Speaker 1:

The beauty and cosmetics industry plays a huge role in society and has done so for centuries. Clinical research confirms that the ability to take care of your appearance during illness increases confidence and can aid the healing process. It can take over five years of innovation and formulation to bring a new product to the market. Back in the beginning, cleopatra led the way for refined makeup in red, white and black colorings. White and black colorings Her collection of recipes created makeup from complex minerals, mixes with lead, byproducts such as psoriasite, loranite and phosgenate. Today, some perfume and cosmetics products are classified as hazardous goods, in particular perfume itself, which are made of combustible components. The flammable chemical composition of these products make them class 3 dangerous components according to ADR classifications specifications. Therefore, when it comes to the supply chain and freight forwarding, handling these goods has to be in compliance with specific requirements. This will ensure the preservation of the perfume qualities as well as adhering to safety during transportation.

Speaker 1:

The first modern perfume, hungaria water, was produced in Hungary in 1370, when scented oils were blended in alcohol solution. In the 18th century, England banned the use of lipstick because it was believed to lure men into marriage. However, in 1909, it was a famous London salon who was the first to sell cosmetics on the open market. The industry has not remained static. Every year, a quarter of all cosmetic products on the market are improved or are completely new. The Fast Beauty consumer goods industries driven by science. What may seem a simple improvement might, at times, represent a major scientific breakthrough. For example, it took 20 years of scientific advancement to remove the smell of ammonia from hair dye ammonia from hair dye, and there are at least 30 separate scientific steps involved in the development of every new lipstick.

Speaker 1:

The cosmetics and personal care industry contribute approximately $29 billion in added value to the European economy annually. There are at least 77 scientific innovation facilities in Europe carrying research in relation to cosmetics. The beauty industry supports over 2 million jobs. 167,730 people are employed directly and are further 1.63 million indirectly in the cosmetic supply chain. There is room for both large companies and SMEs in this industry. On average, large industry companies have a product portfolio of around 10,000 different cosmetic products and reformulate around 25% to 30% of their products every year, introducing aroundEs tend to have 40 to 160 products in their portfolio and introduce on average, 22 new ingredients each year. In the 2019 exhibition season, we counted 289 worldwide trade shows just related to beauty and personal care.

Speaker 1:

Today, I want to share with you some important discoveries I made about our everyday skincare and beauty products, so that you can avoid them too. The Shocking Truth About the Beauty Industry. Here are some scary facts about the personal care and beauty industry. These differ slightly between countries, but the general approach holds the truth. 1. Between countries, but the general approach holds the truth.

Speaker 1:

Number one almost any chemical can be used as an ingredient in personal care products. Two labels are allowed to be misleading and incomplete. Companies don't have to list all their ingredients. They don't have to list all their ingredients, they don't. Number three Unsubstantiated claims about product benefits are completely allowed. Number four there is almost no required safety testing of products or ingredients. Less than 20% of ingredients have actually been assessed. The average woman uses 12 products per day containing over 168 ingredients, absorbing 2 kg of chemicals a year. A man goes through 6 products with 61 ingredients, while a teenage girl hello autoimmune disease is exposed to a whopping 17 products with over 230 ingredients every day. That's every day Most of which are untested safety, unproven chemicals. Number six Products commonly contain penetration enhancers to drive ingredients deeper into the skin.

Speaker 1:

That means more chemicals absorbed into your bloodstream. These chemicals have been scientifically proven to be linked to cancer, endocrine Hormonal disease, thyroid function disruption, learning disabilities, asthma, respiratory Disease, skin Disease, liver Damage, brain Damage and Development Problems, immune System Damage, brain damage and development problems, immune system damage, male and female reproductive hormone dysfunction, damaged sperm and fatal development issues. Are you kidding me? Surely our governments would be on this stuff right? They'd be onto it, right.

Speaker 1:

Unfortunately, the cloud of large pharmaceutical and beauty companies, who have a hack to gain from the industry and equally as much to lose, use these bargening power and bulging wallets to make sure safety regulations banning these practices aren't ever passed. The government is behind these operations. Sorry about that. Earlier I was just frustrated and I was angry about how much poison is in these products. But let's get. Let's get back to the real facts. Let's get back to these ingredient labelings and all that stuff, because I'm furious now. I am really furious right now. Imagine you, your own child or spouse or friend or partners using these products and you don't even know how much they're damaging their own skin and their body. It's just a lot of stress right now, but let's get back to it, thank you.

Speaker 1:

These are the misleading labeling. Watch out for the labels that say natural or organic. There are currently no regulations in place governing the use of these terms, which means a product can contain only 1% organic ingredients and 99% chemicals, but slap organic on the label. That's what they do. Contain only 1% organic ingredients and 99% chemicals, but slap organic on the label. That's what they do to get your attention. Same goes with food. The same goes for products labeled paraben-free, ammonia-free, sulfate-free. Paraben free, ammonia free, sulfate free. They're usually from big companies Who've succumbed to the public Becoming aware of the dangers of certain ingredients, so they remove that particular substance, leave the rest of the chemicals in there and slap a XXX free label on the front alongside some pretty pictures of flowers in rolling fields is called greenwashing.

Speaker 1:

Even certification doesn't always guarantee safety. Products certified as organic can contain as little as 10% organic ingredients, depending on the certification body and type. Learn to be a stealth label reader and always turn a product around to see what ingredients are in it. If you can't recognize them, it's probably a good idea or a good sign to ditch it. Alternatively, source your products from someone you trust who's done the research for you and has your best interests at heart, and that person would be me.

Speaker 1:
