The Healthy Church Staff Podcast

Series Introduction: Factfulness for Church Leaders

August 30, 2024 Todd Rhoades Season 1 Episode 170

Could your cognitive biases be holding your ministry back? Join us on the Healthy Church Staff Podcast as we embark on a transformative journey through the insightful book Factfulness by Hans Rosling. I'm Todd Rhoades, co-founder of Chemistry Staffing, and I'm excited to introduce a 10-episode series where we uncover the hidden instincts like the gap instinct, negativity instinct, and straight line instinct that distort our perception of reality. These cognitive biases not only influence our personal lives but also impact our leadership and decision-making within the church. By understanding and countering these biases, we can develop a more fact-based worldview, enabling us to lead with greater compassion and effectiveness.

Throughout the series, we’ll relate Rosling’s principles to the unique challenges and opportunities faced by church staff and leadership. The emotional and traditional dynamics of a faith context can magnify these biases, making it imperative for us to recognize and address them. Let's explore how these cognitive distortions affect our ministries and discover actionable strategies to foster healthier, more vibrant church communities. Order your copy of Factfulness, tune in, and invite your team to join us as we strive to strengthen our leadership and make a meaningful difference in the lives we touch.

Speaker 1:

Well, hi there, welcome to the Healthy Church Staff Podcast. My name is Todd Rhodes. I'm one of the co-founders over at chemistrystaffingcom. It's Friday if you're listening to this podcast, on the day it was released, and today I wanted to take a couple of minutes because I'm thrilled to be embarking on a new series starting next week that I believe can be really transformative for you and your ministry.

Speaker 1:

Over the next few episodes, we're going to be diving deep into the groundbreaking book Factfulness by Hans Rosling. Hans is a global health researcher who's dedicated his life to understanding how the world works and why we often get it wrong, and in this series we're going to be exploring 10 powerful instincts that Rosling has identified as common cognitive biases that can distort our view of reality. And these instincts, like the gap instinct or the negativity instinct or the straight line instinct all of these can lead us to make inaccurate assumptions and to misinterpret data and ultimately make poor decisions. But because Rosling doesn't just leave us with these challenges, he also provides practical tools and strategies for overcoming these instincts and developing a better, fact-based worldview. We're going to take a look at these Now. This is not a ministry book and I would encourage you to go ahead and order a copy. You can get one probably over at Amazon, I'm guessing but it's not a ministry book. But I think we're going to be able to unpack some of these cognitive biases that Rosling has identified and I think it's really going to be insightful and maybe something a little bit unique that you're going to want to listen to every episode over the next couple of weeks.

Speaker 1:

Now you might be wondering, todd, why are you doing this? Why is this relevant for church leaders? And I can tell you that, at least in my experience for the last 35 years or so, the church is not immune to these instincts. In fact, these instincts can often be amplified in a faith context because emotions are constantly running high and traditions are deeply ingrained and the stakes feel incredibly important. But hopefully, by understanding some of these instincts and unpacking them and learning to counter them, we can become more effective leaders and more compassionate pastors and, hopefully, more faithful stewards of the gospel. We're going to be looking at the principles of factfulness to unique challenges and opportunities specifically facing church staff and leadership here in the United States, and we'll explore how these instincts can play out in our ministries and how they can hinder our ability to connect with people and how we can overcome them to build healthier, more vibrant and hopefully more impactful churches. So I hope you'll join me on the journey.

Speaker 1:

This is just a little introduction to let you know. Tell your friends, maybe reach out to your staff for the next two weeks, send them the links to the podcast and maybe go through this together. Maybe order some of Hans' book Again, it's called Factfulness Maybe order some copies of the book and go along with us as we unpack some of these truths for the next 10 episodes of the podcast. I really believe that together, if we bond together, we can not only strengthen our leadership but also just make a real difference in the lives of those that we serve. Again, the book is called Factfulness and it is written by Hans Rosling, h-a-n-s-r-o-s-l-i-n-g, and you can order a copy if you'd like to. I'm not a paid spokesperson for Hans at all, but I think it's going to be a beneficial study for us.

Speaker 1:
