Indonesia Is Most Generous Country in Global Study

In the past month, have you helped a stranger, given money to charity, or volunteered your time? These are the three activities measured for the World Giving Index, a global study of generosity.

Organized by Charities Aid Foundation, the index is based on a survey of nearly 150,000 people, and ranks 142 countries according to how generous they are.

In 2023, Indonesia was found to be the world's most generous country for the sixth year in a row. Ukraine was the year's highest climber, reaching the number 2 position in the overall ranking.

In the ranking for each of the three activities, Jamaica came first for helping strangers, Myanmar came first for giving money to charity, and Liberia came first for volunteering time.

However, the index also shows the worst countries for each of these activities.

Japan was at the bottom of the list for helping strangers. Morocco came last for giving money, and Egypt was last for volunteering time. Poland was found to be the world's least generous country overall.

First published in 2010, the annual study has found that people around the world became more generous during the coronavirus pandemic, and that this increase in kindness has been maintained ever since.

The study also found that religious people are more generous than people who aren't religious, and immigrants tend to be more generous than people who live in their home country.

And it seems that people who are happier with their lives are more likely to give money to charity. Some of the world's happiest countries — like Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands and Iceland — were all in the top 10 for giving money.

But the good news is: the majority of people in the world are really quite generous. According to the study, 4.2 billion people — 72% of the world's adult population — gave money or time, or helped someone they didn't know!
