We got Miss D.

Speaker 2:

Dinales, yes.

Speaker 1:

You on the podcast today and I sound like a gringo. My apologies, but the most beautiful word in the world is our own name, so make sure that you get to pronounce it properly. So thank you for taking your time today. So let's talk through your journey. You went from trainer NCFPT one of those weird acronyms taking time off Failed NASM. A couple times Came across the Crazy Belt Buckle Trainer. Now look at you.

Speaker 2:

I know I'm definitely grateful to have I wish I actually came across you guys first and enrolling in NASM, but you know what Things happen for a reason it somehow led me to you guys and I'm just really excited to become more knowledgeable about the human body and just really make me a better trainer so I can help more people.

Speaker 1:

Really stuck out to me about your story is our mission is to change the fitness industry by creating qualified personal trainers, and it just it kills me. I literally have a hard time sleeping at night, and it's not because of the whiskey, it's because, thinking of how many people take a test from a textbook, your level, zero certification, and they fail it and they go. You know what? I'm not smart enough, I can't do this. I'm going to have to do something else, and so that passion is crushed because they don't have the grit and the humility that you had to say you know what? It's okay, this isn't defining who I am. I'm going to try it again. But then you failed it again and you still had that bounce back to give it a shot. So take us through why you chose NASM first, but also, before that, you were a trainer for almost a year at 24 Hour. So let's start there.

Speaker 1:

How did you become a trainer at 24?

Speaker 2:

a year at 24 hour. So let's start there. How did you become a trainer at 24? So I, uh, after I finished college, I ended up working in advertising for a couple of years and I started working out with the trainer because I wanted to get in shape and that's how I discovered my passion for fitness and I'm like, wow, I really love this, like I'm going to make a career change. And I ended up getting the cert with NCSF and I was a trainer. I was also a Zoom instructor. I worked my way up to an assistant fitness manager and for me, it was really. I just did really well with sales, but I didn't have that foundation that I needed with the human body, how the body moves, anatomy, and I always looked up to the trainers that did and I went to them for advice all the time.

Speaker 2:

And what led me into NASM was I took a little break and I'm like, okay, I need to get my certification again because I want to relaunch my business. And I failed twice and I wish I actually found you guys first before doing that. But I've been very grateful, truly, because working with you guys especially that study guide that one week I passed in one week. So I studied everything that you told me to study on the guideline, with the, with the YouTube videos, the quizzes, quizzes, and it just made sense. And not only did I pass, but I actually feel like I knew what I was doing.

Speaker 2:

So it was more than just passing, because after I passed it I'm just like, okay, now what? And now I'm in your internship program and I'm like, okay, I can actually improve and get better. So I have actually an excitement and something to look forward to, especially that seminar. Um, so this is where I'm at now and had I not been, you know, integrated with you guys, I still would have had a certification and still really not know, like I would have had nothing to really look forward to as far as enhancing my knowledge on the things I want to want to learn.

Speaker 1:

So you're going to be out May 18th and 19th to Sacramento. You're taking that cross-country flight You're flying out of is it Newark where you fly out of Newark? Yeah, to Sacramento. Yep, you're going to meet Joe, you're going to meet the team there and we're really excited because this is going to be one of our biggest seminars with Lifetime Trainers. So we're going to be surrounded by a bunch of DPTs who've been doing this for anywhere from a couple of months to numerous years and they're not familiar with SHOP. So it's really exciting for us for that opportunity, thanks to Dustin and our opportunities at the in our partnership with Lifetime. Then we're also going to be in Jersey in June.

Speaker 1:

So if you want to check out that seminar and you're listening, make sure to get the early bird pricing. If you want to check out that seminar and you're listening, make sure to get the early bird pricing. But really I get excited about thinking what's going through the mind when you failed once, you failed twice. What is your mindset like? In sport? It's like you missed two shots. You have to come back with a new plan. What was your mindset like when you failed after that second time?

Speaker 2:

I felt like I wasn't smart enough to do it. I'm just like, oh my God, like I've worked at a gym and there were trainers that had a certification and they can really like excuse my language, but they can really give two shits about their clients while they're on their phone and they have a NASA certification how I really actually care about people and want to know how to do things properly and I can't pass this. This is crazy. Yeah so this is exactly how it is.

Speaker 1:

I always make a little joke because I feel like people will fail by one or two points. You probably got a 68 or 69. I did. You never know what you missed and that's what's really. I challenge the industry because if our intent is to be known as the gold standard, the best certification out there, how can you say that fail and not know what you failed? So imagine this individual if you would have got one more question right that first time, compared to the third time, at that moment would you have felt comfortable training people and confident?

Speaker 2:

I would have felt comfortable but not confident. I believe highly that being in an internship program at the level one is really helping me build that confidence. Because, I will be honest, like even though I'm doing like online coaching right now, I get a little shied away like oh, these are my rates and I just feel like I feel kind of like wait, so I need to make sure that they're okay paying this or that, mind you, like if I really understand my anatomy and like I'm around like very knowledgeable people, like that's going to help me even further build my confidence, like, hey, this is what it is and I can do this, this and that for you.

Speaker 1:

So you also had a year of working with people, which contributed to being okay training someone. So this is powerful for new trainers that when you see someone online and they take a photo with their piece of paper whatever the level zero cert is I'm not knocking that individual. I just did a podcast talking about Jelly Roll. Are you familiar with who he is? No, oh, he's a country singer. He has a really cool story. You know bad past and jail a bunch when he was a young kid, but then was able to overcome those demons depression, and now he's a big country rock. But then was able to overcome those demons depression, and now he's a big country rock star and he lost 70 pounds and I did a podcast talking about how he lost it. And I'm not attacking him, I'm showcasing the how behind it and that's really what I'm really discussing here and trying to get the word out there is because, just because you have that piece of paper, it doesn't mean you know what the fuck you're doing.

Speaker 1:

And you saw that you're in a gym and you're looking at these trainers like holy shit, they are a certified individual in this profession and they don't know the why behind they're doing it. They literally pass a test and no one will ever check them to see if they're doing it right. And that's scary to me because, as you highlighted, we want to help people. How are you supposed to help someone if you don't know how to? And it really fucking blows my mind is you highlighted perfectly. You have a newer trainer. A client comes in. They don't know how to work with them. They have knee pain. What are they going to do? They're going to go to the trainer next to them, who's been there longer, who they think they know how to do it. But it's just the blind leading the blind. And so it could have been knees over toe exercise that you saw over here, or you did this BOSU ball over here, but it wasn't actually that exercise in itself. It could have just been the way you explained it. It could have been the fact that they were coming out of pain, and pain is multifactorial. There's so many things that go into it, but knowing the why behind it, that's what really levels you up.

Speaker 1:

So then, when you have that assessment, you say you know I cost 125 bucks an hour. How do you want to pay for it? And you say it with so much confidence. They go, oh shit, here's my credit card. I want 100 sessions. And you're like, oh shit, you're sure. I mean, that's the confidence that you want and it comes from being in environments, around individuals who are doing it the right way. What would you say has been one of the best things that you've learned so far being online? Because we've never met before and I always love hearing these stories because there's a little bit of hesitation. People will get certified, they'll get to level zero and then they'll say I'm going to go out there and practice by myself, or I don't learn that well online, but it's a different dynamic. So talk to us a little bit more about some of the things that you've learned being online and within the app.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, sure. So, um, I've watched like Josh's videos on variations and I think it's really cool because it's like you know, as a trainer, you think like, oh, you have to have like your client do this crazy thing, but not really Like it's okay to set a firm foundation and, once they progress, like change the variations whether it's like sets, reps, anything, tempo, things like that and just like understanding their thought process. It helps me a lot really, not kind of differentiate myself, and it's just inspiring to listen to each and every person that teaches these classes, because I'm like, wow, like I finally have like a group of people that I can actually learn from, you know, and not worry about. Oh, I have to make my meet, my sales quota at a gym.

Speaker 2:

You know, I've always wanted more than that, just because, like, if I were to go, if I were in college, I would have definitely majored in something else other than business. I would have definitely liked to do like physical therapy. But I'm like, wow, I have the opportunity to be as knowledgeable as possible and be a personal trainer. So it's kind of like a double win, you know. So now I'm just like you know what. Everything happens for a reason. I did what I had to do, and now it's just time to get better.

Speaker 1:

I was at the pre-rehab guys million follower celebration celebration and I'm around a bunch of top tier physical therapists and I was chatting with them.

Speaker 1:

I felt so out of place because everyone is a dpt and I was talking with them all and it really hit me at that moment that every single one of them wanted to be like me, what I was doing, having my own business and having our own kind of clinic. And I was like, wow, you know, why don't you guys do it like, oh, yeah, you like, oh, you know, I'm so scared, I have too much debt, and so therapy and trainers are very, very similar. And how ironic and look at the irony behind that because we want to create an environment where therapists and trainers are working hand in hand and potentially therapists even working for trainers. So how cool would that be where a lot of trainers want to become therapists but they don't for whatever reason, which is kind of similar to you and then potentially be in an environment working with them but maybe even employing them. So that's really neat to hear about that with it.

Speaker 2:

But, um, I'm also like I hear all the, all the things you speak on the podcast and from the book and it's just like you know, being able to partner with like healthcare professionals and be that be respected as a trainer because, like you, even in your book, like it's true, like trainers are really not respected for how to help someone and it's because a lot of people don't really know what to do with anatomy and all that stuff. So that would be kind of like a dream come true to be able to like partner up with healthcare professionals, physical therapists and stuff.

Speaker 1:

That's exactly what's going to happen, so I know you're busy. I'm really looking forward to meeting you in person. We'll be there Friday, Saturday it's going to start around 11 o'clock. It'll be all day Saturday. All day Sunday. You're going to learn a ton, have some great fun and some workouts. Maybe we'll even drink some whiskey together. Until that time happens. You have any questions for me? Before we call it a day?

Speaker 2:

No, not right now, but I want you to know I'm really excited for this. It's going to be a little vacation for me, but something that I'm really going to take away a lot. I know that for sure.

Speaker 1:

All right, Thanks, Miss D. Looking forward to meeting you in person. And remember what's the most important thing Showing up.

Speaker 2:

Showing up. Have a great day you too.
