Speaker 1:

The productivity tip of the week is time management. One thing you can't get back in life is time, and on this episode, I'm here to help you think about how you can maximize yours. Let's jump right in. Welcome back to the BMAID Podcast. I'm your host, dr Jasmine Weiss, and on the BMAID podcast we share inspiring stories of black physicians and physicians in training. Today we're going to talk all about how to make sure you are maximizing your time. Imagine that you're back in your freshman year and you have so much to do and now you don't have anybody to help you make sure you're navigating like your parents, who were previously when you were in high school. Now it's up to you to figure out how to organize your time and stay on task. I know from experience that those skills that you learned early as a pre-med absolutely will follow you in med school and beyond.

Speaker 1:

Even now, as a practicing doctor and a researcher, I am always thinking about how to maximize my time, as I'm juggling so many things from patient care to research. So I want you to think about what are some things you can do to maximize your time and to build up your time management skills. The first thing I want you to think about is only pick three tasks in order to make sure you accomplish those tasks before you get to your laundry list of things you need to do each day. We know that it's tough being a student. You're juggling your schoolwork, your social life, being in student organizations, and we want to make sure. Even though you might have 20 things on the list, you can't do all 20 things well every single day. So I want you to make sure you either in your phone lock in the top three things you want to do for the day or use your journal to write down what are the three tasks you must accomplish before you do anything else for the day. The next strategy I want to make sure you think about is do you have enough time allotted as you create the task list that you have? For instance, you can't read a whole biology chapter or an anatomy chapter in 30 minutes. So don't fool yourself into thinking I can accomplish this because I want to go off and hang out with my friends or be social. Be smart about really thinking about how long it takes you to accomplish each task. I still use this every single day when I'm writing a paper and if I'm writing the discussion section or outlining something. I can't be fooled into thinking it's only going to take me an hour. By the time I really get into it, it might take me three or four hours. So I have to be realistic about creating the plan and allotting the appropriate amount of time.

Speaker 1:

Last but not least, I want you to think about what always happens to us when we're trying to do something important. We all get distracted. Right, these phones that we have? They're always, always, always causing distractions. So when you're thinking about managing your time to complete those three tasks a day, make sure you eliminate the distractions. Put the phone down. I repeat, put the phone down, put it away, put it in the other room until you accomplish what you need to accomplish. It is so easy. I know you do it because I do it. Sometimes you can be scrolling and you think, oh, it's just going to be five minutes, and you look up in 45 minutes of gone by. So it's important to eliminate those distractions as you think about those three tasks you want to accomplish and then you can move on to the rest of your list.

Speaker 1:

I want you to remember the time management is a skill that's built over time. With repetition, the more you focus on creating your plan, making sure you knock out the three main tasks for the day, the better and better you will get at those skills. You'll always have curveballs thrown at you as you're trying to make sure you focus on the things you need to do. But don't forget, if you only pick three tasks, knock out those tasks before anything else can take place, and watch how much you remain organized and grow and build on your successes. So we've talked about making sure that you have three tasks that you want to complete for the day, making sure you have a plan to complete those tasks and aligning the appropriate amount of time for each task.

Speaker 1:
