Why Don’t You Have Children?

“Why don’t you have children?” It’s a question that anyone and everyone feels free to ask – from family and friends to (believe it or not) strangers you just met. To strangers, the question may indeed be a routine (if not bold and direct), get-to-know-you type conversation starter. But to family and friends, there’s usually a very specific motivation behind the question. When are you going to do what Society, the Patriarchy, the Church, and your Mother expect of you, which is to procreate, multiply, and populate the earth with children?

But here’s the deal. To the person on the receiving end, that question might conjure up a host of events and emotions that are anything but innocuous.
