For our season one finale of Cove Podcast. We threw a big rap party virtual rap party on our YouTube channel, covetubecom. It was a two and a half hour event. Our friends joined us, we had games, trivia, music. It was a really great time. I edited it down for the sake of the audio version of the podcast episode 40, the season one finale. Version of the podcast episode 40, the season one finale, and so you're going to hear the edited version here. But if you want to check out the live event, I encourage you to join our Patreon cove community. You will become a member and get access to all of the previous live recordings of the shows so you get to see all the unedited versions. If there's any of your favorite episodes you want to see if there's some stuff you missed that, hit the cutting room floor, head over to patreoncom slash cove podcast and see how you can help the show continue to go and continue to grow. Here's the season finale you to grow.

Speaker 2:

Here's the season finale. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Carganella Online Variety Entertainment Podcast. Here's your host, Paul Carganella.

Speaker 1:

Hello and welcome to Cove. This is the online variety show in which we aim to both entertain and inspire both our podcast listeners and YouTube viewers with a variety of entertainment offerings, including music, storytelling, poetry, travel blogs, special guest interviews, dramatic readings. Travel blogs, special guest interviews, dramatic readings and I always say so much more, but I don't know how much more there is than that, and I've been saying that for a whole season so far. Welcome. This is the season one finale. We've got friends here. I've got some trivia and fun games ready for us all to play. Uh, thank you all so much for being here. I see you in the youtube chat. We've got so many friends, some patreon curators and supporters. Uh, cast members and gosh, we're gonna have some fun tonight. We got so much planned and we're going to, of course, be joined by a few special guests this evening, but before we introduce them, let's, of course, bring the cart in front of the horse and say hello to our producer, producer craig jackman. Hello, craig.

Speaker 3:

Welcome hey, paul and everybody gosh. Season one finale can you oh? My gosh, wow, and it. It's been an amazing season, there's no question about it. All the variety of people who've joined us during this season and the talent, all the things that we got to know about people and yeah, it's, and you know what? Okay, when these shows come out, I enjoy listening to them top to bottom when I'm doing my workout in the mornings. Yeah, and it's so neat and it's like a companion.

Speaker 1:

That was my goal from the beginning was to be like you know, and it's tough getting a show out like a weekly show out, but I wanted to have something that you could count on being there when you're doing your routine, whether you've been walking a lot lately or if I'm doing chores around the house. The kids are at school and I can ask Alexa to put something on. I hope it didn't activate.

Speaker 3:

I know I got to keep an eye on her too.

Speaker 1:

We're on every podcast platform at like it. Just search Cove pod and uh, youtube, of course, on Cove pod. Or just, um, uh, go to cove tubecom, and anytime you're you're thinking, gosh, I'd love to listen to something. I had something entertaining and inspiring. Hopefully this is something that you can bring with you and you know I'd love it. Like, best dream scenario for me is that you listen to it every week. But um, I, I just love that if, even if you don't, you can scroll down and just read the menu of episodes and pick one just based on what you, what you're feeling like. I don't know if you're feeling like listening to an author or a director, an actor, a storyteller, it's all there. Oh yeah, just based on your mood, you can just pick an episode and jump in and hopefully be entertained and inspired.

Speaker 3:

And you know what? Every single time it's something to look forward to. It really is.

Speaker 1:

I hope so. Well, thank you, craig, and thank you for being such a big part of it. Everybody at home give it up for Craig Jackman. I appreciate you for for being there all all the steps of the way. And uh, we're gonna, we're gonna celebrate this season with uh, some friends that, of course, we've introduced throughout the the this first season here, and let's, let's bring a couple of them in. I know we'll they'll be trickling in as we progress throughout the evening. I've got so much fun planned. But uh, let's invite in our friends amanda benjamin, host of amanda on demand every wednesday-ish night on the vodacity network, and, uh, her hubby, mr david benjamin, host of the panama man, every other tuesday night on the vodacity network. So good to see you both.

Speaker 1:

And David, you're a special addition. This evening. We lost Wendy Walker, who actually got an awesome live gig, but we gained a David Benjamin, so that's so much fun. David's been panano manning every other Tuesday night for gosh, how long now.

Speaker 6:

I'm I think I'm getting close to 70 shows now. Oh, my goodness, that in the upper sixties.

Speaker 1:

We're about to go into production for season two of our podcast that we co-host, magical mystery hour. You can imagine whether it's conspiracies, aliens, bigfoot. We cover all of the things time travel and all of it. So find the Magical Mystery Hour, the magical mystery hour. We also drop in some, some live music and some record a recorded duet every other episode of the podcast, but every episode of the live stream, uh, so find that we're in.

Speaker 1:

As I mentioned, we're about to go into production of season two of that, so make sure you find that and, um, jump into every miss magical mystery hour that you can. So tonight we've got music, we've got poetry, we've got storytelling and so much more. Our other special guests are here, so we got to bring them in for this. Ladies and gentlemen, please give it up for Mike and Nicole Pierce. Welcome to the show, hey thank you Thank you Congratulations.

Speaker 8:

so I am going with a brand new song from queen b beyonce, who is now becoming a country star. Evidently what just released a song called texas hold'em came out a couple weeks ago and I don't know. Just heard it. At first I thought it was kind of funny, and then it just stuck with me and now I've been obsessing over it for the last few days and now we're forcing Benjamin to sing it.

Speaker 5:

Yes, oh wow, I am in love with this already.

Speaker 1:

Speaker 6:

The wheel off. What can I say?

Speaker 1:

oh goodness. Based on the season finale this evening, what did you choose to perform and why?

Speaker 7:

okay. So I didn't choose a song based on the finale. I just chose a current song that's catchy and that I've been playing a lot lately. Um, it's called flowers by miley cyrus, won a grammy and uh yeah, so you guys probably have heard it.

Speaker 1:

Awesome. No, we can't wait to hear it. Ladies, probably not.

Speaker 7:

Gentlemen, Now you get to hear it, David.

Speaker 3:

Only if it was by Mozart, cyrus, right Now you get to be educated, David.

Speaker 1:

Performing Miley Cyrus' Flowers live here on the show. Here's Nicole Pierce.

Speaker 4:

Thank you. Let me just see one thing, okay, we were good.

Speaker 9:

We were gold, the kind of dream that can't be sold. We were right till we weren't Built a home and watched it burn. I didn't want to leave. You Didn't want to leave. You didn't want to lie, started to cry. Then remembered I, I can buy myself flowers, write my name in the sand, talk to myself for hours. I can love myself for hours. Say things you don't understand. I can take myself dancing. I can hold my own hand. Yeah, I can love me better than you can. I can love me better. I can love me better. Baby, I can love me better. I can love me better. Baby Can love me better. I can love me better, baby. Paint my nails cherry red, match the roses that you left.

Speaker 9:

No remorse, no regret. I forgive every word you said oh, I didn't want to leave. You Didn't want to fight, started to cry. Then remembered I, I can buy myself flowers, write my name in the sand. Talk to myself for hours. Say things you don't understand. I can take myself dancing and I can hold my own hand. Yeah, I can love me better than you can Can love me better. I can love me better. I can't love me better. Baby Can't love me better. I can't love me better. Baby Can't love me better. I can't love me better, baby Can't love me better. I, oh, I didn't wanna leave you Didn't wanna fight, started to cry but then remembered I, I can buy myself flowers, write my name in the sand, talk to myself for hours. Yeah, say things you don't understand. I can take myself dancing and I can hold my own hand. Yeah, I can love me better than yeah, I can love me better than you can Can't know me better. I can't know me better. Baby Can't know me better. I can't know me better, baby.

Speaker 4:

Can't know me better. I can't know me better, baby Can't love me better, baby you can love me better.

Speaker 3:

I can love me better, baby, you can love me better, beautiful.

Speaker 6:

I quote a kid from the Incredibles that was totally wicked.

Speaker 3:

And you got a damn girl from Joe Warren.

Speaker 10:

Thank you, Joe Warren.

Speaker 1:

Better than the original for sure. So good Pierce's. Wow, I miss you guys. It's so good to see you and hear you and you're just so freaking amazing.

Speaker 7:

You are so freaking amazing. I can't believe season one has already come to an end. Like that's a lot of work and I mean I have so many questions about your whole process.

Speaker 1:

It's amazing I'd love to answer them for you.

Speaker 5:

Okay, you know your verb is still on, just so you know if that's thank you.

Speaker 6:

I don't want to follow that and having said that, now I'm there are three craig slices on the list I'm a little worried, I know well, I don't know.

Speaker 3:

On deep cuts, usually I'm ending up last I I know.

Speaker 1:

True, let's talk about it. All right, that one, if anybody out there wants to say thank you to our performers this evening. Sorry, david, I didn't know you were going to be on the show. It's the same as mine, oh yeah.

Speaker 3:

Well, I did fix that.

Speaker 1:

Oh Wow, adapting on the go On the fly.

Speaker 7:

On the fly. Producer Craig.

Speaker 5:

That's why he wears the producer hat.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, boom. If you're listening either live or whenever you hear or see this episode on the YouTubes and you think I'd love to leave that performer a tip because I was inspired or entertained in some way, of course it's just like a tip jar. If you are out at dinner and you're walking down the street and you heard an amazing performer and you want to say thank you, here are the Venmo tip jars right here on the screen of the YouTube broadcast of each performer on the show here this evening. Of course we appreciate you being here watching the show and every broadcast over YouTube is free to enjoy. But if you want to give a little extra thanks to any performer who has piqued your interest this evening or just entertain you enough to you know want to say an extra little extra thank you, there are ways to do that right there in the Venmo tip jar. We thank you so much. All right, let's see what the wheel has in store for us next as it's dwindling down. Are the last three going to be Craig?

Speaker 3:

I think they might be us next, as it's dwindling down are the last three going to be craig?

Speaker 1:

I think they might be well. David's still on the wheel and amanda and amanda is still on the wheel, all of the first ones, where all of the trivia that all of the games happened first and all the craigs are gonna happen oh my, he cut vibes here we're on track. As you and I have experienced the season finale of Magical Mystery Hour and you will probably never experience the season finale of Amanda on Demand, I don't know man.

Speaker 4:

That's like.

Speaker 1:

Preparing for tonight. What song selection popped into your head? I don't know, man, that's like ugh. Preparing for tonight.

Speaker 5:

What song selection did you popped into your head. I was having a hard time. I was like I don't know what I'm going to do. It took me until today.

Speaker 5:

I was trying to think about it and because we were, you know, over chat somebody was I forget it was Nicole or somebody was like, well, like, was there a theme? I was I forget it was Nicole. Or somebody was like, well, like, was there a theme? I was like it's the end of the season, you know something, the end of the season-ish. And I was like okay, and I so I started thinking about like, well, like, what are things that I connect to in the cove? And, um, you know, I was just thinking about how many different like artists you've had on and talking about their stories and their truths. And then, um, I just started thinking about like how and I am going through this right now. It's funny.

Speaker 5:

And then I also had a message from Bobby Kirby today and I was telling him how I've written a few songs and I'm having a hard time thinking about recording them, cause I said, you know, the perfectionism and anxiety sets in and he's like man, just like, just do it. He's like it's perfect at the moment, and then you can change whatever you want later. He's like put your stuff out there. And so it just had me thinking about how we, as artists, have all these little demons in us that we have to fight every day. And then I was like, ah, that's it, it's Fight Song.

Speaker 1:

Yes, and who was the original artist?

Speaker 5:

That's Rachel Platt I love it.

Speaker 1:

I love the song. I can't wait to hear you perform it. Ladies and gentlemen, here's Amanda Benjamin with Fight Song Into motion like how a single word could make a heart open.

Speaker 10:

I might only have one match, but I can make an explosion.

Speaker 10:

And all those things I didn't say were wrecking balls inside my brain. I will scream them loud tonight. Can you hear my voice this time? This is my fight song. Take back my life song. Prove I'm a right. Song. My power's turned on, starting right now. I'll be strong. I'll play my fight song and I don't really care if nobody else believes, cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me, losing friends, I'm chasing sleep and everybody's worried about me. I'm in too deep, say I'm in too deep. It's been two years. I miss my home. There's a fire burning in my soul. I still believe. Yeah, I still believe. And all those things I didn't say? I still believe. Yeah, I still believe.

Speaker 10:

And all those things I didn't say were wrecking balls inside my brain. I will scream them loud tonight. Can you hear my voice this time? This is my fight song. Take back my life song. Prove I'm alright. Song back my life song. Prove I'm alright. Song. My power's turned on, starting right now. I'll be strong. I'll play my fight song and I don't really care if nobody else believes. Nobody else believes, cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me. A lot of fight left in me, like a small boat on the ocean sending big waves into motion, like how a single word can make a heart open. I might only have one match, but I can make an explosion. This is my fight song. Take back my life. Song Prove I'm alright. Song my power's turned on. Starting right now, I'll be strong. I'll play my fight song. Strong, I'll play my fight song. And I don't really care if nobody else believes, cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me.

Speaker 7:

Yeah, I've still got a lot of fight left in me, so beautiful.

Speaker 1:

I was trying to hit applause but I had moved away to try to find the hold music from the thing previous. But oh my gosh, ladies and and gentlemen give it up for amanda amazing if you're just experiencing it for the first time. She does a weekly show on the Vodacity Network YouTube channel and Amanda on Demand every Wednesday night. We will talk about it in full.

Speaker 1:

But of course she's also my co-host on the Magical Mystery Hour, so find us there if you are a fan of podcasts and a fan of mysteries and all of the things. We'll be launching season two very soon. Amanda, great job.

Speaker 5:

Thank you.

Speaker 1:

Well, the wheel is hungry.

Speaker 5:

It is.

Speaker 1:

It's feeding it your sacrifices.

Speaker 5:

I know Be ready, David.

Speaker 3:

It's a three to one. Oh my gosh.

Speaker 6:

I'm feeling myself. It's going to be me.

Speaker 7:

Craig? What is going on? Please be David, please be me, I know. I just want it to happen now. Will David beat up Craig for the final spot? I want back to back Craig.

Speaker 5:

Okay, well, it still could be back to back Craig.

Speaker 1:

Bonus.

Speaker 1:

Here's the thing Throughout the season season one Craig has brought poems to each episode that he's been able to produce as an episode producer and sometimes, based on just the conversations that I have with our guests, his poetry hits the cutting room floor. Because I try to keep up each episode under an hour and I said, you know, I want to find a chance for each performance and each interpretation from Craig to actually, you know, be put out into the world and for people to see it. So I wanted to share it because he does. He does a masterful job, as always.

Speaker 3:

Thank you, but I felt this poem kind of takes the whole thing about vulnerability, being yourself and sharing it with others and having others join you.

Speaker 1:

Yes, all right, can't wait to hear it yourself and sharing it with others and having others join you. Yes, all right, can't wait to hear it. Ladies and gentlemen here, is.

Speaker 3:

She touched the water by a spring-fed river. She had a special gift to deliver, releasing the inspiration from deep within her. She said Drink, please. Witness about saint and sinner. Surrender your mind, become a true believer. The line between real and fantasy, you can make it thinner.

Speaker 3:

So, with my cupped hands, I began to deeply drink. Muted grays became a vibrant pink drink. Muted grays became a vibrant pink. Thoughts and ideas were transformed into ink. It was all so fantastic, those things I could think. She said write them all down or they'll be gone in a blink.

Speaker 3:

Not all thoughts were happy, some, they made my heart sink. The more I drank, the more I was elated. Oh, how easily I concentrated Ideas, expressed, tales of wonder, consecrated Secretly. I craved being congratulated. What was felt, what was written, felt solid, those things I created. Wise, wonderful words, emotionally weighted, wanting more and more. I couldn't be sated.

Speaker 3:

My magical muse began to worry about me, who I was or might soon be. She said I must share this burden to set you free. So next to the river she planted flowers and trees. Other poets coming abated my dis-ease. She told them drink from the river as much as you please. If you don't, I will cause it to freeze Our muse whispered loudly. Poets, take your words near and far. Be true, kind and vulnerable. Let people know who you are. Hide messages in bottles. Transport people to a distant star. Sing from the rooftops. Tell limericks in a bar Poetry is music. Play tunes on a guitar. Shine bright like a firefly that escaped from its jar. Together we have a community being with the rare few who share our lunacy, the ones able to decipher these things that we see. For us, it's a river, this place we love to be. Gardens free of enemies, green grass, rivers and trees. We gather by the shore like birds and bees. You're welcome to join us. Stay for as long as you please.

Speaker 7:

So great.

Speaker 1:

Love that and let's see if the wheel, or what order the wheel, wants to hear the next one.

Speaker 5:

It has a plan.

Speaker 6:

Being awful slow about revealing it. I know it's me.

Speaker 3:

It's a David Okay.

Speaker 5:

We will get back to that Craig's at the end.

Speaker 1:

What sprang into mind for you to perform?

Speaker 6:

Well, it took a little bit of thinking, but then I thought you know what the cove starts with a C and a cove encloses part of the C, so it's only fitting that I play a couple of short selections in the key of C, and this is the finale episode. Both of these pieces I wrote in a program called Finale.

Speaker 7:

Could it be any more?

Speaker 3:

I'm not making this up. So these are David originals.

Speaker 6:

Yes, and I also thought that the very different characters of each of these is kind of a good reflection of the variety that paul has had in his cove episodes over the course of 36 episodes amazing.

Speaker 1:

Well, so can't wait to hear some david benjamin originals in the key of c.

Speaker 6:

In the key of c and the first one was water inspired. So I'll tell you a little bit about the. The first one, uh, it started off as the accompaniment to a song I was writing, based on a poem by a friend of ours, and I ended up not being entirely happy with where it was going. Not sure where it was going, I ended up turning it into a solo piano piece. So the poem was describing, you know, laying down by you know, a slow, flowing kind of lazy river on a very warm summer afternoon. You have bugs sort of flitting around, but the whole the air is very still, it's just very calm. And I titled this one Reflections. What else you might get from it is entirely up to you as the listener, but that was my inspiration for it.

Speaker 6:

And the second piece and, like I said, these are both fairly short the second piece was inspired by the piano. I actually should say this first one was very much also influenced by Chopin. The second piece was inspired by the piano music of friedrich kuhlau, who was a contemporary of mozart, wrote a lot of short piano pieces and such a lot of his music. He was also an opera composer. A lot of his music was lost in a house fire. Oh, I think, had it not been for that, he probably would be better known today because he was a brilliant composer. So the second piece was very much inspired by him. So you can't think classical time period, uh, late 1700s, early 1800s at that era. So the first one was reflections and the second one I just titled after coolow.

Speaker 4:

The, the, the, the no-transcript brain blown I agree, nicole.

Speaker 3:

I mean fingers hurt just watching and listening that, david. That was incredible.

Speaker 7:

Well I love the vibe, like just they so different both songs. I love that so much.

Speaker 6:

That's why I picked them. I've actually written several pieces in the key of C, so I was kind of surprised. I had a few choices to go from, but these two I thought you know what. They're short, I can reasonably squeeze them in as a single performance and, yeah, there's good variety.

Speaker 1:

Loved it all original pieces by david benjamin in the key of c reflections and after coolow performed live for us here on the cove podcast, season one finale, david benjamin yes, there are two spots on the wheel left and they're both for producer craig. I'll do the next recorded one first so he can do his live one last. Uh, this one was actually trimmed out of a very recent podcast with our friend, chris villain. Uh, who had so much great, amazing things to share and craig of always has an amazing poem to share. Here, from the cropping room floor, is Craig's performance of a poem from the episode with Chris Villan. Oh, can't wait to hear it. Here's Craig Jackman interpreting what is Success, a poem by Ralph Waldo Emerson.

Speaker 3:

To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children. To earn the approbation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty. To find the best in others. To give of one's self others to give of one's self. To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition. To have played and laughed with exaltation, to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.

Speaker 1:

Amazing poem and just so fantastically interpreted by our own producer, Craig Jackman.

Speaker 5:

Now I want, like a personal poem from Craig Jackman.

Speaker 4:

What.

Speaker 5:

Yeah, craig please.

Speaker 7:

Just poem from Craig Jackman. Yeah, craig, please.

Speaker 3:

For me. I think All right, I will do some research, hey.

Speaker 6:

Oh wait, am I included in this?

Speaker 1:

Sure, why not have you found one for the season finale of our show?

Speaker 3:

Actually I have, and interestingly enough it relates to today's date.

Speaker 1:

Oh, it's a leap year thing.

Speaker 3:

It's a leap year thing. Yes, here's the info about it, the gentleman who wrote the poem. His real name is Paul Millicheap. He's from Britain, but he goes by the poem the poet name of Brian Bilston, and he's a poet and he knows it. He writes about the human condition, relationships and buses. One of his books is about buses Using the suit and Okay. So he began publishing short and pithy, often humorous poems on Twitter, which is where, which then spread widely through the social media, and he has been described as the poet laureate of Twitter Of course it's now X, but anyway as the Poet Laureate of Twitter. Of course it's now X, but anyway. And he has also been called the Banksy of the poetry world because in his publicity photos he literally hides his face behind a book. So all you see is this, and the poem that he wrote that I found is called An Extra Day by Brian Bilston.

Speaker 3:

If every year had an extra day, the things that I might do I'd paddle down the Amazon in a fiberglass canoe and topple this bad government with an unexpected coup. I'd write a five-part symphony for cello and kazoo. If every year had an extra day, the things I might achieve I'd have my own cosmetics range and invest in new types of cheese. And I don't think it's naive of me to imagine that I'd receive an Oscar for Best Picture from my friend Keanu Reeves. If every year had an extra day, there'd be no stopping me. I'd fix the dripping tap upstairs, I'd save the honeybee and travel around the country collecting honorary degrees, finding time to decline the knighthoods and OBEs. Why then, when an extra day arrives, can no extra time be found? Perhaps I should try smaller steps, not wait for leaps and bounds.

Speaker 7:

I got chills with that. That was like I love the ending so good. Yeah, I love that one.

Speaker 6:

That's very, very cute. And then wow, profound.

Speaker 1:

Yes, cute, and then, wow, profound. Craig Jackman, ladies and gentlemen, got. Basically I wanted to spread his poems out, but I left it up to the wheel. Who had it be All so, so, amazing. We've gone through stages Acts one and two and three of this show. Act one was obviously the games and two, two was the music and three was the poetry. But I'm going to attack on an extra leg by performing a tune formed um.

Speaker 1:

We did something for our friend, a friend of ours, uh, by the name of tom caroza, who um is. We met during covid it was a huge part of the vodacity network and um, if this crazy thing happened, his his apartment in new york city. It burned and nobody to this day knows how the fire started. But we came together as a family on the vodacity network to um do like a telecast, a broadcast, a support, an episode to support and um help him through that tragedy. And I opened the show with this song. It was the first time I ever performed it and I may have performed it once or twice since, but I thought, um, it was perfect for tonight because it just encapsulates this uh family that we have found here on the internet, like based on all of our backgrounds and the internet and the Vodacity network, and leaning on each other and finding grace and support throughout any tragedy that happens or any hardships that we're going through. Just know, knowing that you have a sub, a family to support you and, um, it just lends so much to starting a new adventure.

Speaker 1:

And that was me wanting to start a podcast. Like three or four years ago. I was like I want to do a podcast but I don't feel like I have the support around me. And then to, just seven months ago, being like now is the time. Now is the time to do it. And everybody, all of the friends and family that you have seen you see in front of you right now and you've seen in front of you the past Dari, the Pierces and I'm just so grateful for everybody. And I feel like this was the song to play as we closed season one. And here's a little bit of Lean On me. Sometimes in our lives we all have pain, we all have sorrow, but if we are wise, we know that there's always tomorrow. Lean on me. If you're not strong, I'll be your friend. Not strong, I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on, for it won't be long till I'm gonna need somebody to lean on, so please swallow Somebody to lean on.

Speaker 1:

So please swallow your pride If I have things you need to borrow, for no one can fill those of your needs that you won't let show so just call on me, brother, if you need a hand, we all need somebody to lean on.

Speaker 1:

I just might have a problem, you understand. We all need somebody to lean on. Lean on me. When you're not strong, I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on, for it won't be long till I'm gonna need somebody to lean on. Just call on me, brother, if you need a hand. We all need somebody to lean on, I just might. We all need somebody to lean on. I just might have a problem, that you'd understand. We all need somebody to lean on. If there is a load you have to bear that you can't carry, I'm right up the road. I'll share your load if you just call me. Call me, come on, call me, call me.
