Hello and welcome back to another
episode of Holistic Happiness Club.
And today's episode is something that is very simple,
but it touches every one of our lives.
And the topic is the everyday energy drainers.
Simple things that drains a lot of our energy,
and we do them on a daily basis.
So if we can control a little bit of them
and we can save a lot of energy, and that
energy we can use to fuel our motivation, fuel our
passion, fuel the goal that we are working on, and
that that can put us on the path of success.
These energy drainers, they are
stopping us from growing.
So we will talk about them.
But before I start the topic of the
day, I want to say thank you.
Thank you so much for tuning
in to holistic happiness club.
And special thanks to those who tune
into holistic happiness club every single week.
Your investment of time into holistic happiness club, that is
the fuel that keeps me going, and that is the
fuel that asks me to pull out some more meaningful
content and give you some more and more value.
Because when you invest your time, it's my
duty, it's my responsibility, it's my dharma that
I give you the value of your time.
So I will always try, as I always have tried
in the past, to give you the best value of
the time that you invest in holistic happiness club.
All right, so a big, big thanks from the bottom
of my heart to every listener of holistic happiness club.
And without further delay, let's begin.
The topic of the day.
Hi, everyone.
My name is Akshay Tiwari.
I'm a holistic happiness coach, author of the book
named Ashar, and the founder of Holistic Happiness Club.
Holistic Happiness Club is the place
where we talk about happiness holistically.
We understand that happiness is
not a single faceted thing.
It's not a unidirectional thing.
It's a multifaceted thing.
It comprises, it connects everything that
is there in our life.
So it needs to be looked at holistically.
It needs to be looked at from a 360 degree perspective.
And that's what we try to
do in holistic happiness club.
More about holistic Happiness club and more about
me at the end of this episode.
But for now, enjoy the topic of the day.
Alright, so let's begin.
The topic of the day and the topic of the day
is everyday energy trainers that are stopping you from growing.
So the thing is that we do things on a daily basis.
There are certain things that we do on a daily
basis and that drains a lot of our energy.
And so we will look at those tasks. We will.
I have majorly categorized them in what category they
fall and what can be their possible solution.
We are not going to look for
the solution, very particularly in this episode.
I will create another episode.
The next episode will be about the solution,
what you can be doing instead of these.
These things that drains your energy.
In this episode, I am just going to point out
that these are the things that drains our energy. It.
It is to create more awareness about those things.
Alright, so let's begin.
And the first thing that drains our
energy, the term is called cognitive depletion.
In, in the term of neuroscience.
But we are not neuroscientists, so I
will break it down in simple terms.
So what is cognitive depletion?
So the thing is that then, when we are doing
some task that we do not like, we are.
When we are doing something that we do not like
very much, then our energy drains a lot faster, right?
So let's say.
Let's say I do not like playing football or
I do not like dancing in club, all right?
So if I will go to a club and, and I will
dance there for like half an hour, I will be feeling exhausted.
I will be feeling drained out.
And instead of me, a similar
person, a similar physically looking person.
If that person will go to club and
if that person likes dancing in the club,
after half an hour, he will feel recharged.
He will feel refreshed, because that
is something he likes doing.
On the contrary, when I am doing that, because I do
not like doing those things, I will be feeling drained.
Why does that happen?
And there is no simple answer for that.
That why does that happen?
There is no simple scientific explanation available.
There are possible theories.
One explanation is that when we do
things that we do not like, it
takes more effortful processing for our brain.
Our brain takes a lot of
effort in processing those tasks, alright?
And when our brain is taking a lot of
effort, it takes a lot of our energy.
And also the subjective experience of time.
When we do not like something, the perception of time,
we feel that we have spent a lot of time.
Simple example is waiting.
When you are waiting for a train or bus or for anyone.
So when you are waiting for something
to happen, time feels like that.
It has slowed down.
It is moving very, very slowly, right?
So, at that time.
So when, when there is a subjective experience of longing
of the time means when you are doing something which
you do not like, we feel that time has elongated.
Time is moving slowly.
So we feel the effort that we have put for
half an hour internally, it feels that we have put
the effort for like 1 hour or 2 hours.
So our energy gets expended in,
in that fashion, in that manner.
So that's one possible explanation.
So in simple terms, when we do not
like doing something, we drain our energy.
So what are those things that we should be watching?
We should be keeping an eye
to save ourselves from cognitive depletion.
So those things are people pleasing.
And when we are, so when we are doing something
for people pleasing for the sake that some other person
will get angry, or to save ourselves from that anger
of the other person, when we are doing something in
that regard, obviously we are not liking that particular task.
We are doing it for some other sake.
And when we are not liking that task,
it will fall under the category of cognitive
depletion and that will drain our energy.
So people pleasing drains our energy.
So, be aware that while it is okay, not 100%
okay, but sometime it is okay that you are trying
to be in good books of the other people, but
be aware that it is draining your energy.
The same kind of energy is the same energy that
you can use somewhere else and grow from there. Alright?
So make a right choice.
Make an, make an informed decision that when
you are doing something to please please someone,
how important that person is for you.
Not everybody is very important that you, that
you spend your important, very crucial and very
limited amount of energy to please that person.
Whereas you can use the same energy
in your passion, in your goal. Right.
Other things that fall into this category, when you are
under a fear, when you are, when you are having
doubts and when you are working under stress.
So these things, as I said, that these
things, obviously, nobody likes to be fearful.
Nobody, nobody likes to be, to have
to be having doubt about something.
Everybody likes to be certain.
And when there is a lot of stress, stress after,
after bar that a person can handle, if that kind
of stress is there for the person, obviously that task
will fall under the category of cognitive depletion.
So when you are working under fear, under
doubt, under stressful situation, be aware that it
is draining your energy much, much faster than
you can think of, alright?
So whenever possible, come, try to come out of
that fear, try to come out of that doubt,
be certain and try to manage your stress.
And in this podcast I have talked about a
lot of things that you can do to manage
your stress and fear and doubt also.
But yeah, in future also I will dedicate
few episode that how you can manage your
fear, how you can manage your doubts.
Also I have dedicated one episode about overthinking,
how you can stop overthinking about something.
So that overthinking things also falls under,
under the category of cognitive depletion. Alright?
So my point here is whenever you are doing anything that
you are not liking, whether you know it or not, it
is depleting your energy in a much faster fashion.
Alright?
So the major things are like people pleasing
fear and doubt and stress and overthinking, alright?
And I will link the, the episode in which I have
talked about how to stop overthinking in the show notes other
things, I will create an episode and maybe then I will
link, but you can keep an eye on holistic happiness club,
I will talk about those things as well.
So this was the first thing, cognitive depletion.
Second thing is very simple,
very, very common, it's dehydration.
So when we are not hydrated enough, when
we are not, then we have not drank
enough water, obviously we feel sort of energy.
We, we feel that we are lethargic, all right?
And we are tired.
Why does that happen?
Scientific explanations are available.
Because when you are dehydrated,
your blood volume shrinks.
It, it reduced.
It gets reduced.
And when there is less blood volume, your heart needs
to work a lot harder to pump the blood.
And that when the adequate amount of blood
does not reach to cells, the adequate amount
of nutrition does not reach to those cells.
And when they do not have this nutrition, the fuel
that they need to burn, they, of course all the
cells will feel that there is less energy. All right?
So when you are dehydrated, you will feel lethargic.
So it's very important in whichever condition, climate
condition you are, you need to hydrate yourself.
Of course, when you are in a cooler climate,
you need to drink a little less water. When in you are.
When, whenever, whenever you are in a hot climate,
you need to drink a little bit more water.
So let your body guide and let trust your wisdom.
Listen to your body.
Your body will give you the
cues when you are thirsty, alright?
A lot of people say that by the time
you feel thirsty, you are already very dehydrated.
I don't believe in that argument completely, because I feel
that if you are listening to your body, it will
tell you when you need the water, right?
The reason people say that by the time you
are feeling thirsty, you are already very dehydrated.
It is because we ignore the cues
that our body gives to us.
We ignore listening to our own body.
We are not in tuned with our own body.
So if you are in tune very well with your own body,
you will, you will be able to listen to your body.
When your body is asking for water.
And it's not a rocket science, it
does not take years of practice.
You can do it from do it from day one.
Like maybe you can set an alarm.
There are apps available for you that, that tells
you that now you need to drink water.
You can use those app not to drink water.
Or you can set and set a repetitive
alarm after every 1 hour or two hour.
However you feel like in, depending on in which
climate condition you are and what kind of lifestyle
you are living, if you are more physically active
then you might need more water. Alright?
So you can set those alarms.
And when that alarm goes off, you try
to feel, try to listen to yourself.
Are you really thirsty?
Do you really need water?
If you do, just take one sip
and see how you are feeling.
And even if you don't, just take a little
bit of sip, I mean half sip of the
water and see how you are feeling.
And then try to notice what were
you feeling before and after that sip.
Alright, so that will give you the cube within a day
or two you will start feeling when you are thirsty.
And when you are not thirsty,
you will not need any help.
That's my personal experience.
Your experience might be a little
bit different from, from me. Alright. Okay.
So these, that is the second thing. Dehydration.
I have told you two reason that why you feel
less energetically and more lethargic when you are dehydrated.
Because your blood volume shrinks.
And that when blood volume shrinks, the
nutrition transport to cells that gets hampered.
Other reasons are which are scientifically proven
that dehydration leads to electrolyte imbalance.
So we have this sodium, potassium and a
different kind of electrolyte in our body.
And they are very much needed in so many chemical processes
that are going, that are going on in our body.
And when that, when there is an
imbalance about those electrolyte, those chemical processing
inside our body that's get hampered.
And because of that we are
not able to produce more energy. Of course.
And also when we are dehydrated,
our cognitive function starts getting impaired.
Because of that, the perception
of effort gets increased.
So anytime when you are dehydrated.
When you are thirsty, you will feel that the task
that are simple, it will feel a lot more problematic
or lot more taxing on your body, right?
So walking, when you are energetic, when you, if it
is a good morning, it's like, like cool breeze is
blowing and if you are at the beach or something,
then walking will feel easy to you.
But when you are dehydrated, even in the same environment, you
will feel like you, you do not want to walk. Alright?
And as soon as you get water, within, within two
minutes, three minutes or five minutes, you will start feeling
that you have got your energy back and now you
can and you want to move a little bit more.
It is because the perception, because
dehydration changes our perception of effort.
Our perception gets impaired when we are dehydrated.
So that's also a reason when you are dehydrated, you
feel that you are less energetic and you are lethargic.
All right? Alright.
So this was reason number two. Okay.
And before I move on to the category number
three, I have a special request to all of

it can reach to more and more people.
That's the biggest help that you can do to me.
All right, so let's, now let's move to
the third thing that drains our energy.
So the third thing is clutter and mess.
If our environment in which we work or
live, it is cluttered and it is messy.
Things are all over the place, and it's not
organized, it's not tidy, it's not neat and clean.
That drains our energy without doing anything.
And why is that?
So we'll understand why is that?
The first reason that clutter and mess
drains your energy is cognitive overload. When there.
When there is no order, when there is no organization of
thing, then it feels like there is lot of work.
Nothing is in order, and it creates a perception inside
our head that nothing is because nothing is in order.
So there is a lot of effort that needs to be put in.
And when that perception seeps in, as we have,
as we know from the category number one, that
cognitive depletion, when there is cognitive overload, it leads
to the perception of cognitive depletion, because we get
into that mode, that this task is not pleasant,
because the things are all over the place.
And so whatever I'm going to
do, it will take more effort.
All right, so we start getting that dislike, and when
there is a dislike, our energy drains much faster. Okay.
And the second reason is physical discomfort.
Physical discomfort. How so?
When you are.
When we are not living in, like, jungles
or we do not have space, like.
Like kings, right? We.
Most of us are living in small apartments.
And if that is messy and cluttered, we
get less physical space to move around.
We get less physical space to work around that.
And when that space is constricted and to
move around things and move around physically, that
creates a discomfort, and that increases the perception
of effort in any given task, that, again,
will lead to cognitive depletion.
So when.
When there is a clutter and mess,
so you will feel that you are.
You are suffocated in a.
In a tiny space, and you will not feel that
there is an abundance of space for doing things.
And when that.
That, you know, that that thought seeps in, it
starts giving you, uh, that discomfort, and that leads
you to cognitive depletion, and that drains the energy.
The third reason that clutter and mass
drains your energy is decision fatigue.
So when there are so many things which needs to
be organized and when you add another thing that you
need to take a decision about, it creates.
I mean, your mind has a perception that
there are so many things already disorganized.
So it is like, you know, your mind will not
be able to focus on one particular thing because there
are so many things that needs your attention.
So when you are working on something and your notifications
for all that apps on your phone are open.
It is just an example.
So when all the apps start giving you notification that,
oh, hey, somebody has tagged you in this photo.
Hey, somebody has liked your photo.
Hey, you need to do this.
You need to do that.
All these apps, when they are
trying to grab your attention.
At the same time, if you are trying to
focus on something, it will be very difficult. Why?
Because everything else is trying
to grab your attention.
Similarly similar thing happens when there
is a clutter and mess.
Because every disorganized thing is trying
to grab your attention, alright?
And that is why it will create, it
will lead to disease and fatigue, all right?
And sometime, the reason number four,
sometime it is associated with negativity.
Or you can say it's a negative
association that we human tend to create
with disorganization and clutter and mess.
All right, what happens that sometime this
mass messy things, some unpleasant event in
our past that has happened.
Of course, those events most of the
time are cluttered and messy and disorganized.
There is no orientation, there is
no organization in those unpleasant event.
So this clutter, this mess sometime can get
associated within our brain with those unpleasant event.
And we will not get to know that, of
course, because it's all subconscious, if not all that.
Most of it is subconscious.
So that negative association also can
give you stress and anxiety.
And when that happens, we all know
that our energy drains much faster.
Okay, so this was the third thing, or the third
category of the thing that drains our energy much faster.
Now let's move to the last thing.
And there are four, two, three things that
extra are there that drains our energy. Energy.
So I have categorized them as miscellaneous.
So what are those things?
Number one under the miscellaneous thing is food.
So if you are not eating enough or you
are eating, eating too much of junk, if you
are not eating the right balanced food, and if
you are not eating enough, of course, then you
are not, you are depriving yourself of the vital
nutrients that your body needs to produce more energy.
And if you, I mean, it's like you are
not giving your body input to produce more output.
You are not giving the raw material that is
needed to produce a certain kind of product.
If you are not giving fuel to your
car, it will not run, of course, because
it, it cannot produce more energies.
It's a simple, simple thing.
If you are giving your car the wrong kind of
fuel, if it is adulterated or something, it will not
be able to function optimally because it will not be
able to produce that right, right kind of energy.
Same thing happens when you are not eating enough
or when you are not eating the right kind
of food, you are depleting yourself of fuel. Okay?
So that fuel is not there, then
how your body will produce more energy.
And of course, you will feel
lethargic, you will feel tired.
All right.
Second thing is overworking.
A lot of people get a lot of, get energy
burst when they start working, and that's perfectly fine.
When you start working, when you start taking
action, you feel good and you get a
lot of energy to move forward.
But at the same time, if you keep on
doing that, when you are working for long hours,
when you are stretching yourself, when you are not
taking any breaks, that also drains your energy.
And when you are working for
long hours, too many things accumulate.
Your space, mental space, I am talking about.
And that starts draining your energy as well.
So overworking leads to energy depletion.
The third thing under this category is no exercise.
Now, you might ask how exercise can give you energy.
It takes energy, right?
Well, it's not so simple.
In the world of biochemistry and
biology, not everything is mathematics.
Yes, exercise takes our energy, but at the same time,
when we do exercise, it helps us to take the
blood in each and every cell of our body, or
you can say maximum cells of our body.
It improves our cardiovascular health.
Our heart becomes more efficient in transporting the
nutrients and the oxygen in the blood.
So not the oxygen, sorry, blood, into other cells.
And when our heart is efficient, it
transports blood more efficiently to our cell.
That gives us energy.
And also.
And when we work out, when we
do exercise, we feel good about.
Good about ourselves.
Our brain releases dopamine, that
is a feel good hormone.
When we feel good, we feel energized.
We feel motivated to take on some more tasks. Right?
That's how exercise helps you feel more energetic.
And if you are not working out, if you
are not exercising, of course you will feel lethargic.
The fourth thing in this category
is not focused in the present.
So when you are not focused on the present
tasks, of course, either you are dwelling in the
past or you are thinking something about the future.
Both of the things are not happening in the present.
And when things are not happening, you are
either worrying about that, either worrying about the
past or you are worrying about the future,
that what will happen, how it will happen.
Or if some, if you are dwelling in the past,
then you are thinking why it has happened, why I
did not do it, that in that particular time.
So either in any situation, I can go on
talking about it in any situation, in a nutshell,
what you are doing is you are spending your
vital resource, which is time and energy, of course,
in something which is not happening right now.
And when you are doing that, I
mean, it is taking away your energy.
And when you want to do that, and also at
the same time, it is creating a mental clutter in
your head because you are thinking of too many things.
Past is endless, future is endless.
So you can think of so, so many things.
It will create a mental clutter in your head.
Whereas the present is very precise.
It is in this moment.
So whatever your priority in this moment is,
so you focus on that one thing.
And if you are not the clutter in
your mental space, that will deplete your energy.
And the last thing in
this category is unrealistic goals.
Again, it will go back to
the first one of cognitive depletion. How it.
How it happens when there are unrealistic goals that
you have set for yourself and when you start
working on them, you start seeing that it is
not achievable, you are not going to achieve it.
And when that happens that you start
feeling that you are not going to.
You are not going to achieve it.
You will not be able to achieve it. Then what happens?
Our mind starts giving the wrong signals. We start.
We start disliking the task that
we are doing subconsciously, obviously.
So when we are disliking the task that
we are doing because it is not giving
us the desired result, then again, we go
back to the first category of cognitive depletion.
So when we are disliking the task, of course it
will deplete our energy much, much faster than we think.
Alright, so this was the end of
the topic of the day, right?
So I have covered four, tried to cover four
things category or the things that we do on
a daily basis that drains our energy. Right? Please.
The end of the topic and before we end
