Speaker 1:

Welcome to Bites in Body Love. I'm Jamie, a dietitian and body image specialist. Join me to liberate yourself from diets and body shame, embracing true freedom and confidence with food and body. Take your place at the table on this transformative journey towards a life of freedom and confidence. Today, we're going to talk about the vicious cycle of distrusting your body. Okay, so this is a horrible, horrible cycle to get stuck in where you do not have trust with your body and therefore you look to all these external places to know what to do with taking care of your body how to eat, how to move, how to rest, just essentially how to take care of it and how to treat it. And because you don't have this internal trust and you don't have that internal intuition and that relationship built up and you are so used to relying on external means another person, another diet, another nutrition guru who claims that they know your body more than you would know your body you get trapped in this vicious cycle of seeking external knowledge, external cues to treat your body to, just in relation to how, what to do for your body. So this vicious cycle of distrusting your body looks like this it's this failing dieting cycle, that's this reoccurring pattern that so many people experience, and you. It starts with this motivation and commitment to some kind of diet external guru, some kind of external plan to take care of your body right. And with this motivation that you have, you start to get this, you start to trust that plan and then you get the initial progress quote, unquote whether that is feeling more energetic, seeing your body change, that promise of weight loss, that maybe a boost in confidence because you are following this plan and you're able to follow it. At that point, so you start to trust the plan and you're feeling a little bit better. And what you do in turn is again, instead of listening to your body, and because you don't know how to listen to your body, you start to, you continue to ignore what your body is telling you. So let's say, you set out on this diet plan that requires you to fast for a certain amount of hours, and then your body starts sending signals that it's hungry during those hours. But what we do is, because we distrust our body, we actually ignore these, single, these signals.

Speaker 1:

Okay, and then what happens is the diet starts to fail. You don't fail the diet, the diet starts to fail or it's unsustainable. And then we question and blame our body. We blame it for being hungry, we blame it for not losing more weight with the plan, or losing weight with the plan or not whatever that plan promised. So we question and blame our body rather than blame the diet. And then frustration and self-doubt continue to set in. We're very frustrated with ourselves, we're frustrated with our body. We have a lot of self-doubt saying we just can't get anything right. We failed another diet. Why can't we do this? What's wrong with us? The restriction and deprivation continues to happen.

Speaker 1:

And then, because we're unable to give our body what it wants and it needs, and we feel so disconnected and disempowered and we're just not feeling good overall, we feel like a failure. So what happens is we finally feel like we quote, unquote, given, but really our body is just like move out of the way. I am taking charge. We need to eat something. This is not good for us and I've been telling you it's not good for us.

Speaker 1:

And then what happens is these craving starts, binging starts, and all due to the strict dieting or these external plans and just ignoring our own internal cues, and also just because we have this, such a shameful talk to our body and such a disrespectful, disintuned relationship with our body. So there's a lot of shame that comes in consistently. That also plays into this. So we have a lot of emotional distress at this time, a very negative self-image, and we abandon that diet or that protocol due to the physical and emotional till. And your body is celebrating right like, thank goodness we're not doing that anymore. But your mind and your body are not on the same page and you are very upset. You feel you have these feelings of failure. You have this weight regain. You feel like you failed your plan and you couldn't stick with it. And then so because you're feeling so bad and you don't have that trust internally, you set out on a new plan, on a new diet, and you repeat the cycle of starting new diets and then it starts all over again. You trust another plan over and over and over, and you're stuck in this cycle.

Speaker 1:

And I want you to be honest when I ask you how long have you been stuck in this cycle? And it may not be diets, it might just be body distrust, disordered eating, body shaming, body checking. How long have you been stuck in this vicious cycle of distrusting and shaming your body? We can't keep trying more of the same thing. We need to break free, which requires sustainable changes and prioritizing overall health, prioritizing other things, looking at our relationship with food, looking at our relationship with our body and developing true trust with it. That's the only way to get out of the cycle. Otherwise, we are trapped in this cycle and you do not have to be trapped. I want to just shout that from the rooftops. That's my life mission to let everyone know that is not where you need to stick. You can break free of this. You just have to do things differently and get uncomfortable.
