The Lipstick Pickup Podcast with Emily Vardaman Walters
A lipstick pickup is an electric guitar pickup with a captivating sound and appearance that has a devoted cult following that grows with each passing year. True to their name, they were originally chrome lipstick tubes stuffed with magnets and electronics that were the inspired invention of Nathan Daniel, founder of Danelectro. Born from his genius instinct for innovation as well as his devotion to a "rigid cost control" philosophy, they were an essential component of the guitars that helped stoke an affordable rock-n-roll revolution.
The Lipstick Pickup Podcast is an amateur (but very inspired), unscripted, rarely edited conversation devoted to the entirety of the subject. Hosted by Emily Vardaman Walters, The Lipstick Pickup Podcast is a fan-friendly primer on the subject of Danelectro guitars and their impact on the history of popular music of all genres.

"Born in Cambria, California, Ray has been performing all her life. Playing her first shows at only 13 years old, by 16 she had formed the duo Ranchers for Peace with her father, songwriter Charles Duncan. After releasing her debut solo EP “This Road” in 2016, Ray moved to Nashville in 2019, where she now works as a background singer and freelance composer, in addition to performing as a solo artist. Ray also co-hosts podcast “Book of Jude,” which is a series of interviews with her mother, hit songwriter Jude Johnstone, that tells the story of Johnstone’s career in the music business.
In 2020 Ray formed R&B/swamp-rock duo New Daddy with songwriter Stefbbaby, and finished recording her EP “Break My Heart.” In 2022 Ranchers for Peace released their third EP titled “One Kind of Free,” and Ray released a new solo single “Don’t let it get to you.” On June 20th of 2023, Ray released her debut full length record, but with a twist. The twelve song collection titled “Under the Greenwood Tree” consists entirely of music Ray has composed for Shakespeare’s plays over the course of her career in sound design thus far, and now you can find it on all streaming platforms.
In October 2023, Ray was able to record her long anticipated project, aka the Laundromat EP, but is still in the process of raising enough funds for a proper release. Find out more here
After recording the Laundromat EP, Ray released a stand-alone single at the beginning of 2024, in collaboration with Nashville producer and guitarist Tristan McCoppin. The song is called “Her Town” and is available on all platforms."
