Speaker 1:

Hey, hey, everybody, welcome back to Life Unmastered. This week we are going to do something a little different. We've had such a busy month this last month, and so we thought it'd be fun to do a little monthly wrap up.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it should be fun. I don't remember having this busy of a May.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, we had a busy month with birthdays and graduations. It was the start of summer.

Speaker 2:

Mother's Day.

Speaker 1:

And we started a podcast.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we just threw something else in the mix. Why not do more?

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it was a busy month, but it was a lot of fun. So we started the month with Jason's birthday party. He turned six and I still cannot believe it.

Speaker 2:

It hurts you to even say it.

Speaker 1:

It does It. just it feels like it's been six years, but also it doesn't. I just I can't believe that he's six.

Speaker 2:

I know It feels like he's just always been here. It's weird how he becomes like this person that I don't remember life before him.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and he, he's changed so much.

Speaker 2:

Especially this year.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, especially this year.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

It's like he went from our little boy to this kid and it's, it's so sad.

Speaker 2:

And you don't even notice it until you start looking at pictures and stuff. But all of a sudden he is like this little boy. Now He's no longer a toddler.

Speaker 1:

I know, i know, but we celebrated him with a epic for him, like in his eyes, an epic birthday party.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

We did a monster truck themed one Last year for his fifth birthday. We took him to monster jam for the first time And although for us it was this little tiny arena and there was like one little mound for the trucks to do their tricks on, Yeah, we weren't exactly like where the Broncos play.

Speaker 2:

It's a very tiny arena where they play college hockey games.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, And it was very understated, Like there was. I got in there and I'm like what is this?

Speaker 2:

I didn't know they could fit monster trucks in there, i know.

Speaker 1:

But he didn't know any different and it changed his world, yeah.

Speaker 2:

And now there's monster truck. everything in this house, yeah.

Speaker 1:

So we did a monster jam birthday party for him this year, and I will say that this has been my most prepared birthday party to date.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, you definitely have put on enough of them now that you have it down, and we also have the majority of platters and jars and stuff that we need Makes it easier.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but I was done with all of my prep the night before by 10 pm, which usually I'm up.

Speaker 2:

Well past, i'm in bed.

Speaker 1:

Yes, way into the wee hours of the morning And then the day of. I had everything done before anybody showed up, which is also amazing.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and that was a good job by you. But I mean, i don't know how we got into a situation. We originally planned on big parties every five years And last minute we just decided whatever, we have nothing else to do, let's throw another big party.

Speaker 1:

Well, no, what happened is last year for his fifth birthday. we finished singing happy birthday to him and he looked around at everybody and was like, thank you, This was the best day ever. Word for word That is what he said I have it on video and it is just the sweetest thing ever And I'm like that's it. We're doing this every single year.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, you tricked me.

Speaker 1:

It's so worth it, though. The excitement for both of them for each other's birthday parties too is just great This year. I will say we didn't initially plan to have like it to be as big as it was.

Speaker 2:

I feel like that was forced on us. Originally we planned on just having like kids over to play in the backyard and then we had three days of rain like not only the day of the party but also the days leading up to the party.

Speaker 1:

Well, we also had 14 kids.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, more kids coming also.

Speaker 1:

So what we're gonna do with all those kids in our house? Yeah, and so we, at the last second, decided to get a bounce house again. Which best decision ever.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, if you can do it, I highly suggest the bounce house. The kids can just bounce all day outside and leave the parents alone And you know that they aren't really, you know, getting in anything they shouldn't.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, they're just right outside the window And they jumped for hours. We had that thing for like eight hours and they jumped the whole time.

Speaker 2:

And the only time anybody got hurt is when those pesky parents got in there with them.

Speaker 1:

Pesky parent. No, that would be you. No, that's true.

Speaker 2:

There was somebody else in there with me. Yeah, your brother you and your brother.

Speaker 1:

But I will say you got to stick up for Danny here. Nobody was complaining about Danny. There was literally one of the girls here was calling you the monster. That poor girls went home and had nightmares.

Speaker 2:

It's not my fault. There was like 10 young toddler boys who only want to like, smash and destroy And then one girl who happened to get in the way of the smashing and destroying.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but it was, the boys did have a lot of fun.

Speaker 2:

But there was.

Speaker 1:

There was a few tears when you were in there playing.

Speaker 2:

A little bit. I played a win. Okay, i taught those kids an important lesson.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, you did Good for you. But when we were getting Carter ready in the morning and in the middle of doing her hair and we've had that they've known that there's a bounce house coming and the morning of the party she's like looking at me in the mirror like Mom, why is Jace getting a bounce house today? I thought that bounce houses only came when you turned five.

Speaker 2:

She doesn't forget anything.

Speaker 1:

She doesn't, and so her birthday is at the end of December, three days after Christmas.

Speaker 2:

Yeah.

Speaker 1:

And so getting a bounce house for her, then, is just not a thing.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, too much snow, too much cold, too much wet.

Speaker 1:

Yeah. So we had told her that you only get a bounce house when you turn five. And now here we are, jace is turning six and he's getting a bounce house. And so I'm like, initially I'm like, well, he's still technically five, yeah, and then that wasn't good enough for her. So I was like, you know, just go ask your dad. And Michael's just like, well, sometimes things change.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, i might have told her that he's the firstborn.

Speaker 1:

You did not, No, you were just very matter of fact. Like you know, sometimes things change and she was okay with that. She's like well, I get to jump on this thing too, But now that things have changed, I want one for my next birthday.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, she knows it's coming.

Speaker 1:

So we're actually in the process of moving her birthday towards, well, her birthday party.

Speaker 2:

Yeah To the summer. We can't legally change her birthday. I don't think.

Speaker 1:

No, we can't. But I mean, I don't know, maybe you can.

Speaker 2:

These days.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, but so this year we did her birthday in February, her birthday party, and now we're going to actually give her a second birthday party at the end of September, yeah, and so hopefully by then kids have already been in school. We don't have to worry about people going on vacation. Hopefully that gives us that time, that first month back in school, where nobody's like everyone's past being sick, so nobody can't make it because they're all sick. So hopefully this works and it'll still be warm enough that she can finally get her bounce house.

Speaker 2:

So the last time I tried to surprise them was something in September that was supposed to be a gift for something at the end of December. They just ended up getting two gifts. Oh the puppy, the puppy, the puppy. They were not old enough to understand that it was a Christmas gift, so we had to do two.

Speaker 1:

I mean to be fair. I knew from the beginning that that was not a Christmas gift. That was cute that you thought that, though No, three and four year old are going to be like, oh this is Christmas in September. Cool, dad. Yeah, i'll remember this one. Christmas rolls around.

Speaker 2:

The same thing is going to happen about this birthday. I can feel it.

Speaker 1:

We'll still have to do something on her birthday but it won't be a birthday party. Anyway. So leading up to this bounce house was quite an experience, wasn't it? You want to tell everybody what you were doing with towels in the yard.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I became one of those crazy neighbors that you see doing something ridiculous in their backyard. That doesn't make sense unless you're involved.

Speaker 1:

I do wonder if anybody saw you doing that. They had to have Nobody's mentioned anything, though.

Speaker 2:

They wouldn't probably directly to us yet, but, as noted, it was raining for three days, like two days leading up to his birthday and the day of. In our backyard is on a significant slope, but it's not leveled off the way it's supposed to be, so there's a lot of flooding. All of the water collects down towards the bottom and doesn't drain out the side like it's supposed to. It just kind of pools there.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and we're trying to get that fixed right now because it makes it really hard for the kids to play in the backyard.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, but I mean so to take care of this. the only thing I could think to do would be grab a bunch of dirty towels and go out there and essentially mop the grass with these towels.

Speaker 1:

I wish you guys could see this.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, i've literally buckets of water. I'm ringing out of the towels as I'm like patting the dirt and trying to move it and then moving it to the side of the house and ringing it out, like for two days.

Speaker 1:

And come to find out it was all for nothing.

Speaker 2:

We have some small tarps and I thought, if I laid out the tarps, that we could put the bounce house on top of the like, so the entrances would come out on the tarps and we wouldn't have any slippage water or anything.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, because the year before we had a wet lawn and it was so hard for the kids to get their feet wet and then climb into the bounce house. Yeah, it was deadly, it was deadly.

Speaker 2:

So the guy came to deliver the bounce house and I'm explaining to him why I have tarps on the floor and he looked at me like I was crazy and said I have a tarp, and then proceeded to lay out a tarp that took up the entire backyard Directly over mine. Two tarps, mind you. It was the most emasculating thing I've ever seen.

Speaker 1:

I mean after seeing the size, the epic size of his tarp, your tarps looked like they were little towels.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah, in all sense of the word. he had big stakes, big tarps, and not here. I am just like like yeah, little man, I almost went and bought a giant truck just to even out even things out, but it all worked out.

Speaker 1:

So, anyways, it was a great birthday party and he had so much fun and I'm really glad that we do these every year. Thanks, babe, yeah, yeah. But then the exact or well the following day after that was Mother's Day And your parents came down for Jason's birthday party and stayed with us, so it was fun getting to celebrate with them.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, they loved it. Yeah, it's still weird seeing them every holiday now.

Speaker 1:

But it's so fun to have family to celebrate these things with because it's been like five years since we've been able to do that.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and regularly. So it's not just us celebrating these things of it being a regular day. It's now something special on holidays.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's nice, so it's fun. We got to do two back to back. We did Jason's birthday and then Mother's Day, and that was really fun.

Speaker 2:

Delicious brunch buffet type thing.

Speaker 1:

I love a good seafood buffet.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker 1:

So then it was fun to Jason had. His birthday was in the middle of the week, it was the last week of school, and so he was able to have cupcakes with his classmates at school And that was like the sweetest thing. His teacher sent a video and he's like dancing and spinning around and he's just like his dad, just like his dad. Everybody sing to me now is my time to shine.

Speaker 2:

You know it's still like weirds me out that we have this direct communication with his teacher Whenever I see your texting his teacher that he's going to be sick or it's his birthday, or we get these videos and stuff. And that wasn't a thing, obviously, when we were kids And I couldn't only imagine if my parents had direct contact with their teacher or my teachers that way.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, i think that's part of the kids being in a small private school too. That's a benefit, because The climbing it's just this small, intimate thing that we get to have, which I love.

Speaker 2:

I think it's easier. It's like, miss van Dale, your child is acting crazy. I have video of what he's doing. Please come get him. Fortunately, that has not happened yet.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, i hope it doesn't but yes, he is a van Dale. so But we did make it to the end of their very first year of school. Mm-hmm, which was Such a weird experience because we originally had planned to home school and Then, with Jason his speech delay, decided Pretty suddenly like we're gonna put them in school.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we had to try something different. He wasn't making the progress that we wanted to see and just more time around other kids. His age was definitely gonna be helpful and it was becoming obvious.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, and now that he's gone through his first full year, i Really wish we'd have done it sooner, because, man, he made Just the most insane amount of progress this year. Yeah it's mind-blowing.

Speaker 2:

What I don't know how much of it was because of school, so I wouldn't feel bad about that. But, like also we talked about how much he's grown, just as a person You can tell and I think that was one of the most like Heart-wrenching things about the end of the year is looking at the before, like the first day of school picture, to the last day Of school picture, and that's when it really like dawned on me how different he was, because you can actually see He's gone up like three bricks on the front of the house, basically like he's grown that much.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, we're not measuring in inches, we're measuring measuring in bricks.

Speaker 2:

I mean, you know, next we'll take his weight in stone, we'll be consistent.

Speaker 1:

I Don't know if I can continue on with those pictures every year, because that was, that was a depressing It was tragic. It was. It was hard to see. Yeah, so I took their picture on the first day of school and their picture on the last day of school and The differences between Carter weren't as extreme. But with Jace, i mean, he went from this like little baby face to this little boy and Next year it'll be little boy to puberty.

Speaker 1:

Oh gosh, stop. But yeah, it's just. It was crazy to see. But more than his physical appearances, he also Developed so much in other ways. His speech. I can understand almost everything he's saying now.

Speaker 2:

Only when he gets really upset is it really hard to understand what's going on.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, or shy, or nervous, Mm-hmm, but we had these small goals for him. Like we want him to learn how to stand in line and To do simple follow simple instructions. Yeah, those are the things that we are struggling with, with him at the beginning of the year and now he's doing math and reading and counting money and it's just it. It blows my mind and It was really exciting that he was graduating from kindergarten into First grade you don't graduate from kindergarten. Yes, he did.

Speaker 2:

I can. I'm not the only parent in the world who thinks this is a little silly.

Speaker 1:

Well, silly as it may be, he graduated from the garden and you were not there.

Speaker 2:

Somebody had to work.

Speaker 1:

Okay, I mean we can take off to go fishing, though I didn't know.

Speaker 2:

I didn't know that he was having a graduation the day before I was leaving work for five days, so I Said that I wouldn't be able to make it because I had to make sure all my work got done.

Speaker 1:

So I showed up there as a single mom Trying to take photos of both of my children and videos, because they're both in this Play presentation that the school put on, which was adorable. Carter did this ABC rap which had dance moves for everything, and it was so stinking cute, and Jace had not only a singing performance thing, but then he also walked the stage and got his little diploma certificate thing and his little gown in his cabin gown with his tassel and, oh my goodness, he got his Diploma.

Speaker 1:

And then he like walks past and like shakes the hands of his teacher and he's like all excited and as he's walking down the ramp, like so Movie-esque, like he jumps up with his hands and his diploma, he's like a little dance, oh my god, so cute as if he just went through like four years of college.

Speaker 1:

But yeah, so Michael wasn't there, which was Sad for me. I was sad, i didn't realize how disappointed I would be, to be fair, until after We were, you know, after we went like I knew you weren't going and I didn't push it too hard And I wish I would have that's, that's what I told you.

Speaker 2:

To got home was like if it was gonna be this big of a deal, i wish you would have told me ahead of time and I would have like realized. But every time it came up that I wasn't going, it wasn't like the morning of I was like, hey, i'm not going. Like we knew a couple weeks in advance that I wasn't gonna go. It was kind of like, okay, well, you should be there, but I guess it's fine.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, like I let you know, i wanted you there, but I didn't really, you know.

Speaker 2:

You didn't let me know I was in trouble for not going.

Speaker 1:

You were in trouble once I got home.

Speaker 2:

Yeah but again, like I said, to be fair, i didn't know what did that cost me and cost me sushi, or what did we do to make up?

Speaker 1:

Did we do sushi? there was something we should have done sushi. We did something? Maybe we did, i don't remember, but I know I didn't make you make up for it. So thank you, yeah, but immediately following his graduation promotion call what you want. You went into your five days off vacation thing.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, i mean it, it was going into Memorial Day weekend. Yeah so I basically took two days off of work and made it my own five-day weekend.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, the day before and day after, and we actually We had the best time.

Speaker 2:

So we got to see a lot of cool hiking spots with the kids, which I think is something that we've been waiting for, because We've been here for four years and they've always kind of been too young to like really trust outdoors, with not constantly putting stuff in their Mouth or tripping non-stop or worrying about edges, and they were actually able to see some cool streams and a lot of fun stuff.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, i think before, when they were little or smaller, younger, um, they it was like oh, we'd walk five steps and they're like daddy, hold me.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I'm tired.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so we couldn't really do a ton. There was one place that we'd go that had a stream and if there's water involved there in, but I felt like we were actually able to explore Colorado for the first time with the kids.

Speaker 2:

It was pretty cool.

Speaker 1:

It was a really cool day. So That first day you went out on your own. You did some hiking and fishing, right.

Speaker 1:

Yeah and I was happy that you were able to spend some time during that break with just yourself doing things quiet, yeah, cuz it's a lot being around the kids and So I was happy that you got to have that time. I felt like you needed it and so I'm glad they got to do that. But I'm also glad that we had some really amazing family days. Like core memory for me was that that day that we went Hiking and then we went to one of our favorite lunch spots and Carter slept all the way through lunch Yeah, for the rest of us enjoyed it, and then we immediately followed it with hockey and rollerblading and like yard games at home.

Speaker 1:

Outfront Yeah and then you cooked tri tip for us for dinner, and then we got to use our Fancy little s'mores bar.

Speaker 2:

That's right.

Speaker 1:

The kids love that, and as soon as we finished with s'mores, you open the front door and it's sunny as can be, but raining, and so the kids got to go play in the rain.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, dance in the sunny rain which is always a weird thing, and if you don't live in Colorado or I get me, might help happen other places. I don't know probably, but it's just so weird to see bright, sunny as day You've ever seen in water falling.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, the weather here is so, so insane. Yeah but usually we get those dark Clouds and it's not really pretty when it rains. It's not very often that we get that beautiful sunshine while it's raining and you brought the speaker out and they were Literally dancing in the rain and it was just the best way to end that day.

Speaker 2:

And Carter still randomly reminds us of that when we're driving somewhere like remember when we were dancing in the rain to this song.

Speaker 1:

Yes, baby, we remember and that I love that, that they Remember those moments just like we do, and I can just only imagine in their heads How much like, how much more magical those memories are for them.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and it's. It's always cool to see him do something new, like the hockey sticks with the ball and stuff, and like Trying to teach Jace how to hold the hockey stick, hit a hockey stick, and like be able to pass some of that on a little bit, which is weird as a dad. Yeah so I'm not gonna teach him how to play soccer.

Speaker 1:

But he is really into soccer. I know, i don't know, i know where he gets it from.

Speaker 2:

I know where he gets it from the twins.

Speaker 1:

Ah, yeah, yeah, maybe so but also Carter. Can you believe how quickly she learned her rollerblades?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, it was like day two day two. Yeah, or attempt to yeah, yes, yeah they were like 30 minute training lessons. I'm impressed that That's amazing but we've known that about her like even with um Throwing pitches with like a softball or something like she is very athletic.

Speaker 1:

That's true last year with her first year Like swinging that ball on that Baseball tee.

Speaker 2:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker 1:

Our neighbor was doing that with her and he was like She's amazing.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, she hit the ball.

Speaker 1:

So hard that she put a welt on his stomach. Do you remember that? Yeah, take that Our nice neighbor trying to teach her how to play, and he walked away with the welt.

Speaker 2:

That's what he gets. You don't be nice to stranger kids. Oh, that whole stranger danger thing works both ways.

Speaker 1:

It's our neighbor that we know and like.

Speaker 2:

Carter made him pay.

Speaker 1:

Oh gosh, you're such a weirdo.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, maybe a little bit, but whatever, that's fine. I Did the last day was pretty cool for me to like be able to take the kids to their first movie experience like an actual Movie theater experience, because I didn't know people really still did that anymore.

Speaker 1:

I I mean, it's been at least six years since we had been to a movie theater. Yeah and It was kind of nice that we went on a Tuesday in the middle of the day, because we were almost the only ones there. Mm-hmm and now movie theaters have like these fancy Cozy, like the recliners with a tray. Yes, yeah, it was amazing.

Speaker 2:

I know we sound so old. Right now I do.

Speaker 1:

Where was this when we were?

Speaker 2:

going to movie No.

Speaker 1:

But it was really fun for them and we saw Mario Brothers, which Jace had been talking about.

Speaker 2:

Constantly. Yeah, he had to have one of his friends at school had to have told him about Super Mario.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I don't know where it came from, but all of a sudden he's a super Super Mario Brothers fan.

Speaker 2:

Yep.

Speaker 1:

So that was really fun. He was a little nervous when the lights went down and the volume went up, which was sad for me, but also I got to cuddle him through half a movie.

Speaker 2:

I know how long has it been since you got that much cuddling in it's so long the boy does not sit still.

Speaker 1:

So, as sad as I was that he was nervous, i was I was loving it.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, his Um sensory issues pop up and we knew he might have a problem, so like we brought his monster jam. Yeah, noise canceling headphone type things Couldn't. We were kind of prepared for it this time, but he, before the movie even started, he kind of like stood up and almost demanded to leave because he was getting really nervous about What was going on.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it was all I mean. I, he's Normal for most the part. Yeah, it sounds weird, but His sensory Processing disorder comes into play and like random times, and it's almost like I forget that he has this until he shows it to us in these moments. But we're getting better and so I'm glad that we were prepared, because those headphones saved the experience.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, 20 minutes into the movie He was having the time of his life exactly candy and popcorn.

Speaker 1:

And Carter She did. Okay, i'm glad that it was just us back there.

Speaker 2:

Yep.

Speaker 1:

Um, so we can. you can you pick your seats at the movie theater now?

Speaker 2:

Yeah, did you know that?

Speaker 1:

I had no idea. So we're able to pick our seats in the very back row because we bought, we brought iPad for her just in case she wasn't gonna be able to make it through. And she wasn't. She spilled popcorn, she tripped over jackets, she was leaning down in front of the row, in front.

Speaker 2:

She's dancing in the aisles.

Speaker 1:

Yes, she's still a little, i mean she's four but, she loved it.

Speaker 2:

Yeah she had so much fun and she still talks about it listening to Carter explained to the entire movie theater Why it was funny that he hit his head was probably my favorite part of the movie.

Speaker 1:

Yes, and because jays is wearing his headphones, she wanted to be wearing hers too, and so because she can't hear as well screaming, in the theater. So, anyways, that was. That was really fun. I'm glad we got to do that, and they're for sure gonna make us do that again. I know well, hopefully something comes out that we don't mind taking them to yeah, but so now we're in full-on summer, kids are out of school, they're home all day long.

Speaker 2:

And I can't wait for school to start back up.

Speaker 1:

It's been like four days and we're already.

Speaker 2:

It's the longest summer in my life.

Speaker 1:

It's funny how Quickly we got used to them being at school. Yeah, because when they first started I was like my babies.

Speaker 2:

And then you realize how wonderful, sweet, like even work, quiet is quiet, yeah, compared to having kids at home.

Speaker 1:

I was working the whole time that they were at school, but I wasn't having to break up fights and Make 15 snacks and do all this while. I was trying to work, and next year they're gonna be in school All day, so I'll be able to get work done and clean without tornadoes Follow me around as soon as I clean up something. So I think that'll be a hard transition too, but It'll be. It'll be good.

Speaker 2:

But I think we'll be okay.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, we got to make it through summer first and It's it's gonna be interesting, but I think we're already into kind of a good routine. Yeah.

Speaker 2:

I mean, you've done a good job of like game-planning activities and experiments and different like times of day to like freshen up on schoolwork, or Now it's time to get ready, just as if we're going to school, to kind of keep them in a routine.

Speaker 1:

Exactly, i'm trying to keep their routine. So at the same time that we would get ready for school, i'm trying to still do that and then go on a walk around the neighborhood, kind of get them out of the house and Their little bodies moving. The other day we saw a dead grasshopper and so they, you know, explored that a little bit.

Speaker 2:

Explored the dead grasshopper.

Speaker 1:

Pushes like those little moments. And then we I'm trying to get Some. We're calling it homework, but it's just like little learning packets.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, together.

Speaker 1:

So that we just keep their little minds fresh and excited about learning. I would imagine, you know, at their age It would be a lot to just go from like a summer free to just jumping right back into school. So hopefully this is kind of helpful and, yeah, i'm excited about it. They seem to like it. I'm trying to plan some fun activities at least once or twice throughout the week so we kind of break up the mundane.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, and I mean it's got to be hard for them too, because they went from so much activity to now. It's kind of like Play with your usual toys, watch your usual TV shows, and I mean there's only so much bluey that they can watch. Yeah, and the word bored is Already some has entered our household so many times, I'm like do you know what this word means? It's boring. It's boring.

Speaker 1:

I'm bored, i'm like you're, for you Don't know what bored is. It's terrible a good Jillian. Things go play with something blame the iPads. Yeah. Technology they haven't really been playing with those.

Speaker 2:

I know, but that's it like because they're bored with that now They're looking for like the next thing, that's like instant gratification.

Speaker 1:

I I don't think that's it actually, because I think what it is is that they were at school and they had all their friends and they were doing things constantly keeping them busy, and now That's not what's happening.

Speaker 2:

There's lolls in the day.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, now They're having to actually sit we, i mean, just because they're on summer break, i don't get to go on summer break because I still have to work, Mm-hmm and so, unfortunately, they're having to occupy themselves during that. But anyways, i feel like we're trying to make it fun for them and We're doing our best, but We have some goals for the summer, right.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I want to take care of the lawn.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, it's struggling.

Speaker 2:

I well, i'm so upset. Last year There were rumors in the neighborhood That we had the best lawn and I heard that our neighbors were openly talking about our lawn.

Speaker 1:

I heard that rumor too, as it was being told to you. Are we sure that wasn't?

Speaker 2:

How dare you? are you implying that I was given false information to make me feel good about our lawn?

Speaker 1:

I mean I'm, i'm just saying like, are we sure somebody wasn't just stroking your ego cuz he knew? Look, i don't care if he was All right.

Speaker 2:

I felt good and I'm convinced that everybody loved our lawn and this year. It is dragging a little bit.

Speaker 1:

It's dragging a lot of it And you know what I realized?

Speaker 2:

it's other people fertilized and I didn't. And I can tell, like especially our neighbor Cuz, a part of our lawn kind of connects and I can see this deep, beautiful green next to my Green. That isn't as deep and beautiful and it's true, the grass is always greener on the other side.

Speaker 1:

I mean we're. I think it's a collection of things sprinkler heads and all that stuff. We currently have a beach in the middle of our yard.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we're trying to level it out to fix that drainage problem. So yeah.

Speaker 1:

So Having a beautiful neighbor envious lawn would be high up there. We've got a summer reading list which I'm zooming through.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, I think you already pastures.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, I did. I love to read and it's just like the perfect activity for me to just kind of zone out and just escape into this Fantasyland romance world where there's happy endings. Unlike real life, with no screaming toddlers or That's true, and and my books are never screaming toddlers Yeah.

Speaker 2:

I know there's not many people Write books, and if this is living the dream, why aren't there more books about it?

Speaker 1:

Everyone just gets a glimpse at, like the beginning of the relationship. Yeah, just like how stories are. But You are reading.

Speaker 2:

I am rereading.

Speaker 1:

You've been reading for like six months now.

Speaker 2:

Yes, i am rereading the Lord of the Rings and, for whatever reason, i've been on this Extreme Lord of the Rings kick you have been and I have never watched the full trilogy with you.

Speaker 1:

I've watched like parts of the first movie, but it's just so boring. I cannot Get into it, but I have really gotten into all of your behind-the-scenes that you've been watching.

Speaker 2:

I know, which is weird, because those, if you can believe it the behind-the-scenes DVD extras are like three times the length of the actual movies and considering the entire trilogy is like 13 hours. We just got so many behind-the-scenes that we don't even need to know.

Speaker 1:

Oh, they're so good that I don't even need to watch the movie. I don't care about the movies at all. The behind-the-scenes that, what went into them, is Amazing and they're funny.

Speaker 2:

They are, these people like I think I'm. What impressed me the most about the behind-the-scenes is To be able to see a group of people who absolutely love what they do and to be it know that they got to go to work for like the Seven years that it took or whatever it was, and do something that they absolutely love to do, to create something They're proud of. That like lives on is really special to me to because I feel like so many people out there Go to work every day and it's not what they love doing or it's not what they Envisioned for themselves to do. So it's like I love seeing people succeed that way and to me that's success.

Speaker 1:

I also think why I like it is because we know that that's not what the industry is like. now I feel like everything is CGI cookie cutter and shortcuts and you know you can tell I mean the the time and effort and detail they put into things, that The insane sets that they built, that took them forever just to take down, is Mind-blowing.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, we're gonna have a whole episode about this. Eventually, once we're done, once we're finally done with like hour 96 of behind-the-scenes, we'll go ahead and have a full episode about everything we learned.

Speaker 1:

We'll do a review on the behind-the-scenes of Lord of the Rings.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, 30 years later.

Speaker 1:

We're only watching, like what a half hour ish a night.

Speaker 2:

There is so many people right now who are going. They made Lord of the Rings movies like they don't even know they exist.

Speaker 1:

I doubt that That's a big trilogy.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, well, I'm sure after those movies came out is probably when they put the recliners in the movie theaters.

Speaker 1:

That's how old we are, Yeah probably, but you're rereading the actual book. Yes, is the book more exciting than the movie, or do they do just as much walking?

Speaker 2:

No, it's different, like I mean, it's kind of the same amount of walking. but it's funny because the way those books are written it's not by rule how you would write a book, because really when Tolkien was writing it, it's like the Lord of the Rings trilogy is one section of a story of an entire history that he's telling. So characters are coming in and out of the book, left and right or mentioned, and there's no detail given on who they are or why they're important or why that's significant. because it's kind of like of the understanding of oh, you'll go read one of the other 9,000 stories about this person that are out there if you want to know about him. So, like all the rules of the book aren't or how you would go about writing a book don't exist for this book. It's like you can't do that. Nobody's going to understand what's going on.

Speaker 2:

So it almost like works and maybe that's why it's so cool to people and so big. It's because everyone's like wait a minute, who's that? And then you want to go find out more. It was a great sales tactic. Unintentionally, i'm sure he was just writing a story and that was in his head for so many years, but it's a real fun thing to like see, and so when you're reading the books, that's literally what you will get is just they're walking, they're walking. Someone important came in and you have no idea why that was special.

Speaker 1:

See, this is why I stick to my genre of books. You know, like just don't have to think a lot Exactly 110% because, at the end of the day, after everything that goes on, the last thing they want to do is sit down and feel like I'm reading homework.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, because what?

Speaker 1:

you just described does not sound fun to me.

Speaker 2:

Well, that's the difference between us. Like, i geek out on history and stuff And even though this is a fake history, it's written as if it's real.

Speaker 1:

Yeah, so Well, good, i hope that you enjoy that.

Speaker 2:

Maybe in three years down the road, because the way I'm going it's going to be one book of the trilogy per year.

Speaker 1:

So Well, the difference too is the first time you read the book you didn't have a. you know kids.

Speaker 2:

It's so hard to read.

Speaker 1:

So I can sit down and read with the kids screaming and running around and tune all that out.

Speaker 2:

Because you don't have to think about your book. For me, like, everybody's name sounds the same, everything is written the same, and like if you read without really paying attention for two pages, you're completely lost.

Speaker 1:

Well, to be fair, I'm paying attention. I'm just better at tuning them out than you are.

Speaker 2:

Well, I don't know if you should brag about that.

Speaker 1:

I think that, I think that every mom knows what I'm saying. When your kids are just being crazy all day. You just learned for your sanity to tune some of it out.

Speaker 1:

That's good to know. I'm not just like sitting around reading in front of the kids all day either. I'm just saying I can do that You can sit down with the kids or with the kids in bed and something can distract you. It's just, we are different readers. So, anyway, i think that, in addition to our summer reading list, the only other goal we have is to finally finish cleaning out the garage.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, that seems to be like every married couple's goal. It's like we could store stuff in here if we didn't have all this crap.

Speaker 1:

I would love to at least be able to park the car in there if we needed to.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, when you have hail, storms and everything else, there is a part of you that like looks out and is like oh, Yeah, We got stuck in a hail storm the other day and I'm like please be small, please be small. There's nothing you can do about it.

Speaker 1:

Because they had a massive hail storm here, like right before we moved, and you still see cars driving around that you're like oh, you got stuck in that hail storm because their entire look like a golf ball. And their entire car just has dense evenly from front to back It's so sad.

Speaker 2:

That was a busy month, man. I'm tired just recapping it.

Speaker 1:

I know, but it was a lot of fun. I'm excited for what the rest of summer is going to be like.

Speaker 2:

Yeah, i expect it to be just as action packed and full, and now that we have a podcast to keep going, it's going to be extra exciting.

Speaker 1:
