However, we will highlight the nuanced differences between the medical field (Dr. Heather- Addiction Physician) and those with the disease of addiction (Josh- Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist). Episodes will not only bring you the specifics of addiction including the neurobiology of addiction and how that translates into the 'real world' but they will also bring you interviews from individuals in early or long-term recovery, therapists, family members, friends, clergy, treatment providers and so much more! We would love to hear from you, whether you have a question, suggestion, recommendation, request or even if you'd like to be a guest on the show!

54. AA- The History and The Desire to Not Have Another
What is AA and how did it come to be such a universally accepted practice in finding recovery? Started in 1935 by a salesman/stockbroker and a doctor, AA (Alcoholics Anonymous- now broadly includes all substances and branches which we will discuss) can be found around the world with well over 2 million members who meet anonymously with one common goal, a desire to not have another drink/hit/bump/etc. In this episode, we will give you the history of AA, the basic tenants and ideas, and discuss how it has evolved over time (although not much). We will also note some of the 'critiques' and how the first 3 steps of the 12 steps can be more broadly applied. Celebrity highlight: Al Pacino.
