He won the Duneland School Corporation Teacher of the Year in 2021. In 2022 he was a top 10 finalist for Indiana Teacher of the Year. Most recently he was named Indiana Outstanding Teacher of American History in 2023. DeRuntz serves as Chairman of Negotiations for the Duneland Teachers Association and is on the Board of directors for the Porter County Parks and Recreation.
