps us to pursue our goals, even when they may take time and we may run into obstacles or challenges. You have to remember that perseverance, having that quality, that stick to it attitude, is really important as a physician or a physician in training, when we think about the struggles that our patients are going through, the endurance that they have to have for the challenges they're going through with their physical health, their mental health and even their spiritual health. It takes a lot of effort and a lot of energy for them to persevere, for them to overcome, for them to be able to navigate their health challenges. So for us, as their caregivers, the ones that are helping to figure out their diagnosis we have to have a stick to it attitude to show we'll continue to do our best for our patients, we'll continue to think broadly about what may be going on with them. We'll continue to support them over time, even if we don't have all of the answers. So it takes a level of perseverance even when we engage with our patients.

Speaker 1:

Life is all about showing that you can continue to move forward even when you're having struggles. It's not to say that you don't get the support you need. It's not to say that you don't know when to take breaks and make sure that you balance your life in all the different areas that you need to. But life is about being able to continue to move forward even when things get a little rough. So my challenge to you is to think through what are some ways you've persevered in the past, what are some ways that you can continue to show yourself I've done it before and I can do it again and what are some ways that when you feel like it's really hard for you to persevere. What are some ways you're going to give yourself grace or find ways in which to be supported in times of challenge? Life is a journey. We're all on it together, myself included. It's a journey both professionally and personally.

Speaker 1:
