Speaker 2:

Hi everyone and welcome to episode number 68 of the Good Neighbor podcast. Today we have Good Neighbor Dr Steve Sheldon with Sheldon Wellness. Dr Sheldon, how are you doing today?

Speaker 3:

I'm doing great. How are you, Lisa?

Speaker 2:

I'm really good. Thank you, I'm so excited to have you on the podcast.

Speaker 3:

Excited to be here.

Speaker 2:

Great. Well, let's first start off by telling us a little bit about your business.

Speaker 3:

Our clinic is kind of different from other chiropractic clinics in that we use therapies as well as chiropractic treatment and nutrition to help people get well faster. We are looking at restoring movement to the spine and therefore it relates back to preventing spinal degeneration. Our motto is move better, feel better and live better.

Speaker 2:

That is a great motto to have.

Speaker 3:

Thank you.

Speaker 2:

Let's tell our listeners about your journey. Why did you get into chiropractic care?

Speaker 3:

I began chiropractic care at age nine and I injured my arm, elbow and playing baseball. My dad took me in and I thought that was for old people. I told him. Anyway, he got me pitching better and playing baseball better. Then again, at age 13, I injured my hip real bad where they carried me off the field of stretcher and took me to the hospital where they wanted to put bolts in my spine and as well as they told me that after that was done they needed to put rods in my back because of my scoliosis. The fact was I went right back to the chiropractor and in six months I was running and getting ready for baseball season. Two years later my scoliosis was straightened out. That led me to believe that chiropractic a lot at that time. That was my first journey.

Speaker 2:

Yes, that is an amazing journey too. Can you tell us about any myths or misconceptions that you hear about in your industry?

Speaker 3:

I think all us chiropractors and everybody around they say once you go, you always have to go. My response to that I always go back to the dentistry I said. Dentistry profession for many years struggled with getting everybody to maintain their treatments. That's all about strong and healthy teeth. Chiropractic is the very same way. If your spine gets misaligned and it takes you 20, 30, even 50 treatments to get it straightened out, you should have maintenance type treatments to make sure your spine is strong and healthy.

Speaker 2:

That makes sense to me.

Speaker 3:

That's a great concept, isn't?

Speaker 2:

it, that is, tell us, what do you like to do for fun when you're not working on your business?

Speaker 3:

I love to golf when I can. I love bike ride. I love swimming. I also love going to baseball games because, as I spoke before, baseball was my. I loved it as a teenager, even as I was older, but I love going to the games now Also. I love when my wife and I go on trips and we go for walks. That's always fun.

Speaker 2:

That is fun. I'm sure you have some favorite places you like to go for walks.

Speaker 3:

Oh, yes, we do.

Speaker 2:

Can you describe one hardship or life challenge that you rose above and can now say because of that challenge that you're better for and or even stronger?

Speaker 3:

Yeah, I believe so. When I was 19, I finished high school. I was 18 at high school, but when I was 19, I injured my back because I did not go to college. And I was one that did not want to go to college, not knowing I'd go nine years to college but later on. But I injured my back so bad that I herniated to disc and mulched two others. Of course I was back to the chiropractor and chiropractor got me well again, but then again, since then I've been in that same area of my back four times. Each time I've been back to the chiropractor and, of course, because now I'm a chiropractor, of course, but it has saved me from getting dis-surgery. That's what I tell people all the time Maintenance and sticking with the chiropractor will prevent that surgery, no matter how old you are.

Speaker 2:

That is good advice as well. Thank you for that. What is one thing you wish our listeners knew about your business?

Speaker 3:

The one thing I think many people don't know is that the chiropractors help restore proper nerve function to the body and it's not all about back pain, it's about stimulating nerves to make the cells, tissues and organs of the body work properly. That's why and many people do not know that we treat babies. You know, I've treated babies three years I mean three days old and with torticollis. You know, coming out of the wound having a strong pull and their neck goes to one side, and we worked on children with torticollis. We worked on children with ear aches and children that get asthma and allergies, and all these are related to nervous function and so many people do right now that we treat the babies as well as the geriatrics. Of course, as we get older, we need more care. We find and, once again, if you move better, you feel better and you live better.

Speaker 2:

So that's good. It's like the line they say a body in motion stays in motion.

Speaker 3:

Exactly exactly. And you have to keep that away.

Speaker 2:

That's right.

Speaker 3:

I have some 92, 93-year-old patients. Wow, that is. And believe me, they get along better than some people in their 70s. I couldn't believe it, but they've also attended chiropractic care since they were in the 40s. So it has a lot to say with sticking with chiropractic care, just like we've stick with. Like I said before, if we stick with dentistry, we make sure our teeth don't fall out.

Speaker 2:

You're right. You're absolutely right. Well, now you have our listeners intrigued, so how can they learn more about you? They want to come see you. What do they have to do?

Speaker 3:

Well, anyone. We always open to anyone that wants to come by for free consultation. I'll be glad to sit down and talk to them about their problems and tell them what we have to offer them Also to see a tour of our clinic, because many people don't know of all the therapies we have in our clinic. Now our clinic is open six days a week. I have another doctor in my clinic with me and Dr Gina Roberts is a phenomenal doctor and she works well with children as well as geriatrics, but she's an excellent, excellent doctor.

Speaker 3:

Okay so they want to stop by.

Speaker 2:

Do they need to call you to schedule an appointment?

Speaker 3:

It always is good if they want to sit down with me for a consult, because we tend to be pretty busy and I want to always give them a good 20, 30 minutes of my time so I can answer some of their questions and take them around and show them the therapies we have to offer our clinic.

Speaker 2:

That is good, so what is the phone number to call?

Speaker 3:

The phone number is 248-289-6870.

Speaker 2:

Okay and I just make a phone call and I can come in and schedule an appointment with you right, yes, and see all we have to offer. Well, Dr Selden, I appreciate you being on our Good Neighbor podcast today.

Speaker 3:

Well, thank you. Thank you, I appreciate it.
