Speaker 1:

Welcome to Dog Secrets. Dog Secrets Brought to you by Zedekis the Dog Prodigy King, the Dog Psychology Podcast, without the whispering, hey, hey, everyone, thank you for tuning in. I appreciate all the love and support. So, and this one, guys, I'm gonna go over how you gonna. So I have some friends, relatives, colleagues and friend of a friend.

Speaker 1:

They ask me, like, well, how do you do it? You know you cannot tell us how much we messed up, how messed up the dog is and how messed up. You know the spouses, my wife and you don't tell us much what to do. And in a way, you guys, they're right, because I can only do so much for podcasts. Guys, I'm good, not God, right, I mean, look at this can you learn how to drive from a podcast? Can you learn how to swim from a listening to podcast? You never swim. Can you learn how to ride a horse from listening to a podcast? Maybe some of you can, maybe like one in a 10,000, but most of you can't, most of you will not be able to.

Speaker 1:

And let's be fair, guys, if dog training was easy, you would see well-trained dogs everywhere. You would see polite dogs everywhere. You would see flawless performance dogs that stay like really really well, heal really well. They're never, ever distracted when they see other dogs, when they see when you have company over, when you, when there's a cat, a squirrel, when the dog's off leash, the dog will listen. So dog training, guys, is an art, it's a skill. You're not gonna be able to. I mean, now, don't get me wrong, dogs are just like us, like one method, one way. Don't work on everyone, right?

Speaker 1:

I'm sure you've been one of those people like yeah, my dad spanked me, my dad beat me up, and I'm sure you know someone like, you know what? My dad never even raised his voice at me. I never got spanked. Like really, you never, ever got spanked ever. Like no, no, those are the rare ones, guys. Those are the rare kinds.

Speaker 1:

Now, I'm not condoning that you gotta beat your dog, never. Anybody can beat a dog, guys. Anybody can bribe a dog. I always say that you can beat or bribe your dog yourself. You don't need to hire me for that, right. So in this episode, guys, I'm gonna go over what are the things you can do to. I mean, not all of you guys can afford me, not all of you guys can hire me, even if you could, right, like some of you are listening from different cities, different countries, but you know these are some good tips to look into and you'll know what you need to do or who you need to hire or what to look for when you know that you cannot do it on your own right. You can't do it on your own. You try it, you can't.

Speaker 1:

So these are the trainers to avoid, or red flags. You know, like, how you look for a good dog trainer and what are their good qualities, right, alright, so the first one, red flag number one is always go with your feeling guys about what someone is. If you get a weird vibe about someone, what are you talking about on the phone from their website, whatever. If they have reviews, that's even better. But Yelp reviews are better guys than Google, because Google look, I've been doing this a long time, it's not my first rodeo Google is much nicer. Like, you can have all friends, relative put you know, a good review for you on Google and yeah, you can have like a lot of them and it looks pretty deceiving Yelp. They're very picky. Yeah, you could have friends, relative, neighbors put a Yelp review, but they will fall off and they pride themselves for you know good reviews, I mean real reviews by real people, something like that.

Speaker 1:

So most of my clients are women and the reason is because, one, I'm very handsome, no, I'm kidding. One, they don't abuse the dog. They don't abuse the dog, they don't want to give up on the dog, and that's so admirable, that's very noble of them. Guys, they think they know it all. Like, ah, I always get a wife like, yeah, my husband always thinks he can do it. My husband did it with his dog, he thinks he can do it. No, there will never be an art dog like this one you have right now. There will never be an art one like you've had before. So they're all different. Like you, I dropped something. Like you, you're different than your, your siblings, right? You're not the same. Like think about it, there'll never be another one like you. Dogs are the same way. Guys, there'll never be an I want like this one. They're never gonna like. Now, even the same breed, even the same breed, were all different.

Speaker 1:

So first thing you look for is see if you get a good vibe about this person. You know you instinct, your Six sense, and what I'm saying by that is like women are usually good at that, like I didn't get a good vibe about them. I don't feel right, I don't know. So go with that, go with that. Of course, back it up a logic, but you know your intuition is Rarely wrong right Now.

Speaker 1:

At the same token, don't go with a dog cleaner. That's very nice, very friendly and it's clueless. You know she has no, no good Common sense as far as dog training goes. The. But this, she's super nice, she's so nice, she's so, oh, my god, I love being around her way. My dog loves her, I love her. We've done like 30 lessons. The dog still doesn't look trained, but she's so nice. So don't go with someone like that either. Like, okay, you want to pay for results? Right, results, not for like unlimited, like I give. Unlimited lessons is more as needed. But you become the trainer, guys, in this journey, I'll be an instructor, right? You and your family members Become the trainers. Yeah, it won't work without you guys. Okay, all right.

Speaker 1:

Red flag number two they rely everything on treats, guys. So the only time I recommend treats, guys, is if your dog is very fearful the dog is really fearful, scared, aggressive or if you want to teach it tricks. I Repeat if your dog's fearful. You want to gain a stress, right, the dog will not act like that with you. The dog already Bonded with you, is trusting you, so you don't need to use treats. What I mean by that? With strangers, complete strangers, especially men, especially men. So if you use treats for commands, guys, the dough will rely on listening to the treats all the time and then when you stop using it, the dog stops listening. So you gotta let the dog know. You gotta work with a trainer that I want to work on.

Speaker 1:

I want to rely on on on my technique, mostly on on technique, psychology, leadership, not hot dog, sausage and paparone, right, love, leadership, technique and psychology. That's what you want to look for. Now, don't get me wrong, guys, I'm not against treats, I'm against bribery. So at the end of training session you meet the dog, said you know ten times, then you give it a treat. But if the dog sees or smell the treats, the dog is just putting on a show and is doing it for the treat, it's not doing it for you. So you want the treat to be like a surprise, like and your dog should listen to you because you said so, because you're the mommy or the teacher, you're the leader, you're the daddy or the buddy, you're the one in charge. You're not just a briber, briber in chief, right? It's just not healthy, natural, guys. It's not practical, leader. It's not practical that you know that you'll have a pouch of hot dogs with you all the time and chances are, you already been using treats. So think about it. You already been using treats with your dog, but not much success.

Speaker 1:

Tricks and treats go together. But remember sit, stay He'll. These are not trick tricks, their commands. So what happens when you use tricks with treats? Your dog thinks it's a sit trick, it's a down trick, it's a stay trick. When it's a command, meaning the dog water, he feels like it or not. He has to obey. He has to listen everywhere every time.

Speaker 1:

What are you have company over? What are you have? There's another dog, whether it's outside or on distractions, your dog has to listen to you. And this comes where the dog has to respect you. When they respect you, they respond to you. Not fear, guys, respect. I'm not gonna say you gotta, you know, hit your dog, slam your dog, not, and I'm gonna emphasize on that. You know, anybody can do that. Really, you don't need to hire me or anyone for that, right. So you want to make sure it passes the common sense test as firm, maybe. And you need to be firm. From doesn't mean harsh, okay, you can be fun, fair and firm. Fun, fair and firm. A lot of you guys are fun and fair. You never firm. A lot of you guys are only firm. You're never fun and fair.

Speaker 1:

Like that dog is trained but he's so scared he's shaking like a leaf. You know you want to be your dog's best friend, not just master. I remember there was a dog trainer. The dog was flawless, you would listen better than people's kids and it's like man. I told him like your dog is really trained, you know, there's no doubt you can see it. And he's like well, yeah, I. And I said but you're not his best friend, I can't tell you know, he's a mess, is master and he left. Like Zedekis, you can be his best friend. You know it's like wow, we both were laughing. So you don't want a trainer like that either. Guys, that's too harsh, right, that's too firm. You don't want a trainer that treats you like a dog either.

Speaker 1:

And this is what I mean by that is like See, if you like the person, like if you don't get a good vibe from the person. Like, I've put up with a lot of crappy Trainers where they had really crappy people skills. They were awful, but I also learned what not to do from them, what not to say. There was one trainer like they were so good. I learned this from them. Like you can put your dog on a stake command and toy walk away. You can drive away in. The dog will not move. Drive away, guys, drive away. That was the last, last class, last test, and I told him like man, I'm very impressed with you guys, I'm gonna refer you some people and I never forgot what he said. He's like I don't give a shit if you do or you don't Do. You see what I'm saying? Guys, really poor people skills this is what I mean it like.

Speaker 1:

So you will meet trainers. You know there will be like that they're really weird people dog trainers. A lot of them will be women. A lot of them will be women. Yeah, so You'll see, yeah, I've been doing this 30 years. Guys, a lot of them will be women. So you'll see, all right, the next one.

Speaker 1:

Guys, you want to work with a trainer. Ask yourself what is it that you need? What is it that really matters to you? There are two kinds of dog trainers out there. One is problem solvers, and they're good with problem solving, bad breaking, bad habits, behavior modification, and that one is obedience training. Obedience training guys, they're very, they're very cheap. They're usually a weekly class. You know. You come there in a class six to eight weeks. It's like probably 150 150 bucks and you're giving your dog treats just for being alive. Most, like you saw, treat based everything is treats. You don't get the one-on-one attention if your dog's really bad. They ignore you. They'll say control your dog, control your dog. I'm like duh, why you think I'm here. I Don't know how to control my dog. So, obedience training guys, a sit, stay down, heal and come right. Even that you need to do a private lesson, I believe, but that's one way to people do it.

Speaker 1:

Problem solving is you want to teach your dog to stop jumping up, play-biting. You want him to stop barking when you tell him to. You don't want him to run out the front door. You want him to house train. You don't want him to start stealing things off counters, guarding things from you. You want to tackle separation anxiety. You want to listen off-leash. You want to listen around. You know, guests, you don't want it to be overprotective with dogs, people, kids it's those are the one that usually people hire me for. They're like, yeah, it will be nice If he didn't pull on the least that it gets, but this is not the main reason I'm here, you know.

Speaker 1:

So you want to ask yourself what is it that you need? Do you need obedience training? Most of you don't. Most of you don't care if the dog even sat. You just want the dog to be a polite dog. You don't want the dog to be Annoying, you know. So, beance, you know that's good. But manners is more important, because the dog could be on the stake command and still bark its head off. The dog could be on its bed, it could be in the crate, it could be in a different room, it could be in the backyard and it will not shut up. It will keep barking and barking and barking. So that's what I mean by that is like I'm going based on what is it that you need? Really, like, really, really.

Speaker 1:

I always might ask my client like, what's the main issue you want to focus on? All right, the next one, guys, see if the trainers really On top of their game with the business sense, right Are they? Are they punctual? Do they show up on time? Like, are they rude on the phone or they rude on to text? Because If you don't get a good vibe and you see that this person's really bad, they're not Punctual, they're very, you know, late, they flake.

Speaker 1:

I Don't know if you want to work with someone like that, but there's people that, before even paying them there, like that, like imagine, this person acts like this. You haven't even paid them yet, they have even got paid yet and they're this rude and this bad. So think about it. Do you want to hire someone like that? Like, okay, this person treats me like this, that I have even paid him yet. It's rarely our way around where you like okay, I'm sure, I'm sure once he gets my money or she gets my money, then they'll change. No, no, if someone's professional, the courteous, they're on top of their game. They care about their image. They care about their image. They get back to you. They don't leave you hanging. You get. You'll be amazed.

Speaker 1:

I get like 20, 30 calls and emails a day and I get some funny ones Like oh, can you teach my dog to be a tag train? Can you teach it hunting? Can you teach it in German? Like well, we live in America, let's teach it English first. You know, and they all act. You know, act like Whatever.

Speaker 1:

They said, that the one, the dog to listen, in German is usually like a tough dog, like a doberman or German shepherd or rod-whaler, or Like a Belgian melon or something like that. And I was joking like well, let's teach it English first. You want the dog to listen to your, to your, you know wife, to your kids. You don't want it to run the show. All right, the next one, guys, let's see, I wrote all these things down.

Speaker 1:

Okay, you want to make sure, guys, that you don't work with a trainer. That they say ignore bad habits, ignore all the bad habits, just distract the dog or ignore it. So this what I mean by that. The dog jumps up on you. They say ignore it, just cross your arm. That's not training, guys like you could do that Without even hiring the trainer. Really, the dog will still knock you down, you're still gonna get dirty, scratched up. Can you tell that to you? Guess? Just ignore my dog, just turn my bet, turn around, turn around, turn your back. That means you're telling the dog to hump their ass. That's it. That's what you're teaching the dog. That's not training guys.

Speaker 1:

So you want the training guys to be diverse. You want the dog trainer like, okay, if this doesn't work, what else you got? Okay, if this doesn't work, if jumping on me and my guests turning my back doesn't work, you know what else you got, you know. So if they say we'll keep doing it, keep doing it, ah, if it doesn't work, guys, you get a little no, like right away, right off the bat, like that doesn't work. You can always have plan B, plan, you know, plan Z, even ABC, even Z, right. So a lot of trainers say, let the dog bark, bark, bark. Whenever they stop barking, then you, you give it attention, you give it love, you give it a treat. What the dog could look at it like. I parked my head off and when I was done, they gave me some. They give me some Treats, right. So again, you got to make sure that the training is diverse, guys. So so I'll give you an example. Check this out, guys. So this is why I cannot, I can only do so much through to podcast. So say, someone says use a pinch car, use a pinch car. I heard Zedekis recommended a pinch car. Get a pinch car for your dog.

Speaker 1:

These are the possible scenarios. Every dog is different. Every owner is different. This is what could happen. Okay, what is the dog? The second he pulls on the leash he could be a gyalp, you know, and yelp and just okay, and that's it, I will get used to it. And our dog will scream, will scream, and you're screaming you, you panic, you let the leash go, you pick the dog up and Our scenarios the dog, like you know, pulls and bites the leash.

Speaker 1:

Or that. Our scenarios the dog screams or bites the leash or goes For your hand, goes for your foot, and our scenarios the dog pulls and kind of shake his head like mm-hmm, what is that? Like okay, and this is not the same thing. But okay, I'm not gonna stop, I'm not gonna pull no more. And our scenarios the dog pulls and kind of pauses and pulls and pauses, then doesn't pull no more, like ah, okay, this is different, okay, I'm not gonna pull no more.

Speaker 1:

And Another scenario is like you picked it, think the thing out, and your wife sees that like there's no way you're gonna put that around my dog, there's no way. That looks at barbaric. It looks abusive. That will puncture the dog's neck, you know. When it doesn't puncture, it only pinches, you know. Oh my god, there's no way. That's barbaric. I love the dog. I will never do that, you know.

Speaker 1:

So those are all the possible scenarios, guys, just from one tool, one tool, when this is what I mean by does they get a V next to someone? You next to someone that you know Does it for living, a professional, and I emphasize on that. So check this out. Go with someone, guys that is a pro, that dog training is their profession. Okay, they're professional. Dog training is their profession, meaning they're not a hobbyist. They're not like okay, I work, I'm a tax guy.

Speaker 1:

You know, every Wednesday night at, dog training is my passion. I train dogs. You know I'm a hobbyist. I do this on the side, for fun. Now, you know you may say what's wrong with that. You will see in the result and outcome, these guys don't know what they're doing. You know they're like mediocre. You want to work with a pro, guys, you want to work with a pro like I don't train dogs on the side or as a hobby. This is what I do all day, every day. I do house calls. I do. You know Lessons and around dogs, around distractions. I go to the kennel like brap dogs and I work like five, six dogs at a time. It's a lot of work, guys, but I love it. I love it and this is what I'm talking about. I'm a pro, I'm a professional. Yeah, I teach kickboxing for fun. You know, I'm also a double black belt in Tech 1.0 and kickboxing that's my hobby. You know, I don't own a kickboxing school.

Speaker 1:

I'm very good at marketing. That could be my hobby, right. I'm good at advertising. I'm good at search engine optimization. I don't work for company. I do need to do those things. I could actually I'm that good to work on the side do part-time thing, but no.

Speaker 1:

So you get a higher pro and usually they charge a lot, but they deliver results. Guys, anyone that charges okay, anyone that charges 500 or less, they doubt their method, they doubt their, their philosophy, they doubt that they can deliver results. I'm telling you it's just you get what you pay for. Great trainers are in. You know, cheap and cheap trainers aren't great. Again, great trainers aren't cheap and cheap trainers aren't great. Like anything else, guys, you get what you pay for. What do you pay for? Tob, attorney, doctor, expert, hotel car you get what you pay for, right. It's like anything else, all right.

Speaker 1:

The next red flag guys you're gonna make sure that the trainers not too aggressive, it's not abusive, they're not slamming your dog, they're not hanging a dog. So dog trainers that have the word canine in them usually do stuff like this the letter canine, okay, letter K, then the number nine. These are the guys that always usually have a protection training background. They do schutzen, they're good trainers but they're kind of too harsh so they will get the result done. But like say, if a dog like wants to bite me, you know I may do that. Like I will hold him, you know, till he calms down. Sometimes the dog passes out. I haven't done that, man, and maybe 23 years I haven't done that. Yeah, because I told my clients okay, if your dog's that bad, he needs a shock collar, you know. And if they agree with me, good, if they don't, I wish him nothing but the best. You can try hugs and hot dogs. Then Usually hugs and hot dogs is what they saw with, and then they graduate with shock collar and pinch collar.

Speaker 1:

Again, you gotta be diverse guys. Does nice work with everyone? Think about it? Does nice work with everyone every time? No. And does harsh and firm work with everyone? No, it doesn't. How many times you've been in a situation like you know what? I don't like your tone. I didn't. If you would have said it nicely, I would have done it, and you were.

Speaker 1:

I'm sure in those scenarios that you notice, you were nice, kind and nobody listened, nobody cared, and then you had to show you crazy psychosider. We all have a psychosider, all right. It's funny because I say you gotta be fun, fair, firm and flexible. Right, fun, fair, firm and flexible. Flexible means be the verse right. And then I was. The fifth F comes into play. That means like everything gets fucked up. The dog can tell you fuck off, fuck you. No fucking refund cuz you're not doing the fucking things I told you to. But you don't want to be fun and fair always first, guys, I I learned this from dog training. I do this in life. I'm always fun and fair person, always, but I'm firm when I need to be, you know, and I'm flexible.

Speaker 1:

One way, one method, you know, one mindset doesn't work in every scenario with everyone. So why? Why rely on one way, right, okay, next one, guys, let's see. So like hitting the dog, punching the dog, slamming the dog, holding the dog on their back, pinning him down these are all abuse, guys. It's. It may work and make it the dog's attention. I only do that if I have to defend myself the dog, like trying to maul me or break a really bad dog fight, like the dog's trying to kill that dog and and no one can stop it. I may have to do that and I make it bit. I've gotten bit like that dog are very fast dogs can catch a fly from it air.

Speaker 1:

So you want to make sure, guys, you don't go with someone that's very harsh and and then you end up with a robot like those trainers usually do really good job, but the dogs too robotic, like like it behaves like a soldier. I make well-behaved pets, I don't make robots. I don't make, you know, soldiers. So it's it's. It's bootcamp, yeah, but I'm not gonna act like a bootcamp officer, all right.

Speaker 1:

Next one guys, see if the person is open with different tools. Remember harnesses don't always stop dogs from pulling on leash. You guys see what else they recommend. You know they open like, okay, at that brand of the shock or didn't work, what, what else you got. If that crate does not work in, what our kind of crate we can use. If you know that leash is not really good, what our kind of leash we can use, you know. So every tool has its purpose, remember.

Speaker 1:

Don't panic just because you hear remote car shock or a lot of you know people that use that as the user for extreme scenarios, like if the dog wants to, like, guard things from them. The dogs chasing cars wants to kill their cat, the dogs fence fighting with a neighbor's dog. The dog is, you know, stealing things off cameras, food or whatever. Your dog is not reliable, off leash just takes off, you know, and you know the dog wants to hump every dog. Those are the scenarios I've noticed. Dog owners rely to rely on our remote color, right?

Speaker 1:

The next one, guys, is you want to make sure guys, a lot, of, a lot of dog trainers, what they do is they say okay, once you know I train your dog, there's an expiration date, like, okay, six or eight weeks is usually what they. They offer like group classes minus lifetime. So Lifetime of your dog, right, don't be slick. For as long as you own your dog, you can use me, you can call me. So ask how's the follow-up? How much? They charge more if you need a follow-up. How does that work?

Speaker 1:

Get everything in writing, guys. Don't go by just a handshake, you know? Smile. I give everyone something you know in writing. Well, it's in my contract. They get that. They get a copy of it. So no monkey business, you know. All right, I'm gonna go over real quick guys again.

Speaker 1:

So make sure you get a good vibe about them. Make sure they're very punctual and they're professional. Read their reviews, help reviews, look them up. If they say, oh, I'm just brand new, you know, like, okay, I would ask for like three or four references. And if they have a group class, go watch a class you know. And then ask you know, set aside a few people and ask, like, how you like them. You know most of them. They'll say, oh, that's not bad. Then ask if there's anything you can improve with this class, this trainer, what would it be If there's anything you can improve? And listen what they'll say. I promise there'll be some kind of feedback, critique you'll get.

Speaker 1:

Make sure, guys, that don't make a soldier of the dog, right. The dog, you know, needs to be trained. He doesn't need his ass kicked, right. Make sure they don't rely on treats for everything. They really use treats smartly. You use treats smartly if you have been using treats for everything.

Speaker 1:

If you are doing a group class, make sure you're not ignored in the class. Ask yourself do you really need the class? Group class, because a lot of things what I tell my clients is you teach the dog without distractions, then add the distractions. So in a group class, guys, you're learning, all sudden you're correcting your dog and you have all these distractions. People, different dogs, dogs are barking at each other. They whine, they whimper, they pull the fight towards one another, they pull the play towards one another. It's chaos. You're trying to listen to the trainer. It's a lot of work, guys, a lot of work. It's just not a fair environment to you know. And plus, that's not a real life scenario. You're not in a circle motion. You're not going in a circle motion with 20 more dogs. You know getting your dog to listen. You walk on a straight line in your neighborhood, in front of your house. That's not real life. You don't have 20 dogs around you. So, again, real life scenarios, what you want to look for right and think about. Let's see Next one I wrote make sure they're diverse with the training tools.

Speaker 1:

You know they have an open mind like, okay, this tool, I have tried it, it's not working. What else? What else you got? It's not working. I've been using this, it's not getting the dog attention. What else do you recommend?

Speaker 1:

An old dog trainer with open mind will say, like, okay, this one, okay, we could try this one, we could try this one. If they say I don't know, you know, I don't know, then you have a crappy trainer. I mean I don't know what to say. Make sure you don't get a trainer that say ignore the bad habits, ignore the bad habits. Like the dog, like, okay, just let it jump, let it bark, you know a little, you know, just that's it. Whenever the dog's barking, pick it up. That's not training, guys. You can't pick up a big, strong dog, you can't, you know. That's not, again, training, it's just babying the dog. All right, guys, that's it.
