Charisse Henry 0:38
you tried to video record
Kristi Mayfield 0:40
so we can do it YouTube Yes.
Charisse Henry 0:42
And we were awful
Kristi Mayfield 0:45
oh my gosh, it was a talk no we were
Charisse Henry 0:50
so bad we watched it we were like oh yeah no
Kristi Mayfield 0:52
did I didn't know we deleted and we delete I was gonna say because it could almost be hilarious.
Charisse Henry 1:00
It's a blooper for sure. Because it was terrible.
Kristi Mayfield 1:03
It really was terrible. You
Charisse Henry 1:05
never notice how many times you make a face or not make a face or just how stiff like it was. Oh, you're welcome guys. We went to straight audio.
Kristi Mayfield 1:14
Exactly. And I have you know, I've had lots of people say hey, are you guys on YouTube? And I'm like it just haunts me. Memories that maybe now maybe
Charisse Henry 1:25
we're comfortable enough now I think we could put a camera up and probably not even notice it was there at this point after
Kristi Mayfield 1:31
one of these we could definitely do that
Charisse Henry 1:33
at least at least one exactly.
Kristi Mayfield 1:35
Well anyway, so today's episode is really we are just going to just kind of look back on the past year what was fun what episodes were challenging what we learned what we loved. And that's what we're gonna do.
Charisse Henry 1:48
Yeah, and Kristi brought me a tree.
Kristi Mayfield 1:51
Exactly.
Charisse Henry 1:52
New Zealand Tell me about it.
Kristi Mayfield 1:54
Well, I will but let's do our let's let our intro do its intro and then we'll be back in two seconds
Welcome to some women
Charisse Henry 2:08
chalk line.
Kristi Mayfield 2:09
I'm Christy your resident whiner, educator and blogger.
Charisse Henry 2:12
And I'm sure he's your street smarts service guru.
Kristi Mayfield 2:15
Join us each episode as we translate nerdy wine tips
Charisse Henry 2:20
into savvy one tricks real talk without all the fruits and fluff because some women salt brine.
Kristi Mayfield 2:29
So yes, Sharise I did bring you a treat. And I think we've covered it in several episodes where we talked especially to others in the wine industry and in interviews about our aha moment. And you know, mine was a actually a barber, Seville, Virginia Nebbiolo. random random. And what was your
Charisse Henry 2:50
I mean, much more common. Mine was New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, but it was Cloudy Bay, particularly or specifically that when I was waiting tables a long, long, long time ago, I got to taste and now cloudiway is like be
Kristi Mayfield 3:09
Yeah, it's typicity. Yes.
Charisse Henry 3:13
Saw me I'm long so who knew that my palate was great all along.
Kristi Mayfield 3:18
I know you're magical. So yes, so we absolutely when we were in New Zealand earlier this year, I had to go to Cloudy Bay because I couldn't come back empty handed and not bring you something from Cloudy Bay. But the particular Sauvignon Blanc that we're going to have today you cannot get outside of New Zealand. It is the 2021 to Coco that's te new word K O K. Oh, and since my nickname is Kiki, so to Coco. Anyway, so this is what we are going to drink while we walk our way through this episode. So without further ado, I'm going to spin the bottle or take the stelvin off and pour glasses. I'm so excited. I
Charisse Henry 4:05
love Love. Love. Yeah,
Kristi Mayfield 4:08
I've had this for a couple of months just waiting. Yes.
Charisse Henry 4:12
And here we are. Here we are a whole year
Kristi Mayfield 4:14
a whole year. So this was this is planned. I don't often plan but anyway, well let's dive on in. And so I'd love after the year what has been the most fun thing to you and then what has been the most challenging thing to you as we have been podcasters for me this.
Charisse Henry 4:36
Everything about it is fun. Like it's been fun the whole time we get to talk about something that we have in common as a passion, which I think is kind of a gift that you know, we get to this and we we've we've come up with a platform to to do this. The most challenging thing I think has been getting our schedules together because we're busy women and then coming up with New topics too, is kind of not the easiest thing. Sometimes Sometimes we kind of get in a rut of what we think about wine. And that's all we can think about. So it's been super fun. A little challenging, but it's been arrived. How about you? What's been the most fun thing that we've done? Well, I
Kristi Mayfield 5:18
mean, I think just when I run into people, and they kind of reflect on it, or tell me, they learned something, or, Hey, you guys are so hilarious. When you guys were doing XYZ, you know, it's fun to just listen to people have a great conversation about wine, learn something, but not feel stuff that you about, right. So to me, that's fun. Not that I'm saying that because it's like, you know, being in the spotlight, but I'm so passionate about one indication, but making it happen in a way where people just it break down, break down all of those barriers and inhibitions around being afraid of wine. Yeah.
Charisse Henry 5:56
So I mean, and that's why we're doing this. That's exactly what Yeah, exactly.
Kristi Mayfield 6:00
Well, and I would say, you know, the, the scheduling and also, learning some of the technologies has also been, you know, we did record an entire 45 minute episode when recording, and oh, by the way, we were drinking wine during the first round. So by the second round, we were great. It
Charisse Henry 6:23
was so much better. I think.
Kristi Mayfield 6:26
So yeah, just there's so much to that. And you know, I can't say enough to to our audience. Thanks for listening. Thanks for following but if I could just, you know, I mean, growing our audience is really hard. I mean, the social media influence SEO, all of those things are so true for podcasts as well. And, you know, we have made some marks and we are getting some recognition. Yeah. For the podcast.
Charisse Henry 6:51
People know, some, some song women. That's why, exactly.
Kristi Mayfield 6:58
But you know that so to me, those are it's kind of a mixed blessing. It's a challenge as well as being fun. So yeah,
Charisse Henry 7:05
I mean, but it's been a great year, and we've had some, we've got the opportunity to speak to some incredible people. Yes. So of those who was your favorite guest?
Kristi Mayfield 7:16
Oh, my gosh, that's such a I mean it. That's it? That's a really hard question, but I will say, and I think it's because the situation was so fun is when we had Weston Edson talking about both Montague and silver ghost and being live from Magnolia and having others in the room while we were doing the podcast and drinking the wines with us asking questions. To me. That was That was great. And Weston is just such a delight. Yeah. And he's so knowledgeable. And he's so humble. And you know, his curly hair and difficulties just darling. Her. So I mean, so that was just a really magical experience. The whole thing. And then of course, you know, I love we've talked to several really cool women in the winemaking industry from Benedict drying to know we've covered Lindsay Yeah, we've talked to some really cool, cool cats. Yeah,
Charisse Henry 8:16
it's been fun. Yeah, it's been so fun. I've really enjoyed getting to know the personalities behind some of these amazing wines that we get to partake in like, I mean, once you start to get to know a little bit more about who's behind the bottle, yeah, things start to really make sense. And I love being able to see a reflection of someone in their work.
Kristi Mayfield 8:42
I know that's, that's a great way of putting it and it reminds me of, you know, going back to New Zealand, I'm going to our first winery that we visited. It was wet jacket, and we had them on, I guess it was I think it was in March, but anyway a couple of months ago about it and in the the spirituality and their wines is like, it gives me goosebumps. And it's truly because every member of the team is so connected. It's the land, it's the sea. It's It's New Zealand, it's the fjords, and they're focused on conservation, and, you know, Greg hay the, to us, he's the mastermind behind it all. But when you actually look back at his history, I mean, I've listened to podcasts of his, where he was a guest, you know, like in 2017 He's a mastermind he is legendary that is but you sit down at a table with them. And you just he expresses his love for the land and his love for wine. That's amazing, you know, so he could be up here and he's just down here and
Charisse Henry 9:44
and that also I think makes a difference because those are the people that want to make sure that their wine is in the right places and exposed to the right people. And you know, just getting the right recognition and for what exactly it is, and that is what I mean by you get that passion in the bottle, you know you it kind of translates into their work. So I think it's been great. I can't pick a favorite. No, I
Kristi Mayfield 10:12
can't either. It's really cool, though. I mean, I like the way you describe that. Because, you know, it makes me really think and I think this is a key message, you know, to our audience, as well as, you know, the vision of the winemaker or the brand has to be really clear. And if they just want to produce 4500 cases, and keep it really small and but precise, and really specific to their vision, then that's what that's the story and that connectivity you get to have with that right? Or if they want to have 45,000 cases of their, you know, prime Sauvignon Blanc, right, that's theirs. You know, that's great, too, right? That's a whole different level of enjoyment, a whole different experience. But every single one, that's what the beauty of wine
Charisse Henry 11:00
and do you have to kind of start somewhere most people aren't going to tip top of the mountain when they first drink wine, right? Some people get to, fortunately, yeah, no, but a lot of people don't start there. So you kind of don't know how smooth the road is, if you've never hit any bumps, you know. So it's like, if you don't get if you don't taste bad wine. It's hard to know how gory wine can be.
Kristi Mayfield 11:27
Well, and then on the flip side of that, you know, you hold on to a bottle for a long time, or you're exposed to a really beautiful vintage, 20 year old something, you pop the cork and it's past its prime, you know, there, why there's highs
Charisse Henry 11:43
and lows wanting to live and breathe and product. It is. So speaking of that, also, we've I mean, winemakers, yes, we've done so many different episodes about so many different things. What would you say, was the hardest episode to record?
Kristi Mayfield 12:05
Oh, I mean, I still am haunted by our wine terms. Because we. I mean, it was it, you know, I mean, it's hard to look at so much data, and really find a way to be able to translate that in a way that that, you know, others gain value out of, right. We might have been a little over ambitious and how many we covered, but it's those are key topics that, you know, sometimes, you know, I just wrote a blog about French wine terms, and they're, you know, they get thrown around a lot. But do you really know what they mean? Right. So
Charisse Henry 12:37
and when you're using them, like do we use them? correctly? But that's something you have to consider. And terroir was a hard
Kristi Mayfield 12:49
terror. Oh, yeah. Okay. Yeah, I guess I got
Charisse Henry 12:54
terroir was I mean, and not just because there are so many similarities in a lot of the different terroir. And it just gets so intricate depending on where geographically we're actually talking about the soil. Yeah. So it's just like, yeah, you're like sandy loam. And you know, she's there and cook area soil. Yeah. Yeah. So there's, like that added, added, added. So how do you make somebody want to listen to that?
Kristi Mayfield 13:28
Well, and on top of that, I mean, you know, you you talk to one segment of the wine industry, and they don't even want to talk terroir. And they're like, Well, you know, they want to talk this the specifics about the influence of like, one element, the, you know, climate, or soil or water or and there's, there's a lot of truth to that. And then you know, terroir kind of tries to bundle it all into one and even flora and fauna and winemaking traditions are bundled into that. Right. So, you know, it's one of those tricky, tricky buzzwords. Yeah. Yeah.
Charisse Henry 14:02
That I mean, we we know that we went over a lot of those tricky buzzwords in our wine terms. To get you guys ready, yeah. You guys are ready for terroir. And it's like, I don't know. But those were those were both challenges
Kristi Mayfield 14:20
that one yeah, that's definitely I mean, the world of wine is so complex. And you know, I always tell people I'm like, you know, it's we don't get super excited about deep diving into our orange juice or our milk ever, but we definitely get pretentious and snooty over a glass of wine.
Charisse Henry 14:38
And but the thing about it is if so, if someone came to your house with milk that they made, or that they made that would be are milk that you know that they from the cow fresh from the cow. Yeah. And they wanted to come and tell you the lineage of the cow and the grass is the Yeah, the grass they ate the way that the grass was fed. Because the water source of your of the, the grass and it's like and how how the milk was expressed? Yeah. And how many times it was filtered? How many times it was pasteurized or apt for at all? How interested would you be, you know, and it's like, we do that every day with wine. And it might just be us, we might just be the nerds, and you who are listening, but it's like, everything has a story. Luckily, we get to talk about something that has a beautiful story becomes a beautiful, like, very sought after product. And it makes
Kristi Mayfield 15:44
you feel good. Yeah. And again, I love how you always say, there's nothing sexier than a bottle and a glass of wine on a table and nothing, you know, nothing. And I can still do you know, like all every once in a while we'll go someplace cool. I'll order you know, a cocktail and get excited about it. And to me, cocktails are very situational. I mean went to Grand Cayman recently had had a glass of rum or anything with rum in it for years. And man, every single day, happier a round, we're in the pool, and I'm drinking rum. We're eating grilled seafood right on the beach and a little hut. And it just, you know, a glass of wine was not appropriate for that. But as soon as I got home I haven't touched from since I go right back to my Yeah, to your home. My pride and joy. Yes. I love it. So speaking of wines, has there been a standout? We've consumed 12345 or more bottles on this? Just a few just a few. No, we've done it all in the name of educating Lily this is we are not selfish. Here. We are.
Charisse Henry 16:49
Absolute Absolutely.
Kristi Mayfield 16:50
But what has been I mean, because I know I throw a lot of strange stuff at you what's what's been? What might stand out as kind of either the weirdest or the most unexpected. So
Charisse Henry 17:01
I think they're one in the same for me. It was whatever. And now I can't remember because I cannot remember how to pronounce this
Kristi Mayfield 17:09
country a great Yes. The grape with the Pope. And that was a deep, deep deep like fuchsia Rosae out of Yep. Yeah, that one. Yes.
Charisse Henry 17:19
That was actually it was. I was about to say it was from somewhere in the Midwest, right minutes. Don't Minnesota. Yeah, that was the most interesting, surprising and beautiful wine that I think that. I mean, I was like, Okay, what is this? Never heard of it? Yeah. What do you mean that grapes have like a red or a pink pole? Like, I did not know that. And there's
Kristi Mayfield 17:47
so few of them. And the fact that that's what that was? I was like, in love with that.
Charisse Henry 17:52
And the wine was beautiful was good. Yeah. So that. That was probably that was probably my favorite and most unassuming surprise this year, when it comes to wine. Yeah, that one. How about yours?
Kristi Mayfield 18:09
No, that one was really fun. I will say just because I loved the process in which it was made. And I really felt like it had so many nuances going back to terroir like it was almost like I could taste the field flowers but it was that Emma the pink women because it was that random field blend. And it was why I mean I literally felt like you were picnicking in the middle of a field of flowers with some grape vines interspersed to me that had that one just that one had such a sense of place yeah to me having
Charisse Henry 18:48
been you're exactly right it was a field plan and it was it it is a natural wine so like little to no sulfur unfiltered unfined this cloudy yes and it but it Pink Lemonade was the best name for that why? No, that was me it makes my mouth water thinking about it. I know good Yeah, yeah.
Kristi Mayfield 19:09
And we did that on our Rosae episodes so we had like some really I mean from the perspective of well think of maybe like the light pale pink prolonged sorrows a great summer wines but we had some really packed with a punch and you know, juicy, unctuous rose easy
Charisse Henry 19:29
we have throughout these episodes. It's funny that we both picked a rose and that like if you are not outside and if you listen to us, those are not our favorite varietals. So for us to have both found something off the beaten path. That's something that we probably wouldn't have picked up ever. I know I would have never picked up a tutorial because why I didn't know what it was. You know, I
Kristi Mayfield 19:52
probably just profess the episode before all grapes have white pool right?
Charisse Henry 19:57
I have I have probably definitely done that, you know. So it's like, I mean, and I love the fact that this is not just education for the people who are listening to us. This has been so educational for me, I've gotten an opportunity to learn a lot about, you know, processes and, and just kind of deep dive into some things that I probably wouldn't have. Because I'm like, Ah, no enough.
Kristi Mayfield 20:21
And again, I think there's the other beauty on the wine education side is I know it no matter how much I study how much I you know, how many certifications I may try to pass. The next vintage is going to come out. And it's almost like starting over it. I mean, wine is Groundhog's Day, it's like every season you wake up, and you get to two harvests a year because you've got south of the equator and north of the right or so each hemisphere has a separate harvest. So Holy cow, how can you and so that yay, me, I'll never know everything, and
Charisse Henry 20:58
you just keep drinking. And the best thing about not knowing everything is knowing that you'll never know everything. So.
Kristi Mayfield 21:06
So yeah, I don't even have to, like make it a little easier
Charisse Henry 21:09
to
Kristi Mayfield 21:10
stress out about it. Yeah, it's not like a finite that. That's so fun. Has there been a wine that you thought, hey, this I'm so excited about? And it just didn't meet? Your expectations? I'm trying to I mean, that's a random question, because I'm trying to think the same way.
Charisse Henry 21:28
I don't know. I don't know if I had any Womp womp wine? Because that's what I call them when you you know, yeah, it's a great one. Well, yeah, exactly. It's like, you know, you're like, oh, man, this is, I can't wait. And then you get it in glass. And you're like,
Kristi Mayfield 21:47
I can't think that I've had any I mean, you know, there have been some that have, you know, haven't necessarily been my favorite, but I feel like I've appreciated them for what they were.
Charisse Henry 21:55
And I think we've done a good job of picking things or trying ones that are varietally. Correct. And or if they aren't, they have some something behind them story behind them that makes them you know, yeah, just that just that good. You know, and I don't know that we've tried anything that one of us hasn't tried before.
Kristi Mayfield 22:18
How that's a good thing. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, probably at least in in a tasting or has been, you know, shared somehow, someway. Yeah. Because every once in a while, I'll try to throw in something, you're way more adventurous than I am? Well, because the wherever I travel, you know, I'm gonna pick something. Yeah. Even if, you know, even if it may be a gas station on the side of the road in New Mexico, if they have a unique wine I'm gonna bring it? Well, you know, I do. I mean, to, as we were talking about earlier, you know, everyone kind of starts off as at a certain, you know, maybe it's Chardonnay, Cabernet. And maybe it's something you know, bigger brands you can buy on any grocery store shelf, or whatever. I mean, nothing wrong. That's a great starting point. And then, you know, you do Elevate, sometimes you get the privilege of tasting something very rare or unique. But, I mean, I still love to come back to something from, you know, like a daily drink. And I mean, I'll go to, I'll go to Trader Joe's, and they have a unique variety. Well, why not try it? Because,
Charisse Henry 23:18
and it's in a price range that you are literally like, why not? Which is I think, I think, once again, is the point of what we're trying to do, what we're doing here is just open up, like, open your horizons a little bit, just just open up just a little bit enough to get out and try something new. So favorite episode that we've done.
Kristi Mayfield 23:43
Oh, my, my, my, my, I mean, I really think probably some of my favorites are when we pick a theme like summer white wine, when we did Rosae. We did tillable reds, where we're really just kind of covering a broad range of kind of a style or a segment, just to see how much variety and how exciting it can be to put one next to the other. I mean, and I think those those also seem to be really popular with you, our listeners, because we do get a lot of traction and a lot of downloads on on those episodes. Yeah,
Charisse Henry 24:18
I think people are always wanting to know, what should I try other than what I'm already drinking?
Kristi Mayfield 24:24
Yeah. Yeah. And I do love. I mean, again, going back to winemakers and you know, we the breadth of winemakers, we've talked to from you know, Benedict Bryan and who was one of our very first episodes on women in wine. And then we've had Russell Bevan on a couple of times and Weston on a couple of times and murraya on and Wednesday and you know, just I do love they are so privileged to live the lives that they live Yeah, you know, and walk vineyards whether that's at harvest or with the farmers or just whenever, you know looking at are we pruning during the winter correctly to get the yields and the harvest we want for next year. I mean, I just so some people like fan Google movie star,
Charisse Henry 25:13
Uber, a musician, a musician, not me. It's winemaker
Kristi Mayfield 25:18
winemakers. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Pretty simple. They are. The background noise we have
Charisse Henry 25:25
just English nation. We have loved dogs. Let's see favorite episode. I think I think my favorite episode might have been. I mean, I don't want to say bubbles. Oh, well wait, because that's kind of a given. But
Kristi Mayfield 25:49
it's a common theme that keeps popping back.
Charisse Henry 25:53
Because I'm always it's always bubbles for me. But I don't know. I don't know that that was my favorite. I really enjoyed recording the the summer whites the other summer whites in the winter whites episode. I do. I think those were really cool. Yeah, both of them. Because I'm always looking for an alternative. Yeah, I really am always looking for that new variety. And I have a lot of people ask me, you know, oh, you know, I like Pinot Grigio and I'm kind of tired of it. Yeah, I was looking to get some I'm looking to get something a little different. I'm looking for something, you know, a little bit off the beaten path. I don't really want to keep drinking the same thing. But you don't want to shock anybody's count. Yeah. I mean, if you liked it, I know what you liked. So let's just go a little step in this direction or that direction. Yeah, I think just being able to guide people into their new next thing is, yeah, really? Chill. Reds was great, too. I'm trying to think if there's anything any was there any other episode that I loved? Yeah, I did enjoy being in the store. Chris keel. That was cool.
Kristi Mayfield 27:05
Oh, yeah. And I mean, Italian wines in general, we could probably do an entire year and never cover all the Italian. I mean, I read articles every day. And I'm like, I have never heard of that.
Charisse Henry 27:16
I've never heard of Never. Never. I mean, there's so many different I mean, there's so many varietals that I've never had. That sounds like an episode.
Kristi Mayfield 27:24
Well, that sounds like an episode. Or maybe we need to take this episode on the road. We should we shouldn't wait. I think we should I mean, I mean, I don't see any way
Charisse Henry 27:33
you know what my favorite episode was? When did we bottle it Valley meals? Are we recording them?
Kristi Mayfield 27:40
I don't think no, we're not. That
Charisse Henry 27:42
was just our favorite. My favorite adventure. It was.
Kristi Mayfield 27:46
For those of you who are who might not know. So, Valley Mills, vineyards and valley Mills, Texas. I mean, they're not even in an ABA. They're outside of Waco. I love what they do. Joey bagnasco is doing some great things. The team there Sarah and the others are just magical. And I drugged Sharif down with kind of a she was looking for a lot well. And when I was well, the hotel was a Walt Walt law because there's nothing out there that they had, actually the Ritz Carlton,
Charisse Henry 28:20
whatever I know you treat me well.
