Lingering in Internal Exploration: What We Can Learn from the Teenage Girls Brain Development and the Wise Woman’s Voice

Center for Sacred Arts - Karley Denoon Season 1 Episode 5

In this episode, Lois Sapsford teaches us about the remarkable brain development of teenage girls. She shares what we can do as parents to support the healthy development of our children, explores what superpowers we all have access to that can help our children tap into rich inner resources, and what we can do as women to “linger in our internal exploration”.

For this interview, I had the pleasure of being in Lois’s office and I truly hope you can imagine yourself cozying up into a comfortable chair, with her young female client’s raw and beautiful art on the walls while you listen.

Lois Sapsford is the founder and director of Juno House in Calgary Alberta. She works with girls experiencing anxiety-based issues that result in eating disorders, self harm, and obsessive behaviors. These teenage girls are the “tough clients” so many therapists dismiss or deflect by saying, “come back when they are ready to talk”.  Right from the beginning of her career over 35 years ago, Lois knew she loved these girls. She loved how they were the most honest people she had ever met once they felt safe. She loved that their brains were not cemented in certainty yet, and learned over her career how to connect and support the girls to become Strong and Sassy. Lois’s playful and highly relational approach to therapy is warmly received by girls looking for this connection and honesty.
