1.       Shout outs and Special Thanks

Hey, everybody. This is Daniel Dae. Kim. You're listening to PK. 2s This is Jay Chong, the music producer, a member of the group. Solid, solid, solid, solid. And you're listening to chat GPK 3s welcome back. This is Chat GPK. What is up? Anya Haseo. This is PK. And I'm really thankful you're listening. I'm pretty much on a track to do this once a week. Now, hopefully I could do more than once a week, but my life only allows me right now to do this once a week. So I appreciate everybody listening, and I'm getting more feedback now than when I used to have a TV show on Mnet. It's like an Asian MTV. Korean MTV show. 2011. Myself, Yvonne, and we had a staff, like cameramen, video editors, like a little mini cable TV channel we had we worked in Culver City, and 2s if you count all the salaries up and everything, that little show costs like a million dollars 1s to produce that show. And I wrote for it, booked the guests, and we brought the little things that we featured so low budget. We used to feature, like, apps on her phone. And Yvonne used to bring her heels and. 1s But I don't know. I don't know how many people watch that. Maybe tens of thousands of people. I have no idea. But no one ever said, oh, why I watch you on that show? And for those that did, later on, I found out people were like, oh, dude, that show, it was pretty bad. And it was because our director was horrible. She was the worst boss I've ever worked for. Will never mention her name. 1s I don't have to. But she was Korean, constantly screaming and yelling at us. And I hated it. I hated going to work. We were underpaid. We later found out they were way overpaid. Probably taking money from Korea and then just paying us little tidbits. But I learned a lot. 1s She's that micromanager that wanted to be producer, but also the director. Also put herself in the episodes. But she would make us do this thing every show. The show was called BPM Beats per mnet. The name of the show was Cool, but we would have to do this thing called Faverave. Like we're some little kid Nickelodeon show. And every time we go feature something, we go, and now it's time for our Faverave. In the whole studio, all the camera in, and everybody would yell, Fave rave. 1s It. Every time I would cringe and said, every time we did that, but she would just say, Just do it. I would talk about, like, Liberty, North Korea, and she'd be like, make it interesting, 2s make it funny. 2s But I don't know how I survived that. But gained some friendships out of that, and that's all that matters. And learned a lot about showbiz, how crazy it is, even from that little show. But just from this little podcast that I started, I'm getting way more positive feedback. So I just want to thank some of the people that have 1s said, hey, PK, keep going.

2.        The Never Give Up Folder

And I encourage everyone to create a folder in your email. 1s I call mine never give up. Call it whatever you want, encouraging emails or whatever. But anytime I get, like, an encouraging email, I put it in there. And anytime I feel down, I just look through his emails and instantly I feel better. 1s We all go through ups and downs. You can't always be happy, 1s but some of us are just I'm not talking about clinically depressed, but naturally, if you're going through, like, a lull or just feeling down or lost, create a folder. 1s And whenever you get something positive, inspirational, especially personal messages, just pop it in there and then just look at it once in a while. And so I've gotten some messages from my friend Sunte. He's like, I listened to your podcast. It's very comforting. Appreciate that, brother. Steve Kim, our new collaboration executive director. We're going to announce that soon. He's saying good. 1s Sometimes the background music is too loud. I get it. My friend Ryan, he said, no, the background music is good. Loud enough. He's always a contrarian. I love him. Young Kim always encouraging me. Keep going. My tongue SengS. From church. They reminded me I used to be their VBS leader, bible study leader when they were, like, little kids. Now they're married. Crazy jane and Susie. They've grown up, and they said, oh, they've been listening, so I appreciate them. By the way, when I was a VBS leader, I remember I joked around saying, I don't know if it's their class or another class. I joked around saying. 1s Oh, yeah, there's a little mermaid that lives in my backyard. I was just joking. Never joke about that with little kids. I guess one of the kids went home and told their parents, like, oh, yeah, my teacher said he has, like, a little girl lives in his backyard. And then they came to me and checked up, and they're like, Wait, what did you say? I'm like, no, I was kidding. I said, like, a little mermaid lives in the pool in my backyard. I'm like, oh, okay. Lesson learned. I told it to my wife. She was laughing, but she was also like, don't ever say stuff like that. 3s Who else? Hannah Cha. Appreciate it. She posted on her IG I generally have a lot of respect for those in pursuit of their passion and dreams. The authentic voice of a peer, sharing all the rawness, humility, laughter, enjoying pains of life worth living respect. PK. Thank you. Hannah cha at one underscore car. 1s And also my old friend Susan, who I haven't talked to in years, and she said she checked it out. Sue Jen. What's up? And she's married, living on the East Side. And she said, I just want to let you know I listened to your first podcast episode. I'm proud of you. Way to go. Taking action, pursuing something you want to do. I'm not even a podcast person, 1s but I just happen to see it, and it's a perfect amount of time to listen. I encourage you to keep going and inspires me to want to do something I've thought about but not taken action on. See even that message I appreciate so much. And I saved those in a folder. And when I started collaboration, the Asian talent show, I was getting a lot of those kinds of emails from students all over the country. Like, they're saying, like, I'm one of the only Asians in my neighborhood, or I'm the only Asian in my neighborhood. And this means so much, this Asian talent show, to see people that look like me, that represent us, and they're talented and they're expressing themselves. And I have those emails, a lot of them, and I think I'm going to go through them again today, too, just to be inspired. So create a folder like that. That's a good tip. Also, another tip I learned from a Christian pastor, John Maxwell. He's kind of like a motivational speaker. Christian pastor. Those, like fire and brimstone pastors, they always talk shit on them. They don't talk about the Bible enough. But 1s yeah, I get it. Like, you know those Joel Olstein types. I get why some of the pastors are like, they're not even Christian. Like, whatever. I don't even know if I'm Christian. But by the way, I'm not a Joel Olstein fan either. Because when the hurricanes happened in Houston, he even opened up his doors to the homeless and to people in need. If you're not going to open your church doors in times like that, then what's the point of having a church idiot? And then in the meantime, he's pilfering millions of dollars and drives sports cars.

3.       The Happy Times Folder

Anyways, there's a Christian pastor, John Maxwell, who I like, and I remember he talked about how one thing, the mind is so powerful and you can really. 1s You know, if you if you're feeling down, just think about the happiest times in your life. This is nothing like rev, you know? It's like, you know, a revelation or anything, but it's a good reminder how powerful the mind is, and you can 1s just think about those times. 2s For me 2s when I was young and when I was five years old, my mom did a little surprise birthday party for me. And it's one of my earliest memories. When I woke up and I came out, my family wasn't even done decorating. They're, like, putting up balloons and stuff. But I was like, what's this for? And then they're like, for you. Happy birthday. And then I was like, for me? And I just remember 2s just that pure joy. Like, you can only have, like, that first time when you're a kid. That's why when you take little kids to Disneyland, you live vicariously through them because you can never have that back. You get jaded as you get older. You get spoiled. 1s And then people can start getting entitled. Those people that go to, like, a nice club or restaurant, they're like, look at this place. They don't even have this kind of silverware whatever. And you just want to, like, what? There's people starving to death today in the world every day. And so it's just good to remind our selves to be 2s just think of those moments, those milestone moments or those specific moments that can help you. Just remind you, like, oh, yeah, I was, like, so happy during that time. I remember Tony Robbins would always talk about that, too. You can really create these markers and mentally go to these places where you're very. 2s A remind. You're reminded.

4.       Motion creates Emotion

And also motion creates emotion. Working out, and I've been on a good street. My son, he plays tennis. He takes tennis lessons every day for an hour, and it's around 07:00. So when we drive over there, it's like a twelve minute drive. I don't want to drive there and drive back home. So while I'm there, I realize, okay, I'm going to just start running around the track. It's been one of the best things s for me. I'm not a runner. I hate running, but since I'm there, I'm forced to run for an hour. I cannot run a full hour straight. I look at those people like, how do they do that? Run? And then I jog and then I walk. I walk a lot, but pretty much I run when I can and run and walk, run and walk. The whole hour. I'm just running and walking. And then I hit three, 4 miles of running, walking for that hour, and I've lost weight. I feel great afterwards. Emotion creates emotion. And sometimes when I come back, I work out in my backyard. Sometimes my sons come out, work out with me. It feels great. And I'm also inspired by my friends, man, 1s john Kwan, Ed Kim, they've always been working out. And Andy her annie. Joe's, like, professional bodybuilder is disgusting if you look at his instagram. But. 1s I'm really inspired by one of my close friends, Jae Shin. Man, I give him a shout out like he used to be skinny like me. College, we hung out. And then 2s he's one of those very organized, methodical guys I know because he would win our fantasy football league every year. But 2s one day when he just mentally just was committed, he went crazy. Workout, protein shake, diet, working out like crazy, and he blew up. He got yoked huge buff. And our whole group was like, Yo, Jay. And the honor of being his best man at his wedding. And I gave him mad props for that. 1s People respect that, 2s and it affects you in life, too, is just discipline. I've seen Jay and he's always been smart, UCLA guy, successful, but went to his house recently. I'm like, Bro, you leveled up, man. OC and Irvine, his house is beautiful. Big, gorgeous dream house. So props to you, brother. And my brother Dave Bond, man, he's always been just like, buff, ripped. Yoked. I have so many friends like that just by them who they are and constantly being disciplined, it inspires me and challenges me. And I don't really care about being Yoke stuff. I just want to be healthy, man. I want to live long. I want to see my kids have kids. Once you see your kids have kids, man, that's a circle of life. And of course, you want to be a great grandparent, but being a grandparent, if you can stay alive to see your grandkids get married, man, gold medal. 1s So props to my friends and thank you for all the people who've been listening. My friend Doy said he's been listening. I don't even know who's listening until they until you tell me. So, man, if you're listening, I appreciate it. I'm getting random IG messages from people who've been listening 1s really encourages me. I feel like I'm reaching more people now than that TV show I had, which is crazy.

5.       Word of the Day – Scintillating

All right, today's word of the day I'm not always going to go Urban Dictionary, so today's word of the day is scintillating. I love the word scintillating. You know why? Because sometimes I've said the word titillating and titillating. There's something about that word that bothers me. I don't know. It feels like a dirty word. But scintillating. It's just like the scintillating conversation. That scintillating argument. It's like scorching. I looked at the definitions brilliantly, lively, stimulating, witty example a scintillating conversation. You know, when you're in a conversation that's scintillating, it's not like an argumentative, political conversation, but a lively, like, witty fun with your friends. 1s You know, I remember I got together with my boys, John, Ed and Jay. This is our first time getting together when the pandemic started calming down. People are still wearing masks. We were at a restaurant in OC, and we haven't seen each other in over a year, I think. And we just were talking about memories, and 1s it was a sit to lady conversation. We were laughing and just talking about edgy things that only we could talk about inside stuff. 2s And there's some friends like that. When you talk with them, it just feels so comfortable and lively and fun, and it doesn't feel like some people just weigh you down. They're constantly complaining, but some people are just lively. So I love that word. It's better than titillating. Titillating.

6.        Stand up Bit of the Day:  Jerry Seinfeld – Rhinoplasty

It's just some words that are like it reminds me of that Jerry Seinfeld. This is my stand up comedy bit of the day. That Jerry Seinfeld bit when he talks about rhinoplasty. 1s I looked up his bit. It says the technical term for a nose job is rhinoplasty. 1s Rhinoplasty. Rhino. Okay. Do we really need to insult the person at this particular moment of their lives? They know they have a big nose. That's why they're coming in. Do they really need the abuse of being compared to rhinoceros on top of everything else? Or should I use his voice? When someone has a hair transplant, they don't go, we're going to perform cubolectomy on you, Mr. Johnson. We're going to attempt to remove the skin hideia on your chromdomia, which is a technical term. 1s Jerry Seinfeld man, he's a wordsmith. And one thing I learned about him, his styles and a comedy. He used to talk about how every word matters. You could tell a bit and then have one word off and it changes the whole bit. It's so true. I can't even count the number of times. 2s You just say, like, one word off and then the reaction changes. 1s Not only that, where you go in the show matters a lot. And my friends know, like I've told the same bits over and over, but. 1s I've done my bits when I'm a host. And then after a show, people are like, hey, you should be a comedian. Why don't you be? I'm like, I am a comedian. What are you talking about? But I'll do that same bits when I'm introduced, like, later in the show, like, a different night, I'm introduced, I'll do the same bit. And people are like, you're an amazing comedian. You're such a funny comedian. I'm like, this is the same bit. Mentally, people are like that. Man 1s how the room is set up matters too. You could have a big room and 200 people, or you could have a small room and 100 people that's packed. And the small room that's packed will always be more loud and hype. So if you're ever organizing a show or event or whatever and there are extra chairs, get rid of the extra chairs and put them in the back or stack them away or put them away, it matters. Those things matter. Having music when people come in the room matters. Like having the room lively and having the mic loud and having the room lights more dim, all those things matter. For events and being prepared. 1s Um I don't know how I got sidetracked on that, but yeah, basically, don't use the word titillating or rhinoplasty. All right. 1s

7.        Person of the Day, Li Pasha - Chen Bangxian

My person of the day is Lee Pasha. I was looking up his actual name because I think they were calling him, like, Uncle Joe or something. I forgot his name, but I saw on Instagram one time, he was a gray haired, Chinese s amateur runner, and he became an Internet station after he was spotted doing something crazy, which is smoking while running a marathon. And he finished two marathons while chain smoking. You guys probably saw this. This guy is 2s a superhero, man. Like, what? 1s First of all, I've only run ten K's, which is, what, 6 miles? Around six, 7 miles. I ran with my wife, too, and she dusted me at the end. It's quite humbling. But five k's, ten k's, like, five k is around 3 miles. Ten k is around six, 7 miles. 1s So and shout out to Roy Chung. My brother my master my brother, he I know he ran a marathon a couple of years away, so he he said he died. Paul Song Young I know some people I've seen, and every time I see them, like, how do they like my after a ten kit, my knees are aching. I'm just old, by the way. Like Dana carvey joke. I'm so old, when I that when I take a nap, I wake up injured. That's what happens to me lately. But 1s this old Chinese man, he finished two marathons while chain smoking. 3s I don't know, marlborough should get him for a commercial or something. This guy's crazy, man. I don't know. 2s I don't know how to give him props or just don't do that, kids. 2s All right?

8.       Jo Koy

And today, each episode, I've been talking about someone I know. It's not always going to be like celebrities, but. 1s I'm like, Let me get all the celebrities out of the way first. And I realized, wow, I probably have 30, 40 people I could probably talk about. 3s I've either met them or know them, or I've hung out with them. And this one is my brother. I consider him a friend. And he is a rock star. Now, legitimate, there are people you call like, oh, yeah, they're stars. And then there's rock stars, like superstars. The elite of the elite. Like, top three comedian in the world right now, maybe one. He's selling out every arena. We're talking about 18,000 to 20,000 seat arenas, basketball arenas, sometimes multiple nights in each city, and he's going all over the world. And I first met him when he moved to La. He grew up in Seattle, then moved to Vegas. 1s His mom and his sisters, and he 2s and his brother, he talked about his brother recently in his podcast, and I didn't know about his brother until lately. 1s And then he moved to La. And when he moved to La, he hung out. I was running the Asian I laugh factory. He started doing it and talking about Joe Cole, the one and only Joe Koi. And we hung out. We actually hung out. We used to eat a Cape Town after my wife came out with us after, and. 2s He let me open for him when he started really doing somewhere bigger shows. And I remember when he did the Irvine improv, the Braya improv just packed, and I would gain a lot of Filipino followers. A lot of nurses started following no, but then it just became very multicultural, too. He does not just Filipinos, but definitely joe is the king of the Filipinos. 1s And I lived in the Philippines for four months, so I learned the culture and love it and respect it. And I just admire 1s his work ethic. And when he first came to La. And his grind, his focus, laser focus on stand up comedy. And he knew from a young age, when he went to see Eddie Murphy live using his mom's credit card without her knowing, went to go check him out, he just knew at a young age, 1s that's what I want to do. And since then. 1s This is why never give up, everyone. Never give up. It took him almost 30 years. 1s 30 years think about like, chopping a sycamore tree. And in the beginning, you're just take that axe and 2s you're just hacking away. And it looks impossible. 2s And while other people are just hacking away these skinny little trees, he was just focused. I'm focused on the sycamore tree, not sycamore sequoia, whatever 2s sticker. But he's just hacking away at it, right? Like with his axe. And at the beginning, you don't even have like a chainsaw or whatever. You just have a tiny little pickaxe. You don't even know what you're doing. You're just learning as you go along. Long and he's just 3s focused on his dream, like, I'm going to chop this tree down one day. And set by set, every set, every set, he want to stay just like chopping the tree. And he just keeps going and going and going. And I'm sure there's times when people were like, are you still doing that? I've gotten that too. When people go like, are you still doing that comedy thing? 2s And you got to, like, give them back a tight smile. You're like, yeah, I'm still doing it. And I want to say, hey, do you have a dream? Do you have a passion? Do you know what you want to do? But no, I don't say that. I just go, yeah, I'm still doing it. And 2s I just saw Joe just so focused and grinding, and 2s he got on Bet. He did showtime at Apollo and he would have these. Victor Reese. But I know he was frustrated too, because he was like, why can't I get my hour special, like, on Comedy Central? HBO Max. Or actually, he was on Comedy Central, but Netflix was the big one. Once Netflix came out and he had to fund it himself, they wouldn't put him on. He funded it himself, like, almost $100,000 and just went for broke his Live in Seattle one that first one that came on Netflix and then just basically begged him, like, just give it a chance, like, a week and see how it does. The rest is history. Now he has four Netflix specials on Netflix, and I think he signed for more. He's a private jet. My brother Joey Gila is opening for him. No one deserves a more man. Joey Gila one of the nicest guys, nicest comedians ever. We've been on tour before. We used to perform for the smallest shows. We did a show at Florida State University Tallahassee at a science lab where, like, 20 kids came out, and Joey Gila started the show. Like, you know you're blowing up when you can wash your hands while doing the comedy set. He's like, washing his hands in the sink. But yeah. Oh, Randall Park was with us there, too, and he's on his private jet now. I see him on Instagram. You guys see him? 1s Just traveling the world, man. He just did Australia. I think he's going to Singapore next. He's done, like, Dubai. He's performed for Princes and Kings and making millions. And more than that, he's close with his son. He's close with his ex wife, too, which is very mature. They co parent. And I remember holding baby, like Joe Jr. When he was a baby, joe used to live with his wife near 1s Howard Hughes. That one mall right there. La. People know, and you're the 405. And he lived in a little small apartment. I remember he's like, come over and I hung out with him and I held baby Joe Jr. And now he's 18. Joe bought him a Porsche or something like that. 1s And it just shows, like, when you stay focused on your dream, hard work and persistence equals dreams come true, 2s whatever it is. So just everybody have that passion, that dream, and go for it. Of course, it has to be realistic. If you have true friends, it'll tell you, like, oh, no, 1s yeah, you're talented in that they can't blow you up on something you're not good at. If you see American Idol, the auditions, you see these horrible singers. I don't know, their friends and the family lie to them or whatever. But if you have something that you know, like, oh, if I can practice at this every day, I know I can get better and better and better, then that's it. And if you love doing it, then go at that with all of your heart, soul in mind. And this podcast is helping me do that. It's helping me sort out my thoughts. Put you know, sometimes just saying comedy is just saying it the first time. Just or just thinking about it and writing it down and saying it. And once you say it, then it helps you formulate your thoughts.

Like, for example, I've been thinking about this thing. I remember at church. They talked about no heavy petting. 2s And 3s I would ask my friends that didn't grow up in church about and they're like, what are you talking about? I'm like, you never heard about that? 1s I guess outside of church, they call it first base, second base, third base, home run. But in church, they would say, like, light petting. 2s No. Light petting. I guess that's, like, under the shirt and heavy petting. You guys know? So they'll be like, oh, that's a big sin. Heavy, heavy petting. 3s I think I talked about this. Yeah. My first girlfriend, we only did light petting. Heavy petting. No. Home run. Yeah. Too much guilt. Save it for marriage. Which I did not. But we tried to. But, yeah, shout out to my brother Joe Coy. And right before he blew up blew up like, he was already blowing up. I think when that first 1s Netflix special came out, he had a tour bus, and he performed at Irvine Improv. And 2s he let me open for he said, PK, you want to come down and open for me? I'm like, yeah, brother, of course. Thank you. All these shows are sold out. 2s And after the show, the last show, he's like, hey, you want to go get cream barbecue? We'll take my tour bus, and I go, what 1s inside? I'm thinking, that's not very environmentally sound, bro. Like, my mind is going there, but 2s he beat me to it. He's like, yeah, I pay for this bus so prepaid, I got to use it anyways. And it has my billboards of me on both sides, so it's better for me to use it. I go, okay, that makes sense. And it's on the way home. 2s I wrote on his tour bus, this is how disciplined Joe is. I look at his fridge, and there's no alcohol. I'm like what? You don't have alcohol? Nothing? Or I think he had, like, one beer, and he let me have it. And then I talked to the tour bus driver, and he used to drive for, like, Motley Crue and things like that. He said they used to have crazy parties, but Joe is just very calm, and it was just like more like a business thing. It's like. 1s A billboard that goes all over the freeways and wherever he's parked. And so we rode up to Cape Town. And I've never had this kind of selfish prayer before, but I was like, God, please, when I get off this bus, 1s let people that I know see me get off this bus. 3s God answered my prayer. My selfish prayer we got right, you guys know here in La, that area in front of Chapman Plaza, between Cafe Blue and Quarters Barbecue, we went to go eat a quarters, but when I get off, man, we ran into the crew. Like, everybody was there. Like dumbfounded lyrics. 1s JL. Jessica Stafford man, the crew was out that night, I think. Alice 1s Martin and there was a whole crew. 1s Oh, yeah. Comedian Andrew. And we just. 1s I had a best time. We ate Korean barbecue and then we went to Cafe Blue. We actually went to this Kton after party at Yox's Pad in Kton at that time. 3s And it was amazing. It was like a very memorable, classic cape Town La. Night that I'm just almost thankful to experience those nights I filed those in my memory. That was amazing. The night that Joe Coy took me to get Korean barbecue on his tour bus after I opened for him. To a rock star, rock audience, crowd, and props to Joe. Joe takes pictures with everybody after. And another reason why he's so big. A tip for all of us in entertainment industry and myself, just the discipline and that grind of doing that as well. 1s And then that memory, man. Thank you, brother. I know you're probably not listening to this, but I really appreciate you for that and very happy for you. Very inspirational. Let's all get it. Everybody dream big. Let's work hard. Stay persistent, stay positive. If you're feeling down, just try to remember the happiest times of your life and try to really mentally go to that place, and hopefully you can feel a little better after that. All right? Love you. All peace. 4s
